  • Overview and test of a very old, very loud Vulcan.
This smoke detector was designed by Chloride-Pyrotector Inc. and branded by the Vulcan division of U.S. Safety and Engineering Corporation. This is one of the original residential photoelectric smoke detector designs, and there's some arguments on whether Pyrotector or ESL was the first to invent the residential photoelectric smoke detector. To this day it is unknown who was first. The Vulcan Autosonic Mark SRO-4 smoke detector is a transformer-driven AC detector that features an incandescent bulb photo-beam sensor (which doubles as a power indicator and possibly a night light), two neon lamp indicators (one for power and one for alarm) and a Delta-Larm mechanical squealer horn. Very neat old smoke detector, made sometime in the mid-late 1960's.

The shell looks like solid brass. You can clean the oxidation up with a bit of brass polish and a rag. Use your elbow grease to really rub into it. I suggest putting some sort of clear coat on it after that because I have my great grandfather's solid brass United wall clock from 1959, and I have to polish it from time to time. I should think about putting clear coat on it.

Cool, I have a Vulcan smoke alarm that the battery is not made anymore, it is not hardwire, it still works with a 9V battery, so I can test it every now and then!

This is definitely made before 1972. Im going to say late 1960s but again maybe 1971 and it looks like very soon I will be the second owner of one of these. By the end of this month or early March I should have it as I won it yesterday. The one I am getting us untested but if it works at least I know what to expect sound wise and I do like this sound. Mine on the back the label is a bit ripped off towards the centre but that won't effect anything. The cover may need a cleaning as it is an very old item but still never the less I am very happy to be getting one as these don't pop up on ebay very often. :)

plus the second lamp got dim when you started to wave your hand to remove the smoke so i think the lamp tells you how much smoke was in the senser plus you can clean the sensor out because i saw screws holding it together

Apparently I'm not the only one who heard the huge similarity in the horn between this smoke detector and Seymour Smoke ! Maybe they got their sound sample from a Vulcan smoke detector

@@theshedproductions. I would say 1972 at the latest, It is older than me and I was born in 1973. I actually just recently purchased one on ebay. Mine needs a new bulb which I am hoping to purchase by this months end. looks like online is the only way to go. Mine doesn't make this high pitched beep but does a low buzzing hum which means trouble and the smaller lamp will light up so at least the unit works. Once I get the bulb things should work.

10:20 poor kitty finally jumped. like the First Alert SA76RS only about 20 times louder. What year is this from? I might have asked this before but I would have to say at least 1971 (two years before I was born) at the least by the looks of it. When was the first time the Delta alarm horn used in smoke detectors? Looks like a bell but sounds very different as you can see.

So I have a very similar detector in my house in fact it might even work at least the light is on. I'm not into detectors, but it's cool that at least one person is into saving nice examples so anyway if you're interested in it it's yours. Just let me know.
