  • Jun.15 -- Harvard University’s own researchers found statistical evidence that its undergraduate application process discriminated against Asian-American applicants, yet its admissions officials ignored the results and took no action, a group suing for bias claimed. Bloomberg's Patricia Hurtado has more on "What'd You Miss?"

    3:33 Nope. Affirmative Action DOESN'T help you if you're Asian.
    Here's a direct quote from the study based on the admissions data that Harvard was forced to release:
    "For an Asian-American applicant who is not disadvantaged and has a 25% probability of admission, if the applicant was treated like applicants of another racial group, his or her probability of admission would change dramatically. If treated as a white applicant, the probability of admission would increase to 30% if the applicant were female and 36% percent if the applicant were male. These jumps in probability are large and statistically significant, as they equate to a 20% and 44% increase in the probability of admission, respectively.
    If the applicant were treated like an African-American or Hispanic applicant in the baseline dataset, the jumps would be even greater. If treated like a Hispanic applicant, the probability of admission would increase to 74% (if the applicant were female) and 77% (if the applicant male). And if treated like an African-American applicant, the probability of admission would increase to 94% (if female) and 95% (if male)."

      Also of interest is Table B.5.5 (pg 118) which shows alumni interviewers (who sit down in face to face interviews to assess personal character) giving Asian American applicants the second highest personal ratings, yet the Admissions office (who never even meet the applicants) giving Asian American applicants the lowest personal ratings.
      High ratings from teachers and guidance counselors are also seemingly ignored by the admissions office ONLY when it comes to Asian American applicants. From the study (pg 41): "Asian-American applicants are substantially stronger in other dimensions as well. Compared to white applicants, Asian-American applicants have better extracurricular ratings and overall alumni ratings, similar teacher 1 ratings, but slightly lower ratings than whites on counselor, teacher 2, and alumni personal ratings. Asian-American applicants are stronger than African-American and Hispanic applicantson all these dimensions except two: the athletic and personal ratings). As shown in Section 2.4., the athletic rating is relatively unimportant."

      Mike Gilardino You should actually take a look at the information released by Harvard. They note that Asian applicants supersede other applicants in extracirriculars as well, and that Asians need to outscore white applicants by some 100 points to be seen as equal. So a more accurate way of looking at it is an Asian kid with a 1600 SAT who's CEO/founder of an LLC and he has been giving lectures on Astrophysics in 8 different countries, in 5 diffrent languages losing his spot to a Jewish kid with no extracirriculars and a 1500. (Yes, I go to an Ivy as well, and white students generally have less on their resumes)

      Alice Rodríguez. The first people to really inhabit the Americas were people who migrated from Russia across a land bridge, or so the theory goes, and you are correct in saying no one really owned the land as the natives didn’t see land as a thing you could own. They learned to correct this thinking once the Europeans came around however, cause those bastards just have to fuck everything up.

    It's obvious Harvard discriminate (requiring higher standardized testing and ranking the "personality" lower by admission officers who never met the applicants vs the high rating of the alumni who actually interviewed them). The issue is: should it be OK to discriminate one group for the benefit of another? If so, under what across-the-board criteria? Knowing that Asians were discriminate against due to the foreign looks, culture, and language when they first came to the U.S (and even now sadly), how did they become as successful as they are now and should they be further punished for it?

    I’m a minority that goes to an Ivy League and I absolutely detest affirmative action. The only word that describes it is racist, and that’s that.
    That being said, it still makes me sad when any time someone sees a minority at a prestigious school, they automatically disqualify the student for anything they’ve done. Yes, their admission was more probable, but you don’t know if they were valedictorian or won the Intel Research award. Argue on facts, not emotion (I’d recommend Jordan Peterson or Ben Shapiro as some of the best examples for that)

    It reflects so poorly on Americans that this has become a conversation about Asians vs Affirmative action for African Americans and Hispanics while 15-20% of the acceptances at Harvard are going to Legacy students and children of ultra rich donors. Is that fair? What exactly did Legacy students do to deserve their spot? Why isn’t anyone talking about that too?

    • @dasikakn
      @dasikakn 4 роки тому

      Angel S The study done on Harvard also revealed that 70% of all legacy applicants are white and that three quarters of them would not have been accepted through regular stringent filters. It also found that the chances of being accepted increased 5x if the student applicant had that special designation. I think that’s enough to conclude that Legacy is an affirmative action for the rich and white. These Unis are also getting grants from the government (our taxes), tuition from our kids, and yet seek donations and sizable endowment from ultra rich Americans and foreigners too in exchange for admission. @Carissa Wu Not entirely the full picture. Private institutions ALSO receive federal tax grants. In fact just rewind a few months ago to Harvard turning down the pandemic bailout check they got from Trump administration. Most of the endowments these universities are currently managing are already so big that they can be self sufficient for beyond the next 100 years. There is really no reason to feel “obliged” to admit legacy students to support the facilities. Let’s be honest in that these crazy sized endowments are really just about trading powers away from middle class and money away from taxes, not about education or creating a meritocracy. It’s definitely perverse when private school tuitions will soon become more affordable than excellent state universities that educate more of the population than any of these private schools - blogs.berkeley.edu/2014/10/13/why-elite-private-universities-get-more-per-pupil-government-money/

    I came to a poor Asian family who constantly eat ramen 24-7-365. Tofu was a bonus and a few sprinkle of free packet of soy sauce in my steam rice is my usual desert. I love fortune cookies. When I applied for college, I based my college acceptance by relying on hope, luck and feng shui.
    Make my college story acceptance short, I was not accepted at all in any school I applied. I never lost hope until I opened another fortune cookies that says.... "do what you got to do to better yourself or you eat shit"
    I settled for community college. They tortured me there too. My white, BLACK
    Latino classmates constantly bombarded me that I was the only Asian
    Attending cheap school and questioned why da hell I was there. I hated that constant Asian stereotype that totally untrue.
    I left the community college. So, what now?
    1995 I saw Trump in one of the tv shows. He said, if you want to fulfill your dream just do it. He also said, America needs plumbers, welders, painter, machinist and the whole 9 yards of blue collar jobs. You can't always be like me. There are other ways.
    I went to trade school and learned CNC CAD DESIGN (computer numerical control - computer aided design) The numbers can be considered to be the coordinates of a graph and they control the movement of the cutter.
    I love my career, I remember ELON MUSK said, I don't give a shit with your diploma. That ring the bell.
    I ended up the best CAD designer, people thinks I was a GENIE AND A GENIUS ASIAN. All of my friends from high school who attended higher education can't even compute nor can differentiate between AC & DC. Remember i said im unique asian? My trait is common sense.
    Im now an owner of a company that sell 6 axis CNC machine. Each cnc machine cost between $150, to $220,000. My customers are big industrial companies that specializes in manufacturing. I hate to tell you how much I make because it's irrelevant and meaning less to me. Today, As I sit in a quite room, I always wondered, smile and uttered " I got the last laugh" 😁😁😁 fortune cookies so powerful than the color of a skin. You overcome and avoided the elites and political hacks. It does not discriminate even you eat shit. I still eat shit though, I never forget where I came from ... yes of course from the RAMEN!

    Discrimination based on skin color IS RACIST, plain and simple, no matter what your intentions are. It is sad that we tolerate it today in our society and are becoming progressively more discriminatory... this is not what MLK and the other Civil Rights heroes envisioned, and we are disrespecting their legacy right now.

    This problem is unsolvable. Affirmative action is necessary to address disparities, yet it creates new disparities. It doesn't matter. The good life we are all competing for is a sham. I sit by the creek, eat Doritos, and count myself a king of infinite space.

      "Affirmative action is necessary to address disparities". Disparities of what? What they're doing to Asian students is truly wrong. They're smart enough to get in, but you'd rather let in more Black/Latino students because of "disparities?" We're all Homo Sapiens. We can interbreed and all of us are "intelligent" beings by virtue of consciousness. A society that truly doesn't see race is a society with many "disparities" along racial lines. Because IQ is 90% genetic for people above a college level education and all cultures are not equal.

    当地时间11月28日,欧洲央行行长拉加德表示,即使经济走弱,欧洲央行也将进一步加息。此前公布的欧元区10月通胀数据显示,受能源价格暴涨影响,欧元区10月总体通货膨胀率达到10.6%,创历史新高;核心通货膨胀率也达5%,凸显了欧洲央行面临的升息压力。
    拉加德表示,目前的经济环境中存在太多不确定性,特别是批发层面的高能源成本转嫁到零售层面的过程,让人无法冒进地认为通胀已经见顶。拉加德还指出,欧元区通胀前景面临的风险是偏上行的。
    在10月底的会议上,欧洲央行加息75个基点,利率升至十多年来最高水平。今年7月至10月期间,欧洲央行累计加息200个基点,创下有史以来最激进的加息周期。
    欧洲央行行长拉加德:通胀还未见顶 加息仍将继续。

      bs. just even easier for top schools to discriminate against asians so there's no proof to show that asians are more qualified. next, they can take away gpa as well and just admit based on "personality" hahaha.

    • @openlc555
      @openlc555 6 років тому

      The schools will not drop gpa as an requirement. SAT is just a standardized test. People can study, cram and memorize the old tests. The SAT scores reflect mainly on how well you take the test, not much more than that. Asian students can broaden their academic pursuit rather than focusing on being good test takers.

    • @ThePatriot1123
      @ThePatriot1123 6 років тому +1

      IslandBreeze you can’t just memorize it; its format is the same but you can’t just look at old tests and blindly memorize. Otherwise why wouldn’t everyone get a 2400?

    • @openlc555
      @openlc555 6 років тому

      Not every question in SAT is from the old tests. And not everyone can memorize every question. But the excessive preparation for the test definitely results in a better score. But the problem of a high SAT score as a result of excessive preparation only shows the willingness and effort in studying and preparing for a test. It discloses little about the applicant in other areas such as his or her personality, life experience, etc.
      In today's world where AI and big data can solve many problems for humans, the ability of endless drilling and preparation for a test is not a valuable asset and definitely should not be a deciding factor in higher education admission.

There is always the next bus that you can catch if it has some seats empty on it. Its not like you are always disallowed a seat or that this is the only bus in the world. Right.

    I cannot condone the the admission process as being fair at the Harvard university, I must say that it must cater to Christian values in their students and and less to Paganism. But My nephew, an Asian American Christian , recently went to Harvard, for masters in public health, being a topper from his state . The result is that he adopted paganism and I am not happy.. .
