  • March 1st, 1971, John Richard Deacon became the fourth and final member of Queen, as history recounts it, not only because he was a brilliant bass player, but he was also quiet and didn’t try to upstage the others. John Deacon is very much the mystery man of the Queen story. Yes, he was the one who wrote tracks like "I Want To Break Free" and "Another One Bites The Dust".
The closest to him in the hand was of course Freddie.
FREDDIE MERCURY'S friendship with John Deacon was based on trust and support. There was so much more to it than that and John also proved his intense loyalty to Freddie. But his untimely death shook John and then things were never ever the same.
Join us today as we discuss the legendary bassist, John Deacon. Sit back and enjoy.
Here, we talk about tales of music that your school classes probably never covered. In here, you will find discussions about some of the world's greatest artists, stories about their personal life and the untold weird parts of their history!

Look as with all musicians out there when you replace a old member ( dead or alive ) you just can't get the same sound from another musician

His two colleagues in Queen did a good job over the last two decades by ruining the glorious image of the band in various ways. Musicals, movies, crappy singers to replace Freddie and so on. Queen has become a sad story. They all should've had the class to hang it up when Freddie died, a la Led Zeppelin. Sounds like Deaky did it right. He looks happy to me.
Having said that, I saw Queen live many times (starting with the Santa Monica Civic show in '75) and Freddie didn't use his famous vocal range live. He was very protective of his voice, and live performances suffered as a result. Hell, I could've sung his stuff live. Pathetic. Even their live L.P., Killer Queen, shows his obvious lack of range on stage.
Say what you want about Elton John, but before he developed polyps on his vocal cords, he sang all the high notes LIVE! Elton's '73 Hollywood Bowl concert performance was incredible, including all the high notes from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Some argue that, whilst Freddie, Taylor & May found success with side projects/solo work he did not and became increasingly disillusioned with the industry. Also, Mick Rock pointed to the Album Hot Space as it was a bit of a failure and Deacon was a driving force on it - it created a lot of tension between Taylor and Deacon because Taylor didn’t like the style and felt pushed out as a lot was based on drum machine work.
Mick Rock added that Taylor wrote a lot of the evocative stuff such as “these are the days of our lives” “Winters tale” and others. Even though “Winters Tale” was deliberately written to have minimal drums and highlight Deacon’s bass playing. Deacon was also regularly late to the studio after hot space, meaning he wasn’t joining in the collaborative side. When he made remarks about having kids to look after Taylor said “so do I but I’m never four hours late” Taylor was closest to Freddie as the worked on a market stall to keep money coming in and were very supportive of each other’s work.
Also, Deacon never sang a word, he mimed to make it look collaborative which was Taylor’s idea. Deacon didn’t want to do the celebration performance but Taylor organised it. Elton John noted that Deacon smashed his basses up after the show and was shocked by it. Deacon bought 50% of Spearmint Rhino and left the business.
During Freddie’s last months Taylor visited at Freddie’s request every two days which Deacon also resented- so he sorted the finances and said goodbye - May noted in 2018 he hadn’t spoken to Deacon since 2006 as Deacon refused to take calls.
It’s sad but due to Deacons temperament not a total surprise,

Marilyn Manson completely shaved off his eyebrows because Queen bassist John Deacon married a brown eyed woman instead of a blue eyed or green eyed woman. If John Deacon got married to a blue eyed or green eyed woman, Marilyn Manson would not have shaved off his eyebrows since John Deacon's wife's eye color heavily impacted the eye color that his children have. The reason that John Deacon's dark haired sons have brown eyes is because his wife, Veronica Tetzlaff has brown eyes. I really wished that John Deacon got married to a skinny 6'0" redhead woman with light blue eyes instead of a brown eyed woman so that all of his children would have blue or green eyes since John Deacon has green eyes. 😭😭😭

In 1976 I met Queen at an album signing in Boston. John was the only one who actually spoke to me. How ironic was that that the shy bassist chatted with this shy 17 y/o with braces and wearing a yellow rain slicker. It was pouring that day and I spent a few hours in line. No one could replace Deacy. Have never seen Queen without Freddie. I saw them 5 times in the 70’s. My love for bassists stems from John Deacon. Freddie was my first rockin’ roll love. Sting was my 2nd.

You're an idiot if you think Adam Lambert is trying to "fill Freddie's shoes" in the band. All sorts of bands go through "eras" and as long as the sound is there and not a direct copy, they do well. I saw them in 2017, and it's idiotic to describe him as "imitating". He sings the songs and does it his own way. Of course he keeps the melodies intact because without at least that, it's not their music. Period, end of story. He's even said in numerous interviews AND live that he's not Freddie and nobody ever will be. It's fun and people still deserve to see Queen live. No doubt Freddie would approve of him, and even John Deacon said that they still had his blessing to continue on. So what's your issue? That people still like them even with the vocalist change? No, he's not Freddie - nobody ever will be, and people who see them now still believe that. Nevertheless, they wrote an insane amount of music and to just let that live in the purgatory of studio recordings, they opted to find an amazing vocalist and go out again. Nothing wrong with that. Goddamn purists. Closed minded idiots, the lot of them.

I am sorry, I have to put something straight. Tim Staffell was a bass player BUT Tim was never in Queen. Tim played bass and sang in a group called Smile with Brian May and Roger Taylor who happened to have a big fan called Freddie Bulsara (who was indeed friends with Tim) who would attend their gigs! When Smile split, Freddie convinced Brian and Roger to keep playing with him singing. They started together but the band was not called Queen back then, they continued to call themselves Smile for a short while. So, back to bass players, the first bass player for 'Queen' was Mike Grose in the early to mid 1970s who was then replaced by Barry Mitchell who left in January 1971 to be replaced by John Deacon. By the way, John did not just 'have some skills' with electronics, he had a First-Class Honours Degree in it!

One of my great regrets was not seeing Queen live back in the late 70's. "You're My Best Friend", "Spread Your Wings", "Another One Bites the Dust" - just great songs. One of the things I love about Queen is that all four of them had at least one major hit single. I also appreciate his interest in electronics - he helped Brian May get that one of a kind guitar sound. His bass playing was always excellent and had just the right amount of flash when needed.

For my 14th birthday on April 20th 1985 my older brother took me to see Queen. Remarkably it turned out to be the very last concert they did in Australia (well until2014). The video is correct, they had a few barren years in the early 80s but came roaring back with the Works album. I told my schoolmates how amazing the concert was (still the best I have ever seen by any band) but they were dubious. 12 weeks later the Live Aid performance blew everyone away. Still sends chills up your spine. As for John Deacon it is simple. He doesn't owe anyone anything and should be left in peace. He has been a vital part of a staggering success.

John's work with Queen bordered on astounding sometimes, and his bass lines are very catchy without being too busy or over the top. I rate him up there with the greatest bassists of all times. He made that Fender P bass sound fantastic!
When I watched the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, I got the feeling from it that the other members of Queen looked down upon John and almost considered him some sort of bother that they just had to put up with.

I ask you... I got to listen to Queen and Free on the same night and at under a 100 euros for the best seat in the house.
