Part comical, part sensical, and part Dadaistic. If you listen to Beck's early stuff, that which didn't make the radio, it's quite different from this, but he began working with modern genres and built from there. The funkiest white boy this side of hip hop and rap.
Certainly his breakthrough track, but I think "Where It's At" off his MUCH bigger album "Odelay" refined this vibe and became a bigger and much more timeless song.
At one point I had every one of his albums, I think sea changes was his masterpiece. Maybe not as innovative and eclectic as his other albums but there isn’t a bad song on it.
Such a great artist. His Morning Phase album, which won the Grammy for album of the year, is amazing and every song on his Colors album is a banger. The man is crazy talented.
@ViewsFromThe502 The blur effect at the start is to cover a storm trooper helmet he wears for a bit, had to be removed or face the wrath of Lucas Films. Now nearly 30 years later it would be Disney demanding it not be shown.
I just realized that the intro to the videos are him referencing the original Django with the coffin pulling via the chain-if you didn’t know, that’s why Tarantino called it Django Unchained.
His album Sea Change killed me - when I need to get mellow that is the one my husband and I put on. Guero is also a particular favorite of mine. Beck is just a genius in general.

Good "Victorious" reference... Heard of him, but don't know his songs. The guitar in beginning sounds like out West. Yes there were always the kids in the back sleeping. Most of my teachers wouldn't ask if he was okay they would say "get up". Philly = melted mozzarella. It is unconventional... Not a song i would seek out. Not very positive. But i get that is the point. He seems interesting and like he is pretty thoughtful in his lyrics.

ua-cam.com/video/eyCEexG9xjw/v-deo.htmlsi=cdu8WY0L9QS230SC I agree with Nick and Ty about the opening line, "In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey" being a great "hook" to pull in the listener, if the music hadn't already done so. It could be argued there's also a possible secondary meaning to the line as well. Nick makes a very good point about the main character's lack of evolution, but it seems like Beck and the other songwriter are simply trying to get across the idea that the subject in the song is simply different from all the majority of living things. So, it's a great use to make the line as accessible to as many listeners as possible. I recall when this video was starting to get played on MTV (around the days just before MTV became RTV for "Reality TV"). It was not uncommon for MTV to play some "unconventional" stuff, especially in the early days when they lacked videos to air. The above link is for a video along this same vein from 1982 called "Mexican Radio" by a group named Wall of Voodoo. Most of the time, these out of left field videos simply fell short musically and/or aesthetically. However, as soon as I heard the intro and first line of "Loser," I was wiling to buckle up and experience the seeming craziness going on in the video. It was a case, as the guys can appreciate, their own hometown Louisville legend Hunter S. Thompson's famous line, "By the ticket, take the ride." As a final note, Beck's musical abilities didn't emerge from a vacuum. His father is an extremely well-respected and longtime music arranger, composer, and conductor, working with serious heavyweight artists (from the past and present in several different genres, including his own son) and on many film scores over the years.

Fun fact: the melody in the chorus is the end of "Hey Jude"
I'll never forget when Kanye yanked the mic out of Taylor Swift's hand and ranted onstage about how Beyonce should have won the award instead of Beck.
That spanish in the song is so bad, that maybe most of spanish speakers (me for example) maybe thinked he was singing "Sooo, open the door"... 😂
