- Slayer’s co-founding guitarist Kerry King is one of the most instantly recognizable and well-respected musicians in thrash/punk/metal, and over the past near-40-years, has pioneered some of the most brutal and revolutionary music ever created.
King’s sound and vision manifest in the 13 songs on From Hell I Rise, the first solo outing in King’s four decades of slaying the metal universe.

I have no problem with this album being Slayer 2.0. It's a good start to a solo band career, and I'm interested in seeing where Kerry and co. go from here. Plus, I enjoy 21st century Slayer for the most part. I'm especially fond of "God Hates Us All" and "World Painted Blood" in particular.
I agree with the sentiment on those two records, but I'm partial to anything that Jeff Hanneman was a part of. Repentless was boring and this Kerry King record sounds even worse. It really crushes my blackened heart. Lol
Sick tour, Wraith rips. Loving the new Bat album as well.
My brother drew Slayer in the wet concrete in front of our house as a teen, it's still there.
hell yes they do, stoked to be taking them on tour 2 years in a row
This an unexpected, welcome surprise. Feel like DeKay will shoot straight 🔫 🎸
Great review. I was wondering how you would do it but you did not disappoint. I’ve loved Slayer since around the end of ‘86 & I’ve known em long enough to realise Kerry can be a bit of a dick. Maybe he should have used the last 5 years to reinvent himself instead of bitching about Slayer retiring cause this album is average at best.
Wraith is great
Hope you listened to that Sebastian Bach album by now. It's great.
I love this record. It's heavy and fast AF...brilliant!
LOOOOVE IT❤
This album just didn't do anything for me to be honest. I was stoked to hear it when it came out, and then I listened to it like twice and completely forgot about it. Nothing stood out to me.
I like this album
JJJEEEFFF HHAAANNEEMMMAAANNN!!!! Sigh.
I found Repentless to be a pretty good Slayer album. I had high hopes for this record by Kerry King. Unfortunately, this metal legend could not deliver on this album. I listened to it once and I don't think it deserves a second listen. It's really bad. I hate the fact that Mark is singing on this. First, he's awesome in Death Angel. DA is at the top of their game right now and Mark should put all his time and focus into DA. Secondly, he's only using one singing style on this album. The lack of variety makes the music sound boring and repetitive. He was the wrong choice for this record. Who knows, maybe this might be good for Death Angel in the end. I hope so, because DA deserves more success. They are one of my favorite thrash bands.
I think this album is as good or better than Repentless.
Anyone complaining about this sounding "too much" like Slayer, we no duh idiot, this was always going to be the case, and likely will still be the case, if there's another record
So basically they are musicians with no range? Sad.
I have the same issue as with Repentless: It's just boring. Nothing grabs my attention, there are no build ups and therefore no excitement. Everything I like about Slayer is gone here
The vox sound way too close to Tom. Lame!
I'm here to support Mr. King. If you're here to belittle his new band, just move on. Support the band you connect with and leave the negative b.s.
Kerry King is living his new life. NOT Slayer. He's doing his own band. Please stop COMPARING the two.
Tell that to Kerry 😂
meh.
Screaming vocals are for teenagers................not good
jóia, cara
You came to the wrong page boomer

Boring and repetitive. 3/5? Very generous. For me is a 1.5/5 not worth the repeat ...Osegueda either had a sore throat or i dunno wtf happened to his vocals...like , seriously, is he ok? Anyway, one of the worst albums of this year.
I'm excited for 200 Stab Wounds
I second that
@@IKMSful we WILL be covering this release.
I really wanted to like this album, but like Repentless, I found the album boring. Some variety would go a long way.
Yes! I agree 100%
Same. It’s like an album of filler Slayer songs that you listen to once then just skip passed on all consecutive listens
Ran thru the album a couple of times. Its not that great to me.
That Midnight show in Munich totally fucked! See them, I command you!!1!
I gave it a 2 out of 5. Very cookie cutter and basic in the literal sense. Most of the songs sound like 1st take ideas that Kerry would create and Jeff Hanneman would come in to make better. The only problem is, Jeff isn't here any longer to hash put these songs. I miss Jeff Hanneman terribly, and apparently so does Kerry King. The funniest thing is, Two fists sounds like Suicidal tendencies but is the most original song on the record. I feel like 3 or 4 songs on here could have been thrown away. Also, what's with the fucking AI art album cover???? Don't quit your day job Kerry.
Every time any of these come on liquidmetal i cant help but cringe. The lyrics are some of the worst ive heard in a while. Some of Slayers worst lyrics were the ones King wrote, this album solidifies that. Also the riffing is proof that Hanneman was the better riff writer.
Wow you are right. The lyrics for Crucifixation are...not good.
Kerry always had worse riffs/solos than Jeff and worse lyrics than Jeff or Tom.
Man you’re so spot on with Kerry writing terrible Slayer lyrics. I DID NOT enjoy this album to be honest.
I concur sir...glad Im not the only one thinking that🤘🤘
Bad lyrics? In metal?! Why I never!
@BANGERTV ALLMETAL, I like this Album. It's basically exactly the same as a Slayer Album just with a different vocalist. I could go for any song on this Album with the exception of Residue, sorry, there's just something about the vocal approach on that song that just nearly ruins rock for me. I'd say my top 2 favorite songs on here are probably 1. Idle Hands, and 2.Toxic. I think I'd give this either 3/5 skulls or 4/5 skulls at Max. I'd say it feels like a Repentless Part 2. So anybody who enjoys that one will probably enjoy this one.
You need to take at least 1/2 a point off for the horrible album cover
SLAAAAAAAAAAAAYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER
You are too generous. This is a one for me.
That album cover looks like it was ai generated
dullest album I've heard in years
Vocals sound amazing, and Bostaph definitely shines here and there, but for the rest... meh
As legendary as the dude is, I always felt that Kerry King was the weakest link in Slayer, musically speaking. Weakest riffs, weakest solos, and by far the weakest lyrics.
By a longshot. Funny because he’s the most pompous by a longshot too.
Thanks, Daniel.
I had a sense that despite the presence of a favoured vocalist, this would be more Slayer and therefore would bore me.
Fair, clear and well explained review. Good album, but not great. The best riffs always came from Hanneman, after all.
And the best riffs on this album are 2nd rate Hanneman ripoffs.
Doesn't sound too fresh to me, but I'm glad old man Kerry King is still doing his thing. It's gonna be hard to be constantly compared to Slayer, though, which was much more than Kerry
oh yeah, that album art sucks
Slayer sucks and not in the fun Primus sucks kinda way.
I'm a slayer fan til I die. I wanted to love this album but you nailed it. Every song sounded the same. I really miss the 80s 90s slayer. The album is good but it sounded like one long song.
Oh common, you're like my grandpa, "back in the days everything was better and the grass was greener...". You can't bring back the past. New album kicks ass
@michaelw4734 oh c'mon older slayer was just better. New album is good just every song sounds the same. You gotta hear it. There is not enough riff diversity .
The vocals are shite for me
Cash grab, snore fest.
the final verdict....meh. I will not bother spending any money on it.
I really like this album I bought it on Vinyl & cassette
Very fair review. Being that I’m 47 and a life long Slayer fan I can say that this is definitely a Slayer record. Nothing new but still a real crusher of an album.
Sounds more like a death angel album but with poor lyrics
It's not shit but it's far from the slayer hey day's
While I'm super happy that Kerry keeps recording and playing live, the line up is amazing here (Mark!!!), BUT - songs are mediocre at best, with just a few highlights. Anyway, it's Kerry, I still love this record. Oh production wise it is 11/10.
I've listened to the whole album and it's just forgettable. It's not bad by any means but it just sounds standard generic modern era Slayer. Even with Mark delivering incredible vocals it's just doesn't go beyond what we've heard before. Also the lyrics are very uninspired and tired.. We get it, you hate religion, you've been writing about it since fcking 1983
Sounds pretty catchy to me. Bad lyricsm, over the top guitar, similar song structures, repeated themes and tropes .....all check. What did you expect or want? I think I will be snapping my fingers as I stroll down a leafy lane with earbuds. One point off the box set for not including a disposable tattoo and cargo shorts
It's a fun record but I expected something different. I understand Kerry King being mad at the whole slayer thing but this band is between a nostalgia-act, a lack of creativity and not being smart to do something different.. It's weird and absurd to form a band that sounds just like the previous one.. I hope this is his way to move on, let's see if the next stuff is just another slayer 2.0 or if it's different..
Looking at the album cover, I thought you were reviewing new Deicide again...
I love Slayer. I’m glad Kerry King is back from retirement. But I thought this album is a little stale for me. And if anybody likes this album. Cool!
I want to check out BAT, but how am I supposed to find their record? Searchable names kids, it's all about searchable names.
i tried twice to get through the album but i coulden't do it, it's wayyyy too much like slayer and the songs are too repetitive for me
I 100% agree in most cases. I bet I didn’t like it anywhere close to as much as you. Personally I might not listen to any of this ever again. I’m going to go listen to some Necrot now.
the "fresh air" songs, as they are called here, do not belong and are one of the 4 or 5 songs that should be cut. This album is a bit much to listen in it's entirety without a break. I feel KK has a hard time throwing songs out and just wants to rework and record all he writes. If this album had the 9 best songs, it would have been a bit easier to digest.
This album and band makes way more sense than the Slayer "reunion" shows 🤷🏻♂️
Evildead? Take Offense? Why is this Chanel not doing a Great thrash ... 🤷🏻♀️😆
Should have called the album Repetitive very boring songs sound all the same
Anybody else keeps calling the new Slayer album? 😂
Yes as mentioned at the end, check out Wraith!
Show No Mercy is the best Slayer album.
SITA
One of their best I agree.
100%
That’s a funny way to spell “Seasons in the Abyss”.
Hell awaits
Always on point! Exciter 4ever! Wraith rules! See you at Reggie's! 🤘🏼
cheers!
Not a fan of the vox. The reason why death angel did not make it on top.kinda sound like metalcore.
Not even close to metalcore
One thing we can say for sure: Mark Osegueda has a killer voice,Thrash as hell!!
For it being Kerry Kings solo band album, there's so much good about this album.
Weak points I guess would be the vocals but overall the entire album is a good listen and feels like a natural progression from Slayer.
It's Thrash, heavy and sounds evil exactly where it needs to. No more needs to be said.
Yeah, man.....i took a cheech & chong break before jammin' out & this shit kicked MAJOR ass to me. MARK kinda Even Sounds A Bit Like TOM. this Definitely Sounds Like SLAYER so I'm Happy With It. 4.5/5
Truly enjoyed this review. Brutally honest...didn't try to hide your feelings with fake enjoyment. 10/10.
See you at Exciter!!! 🇨🇦🤘☠️🔥🍻
see you there!!!
The album was a bit predictable. The lyrics are cheesy but not in a good way, the riffs feel like they were shit out. I will say the vocals feel pretty Tom Araya-y. Solos are alright. But i just can’t get past the lyrics.
Also I feel like if this band wasn’t stacked up with All-Stars, it would probably be rated lower if even reviewed. I feel like the extra two “slayer show no mercy heads” were added because of who’s playing in the band. I respect these legends but this album isn’t for me unfortunately.
Rage is my favourite track 👍
I was hoping this would be a bit different. Kinda like DK said, it a bit too much Slayer, pt. 2. Don't get me wrong though, I like it enough. I'm a big fan of Mark, so I wish he sounded a bit more like himself here, but I still dig it in general. I'll give it a 3.5/5. Hopefully I'll see you on July 29th, DK. I think I'll be in town that day.
would be great to see ya!
FVVVVCCKING SLAAAAAYYYYYEEEEEEEERRRRR
Bring back Exciter to Brasília, Brazil, please. That show was awesome.
we'll be back next year
See you in Montreal, Dekay 🤘🔥

Why no HIGH ON FIRE REVIEW??? WTF
This album is mediocre at best
Just happy there's something new to hear
God hates us all sequel lol

This album slays
Solid 2/5
SLAAAAAAAAAAAAYEEEEEEEERRRRRRR! \m/
Check out New Pathology, Echoes of Misanthropy, Pain In Silence, Vile Revelation, Slamzilla, and Wounded Funeral.
Meh.
I don’t imagine KK feels the need to deviate from his usual pattern of songwriting, given that Slayer fans have been happily gobbling down the same uninspired slop for the last three decades.
Sounds like you couldn't get into the club so now you're Salty about it.
@@NiRvAnA6890You’re absolutely right; I applied to the Slayer fan club but was refused entry. Something about me not having bad enough body odour, or a low enough IQ to truly appreciate them.
@@SutekhTheDestroyer Well then, at least you know what key aspects to work on. Not everyone is born with it....
Piss poor use of comparing Idle Hands and Marks vocal delivery being like Tom's since it was originally recorded for Repentless and Mark DID COPY Tom's original vocal melodies for his vocals on it. It IS Slayer.
I dig Kerry's album 3.5 for me I honestly was not all that excited for it until the first single dropped. ...SLAYYEERRRRRRRRR
If the 90s metal kid in you was all on slayers nuts, you'll love this. It's actually good but, it sounds like new slayer album. Sounds good, if you love slayer. Not my favorite but, this is OK, as is slayer.
I wonder why king did not call on araya to sing, since osegueda sings like araya? Oh right, he had just told him to fuck off. Ah no, they reformed slayer and went on tour. But no new record, mind you. At least until someone puts up the right amount of money.
Slayer!!!!
I'm in the same boat. There were some real highlights on this record like "Crucifixation", Mark's vocal performance is vicious and Demmel's leads are on fire as always. Does the whole album melt my face off? ...No, but I think it's a good start to what King puts out next. I'm cautiously optimistic.
I've heard a few songs. Nothing about them made me want to listen to the album.
Hell Awaits is my favorite Slayer album, wished they could’ve kept that vibe.
I can understand that most people have no problems with a Slayer 2.0 but there is nothing new, it is the same as we heard from Slayer in the last 20 years, but it seems that they want a career based on nostalgia
Respect for that grade! Was afraid you were going to go all 'homer' on it. Because when i was listening to it, i was thinking: man, i haven't listened to "Divine Intervention" in a hot minute... and then i started listening to that instead.... Twice! Anyway- I hope this album is a gateway album for future Slayer fans
Much better than i thought beforehand. I like it, some very good tracks, some not memorable. Good effort!!
When ever LiquidMetal plays a song from this album, i enjoy it. But your right about it being forgettable because i can not remember a single riff or lyric from this one
Good review, Its funny that in small doses such as intercepted through out the review it all sounds killer, But when listened to as an album it all tends to blend. That said, I like it more then the last few Slayer records. Waiting to see if the songs build their own identify in my head from more listens, But I've played it through 20 or 30 times so far. Songs don't stick like they used to. Part of living a life.
The lyrics from Two Fists in that clip alone proved the rest of these comments right 😭 ultimate cringe
Sounds just like slayer...why not just keep doing slayer
Last Slayer records weren't as fast and aggresive as this. This is the new-old Slayer, which is good
