  • Joan Sutherland sings Sitâ's aria "De moi je veux bannir" in Massenet's Le Roi de Lahore (live performance in Vancouver, September 1977). Truly powerful, expressive and rock solid singing in one of La Stupenda's least performed roles.

Purchased her recording of Le Roi as soon as it came out......Listening to this after so many years of loving her voice it just reminds me of why I think its the most beautiful voice ever.

She was perfect in this role, and no singer even came close to her.
    Beautiful La Stupenda!

I believe she approached this role on the heels of her successful performances of Massenet's opera Esclarmonde. Richard seemed to be very interested in exploring some of Massenet's forgotten works, and bringing them into the standard repertory. Joan was already into her forties when Esclarmonde was presented.

She had exactly the right voice for the french school ,and he knew it.He wasn't always a very inspired conductor ,but without any doubt ,he had the intuition of a great musician.
Her 2record album(Decca), with the french arias is a must ,if you're interested in french school ,& you'd like to have some kind of initiation.
She was always so busy with so many Lucias,Elviras,Gildas ,and others chances for more varied repertory didn't occur ,but certainly it should be very nice to have, f.e., a Juive , with her as Eudoxie and Bumbry as Rachel .....a complete rec. of...L'etoile du Nord....or a Dinorah .....

I saw this production here in Vancouver.- and was fortunate to be be in the audience opening nights of her very first Norma, Lucrezia Borgia, and Merry Widow - all here in Vancouver. She liked to try out new roles in smaller opera companies before she took them to the Met or Covent Garden.

Lucky you....I saw most of her performances in San Francisco and felt blessed to be able to.

It was an unusual role for her - no coloratura at all and just one high D which she added.

This opera was basically forgotten until Bonynge and she re-staged it in the 70's, so I think that is the main reason. Besides, she was busy showing her Lucias and Elviras around the world and also "rescuing" from partial oblivion operas - at least in the main opera theaters - like Beatrice di Tenda, Alcina, Rodelinda, Semiramide or Haydn's Orfeo ed Euridice.

Bonynge always thought Massenet was underestimated and encouraged Sutherland to tackle the more dramatic roles of Esclarmonde and Sita.
Sutherland herself claimed Esclarmonde gave her shivers when she sang certain passages, stating in interviews the opera to be gorgeous and erotic sounding. Can’t say I disagree with this. I love them both equally. She is ravishing in both. Give me her Sita or Esclarmonde over her Lucia or Norma any day.

Thank you for that wonderful information. I only wish she had discovered it just a tad sooner but beggars can't be choosers! Lol

Apart from her poor enunciation (which has improved throughout the years), this is surely the most glorious and dramatic singing ever in this role.

I had never heard this but it really is well done. I wonder the reason she didnt perform this in the 60's. ( I don't think she did correct me if I'm wrong, I would love to hear a younger version )

I think at this stage in her career was when her voice was the most beautiful. So full of warmth and burnished amber. But then again I am a die hard fan of her's, so I still found beauty in her voice even the last time she sang Home Sweet Home on stage at her last performance.

Larry Woods I agree with you and like the way you call it "burnished amber"
