First thing I did on my 89 wrangler was a complete rear brake job. One of the wheel cylinders blue, so I opted to replace everything. I had all the necessary tools for working on my 65 Mustang in the past. The specialty pliers definitely come in handy.
I am a believer of doing one side and using the other as a reference. One time on a car my son bought the other side wasn't right. I recommend you always use a manual as well.
How can I diagnose my 89 YJ parking brake pedal? The rear cables rusted out and locked the drums. I bought all new cables and complete drum brake assembly parts but want make sure there’s nothing wrong with the pedal itself.
On that Jeep, what yr was that? Did you ever have to replace any wheel bearings on the rear of it? If so do you have a video on it? I'm looking for a video that has the older style rear drum brakes like my 93' Jeep Grand Cherokee doing the wheel bearings, etc...
I have 2004 Wrangler Sahara and was changing rear brakes and cylinder. When trying to disconnect the brake line the line was moving with the fitting. So the way to salve this simple problem was very simple after I figured what to do. Get a torch and heat the fitting. Do not heat it too much, just hot. Then put your wrench on it and it will turn like butter. Let me know...!
Hey man great video!! I'll be sweatin my ass off in sunny LA CA gettin em done. of course my break job might include a few beers since i ain't on camera. Thanks for the detail and great tips.
I have a 2001 jeep wrangler and having a problem with the rear brakes dragging on both sides. I've replaced the shoes and both wheel cylinders but still dragging. could it be a problem with the master cylinder
Just changed my rear axle on my 93 YJ and started doing everything but the adjuster cable is stretched or idk it won’t hold on the teeth. It will hold if i put some pressure on the cable. Any help plz ????
Questions what position the short shoe go in the paseger drive front or back and the driver side where the short shoe go on front or back 1999 jeep cherokee sport back brake
Yeah.. I know silly question. I am currently driving a 02 jeep wrangler with tires with some tread left. I have just changed the front brake pads but I wanted to know one thing. When brakes are applied, brakes on all four tires should activate? I am currently having an issue. When I try to come to a stop on wet road. My front two tires lock but I don't feel the rear engage. Might be the pads?
I just dont both rear brakes on my 95 jeep wrangler... replaced everything... in the kits I got two thin round washers and two u shaped washers .... looked for them when I took everything apart and I did not see them... what are they for and where do they go? thanks in advance for the reply
shots2 the u shaped ones are for the parking brake lever that has a small pin that goes in the hole and the u clip/washer goes under the lip of that pin
Hey Dave, worth mentioning to your viewers, that no oil and grease should be used anywhere near brake shoes, drums or callipers... cause oil and grease are not friends with the brake system....
Great video, always do my own stuff and it's nice to see tips and tricks from the veterans. Why did you have to adjust them, wouldn't pressing the brake adjust them?
+Patrick Thomson good question 😀 The brakes adjust only when going in reverse and hit the brakes. That pulls the cable which pulls up on the adjuster. It doesn't adjust going forward.
Can you please make a video that shows how to adjust the emergency brake. I have a 91 YJ and the darn thing doesn't hold in the slightest incline. Almost rolled over my kids cat!
ALL drum brakes are basically the same. Process is the same as well. The only thing he didn't show is how to re-mount the springs. Those things are tight and need to be put on correctly. A majorly important step completely overlooked.
Hi)) Very good kit of details for brakes repair! Where and how such set to buy? Who makes this kit? how this set is designated, I want to find such for my jeep? For the old Wrangler I buy spare parts on rockauto.com. p.s. forgive, English - not my language
Where did Burrhead (Will) get that nice English D tee shirt. Is he from Detroit? Will seems like s good kid. Good work Dave, teaching the kids is our future. Sorry about the Burrhead thing. HaHaHaHa. I like it. doug
Not one of your better videos. It would be helpful if you showed some of the tricks to get everything in place as they want to fall on the ground. Brake shoe springs, ebrake bracket etc
Nice work Dave l always enjoy watching you work on Jeeps

yeah its so much easier with new hardware eh ? Love the 65-68 stangs too :)
Great job! Fun narration!! And faster than a tick on a hound!

Thats poor water bottle escapeing the rain, also thanks!😅
so you went from everything off to everything on in one frame. you couldn't ask your budy to film that?

When i started, (before i found this), fell apart in my hands lol so i had no idea what went where for the most part lol

Geez I gotta do my 89 MJ rear brakes, actually just the park brake cables. NOT FUN STILL, I see my comment from 6 years ago...
Oh yeah, I heard that for sure. You made some good points for the young padawan. Nice job.
Thanks Wyatt

Man I hate servicing drum brakes. Discs FTW.
I love rear brakes - not .... hahahaha

Should all four brakes engage? I don't know if they should.
yea all four should engage... the front first rear second ... reason the nose dips when you hit the brakes

Hey buddy. That speedoline clear Can you store a bit that is mixed with the reducer for future use within a few days ?? Of course capped ??
nope - once activated you gotta get goin. You could extend the pot life a bit by refrigerating it but its gonna harden up ..... same as most clears
Up here the Honda dealer wants 300 per axle for brake pads and 540 per axle for pads and rotors. I kid you not!
holy crap does that include the vaseline ? LOL
I know right!
Hey Dave, worth mentioning to your viewers, that no oil and grease should be used anywhere near brake shoes, drums or callipers... cause oil and grease are not friends with the brake system....
True - you can use brake clean to spray down the shoes should any get on them also.
Well, at least I got the first like and possible comment! Great video Thanks for showing us how to/refresh our memories for DIY'ing
hahahaha awesome ! Thanks bro !

thank you so very much very helpful and informative video.
What year is this truck and is the 2002 Jeep Liberty the same process ?

You never showed us how to use the specialty tools. :-(
Great video, subscribed!
Will O'Reilly's loan the speciality tools you used?
Not usually as they are really pretty inexpensive to buy.
Ok! I’m ready to do this. 2000 TJ.

Step one. Goes from nothing to almost entire brake assy put together . Jeez thanks
"no, that's stupid." Hehehe
Tell him to cut his hair he'll be able to pass more of that heat without all that insulation
"Sweatin like four fat chicks in a Honda on the way to a Ricky Martin concert"
kinda skipped all the useful parts!
You just barely fit in the Cherokee, huh? LOL
What are you trying to say Trev ???? hahahaha
Drum brakes on these vehicles are problematic best long term solution is to convert to rear disk they makes kits for this
drums suck
They really do no doubt about it - lol
