Right! Just as they have always done, which means this is nothing new in the sense that they give us a new sound with every comeback. So why is everyone so surprised?
Shinee have not done a conceptual shift this big since Sherlock. This song is the title track to their Dont call me album, so I am interested where they take the album conceptually. Shinee is a long way 12 years into their career, but they have deep pockets performance and vocal wise to easily pull this type of song off.
Truuuueee. They probably think that shinee sticks to a specific genre and stays safe with generic mainstream formulas but thats not shinee. Shinee's unique in a way that you know that their music will always stand out from different groups. It doesnt surprise me that its different from their other album
nobody expected shinee to promote “hello” after the iconic “lucifer” just like how they released “dream girl” followed by “everybody” “i didn’t expect shinee to...” yeah it’s the contemporary band for me and everyone else in the industry
1) the most interesting part is actually was the fact that the song was meant for BoA but she said it fit a group more & Minho wanted the song so they took it 2) the song was produced by Lee Soo Man & composed by dem jointz and Kenzie & written entirely by Kenzie & arranged by Yoo Young-jin . SHINee mentioned they wrote 4 different lyrics for the song but lsm rejected all of them because he felt the lyrics Kenzie wrote fit the song the most 3) they never had hip-hop based title track & they wanted to try it. They had songs like that as b-sides ( & on their Japanese releases) actually but yeah never as the title track 4) it is true the song fit Key the most he really owns this entire song for me. they all good but he really shines the most in it 5) About the mv, they filmed at another location too for the opening parts, but due to time & other stuff, they edited a lot of it & made the mv more focused on the performance. the last part from the bridge till the end of the mv was meant to look like that though lastly, the album is great hope you give it a listen
actually your comment helped me understand some reactors/commenters with your 3rd ppl. i kept being so confused when ppl said that shinee never had a song like this/an aggressive song, and i just couldn't understand but i guess most ppl only know the title tracks! thanks for giving so much info to new fans/potential shawols
@@NaraKwonPoD no problem & yeah many who aren't into SHINee only know a few of their title tracks and never listened to their full album or even know about their Japanese releases so it could be a very new side of SHINee to them
I just need SHINee voices to make it a “SHINee sound”. Actually they commented that they choose this as tittle track cuz it was different to what they did before, and they wanted something powerful. They changed it a lot from the original demo until they were satisfied.
yep I said the exact same thing. SHINee music mostly sounded SHINee-ish because of their voices. And this concept is something they've never tried before, which adds on to the diversity of SHINee's music once again :)
I think the important thing with shinee is that they are always willing to try new genres...like if you consider how different 'view' or 'dream girl' was from 'ring ding dong' or 'lucifer', they've had a really varied sound over the years! I know in interviews they've said a few times how they wanted this comeback to be powerful and to really let everyone know that shinee's back, and having listened to the whole album I think 'don't call me' was the right choice for a title track! Also they've been a group for over 13 years now so why not try something different :) I'm glad you enjoyed it btw and you should definitely listen to the album because their songs 'heart attack' and 'code' have the classic shinee sound you were talking about!
not to be dramatic but kibum is so hot in this... the album is incredible! they really delivered such a coherent album where every track has that SHINee sound. Worth the wait!
I think SHINee has definitely done more than just pop, although last comeback was centered on more electronic pop, but I think what they do is make legendary tracks of the "current trend"? Like "Everybody" which is a 2013 track, where dubstep/electronic music was much more common, so I find them to be masters of any concept or perhaps no concept at all, just good music. Maybe for other groups, it seems odd to go to a different route but I don't think it does for SHINee since they've done so so so much, from rnb (Replay), to electronic pop (View- Good evening etc), funk music (Married To The Music) and even a little of pop-punk in Why So Serious. For me every song of SHINee makes you want to dance and in love with it because it is overflowing with the most unique vocals. Although Don't Call Me is more hip hop, the chorus is much more than just that and I found it very interesting and just very SHINee (powerful chorus).
I was just thinking about Everybody, but in that case I feel like they introduced the genre into kpop because it wasn't really a common thing before. In this case I feel that because of their hiatus, instead of introducing something they grabbed the 4th gen sound and put their own twist on it and I loved it hahaha
Said wonderfully. I think you can rly tell SHINee has a lot of newer fans (which is great!) For those of us who have been around for 8+ years (or who've just gone back to rly known their discography) we know SHINee is constantly changing their genre for their title tracks.
Hm... no, this title track is definitely not like their others but a lot has happened in the kpop industry since 2018. I think they needed a fresh start after the hiatus, because they wouldn't have gotten as much recognition if they did what they always have done. For me, this is their best title track so far. Such a banger and have been stuck in my head all week.
But that's what PD said? PD said this is what they needed for their comeback to get recognition on this new generation and doing it like in 2018 wouldn't be something smart, that it was epic and that is literally a good song and the boys pulled it off amazingly, PD also said that changing the sound and doing something new was a smart decision and it is what stands out.
@@voicesinblue6848 Haha yes, I wrote the comment while watching the video but he said it afterwards. He also said to leave our opinions in the comments and I guess I agree;)
Also, I think the material and "sound" that they will/can create is different because of Jonghyun. The vocal harmonies possible with him and that je ne sais quoi he adds is probably why some people might think the song has a "different" SHINee sound. If I'm not mistaken, they had to rerecord their vocals for story of light. So technically this album will be the first album made with the remaining members' talents specifically in mind. Hence, the approach (producing, concept) will be different.
It's a durag, not a hat. It is something that Black ppl wear to protect their hair and train the texture of short hair (called waves). Many Black ppl feel very strongly abt kpop idols wearing durags (Kai wore that sparkly one in Mhmm). This is a good example of the problem with kpop and appropriation of Black culture as fashion.
@@don3482 I think Minho mentioned this in an interview, while Key also alluded to this in another, recent interview (not mentioning Boa outright, but saying that this was mainly kept for female artists, if I remember correctly.)
@@don3482 u can check boa's variety show titled nobody talks to boa - ep 3. You can find it on youtube. Lee Sooman talked abt boa new potential title track for her new album, and minho visited SM while he was still a marine at that time. Thats where they talked about dont call me :D
Yeah i think we all agree that this is definitely Key's era. He really stood out this time with his beautiful vocals, sexy visuals and that dope ass feather hat.
If I'm not mistaken, the producer for Don't Call Me, Dem Jointz, also produced EXO's Obsession and NCT 127's Kick It. If you listen closely to all these songs intros, they have the same producer tag
The more I listen to this track the more SHINee it sounds. It’s a strange thing because I was shocked the first time too, and I thought I wouldn’t love it, but it caught me and wouldn’t let me go and now I hear familiar SHINee elements that I missed on first listen.
for real, took me a couple of casual listening and some reaction videos to really grasp the melody and rhythm. say less, i ended up bopping this for HOURS like stucked on the top of my playlist🤣
I think that they really needed to do something that wasn’t generally like what they usually do because after being on hiatus for so long, something different would definitely get more attention. The rest of the album is very Shinee though and it’s so so so good, absolutely one of their best
I think they are trying to bring in newer fans that are unfamiliar with SHINee. If you listen to Heart Attack (b-side) it sounds more like a “SHINee-esque” title track. Don’t Call Me is superrrrr catchy, it’s been stuck in my head since I heard it lol and I love Minho’s red hair 🔥
Thank you for reacting, I was waiting for your reaction! Essentially SHINee said their message with this title track was to say don't box them in a genre. Most of the other songs on their album have that "SHINee sound".
I feel like the most unexpected thing about this comeback is that they went for a genre that isn't that obscure? Don't know if that makes sense. Aside from the fact that they have never really gone for the aggressive/hysterical style even in their "strong/powerful" tracks, it's something new and fresh coming from an almost 14 yo group. I actually love this track, because it shows just how versatile they are, and sure, other groups could have done this song, but it wouldn't sound like this, and that is kind of SHINee's strongest point in my opinion, and what made me a fan. I do agree with this being a good choice for their comeback after such a long hiatus, they meant for it to be impact full and in your face with it, which is a mood. And the whole album is so good, I highly recommend giving it a listen, specially CODE, most of the songs in it could have been title track, easily.
i love your comment. It's exactly what I wanted to say in this reaction. For me, whatever they do they will still nail it because they are like no other. When I listen to newer groups, they sound the same to me. Like if they will be given the same song, It will still sound the same for me. You know what I mean.
I think this is SHINee’s strongest and smartest comeback since Everybody, which totally broke the mold from anything they had done previously, and yet still had their signature written all over it. That’s the thing about SHINee. More than perhaps any other KPop group, they’ve built a brand that embraces risk taking, leaving critics to say, “Didn’t expect that from SHINee, but Wow!” It’s how they stay relevant, even after 13 successful years in the business; they evolve, never resting on their laurels. Still they never stray from that which makes their sound, no matter the “genre”, quintessentially SHINee. It’s true, this song is “darker” than previous releases, but only because its theme reflects a more experienced aspect of love, a cynical one that emerges from a toxic relationship, unlike many of their earlier songs that reflect either a starry-eyed naivety, or innocent heartbreak. They’re grown ass men now, not little boys running after noona, hoping she’ll notice them, which is as it should be after 13 yrs.
I've never been into Shinee, I've always respected them but was never a fan. That being said I absolutely LOVE this song, it made me start to look more into their discography and I'm currently obsessed with Key and his solos. I agree that the chorus (the second part) screams EXO, it reminds me of old EXO's songs like Mama and Overdose but overall it feels fresh, 10 out of 10, best songs of the year so far.
I'm a EXO-L for many years and I do liking SHINee music when I started listening to kpop back in around 2012. The whole final outcome is so good and very SHINee, even it's very intense hip-hop track which initially for BoA. They added their colour into it (light and refreshing) and both Minho and Key suits the concept of the era the most, as they really stand out so much in this comeback unlike the previous eras. Tbh, this song remind me a lot of Obsession in terms of music composition and lyrics (yeah and I just know that it's the same producer producing both song) and also Tempo (bridge)😂
As a fan of SHINee for 7+ years, I have to say I've been highly anticipating this kind of comeback title track from them! - they debuted as a contemporary group, so to be different each comeback is kind of their brand and I've been waiting for this style of song! It's not the first time they've done hip hop though; here are some SHINee tracks that I personally think have a similar vibe to Don't Call Me 😊 -Forever or Never (2008) -Obsession (2010) -One Minute Back (2013) -Seesaw (Korean Ver.) (2014) -Alive (2015) I really recommend listening to the whole album, it has the SHINee flavour that you'd expect!😊
Obsession and One minute back are amazing, although I think they dont really sound anything like this title track :P Yes they are dark, but thats the only thing that binds them to this one. Odd eye could also be added.
A lot of the album has tracks that are more typical of their sound, but I think they wanted to try something new for the title track. I do think that they still have that classic SHINee/SM sound in the chorus because of the huge group vocals and harmonies, but the overall track and instrumentals are definitely different.
I'll say it again....SHINee has always been UNPREDICTABLE. I'm always baffled when people say, "this isn't a SHINee song," or "this isn't the SHINee sound". I wonder how long these people have actually been into SHINee, because if you've been with them for a while, then you would know that SHINee is always experimenting and trying new genres, mixing genres, and creating their own genres in order to give us new sounds and present a new side of themselves. Taemin does the exact same thing. Back in their early career, people were always saying how different SHINee's music was. When "Lucifer" came out people were shocked; when "Sherlock" came out people were shocked; when "Why So Serious" came out people were shocked, etc............... They've proven over and over again that nothing is out of their element. The guys specifically said that they had never tried hip-hop, so they decided to go for it and do something new, as usual. However, they didn't just do hip-hop. They combined hip-hop with elements of R&B and classical musical theater for this song. Something no other group has done, as usual. So, my question for those thinking this song was not what they were expecting or that it doesn't sound like a SHINee song....why? With their experimental history in music, why? With the vast array of genres and mixed genres in their discography, why? I'm just really curious. The element that makes SHINee uniquely SHINee is their voices, their harmonies, and their performances. THAT is what makes a SHINee song. Regarding the visuals and set of the MV, this MV is directly linked to the SM Universe Theory and the SHINee Universe (as confirmed by Taemin in their own reaction to their "Don't Call Me" MV at the @ mark). It all started in 2012. Watch their intro VCR to their 2012 SWC II Concert: ua-cam.com/video/EH5CEYErluo/v-deo.html (very beginning to @). They witnessed the destruction of EXO planet and then were "called", as Earth's guardians, to intercept the same meteor from destroying Earth. Look at the stairs they climb up to be transported -- same as in Taemin's "IDEA" MV. Also, in this MV Taemin levitates (just like his SuperM Character trailer) and then he is in the forefront of the other members in front of a spiral mirror/thing and suddenly we travel through a tunnel (same as Kai in "Jopping") and are teleported to a partial replica of the station in space, you can see the planets/stars in the background.
Perfectly said 👏🏻👏🏻 like if you only listen to shinee title tracks in a playlist you don’t know if you should dance, cry, be aggressive or be happy 😄 and i LOVE it about them. Also thank you for the information about the MV i didn’t know it😮
I think choosing Don't Call Me as the title track for this comeback was a very smart choice, because they needed something impactful that would make the more recent kpop fans wonder who are these guys? It's true that a hip-hop based song is not very common for SHINee, they have like two b-sides like that, but for a comeback it's new. However, they're always doing new things. Like Sherlock was so different when it was released, or Everybody, a dubstep song that was a very rare thing in kpop in 2013 and they did it, or View, which was the gateway to deep house into kpop, so yeah, they're trying new things that might seem weird but at the end of the day have pretty great results! I love SHINee for that.
Are you going to be doing a Shinee deep dive? They always change up their concept every couple of comebacks so I'm interested in what era would be your favorite.
Omg I thought that too. The biggest way it sounds different is due to the difference between the colours of Chen and onews voices. Both are AMAZING vocalists.
THIS IS WHAT I WAS WAITING FOR!!❤️❤️ P.S: I really like this comeback and glad SHINee is doing something new. I know groups all have a certain distinct sounds, but I feel like a comeback should be a chance for groups to try different sounds. And this sound really works for SHINee!❤️
I think one thing that definitely makes it a SHInee song are the lyrics, perhaps it works because of their age and three members are post military service. I couldn’t see NCT singing such lyrics, not even EXO, not yet anyways. I think Key killed this song, him and his hats.
Agree! Also all producers of the song are producers that worked with SM for so long so it definitely has that SM sound. And I really don't see NCT sing this song as a title track or even b-side it's not their style. I think the people say it seems like nct song just because 1) it's hip hop influenced and has a certain SM sound. 2) they are not familiar with SHINee's discography Especially their Japanese songs.
This song to me, feels like a edgier version of obsession. The concept is a bit similar, in this case it's more of romance gone wrong type of thing. I really love it and the album, WOW!!!!!!!!!
You should really check out their "exclusive interview" with SBS and Inkigayo, maybe for patreon. It takes you into a deeper view about their career and the journey up to making Don't Call Me. Really interesting and insightful-they changed the song 6 times before coming to its current form. It is definitely is different from their other title tracks, but they mentioned that even for this chorus-they didn't want a typical drop chorus so maybe it doesn't hit as hard, but it's on purpose because it is meant to be less conventional. Just some interesting thoughts. The B-sides definitely go back to that retro, harmony-focused style.
I think soundwise, what sets this comeback apart from all of their previous ones, is that it's the first one to not have any type of Jonghyun's contribution to the creative process. Having a hip-hop title track was their personal choice since they had never tried it before and also they wanted to emphasize the choreo (btw they've done hard and complex choreos like this in the past). Knowing SHINee and their diversity, I went into this with no expectations and in general I have to say I'm proud!
This was my first SHINee comeback and yes, the sound is different. I’d like to think that no one would pigeonhole them into one genre because obviously they did it very well. They reminded us why they’re kings and why everyone should stan SHINee.
As somebody who’s listened to SHINee for a long time, people saying, “woah, I didn’t expect that” is SHINee’s whole brand. People always talk about SHINee being “bright and bubbly and refreshing”, while forgetting even title tracks that are dark or intense, like Ring Ding Dong, Everybody, Amigo, and Lucifer. Aside from harmonization, I think the thing that’s most “SHINee” is experimentalism and genre-bending. Given that, I don’t think you could get much more “SHINee” than this song.
Thank you for your reaction and review, PD! SHINee members said in interviews how they wanted to try something new, but not necessarily a "never done before" type of sound or concept. They explained how that can be a little stressing bc there's always big expectations with them. As a shawol I do prefer their more retro/pop and r&b type of music, but I like Don't Call Me and it's having a good response in Korea! I think this comeback just showcased how versatile SHINee are. They're amazing artists with a long trajectory and they keep doing amazing. I'm really proud of them! ❤️ I hope you can do a first listen to their album, IS REALLY GOOD! Anyway, great video as always!✨
It's interesting people think DCM doesn't sound similar to any Shinee title songs, it immediately reminded me of a darker, more agressive and updated Sherlock.
I think we can call "Don't Call Me" the perfect reintroduction of SHINee to the current 4th generation of Kpop, in particular, the 4th generation /of SM/. It's epic, it's spruced up with multiple genres in the same song, it has a harmonized chorus. While I'm not a ShaWol, I follow SHINee's music closely, and I definitely agree that DCM is super different from the rest of their typical title tracks. I'd say it's because while SHINee have been inactive for the past few years, that "futuristic EDM pop" sound has mostly gone to NCT (see: Superhuman) and SuperM (see: their entire discography). This comeback was necessary for SHINee to kind of not only reintegrate into the current generation, but to also reinvent themselves with the perfect SM / SHINee signature. If I had to speculate what could've been the more "normal" title track for this era, it probably would've been Heart Attack (reminiscent of Married to the Music), Marry You (light, fluffy, still brilliantly harmonized), or CØDE (especially CØDE, which is basically Sherlock's child). But, I'm very glad they decided to go for Don't Call Me. It's perfectly aggressive, has that now-signature SM sound, and SHINee being the concept kings they are, reinvented themselves while also staying in their (very versatile) lane.
It's also not what I was expecting, but then I remembered that shinee brought us Lucifer, Everybody and Why so serious. Every comeback from them is something different, so this song being something they haven't done before, seems to fit.
As a very old Shawol I can say that what makes a SHINee song have the SHINee sound, is them. Just Kibum said that their strength is Onew's voice. He has one of the most distintic and beautiful voices I've ever heard in the music industry in general. Kibum also has a very distintic sound and that's what I love about SHINee, you can really tell them apart and know is a SHINee song just because of their voices (Jonghyun also added A LOT to that dynamic, like the man just created a new song by singing it with his style). You can give them any song and it will still sound like SHINee. Maybe is me being biased haha but I truly believe this. Thank you for reacting, btw!
Definitely the bridge is something else and so unique! It sold me the song the first time! Cause it took me more than two times hearing to get familiar with such a different song!
For me… the song reminded me of Shinee’s Get The Treasure Japanese title track, but aggressive… including b-sides… it reminded me of Alive, Evil and Dynamite. ps: loved the theater of the piano at the end.
I get that many people including PD aren't SHINee fans and don't know their music beside few title tracks, but SHINee has always been an experimental and contemporary group since their debut it's their brand and one of the things they are known for is how they always experimented with their style they aren't limited to a certain style for the comments saying they never did a song like this before, they did do songs like this before as b-sides on their Korean albums & on their Japanese albums. Minho & Key had verses and rap parts that were this strong or aggressive before. And SHINee are knowing for their harmonization even in their title tracks they do it most of the time so I'm confused at the comment about how is that new to them when they always do that it isn't new to them The song was meant for BoA by the way and they wanted it and she didn't take it because the song felt more fitting for a group
I've felt since the first time I heard it, that with SHINee usually leading the way into New music genres, this song isn't new for K-pop but it's very new for SHINee. This is the sound SM has been leaning on so much for the past few years. I agree that it has an NCT song. I have grown to really love the song but it still jars me for a second because my body expects to hear NCT vocals and when SHINee's very distinct vocals kick in I'm thrown for half a second. But I still love it. I do enjoy the rest of the album more (this album might be one of my favourites for bside tracks) but I do love the song. But I also hope they continue to expand and don't just stay in this zone because SM wants it.
Ill be honest, this song took me by surprise. It took me like 3 days to start loving it, I was just confused in the beginning. And your right it sounded like an NCT song flipped in a Shinee universe.
Hi PD! This is also my first SHINee comeback but I was already familiar with Key and Taemin. ONEW has wrecked my bias line. Love the album and the last song Kind is my favorite.
This is what makes SHINee unique. They never stick to just one genre, As a contemporary group, they always want to try something new. It's refreshing to see them doing hip hop as they were supposed to debut as a hip hop group. If you wanna have that SHINee touch in the album I recommend you listen to CODE or KIND.
I’m not Shinee stan, I like some title tracks but that’s it. Saying that I LOVE this song, I singing this song all day since the song got out, the vocals are dope, the sound is so good! So for me is a 11/10
I think the point of having Don't Call Me as the title track is because it IS different. From choreo, to sound... and I believe SHINee wanted to show that they can still keep up with "current trends" for being an almost 13 year old group and somehow make it with a SHINee flare.
They did an in depth interview talking about their song choices and how SHINee themselves played a part in this production apart from singing and dancing. If I remember correctly, it should be on SBS UA-cam channel. You should check that out, it helps you gain more insight on their vision for this comeback, but also SHINee's artistry which is what makes them so unique and stand out
Thank you for your reaction PD! They really spice things up through the bridge. Didn’t expect the dramatic piano and it surprisingly made the song better for me. Pre-release, SHINee been saying that their title track this time will ‘sound’ different, including different lyrics. They usually sing sweet songs, that talk about chasing girls but this one’s quite straightforward about rejecting other’s obsessiveness. It’s actually quite a smart move because the title track could attract non-fans and their b-sides will satisfy fans. Especially how their b-sides were actually nominated for title track that sounded more ‘SHINee’-ish. Maybe you’ll check it out?
I have been a fan for a long time. This comeback definitely surprised me. With SHINee, you always expect the unexpected. They pride themselves on always being different and new. Thanks for checking it out.
I'll be honest, as someone who is also a new fan I was surprised too when I heard DCM too CØDE has much more of the SHINee sound but again, like you said, I definitely don't think the song is terrible!! but the sound/chorus has more of the EXO color. I think something to note is that SHINee did want to do a change and the teaser pics kinda allude to this darker theme? It shows them as vibrant and colorful but there's a false sense of reality with it. It brings context to the song and maybe to show they can do this as well? Overall I agree with you 💯 👌 and your review is really fair and really good!! Also SHINee did have input to the song, they said they worked on it over and over, so I don't doubt SM changed it up.
@@babylionssirenblack1595 i did what you said, I totally see what you mean!!! I can see why they could definitely put this as a title! Thank you so much :3
Loved,, loved, loved the song. I feel this is what they needed for a comeback. They have gained new fans with this comeback. Now a new generation will be enlighten by this group. Yay SHINee.
I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding of how SM produces songs. From the ReacttotheK interview with former SM International A&R, SM usually creates a Songwriting Camp which is attended by producers outside Korea or Korean producers themselves. Many Korean producers actually produce SM songs. But it is covered by the fact that SM uses western producers more often than other companies. But it does not mean that SM uses more foreign producers than Korean producers to produce their songs. Besides that, actually, SM doesn't prohibit its artists from writing songs, but the truth is that the song production competition in SM is very tough. Everyone (new producers, experienced producers, and artists) is required to make demos to participate in songwriting camp and SM uses a "blind" system (we don't know who the demos were made by) to choose songs to be released that are sure to fit with the musical direction of SM artists. CMIIW.
SHINee recently did an interview Onew said he didn’t think the melody of this song was strong enough originally, so they worked on this song a lot before they were happy with it as SHINee song. So your analysis of the top line not sounding like something written by a western producer is spot on, I think!
Yes, the song was produced by the same person (Dem jointz) who produces exo and nct. All their B-sides on the album though, still sounds very shinee, so they still have that signature sound. It took me a few listens to really love the title track. But the b-sides are sooo good! Instantly loved them!
when i first heard the song i was like “.... they nctified shinee??” BUT then i listened to the bsides and they are very shinee sounding so it made me v v happy. ALSO i feel like if you’re used to the sound of other shinee songs then this one is definitely more of a grower. the more i listen to it the more and more i love it
I find it funny when I hear people say this is not a "SHINee sound" or "it doesn't sound like SHINee" and I'm just there like "yeah, that's what they do lol" as a SHINee fan for years I've already learnt that they always do something different and innovative, often setting trends in the industry that other artists later try to replicate (anyone remember View era and the trend that followed, how almost every other group and their mother tried to do something similar?) so yeah, even though Don't Call Me wasn't something I expected either I am still proud of SHINee for always trying new things and not just staying in the "safe zone" :> thank you for reacting to their latest comeback! disclaimer: the beginning is not a criticism towards PD or anything in case anyone even had that idea
Something that I found exceedingly interesting about the sound of this comeback, is the fact that it wasn't actually supposed to be a Shinee song, for what I heard. I heard that it was supposed to be a girlgroup song, and apparently, even BoA tried to do this song but it just didn't work for her(?), so I quite like the song for that aspect as well!
Great in-depth analysis of the song :) Totally agree with a lot of the musical viewpoints. Also, SHINee's been around for more than a decade- 13 years now- so perfect time to come back with something completely new!
SHINee is a contemporary group so they will always experiment with genres
Right! Just as they have always done, which means this is nothing new in the sense that they give us a new sound with every comeback. So why is everyone so surprised?
Shinee have not done a conceptual shift this big since Sherlock.
This song is the title track to their Dont call me album, so I am interested where they take the album conceptually.

so true :)
this comeback feels like their take on 4th gen sound/concept but the whole album is soooooooo quintessential SHINee
Totally agree! The whole album is filled with gems and that shinee touch
Thats exactly what i thought:)
Right, the album is nothing like the title track 😂 I love it.
To me still true to SHINee their titles tracks are always a new sound every time. I love DCM and the rest of the album.
@@whereisja agreed. sm's experimental group didn't disappoint!
“Our one and only brand new sponsor. That’s right, Me”

“i didn’t expect shinee to...” yeah it’s the contemporary band for me and everyone else in the industry
that's SHINee ^^
Yes
TH I S! Like I used to be annoyed when people are like "this is shinee" or "That is shinee" and there is no single SHINee side
Truth
They definitely just put out whatever they want and they always make the right choice because all of their songs are great
1) the most interesting part is actually was the fact that the song was meant for BoA but she said it fit a group more & Minho wanted the song so they took it
2) the song was produced by Lee Soo Man & composed by dem jointz and Kenzie & written entirely by Kenzie & arranged by Yoo Young-jin
. SHINee mentioned they wrote 4 different lyrics for the song but lsm rejected all of them because he felt the lyrics Kenzie wrote fit the song the most
3) they never had hip-hop based title track & they wanted to try it. They had songs like that as b-sides ( & on their Japanese releases) actually but yeah never as the title track
4) it is true the song fit Key the most he really owns this entire song for me. they all good but he really shines the most in it
5) About the mv, they filmed at another location too for the opening parts, but due to time & other stuff, they edited a lot of it & made the mv more focused on the performance. the last part from the bridge till the end of the mv was meant to look like that though
lastly, the album is great hope you give it a listen
actually your comment helped me understand some reactors/commenters with your 3rd ppl. i kept being so confused when ppl said that shinee never had a song like this/an aggressive song, and i just couldn't understand but i guess most ppl only know the title tracks! thanks for giving so much info to new fans/potential shawols
@@NaraKwonPoD no problem & yeah many who aren't into SHINee only know a few of their title tracks and never listened to their full album or even know about their Japanese releases so it could be a very new side of SHINee to them
agree, I love their B-side Marry You and Body Rhythm
I agree this is definitely Key's song. At the same time I think Minho shines in this but I could be biased (he's my favourite member)!
uhh yoo youngjin and shinee is just the perfect combo
I just need SHINee voices to make it a “SHINee sound”. Actually they commented that they choose this as tittle track cuz it was different to what they did before, and they wanted something powerful. They changed it a lot from the original demo until they were satisfied.
I was about to comment the same thing. They wanted to do this track. I believe it was Onew that said they were very proud of this song.
yep I said the exact same thing. SHINee music mostly sounded SHINee-ish because of their voices. And this concept is something they've never tried before, which adds on to the diversity of SHINee's music once again :)
I think in a way, it’s VERY SHINee! The twists and dramatics and genre bending is so so soooo SHINee!
Good comment!
Yes, SHINee has always been a Trendsetter!!!
yashhh so true :) shinee always show every genre if their comeback, and this genre same with album DxDxDx but their give something in the song💎💎💎💎💎
Yes, they are experimental and contemporary. More than any other group
Well said louderr
not to be dramatic but kibum is so hot in this... the album is incredible! they really delivered such a coherent album where every track has that SHINee sound. Worth the wait!
key really had the nerve to make me watch this mv like 20 times lol
@@freezenut samee
Be dramatic! Key is so the mood and just hits so striking :)
Exactly!
That's very true!!
100% agree!
For me, as a shawol, DCM has totally an SHINee sound.
I agree this song is basically SHINee saying "SHINee's back" without using these exact words.
Hm... no, this title track is definitely not like their others but a lot has happened in the kpop industry since 2018.
Well shinee haven’t ever really done the same thing though
@@Momoofx I 100% agree with that
Also, I think the material and "sound" that they will/can create is different because of Jonghyun.
ONEW wearing that red hat thingy...
...I still can't get over it.
He is HOT.
He is ❤️
In this house we say JINKI SUPREMACY🖤🤝
You're just stating facts😌👌
It's a durag, not a hat. It is something that Black ppl wear to protect their hair and train the texture of short hair (called waves). Many Black ppl feel very strongly abt kpop idols wearing durags (Kai wore that sparkly one in Mhmm). This is a good example of the problem with kpop and appropriation of Black culture as fashion.
agreee!!!!
OK no one is gonna talk about onew's vocals shining in this song?
RIGHT? He just talked about the set while Onew was singing his lungs out...
@@elianameaguad Exactly...i think his voice really suited the song. His parts are my favorite parts in the song
THAT is what made me love this song!!!!!
@@elianameaguad oh, pd goes by no masculine pronouns
If you want the Shinee you expected i would highly recommend "Code" on their album!!
Yessss that's the best song of the album for me, I thought the same thing when I heard for the first time
OMG I LOVE CODE!!! I listen to it on repeat because it's SO GOOD!!
“CODE” and “Heart Attack” are great and more “Shinee style.” “Kind” shows off their vocals very well.
code & heart attack are fkn incredible.
Kind is really amazing!
everyone saying that SHINee's dont call me concept is new for them clearly didn't watch Ring Ding Dong and Lucifer,,,
And their b-sides / japanese songs
Exactly!!!!!
You're totally right! This is why i'm really weirded out when people find this song new and fresh for them
I was looking for this comment because I can't be the only one!!
Can we scream about the song "Get it" ?!?!
Exactly & for bside - Alive, dynamite, evil etc etc
"Using the same set in three different ways"
SM: "it's called minimalism"
Haha lol I get that joke
If you know, you know 😉
It's called being environmental friendly
Who else is just listening to the silence but can hear the song playing in our mind?
me
this song was initially for boa,but she refused it saying this would go better with a group...
so minho was like:
"give it to us 😂"
Love ur username tho😂
May i ask when they mentioned this?
이수만 선생님, nct 드림은 언제 컴백할까요? 😂
He really stood out this time with his beautiful vocals, sexy visuals and that dope ass feather hat.
highly reccomend listening to the whole album, it's really refreshing and very SHINee
If I'm not mistaken, the producer for Don't Call Me, Dem Jointz, also produced EXO's Obsession and NCT 127's Kick It. If you listen closely to all these songs intros, they have the same producer tag
Yes u got that right
really? i was thinking when i saw it how it reminded me of obsession!!
Yep! Dem Jointz produced all 3 songs.
Yes, he was one of the producers along with Kenzie, Yoo Young-jin, Robbin and Ryan S. Jhun
I've heard that "producer tag" in a SuperM song as well. It's weird because it's subtle but it's there!
And to think this was a song that was meant to go to BoA
WWHAT LMAO
Yes but she rejected it because it sounded like a group song. And she was absolutely right.
The more I listen to this track the more SHINee it sounds. It’s a strange thing because I was shocked the first time too, and I thought I wouldn’t love it, but it caught me and wouldn’t let me go and now I hear familiar SHINee elements that I missed on first listen.
I know!!! Same here
for real, took me a couple of casual listening and some reaction videos to really grasp the melody and rhythm. say less, i ended up bopping this for HOURS like stucked on the top of my playlist🤣
SHINee is a whole cultural reset. AND THAT IS ON PERIOD.
Agree!
This make sense
The kings are back stronger then ever
Fun fact both Don't Call Me and Obsession composed by Dem Jointz. He also composed many SM tracks like cherry bomb, Kick it, Cloud 9 and some others.
Literally SAME
This cb made me a Shawol
As a fan of SHINee for 7+ years, I have to say I've been highly anticipating this kind of comeback title track from them! - they debuted as a contemporary group, so to be different each comeback is kind of their brand and I've been waiting for this style of song! It's not the first time they've done hip hop though; here are some SHINee tracks that I personally think have a similar vibe to Don't Call Me 😊
-Forever or Never (2008)
-Obsession (2010)
-One Minute Back (2013)
-Seesaw (Korean Ver.) (2014)
-Alive (2015)
I really recommend listening to the whole album, it has the SHINee flavour that you'd expect!😊
Exactly! I am so happy with this comeback
Obsession and One minute back are amazing, although I think they dont really sound anything like this title track :P Yes they are dark, but thats the only thing that binds them to this one. Odd eye could also be added.
God, I love those tracks!
I think one of the members said they were planning on filming in a hotel but it didn’t work out. Which is maybe why they used that one set so much
oh really? I didn't know
That set was just CG according to Key. Haha
This song kind of reminds me of early day Exo a little bit
Omg I thought that too. The biggest way it sounds different is due to the difference between the colours of Chen and onews voices. Both are AMAZING vocalists.
YESS. I mean I love SHINee but i do ult EXO wich is why im so in love with these CB!!! they deliver it so well
for me, obsession
@@arthurmedeiros6398 ooo yeah the bass does sound like obsession. But sm does tend to create similar sounds between their groups
SM groups remind me of SM groups.
I've listened to so much SHINee that nothing they release seems out of the ordinary for them
THIS IS WHAT I WAS WAITING FOR!!❤️❤️
P.S: I really like this comeback and glad SHINee is doing something new. I know groups all have a certain distinct sounds, but I feel like a comeback should be a chance for groups to try different sounds.
And this sound really works for SHINee!❤️
SHINee is the standard😩🤚🏼
I honestly have no clue what I was expecting for this cb, but it wasn’t this. However, I very much like this song a lot, it is very much adequate
This song to me, feels like a edgier version of obsession. The concept is a bit similar, in this case it's more of romance gone wrong type of thing. I really love it and the album, WOW!!!!!!!!!
the producers of obsession also took part in this song's productions as well!!!
Nah this is absolutely album of the year, all the bsides are addictive especially body rhythm
PD i would recommend to listen the the album because is so so good!
I hope you can do a first listen to their album, IS REALLY GOOD!
Anyway, great video as always!✨
It's interesting people think DCM doesn't sound similar to any Shinee title songs, it immediately reminded me of a darker, more agressive and updated Sherlock.
I'm a Shawol since 2013 and I love they did this. Nothing to complain.
same, that's their magic they slay every style💎
"This is not what i expected"

Welcome to SHINee PD :D
13 years in the industry and SHINee is still out here reinventing themselves and bringing the unexpected 🥰🥰
You really should listen to the album, i feel like the b-sides have more of that SHINee sound you were waiting for!!!
100% agree, SHINee unique voices and their blend/harmony is what makes SHINee SHINee :)
Shinee was given a lot more creative freedom in this than before hiatus
Definitely the bridge is something else and so unique! It sold me the song the first time! Cause it took me more than two times hearing to get familiar with such a different song!
For me… the song reminded me of Shinee’s Get The Treasure Japanese title track, but aggressive… including b-sides… it reminded me of Alive, Evil and Dynamite.
ps: loved the theater of the piano at the end.
Omg I felt like code and another song on the album had like get the treasure vibes!!!!
get the treasure is one of my favorite title tracks and i thought the same thing! that group dance break near the end gave me major deja vu!
I get that many people including PD aren't SHINee fans and don't know their music beside few title tracks, but SHINee has always been an experimental and contemporary group since their debut it's their brand and one of the things they are known for is how they always experimented with their style they aren't limited to a certain style
for the comments saying they never did a song like this before, they did do songs like this before as b-sides on their Korean albums & on their Japanese albums. Minho & Key had verses and rap parts that were this strong or aggressive before. And SHINee are knowing for their harmonization even in their title tracks they do it most of the time so I'm confused at the comment about how is that new to them when they always do that it isn't new to them
The song was meant for BoA by the way and they wanted it and she didn't take it because the song felt more fitting for a group
It's definitely different than their norm but I think they pulled it off great. I love the way they made the song their own!
I left a "Don't call me" video to watch this hehe

So for me is a 11/10
All I can say is: SHINee's back.
I think the point of having Don't Call Me as the title track is because it IS different. From choreo, to sound... and I believe SHINee wanted to show that they can still keep up with "current trends" for being an almost 13 year old group and somehow make it with a SHINee flare.
I don't feel like SHINee has ever been in a box, in a certain genre. They've always set the trend, be it Sound, Fashion, etc.
They did an in depth interview talking about their song choices and how SHINee themselves played a part in this production apart from singing and dancing.
If I remember correctly, it should be on SBS UA-cam channel. You should check that out, it helps you gain more insight on their vision for this comeback, but also SHINee's artistry which is what makes them so unique and stand out
SHINee's back.
SHINee is also synonymous with experimentation. So they have stayed true to the group identity.
It's interesting that "Don't Call Me" was originally intended for BoA! I wonder how it would have sounded then. 😊
Apparently very different.
They said they changed the song up a lot, to give it a SHINee stamp.
As u said u are a new fan so i understand. Visit their bsides tracks. They have made the same sort of sounds on their 2013 to 2015 releases.
@@babylionssirenblack1595 i did what you said, I totally see what you mean!!! I can see why they could definitely put this as a title! Thank you so much :3
Yeeeees I have the same thoughts about the chorus ! Great reaction as always, I also LOVE the bridge, this piano is *chief's kiss*
Loved,, loved, loved the song. I feel this is what they needed for a comeback. They have gained new fans with this comeback. Now a new generation will be enlighten by this group. Yay SHINee.
Shinee have always experimented with their stuff and have always pulled it off
Yessssssss I’ve been waiting for thissss.😭😭😭😭😭
KNEW you'd love that prechorus and it's choreo. your description was spot on. it's SO good
yas, I'VE BEEN WAITING. Love your reactions...they're on point
If you wanna listeng a similar style from SHINee you should listen to Alive, it's from the Odd album
Surely I wasn’t the only one singing this right from the beginning to the end... even throwing in Minho’s ad-libs and the piano part 💀😂😂
Title track is very new for them and the album b-sides is very shinee og sounds. With even a synth-pop song called "Cøde" check it out.
I love how in-depth you go with your analysis. Key and Minho really shine in this. Thank you!
Yes, the song was produced by the same person (Dem jointz) who produces exo and nct. All their B-sides on the album though, still sounds very shinee, so they still have that signature sound. It took me a few listens to really love the title track. But the b-sides are sooo good! Instantly loved them!
"OOHHH that was SSSSSPICY" summs it all.
when i first heard the song i was like “.... they nctified shinee??” BUT then i listened to the bsides and they are very shinee sounding so it made me v v happy. ALSO i feel like if you’re used to the sound of other shinee songs then this one is definitely more of a grower. the more i listen to it the more and more i love it
This is not usual SHINee is the most SHINee thing because they’re always reinventing themselves and always pulling it off. Kings
I find it funny when I hear people say this is not a "SHINee sound" or "it doesn't sound like SHINee" and I'm just there like "yeah, that's what they do lol"
as a SHINee fan for years I've already learnt that they always do something different and innovative, often setting trends in the industry that other artists later try to replicate (anyone remember View era and the trend that followed, how almost every other group and their mother tried to do something similar?)
so yeah, even though Don't Call Me wasn't something I expected either I am still proud of SHINee for always trying new things and not just staying in the "safe zone" :>
thank you for reacting to their latest comeback!
disclaimer: the beginning is not a criticism towards PD or anything in case anyone even had that idea
