Newest Film Stock is 3 ISO?

- ADOX's newest film stock coming this next season, is a whopping 3 iso. Aimed to be used for ghostly, long exposures, of empty cityscapes, ADOX is leaning into their niche film stocks with this one. In 2022 we saw them release their first color negative color, color mission, which I surprisingly ended enjoying quite a bit. This film, called Helios, is quite different than their first, more "normal" film though with it's 3 iso, and I'm worried that it may not have much use case for my type of photography. What do you think?

1:37 totally messed up about needing fast shutter speeds lol. A camera with MORE CONTROL ON LOW SHUTTER SPEEDS would be ideal. My brain was seemingly fried from scripting and filming, and somehow missed my mistake in the edit!
Oops. What you meant, was you could grab your Nikon 50mm 1.2 and have some fun with it in broad daylight.
I'm looking forward to it for my midday rural Texas landscapes
honestly, large format film would benefit so much to this 3iso film imo, it's always great to have new film, but if i see a scenario for this super low speed film, is in large format, for the method of shooting and all it fits much better and has a lot more use scenario compared to 35mm, where it's much more limited for just the sheer speed that shooting 35mm can be, same for medium format

@@gavinjenkins899No. You just cannot put an ND filter in front of an old brass lens with 100cm+ diameter. It may work for 4x5 shooters but definitely not for 8x10 or above.
@@gavinjenkins899 even if you can, getting a portra 400 on 8x10 sheets it's gonna cost definitively much much more compared to the adox film, i guess maybe a bit less for americans but still it will get a difference if their pricing will be more similar on both the continents, you can adapt other films, and there is a reason for it, but having the proper option it's always better than not having it either way
plus because large format doesn't have that many options for color large format, mostly for unique films, for what i know the 2 color film producers are Kodak and Cinestill (so in the end still kodak...) fuji i haven't heard any now for new stock of 4x5 or 8x10 film, so having a new unique look it's always better
I don't think Adox has the capabilities of manufacturing large format film. Correct me if I'm wrong
EDIT: Correcting myself - their announcement of this stock from January actually states that it's going to be available in 35mm _and large format._ Their 120 machines were the only thing that didn't work, apparently.
the thing with Adox is thats the best they can do currently with their coating line. Color mission wasn't produced by them and a lot of the know how was lost since then, so I guess they are trying to figure it out (as Harman is doing) and are selling their v1 as this film stock now to at least cover production cost :) Color film took 40 years to get to this level of quality as kodak and fuji is producing, so they are (almost) starting from scratch, so this is already looks promising :)
agreed, I don't want it to seem like it's not a good sign, but 3 iso just feels underwhelming initially, haha.
I think some over night images with this slow of a film could be amazing.
All these oddball/boutique/unique film stocks, is starting to make my accidental collection of film bodies (12 so far!) look more and more like a brilliant accident.
I agree with Adox that you could shoot this handheld under sunny conditions. Using the old trusty "sunny 16" rule, you should be at about 1/100 of a second at f/2.8 if you are in sunny conditions. It is limited and certainly not what you would choose if you were setting out for some street photography with no tripod, but on the margins, I agree that one could use it handheld.
I think it is also work in progress. Adox has made this film in their own factory. On their site they call it it: "Farbe für anfänger" Color for beginners. Not: film for beginners. Adox is the beginner.

That Adox 120 news is huge for me. I've been waiting ages for them to get their machines fixed; they'll have my money. I've been wanting to try their films out forever, but don't really shoot much 135.
Adox is awesome and underrated, CMS 20 II pro is simply unchallenged for what it is, having that resolution is insane for landscapes especially

@@metalfingersfilm It's without a doubt, bu far the highest resolution and sharpest film around, that's really something verg valuable they have provided for the community. I just wish it was a little more available but I get that it's a company trying to survive without the recognition they deserve. Their 120 machine is broken so you can't get the 120 anywhere, and the 135 and 4x5 film is sold out everywhere except for a shop I found in Berlin (I live in the Netherlands). I really really hope they will get some more attention and hype so that they can keep innovating.

This looks quite interesting to me. I do shoot a bit of pinhole with paper negatives so 3 ISO is not completely unfamiliar. But color pinhole is something I haven't done very much of and this film might be a good way into that. I'd really like to have this in 4x5 film TBH but will be keeping any eye out for its release in 35mm si I can buy some.

why would you need fast shutter speeds like 1/4000th of a second? seems to me like you're going to be wanting to get all the light in that you can.
At first I thought I heard wrong. At ISO of 3... wouldn't we be shooting slower and hoping to get an exposure? I think I will look for this film just to see what happens.
Yeah sorry; I meant lower shutter speeds; my brain was frazzled from filming all day, I think, haha.

Does this film have the standard orange backing? If yes, it could be interesting as an interneg for printing RA-4 from slides. True C-41 internegative films are no more available, and movie stocks are not really compatible with color papers.
This whole concept is absolutely insane to me.. guess that's why I'm left wanting to try it out! haha

I just checked my light meter and it goes down to 5 ISO..
Yeah you have to do manual adjustments beyond that. Or +2 exposure compensation if available

Try invercone or half a ping pong ball over selenium weston or possibly second meter. This might work. To accommodate 3 is. Maybe old German meter go down to 3 is. HOPE this helps.or just use a tripod and count the seconds verbally. Hope this helps.
I really wanna buy it to shoot flash at maximum strength in the middle of the day at like f5.6 or lower at 1/60 or 1/30 in the sun to see what would happen could be cool to use at like 8 or 4 handheld with flash in the daytime. It could make for some bizarre portraits
@@gavinjenkins899 Yes, but you can't shoot wide open with it (except for when you use an ND filter, obviously - but this is about special things a very slow film could inspire you to do, not about things that ONLY a very slow film can possibly do). Because otherwise the sunlight alone would blow everything out. The flash in this case would either be used in the same way, simply as a filler, or you use a really powerful one and try to even overpower the sunlight whilst using a wide open lens. Maybe that's what they meant with "bizarre portraits" because the first option wouldn't change much except for the shallow depth of field. Anyway,I don't think the second one would work due to the slow shutter speed that most film camera flashes require. You couldn't get the ambient light really dim enough.

Would be keen if it was in 120 film, I do quite a lot of long exposure stuff and can pop it in my spare film back for the Hasselblad so still have flexibility with higher speed films when needed. Couldn't justify putting this in my 35mm Rollei 35, as it would just render the camera a little useless besides tripod work, and I feel that medium format just does a much better job for long exposure work (and 36 long exposures would take me weeks/months to use!).
I think 3 is great. Hopefully a fine grain film. Would love to try some as 400 is fujicolor too blurry. May have been me getting used to twin shutter speed dials on my recent nikon S. If anyone knows how to work these thingamajigs would be greatful for any free help. The best film I ever used was 32asa pluss X b+w and ectachrome. I once heard Agfa good film.

2:05 I don't think a mission named "Helios" would ever go to the moon, being that Helios is the greek god of the Sun; that's where the name for the element Helium comes from, which is one of the byproducts of the Sun's fusion of Hydrogen fuel. Thus, I'd say the name is quite fitting since you'll need a lot of sunlight to use it lmao. Regardless, I think low ISO color film is interesting, not sure how often I'd use it, but long exposures without ND filters sounds nice.
in certain parts of historical Greece, Helios and Apollo were more or less the same god

I have to disagree on "they could make normal 400 ISO film". I think they can't. Color Mission is frozen stock manufactured years ago by/with a now gone partner company. They sell it to fund research on manufacturing color film on their own (hence the "mission"). That is an incredibly difficult task and I believe helios is the first sellable byproduct of this process. It hasn't been sold here in Germany yet afaik.
I always break the rules. I use film that is good for this or that and use on subjects not intended for. I use Ektar for landscapes but also for portraits. The reason I schoot film is for the unpredictability.
I'm not the person for that long exposure pictures, it's definetly a niche. But more film is always good, even if you don't use it yourself.

ISO 3 means this a rebranded an existing color duplicate film. I doubt this is a new film.
Well, I can tell you that they manufacture it themselves. It's not a respool. Did they buy someone else's recipe? No idea. I won't think so until someone provides evidence for it
Adox invested money it doesn't have to produce a C-41 film to shoot long exposures to blur out traffic in cityscapes? If you believe that, then you'll be pleased to know that Kodak is cutting all film prices in half next week. Same question re "why" can be applied to Harmon Phoenix film. I've been shooting film for 60 years, and I cannot recognize why these half finished or crap films are pouring into the market these days. These are not 30 year old master rolls pulled out of a freezer warehouse and dumping into retail to see if they can avoid the cost of hauling it to the dump. Someone spent real cash to get this crap into the stores or on-line retail. My only concern is that the economics of film photography is currently balanced in knife's edge. It does not need to be tarnished with newly interested users by selling them foolish, junk film like this just because it can be hyped by YT producers desperate for a new video subject. The responsible thing for these video makers to do when presented by these new crap films is to send them back and give them no play on YT.

ADOX said straight up that this film was just a first attempt to recreate color mission 1 after the company that they made mission 1 with went under, and was released solely because of the demand for color film being so high that mission 1 sold out 100x faster than they expected. It's not a finished film, it's basically a one off first prototype that will fund further research and development into finishing a real proper film stock. The next batch of film they sell will be different, and so will the one after that until the film is finished
