    The level of volume she produced was astonishing. The middle is gigantic here.

    I still cannot believe our Joan is gone! What a talent and what a great lady. She had such a connection with the audience. I saw her in Chicago as Anna Bolena and the electricity in the air was palpable. Dame Joan was like a friend to everyone - how I love her!

      She's not gone. Go to an opera house and close your eyes. You will hear her.

    Such a rich wagnerian soprano sound. I remember seeing her in this role in Vancouver, and the sheer power of her voice would engulf absolutely everyone and everything, like a resounding bubble, it seemed to be coming from every direction enveloping the room and other musicians, endless cascades of this gorgeous sound just pouring and pouring.

    I was fortunate to hear some of the greats, but two performances will always stand out - Sutherland as Anna Bolena and Leontyne Price in concert at Orchestra Hall. The audience in both instances almost broke into riots - the great singing and the love for these two women was phenomenal. I actually witnessed people standing on their seats screaming and crying! Price gave five encores and Sutherland took a 30 minute standing ovation!

    The high B natural @8:11 is absolutely huge...an acoustic tidal wave. The entire performance is magnificent. Brava!

    This is spectacular. Utterly spectacular. And puts to bed any thoughts that joan was a one trick pony. In this we hear not a lick of coloratura, no crazy high notes, just a searingly expressive and legato vocal line, coupled with a solid marble instrument.

    A colleague of mine who was a long-time member of the Vancouver Opera Chorus took a charming photo of Sutherland in her dressing room, in her Sita costume, wearing glasses and doing her needlepoint.

    What a performance! Technique and breath control enviable..how many living sopranos can come close today?

    I saw many of her performances in New York, not just the Met, but Brooklyn and Buffalo too. She sang unusual roles (Carmelites, Angelica, Idomeneo) that we never had the opportunity to see here. So this is a real treat.

    Joan at her most resplendent! Her voice was so full and rich in the late 70s. It was a good time to add this spinto role to her gallery of roulading mad women.

      I think this would classify as a dramatic soprano role, if you go by the lush and thick orchestration.

    • @eric644
      @eric644 4 роки тому +1

      Pete yes this piece is absolutely going toward the dramatic end, although a lot of the role is quite lyric, like Lakmé. The duet with the mezzo is super floaty and light. Esclarmonde I would call dramatic coloratura.

    • @petenoles5979
      @petenoles5979 4 роки тому +3

      @@eric644 yes I absolutely agree with you on that one, it goes from extreme lyrical to extreme dramatic singing within a minute, I was just talking about about the lush orchestration. 'Esclarmonde' is something that I would call wagnerian coloratura role, the orchestration absolutely massive, heavier than any Italian/French opera, including Turandot. Kinda scary to imagine someone else singing it. I've seen her four times in 'Esclarmonde' back in the day.

    • @eric644
      @eric644 4 роки тому +1

      Pete can you imagine anyone but Joan handling the demands of Esclarmonde as well as she did? She herself named it as the role she was most proud to sing, as it was the trickiest in the sense of constantly going in and out of all the registers in an abrupt manner.

    • @petenoles5979
      @petenoles5979 4 роки тому +1

      @@eric644 probably Callas and nobody else. The requirements to sing 'Esclarmonde' well are mind-boggling.

      Unfortunately, you’ll probably never see performances or productions like this again! Listen to Dame Joan’s interview with John Tolansky where she addresses this issue. Producers think they have to be innovative - set period pieces in modern times, etc. It’s ridiculous and turns the public off. What’s more, most conductors don’t know how to conduct for the voice. I love opera, but believe it’s dying. Who do we have today that can sing like this?

      It's an incomparable opera.
      But you have to have the feeling & the knowledge for the french school to appreciate that.
      Ricky was a great musician ,who adored rhe research ,& he knew that she was born for that.
      The live is much better than the studio.
      They had to record ..Robert le Diable.She's the best in the first Isabella's aria

    Delicious. Thanks so much for posting this gem. This live version is far more dramatic and intense than the recording made around the same time. This aria was written by Massenet for a later Italian performance of the opera (Turin I think) and fills out the role splendidly. Gorgeous costume too!
