      @coca girl : That's because it's the American Dobermann.
      The European Dobermann, (the original breed) has a slightly less 'pretty' face - and tends to be slightly larger/more solid in build too.
      Most people, (unless they are serious dog enthusiasts) are only familiar with what is actually the American breed that came later, (partly due to that being the breed most people will have seen in movies and t.v.).

    In almost 20 years of being a vet. tech. the Doberman is my favorite breed, only one time was there a problem. a big male brought in for a monthly problem, he was guarding his young owner, and when I asked her to leave the exam room, he was fine. But then he began to guard me.. LOL He came down with neurologic disease,But I will always remember him.

    I was I was very pleasantly surprised to see that you had done this training at Fiesta Island in San Diego California. It is one of the best places to go to do any kind of social training for sure because they have not only off-leash area for dogs that is massive including a Beach area but they also have an area that is fenced off and separated from the off-leash area before the more" nervous" or "agressive" dogs. I love to go in there with my dog as often as we could and though my dog was not a Doberman the Dobermans that were apart of the group that frequented there loved my dog and treated him as if he was a dobi

    Using a high pitch voice to set the tone is a wonderful soother to introductions as it elicits endorphins and oxytocin. When dogs meet they are meeting potential foes. Just like us, dogs have a stranger danger REGARDLESS of how many dogs they have met in the past. When I have two dogs meeting who are posturing and about to go at it, that's when I lay it on EVEN THICKER with my voice..and voila..I divert the fight and work on making them friends. Dogs really need US to tell them that something is Friend, Foe or Prey and high pitch voice and loose leash (to avoid fight or flight response) does just that. Each time your dog "checks in" it consider how nice it would be if you would acknowledge it with your voice too(I use a sharp high good). High pitch voice reassures dogs and dogs who seem apprehensive gain a lot of support from who is Captaining the ship of their life if we would simply use it. Being humans who have been brought up to be "quiet" and not wanting to "draw attention" to ourselves we are conditioned not to use this CRUCIAL tool we have right within us.

    at the 3:24 mark i must make a comment that pack behaviour and socialization must be learned through off tether free trial and error for the DOG and not the owners discretion. I had a 105 lbs. cane corso /boxer mix and I "handed him over" to the pack at a similar dog-style beach run as a pup and under 2 year old. Best thing i ever did,; he knew his place; his abilities, his strengths and weaknesses....man if you could have seen him adapt it was primordial and beautiful to behold. my next next dog may be a Dobie, i really like them.

    Hi. you have a beautiful, well-trained dog there. Could you give me some pointers on how to train my Doberman. He is 9 months old now and barely listens to anything. He is overly energetic. I am from Malaysia and my country is really hot so we can't really bring the dog for exercise outdoors as we fear he might get a heat stroke. I believe this pent up energy is causing him to be too rambunctious. Any tips?

    • @shadowlord688
      @shadowlord688 8 років тому +3

      any dog whose not mentally & physically stimulated may develop aggression..you can take him out early in the morning or late in the evening & he should be fine..a walk might not be enough as they need to drain the pent up energy so if you run then it should be OK otherwise get a bike & have him run along you..a dog tread mill can be used as well...keep this in mind that aggression development has many causes & it should be controlled so I would highly recommend firm obedience training..

    Having your dog on a leash at a dog park is probably the worst thing you can do for the dog. Makes them feel attached to you and usually results in insecurity and aggression.

    • @legendsdogtraining

      Normally, I completely agree with what you're saying. I would not do this with the average dog. This was kind of an experiment. The long line provided a little bit more guidance in a scenario that normally caused a frenzy. But the better and safer way to do this is by working with him one on one with another neutral dog, where he's better able to regulate his arousal and social skills. Hi Alyssa I planning on buying a dobie puppy very soon. Im 20 now but when I had my first dog at 14 he had bad habbits like jumping on guests, very agressive when I walked him outside and he ran away a ton. Most of this was because I didn't properly socialize him and got frustrated when he didn't listen. Do you think I should avoid babying him as a puppy ie. letting him rest on my chest, letting him jump on me, carrying him constantly? In other words since a canine grows so quickly I dont want him to think those habits are okay when hes older. But what do I do when he exhibits that behavior as a puppy. Do i tell him no or physically move him? I dont want to get frustrated and exert that on my dog so he becomes frustrated.

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  7 років тому

      @Fruitypalasha Hi! Here are a few quick tips. 1. Start your training in an EASY environment, like your living room. A good foundation is established in a space where there is nothing else competing for your puppy's attention. 2. Feeding Schedules improve training results. Make sure your puppy is on a healthy schedule of three meals per day (switch to two meals when she is somewhere around 10 - 12 months). Pick up anything that she doesn't eat after five minutes. 3. Motivation is key. Use food that your puppy is happy to work for. I use cut up food rolls like Happy Howie rolls (beef, turkey or lamb). This is moist meaty food that is easy to break into small bits without crumbling. It is also nutritious which is really important since you're going to be doing a lot of training with your puppy. 4. Train Silently: Establish behavior first, by building a strong reinforcement history and then start pairing it with a verbal cue like "sit" or "down". 5. Generalization: Once your dog is a training rock star in your living room, you need to begin the process of generalizing to new environments, surfaces, distractions and reinforcement. (Good training requires A LOT of generalization) Common mistakes in training are: introducing verbal cues too soon, not understanding the importance of motivation in training and attempting to train with something that is just not significant enough to your dog, skipping steps and assuming that the training practiced in one environment or in one context will immediately carry over into other situations. Enjoy the process. If you are feeling frustrated by your puppy's responses it is probably because your expectations exceed what your puppy is realistically capable of offering. Good training is all about breaking the criteria down into baby steps, and slowly building on it. If you want more customized training advice you can go to my website to set up a phone consultation. My website is www.legendsdogtraining.com and fill out the behavior assessment form. I do phone consultations and guided training for people all over the country and abroad. Alyssa, I have a dobie similar to yours, 1 year old. He is a great dog except that if he jumps up on our bed or sofa to rest or sleep, he will growl at us if we touch him or interrupt his rest in any way. I don't like that at all so told all family members to not let him get up on beds or sofa.
    Any advice?

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  8 років тому

      +rafael55 Hey! Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you. I think that improving communication is a goal that everyone should have with their dog, but becomes even more important when a dog exhibits any type of aggressive tendencies. Teaching him to rest in his dog bed vs. the couch/human bed is a good start. One of the most common mistakes that people make with aggression is they try to verbally or physically reprimand the dog when they growl or show their teeth. This can suppress warning signals, but intensify the underlying stress that fuels that aggression. The better way to address the issue is to teach your dog to respond to certain fundamental cues (this is where communication comes in). Positively reinforce (recommend using breakfast, dinner or a high value, nutritious food) to teach your dog to become fluent with "go to place" (a training mat or dog bed) and "off the couch." Training needs to be established in low stress, low stake situations, and systematically built up to high stress, high stake scenarios. Make training and subsequent interactions positive so that you're not unintentionally throwing fuel on the fire and exacerbating the aggression. Resorting to punitive measures (ie. grabbing his collar, issuing a hard stare or raising your voice) will likely result in a more contentious relationship. If you want to set up a skype or phone consultation, fill out this behavior assessment form: www.legendsdogtraining.com/assessment-form.html - the consultation is usually about an hour and a half for aggression issues, costs $125 dollars, and includes a write out of training and management recommendations. - Alyssa Lapinel, CPDT-KA www.legendsdogtraining.com

    • @rafael55
      @rafael55 8 років тому

      +Alyssa Lapinel I understand what you are saying. Since we have not let him get up on bed's or sofa we have not had this problem any more. And yes, I will work more on basic obedience.
      One question. On socializing. Can you socialize a doberman to the point that he will be less effective as a guard dog? Can you socialize the dog too much? and then make him less protective?

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  8 років тому

      +rafael55 When I was certified for dog training I worked under two Schutzhund trainers, they raised German Shepherds for protection work and trialed their dogs internationally. What they stressed more than anything else is the importance of a well socialized protection dog. Improper socialization (a lack of exposure or over exposure) can result in a dog that exhibits unmanageable levels of fear-aggression or anxiety or that exhibits an inability to "work" in high stress scenarios. Focus at any age should be on proper socialization and relationship building. Once this foundation is set, your dog will know when they need to step up. - Alyssa Lapinel-CPDT-KA www.legendsdogtraining.com

    • @rafael55
      @rafael55 8 років тому

      +rafael55 The most important thing I do when I take my doberman to the park I that I first relax myself, because his anxiety can get to me by wanting him to calm down and relax. So, I sit on the grass and relax myself as best that I can, then after a while when my dog starts to relax we can go for a walk.

    Why have your dog on a leash with so many other dogs of leash? The fight or flight mode does not have a proper flight mode because of a restraining leash... hence the nervous reactions.

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  4 роки тому

      Linda Maria Pettersen hi Linda! This is something that I would rarely do with a dog, for the reasons you described. The reason i felt this could be helpful with Koda was because he was getting so worked up when greeting small dogs that he would begin barking and running circles madly around them. If/when the dogs started to bark or snap at him (asking him to back off), it only amplified his behavior. The hope here was that we could help him regulate his level of excitement, help him slow down so that he could better read the other dog’s behavior and body language. Thanks for your comment. Best, Alyssa Rose

      Sonja, there is no simple solution. Yelling "ow" frequently makes an already excited puppy even more excited. Poking your fingers into her mouth could create an aversive association with your hands. My suggestion is three fold: Number 1: If your puppy is free in the house while you are cooking dinner, talking on the phone, watching a movie or working at the computer - your puppy will likely try to get you to engage in "play" by nipping and biting. And it's very effective. Negative attention is still attention. Yelling, pushing, poking - even eye contact can unintentionally reinforce the behavior. If you are doing anything other than training, walking or playing with your puppy she should be in a safe, confined, puppy proof area (extra tall baby gates or crates for large breed puppies). Do not recommend isolating a puppy in a closed door room or outside. Number 2: Every interaction with your puppy is a learning/teaching opportunity. I use a puppy's breakfast, lunch and dinner to ...

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  8 років тому +3

      work on calming exercises. I sit down with puppies and their meal and reinforce the puppy for sitting or lying down on a training mat. This teaches the puppy to be calm while I'm kneeling in front of them, which generally triggers excitable behavior. It also sets a great foundation for moral formal obedience training in the future. Number 3: I set up structured train and play sessions that teaches the puppy to think through excitement. These types of train and play sessions will progressively build on your puppy's ability to control their naturally impulsive nature. If you want to learn about any of this in more detail - creating a puppy proof confinement area, calming exercises or structured play - we can always set up a phone or Skype consultation. I also offer Skype training sessions. My website is www.legendsdogtraining.com and you can fill out an assume that form for your pup. - Alyssa Lapinel, Certified Professional Dog Trainer

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  4 роки тому

      Hey! Thanks for watching. Kodi would go to Coronado and Fiesta (which is where this video was filmed), the problem is that he would start off "ok" and then become increasingly hyper-active as time went on. He would fixate on a small dog that was fearful of him, and he would begin barking non-stop. These situations escalated quickly. He didn't mean any harm, but the fact that he was so over-stimulated was preventing him from being able to respond to social cues to "back off." I would probably focus more on one-on-one social interactions with other dogs if I was training this dog today. Thanks for writing in. Best, Alyssa Rose

    Might just be me... Some of the comments seem incorrect... especially calling the Doberman nervous in certain situations. I'd replace it with excitement. Nervousness is associated with fear or anxiety and I don't see that in all those situations.

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  8 років тому +1

      +eldon1961 Hi! Thanks for watching my video and commenting. Koda's family had trouble socializing him with other dogs because he would become so hyper-excited in the presence of other dogs that he wasn't able to engage in healthy play. The problem was becoming worse. When off leash he would compulsively bark and run circles, fixating primarily on small dogs that were trying to tell him to back off. The owners had trouble interrupting this behavior when he was off leash, and he showed no ability to regulate his arousal without human intervention. He was completely well intentioned, but awkward. If anything, the very cues that should be telling Koda to calm down, were actually sending him into a frenzy. So you're right, he is excited, but if you look closer, his behavior and body language also indicate stress and uncertainty. He is excited, but he's also nervous. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Look at his response to the small black dog that approaches him at 3 minutes and 20 seconds. He does something similar at 3 minutes and 35 seconds when the two medium size dogs begin sniffing in the same general vicinity. There's nothing wrong with his choice to calmly move away, but it does reveal something interesting about Koda's baseline response to the presence of other dogs. Thanks again for taking the time to comment. - Alyssa Rose (Lapinel) - CPDT-KA

      No he's not. That's the stature of a Doberman. My girl is even thinner than him, and my veterinarian says her weight is perfect. Learn about the breed!

      +karenm8757 What?!!? Any skinnier than that and that dog will break from the wind. I've seen the breed standard and that dog barely looks like it's at 60!

      It's a puppy. Dobermans go thru so many gangly stages when they are growing up. Males more than females. Don't want any excess weight on them at those times. They fill out around 2 1/2 and 3 years.

    You're putting too much tension on the leash!!

      Samuel R Hey! thanks for watching my video. You are right in that 99% of the time there should be slack on the line, any tension should be momentary, particularly when interacting with other dogs. The problem is that this doberman had a Tarzan-like tendency. He was strong and fast and good natured but had absolutely no ability to respond to other dog's cues to calm down or back off. If Koda was off leash in this same environment he would go from 0-60 in less than a second and never come back down: when dogs barked or growled to tell him to back off he only became more excited. In this video, when you see the line is tight it is because he is surrounded by dogs, and if I give him more line I risk him going into beast mode and entangling all the dogs in the long line. A smarter way to improve social interaction with a dog like this is to create a more controlled training set up in a controlled training environment. This excursion was not an ideal training session, but provided an interesting way to observe Koda's behavior and pin-point why his social interactions always went awry. There were also opportunities here to provide guidance and help him to better regulate his excitement. Thanks again for watching and commenting. - Alyssa Lapinel, CPDT-KA

    I HATE CLICKERS!! This is NOT a good training tool! Dog's should be taught to heel on LEFT side.

      I don't understand the whole clicker thing either. I will never use a clicker. But why should heel be taught on the left side?

      Come to find out after some research, you can train a dog to heel on either side. There is a bit of a story behind the left side heel thing. It has something to do with your gun hand from long ago.

    • @AmerFalandoPortugues
      @AmerFalandoPortugues 9 років тому

      Well you can train a dog to do whatever you want. If heeling was meant to be on the right but you felt like training your dog to do it on the left for your preference then you can do that. I think there are some advantages to that...

      Ryan Hoel Hey! thanks for watching my video. Clickers can be useful tools for several different reasons. 1. Once it is "charged" it communicates to the dog that you like the behavior they are offering at that moment, and predicts reinforcement. Recommend using a 1:1 ratio. One click, one reward. You can do the same thing with a verbal marker like "yes" or "good" but people are less apt to pair it with salient reinforcement, therefore the words will never be as significant as a properly used clicker. 2. If it is initially used in low distraction, low stress training environments - and is used to teach and reinforce calm, focused behavior - it can later help the dog get into the same mind set even when training in higher distraction, higher stress environments. 3. It helps remind people to proactively look for the behavior that they like, and reinforce it.. David Schweikhart yes! to make a heel most practical I always have my clients train on both the right and the left. In real life scenarios it makes more sense to ask your dog to come away from distractions, and heel on the opposite side of your body. Distraction to the left, heel to the right. Distraction the right, heel to the left. It just makes sense. Thank you for both for watching and commenting, really appreciate it. Best, Alyssa Lapinel, CPDT-KA

      Hi, I have to look back at the video but I think the dog I’m working with in this video is at a good weight. He’s young and athletic and if I remember correctly his parents had a tough time getting him to eat more (it’s not as though they were withholding food). But again, in my opinion, he didn’t look to me like he was underweight. - Alyssa Rose
