This is my personal favourite funniest scene in the show as Riko is wimped by a little cute doggy 🐶 and I like the look she had when the dog was nose to nose at her which is best animated expression in the franchise.

The "fangs" line definetly helps support the theory that a dog bit Riko as a child and that's why she's afraid of them.
My theory is a lot simpler. She's a city girl from Tokyo, and she (presumably) lived in an apartment. Where dogs are very uncommon, as they're not allowed. She probably just grew up with zero interaction with dogs, so, as they say, she fears the unknown.
I think both theories work.

They seem to be confused about s Shiitake’s gender. The anime sometimes calls it a he or a she, but SIF will always call it a she. We need answers.
The very last episode kinda gives away exactly what Shiitake's gender is.

Not even season 2, particularly that YohaRiko episode, explained why Riko was so scared of dogs. Bummer. -_-
Because it doesn't really need an explanation. It makes a lot of cultural sense.
Riko is from the heart of Tokyo, a city that we know is very crowded and dense. A great deal of the population lives in appartments, were they rarely get to have dogs. I mean, even Yoshiko says it at one point. She's not allowed to have dogs on her appartment. For this reason, Riko grew up a dogless childhood, so it makes sense for her to fear what she doesn't know.
This is also why Honoka was so surprised to see that Maki has a ceiling fan in her mountain cabin, back in season 2 of SIP. Ceiling fans are rare in small japanese appartments.
Altough, fun fact; in early stages of development, pre-anime, Ruby was advertised to be the one who's afraid of dogs. But Riko needed more traits of her own and Ruby had too many. They even made art of that. Here: data.whicdn.com/images/237818231/large.jpg
Haha, yeah, I was referring to that pic of Ruby. I actually watched the anime before I saw that pic; so I was like WTF when I first saw that pic.....
And Ruby's traits, I remember one of them is needlework, which was never shown in the anime. However in the SIF Aqours story, it seems to show especially when she works alongside You.
