There is “no problem that cannot be talked through”, Chinese President Xi Jinping told former Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou in Beijing on April 10, 2024. It was their first meeting since 2015, when they held historic talks in Singapore. This meeting is also the first between a serving or former leader of the self-ruled island and the top mainland leadership.

Taiwan's best bet is with China, some Taiwanese and HKer have overly romantic notions about Japan. The car industry of my country was guided by the Japanese since the 80s and by 2015, it was still stuck in the 90s technology. Then the Chinese came in 2016 and almost overnight it propelled us to the modern times. So Taiwanese and HKer should look beyond their immediate vicinity for a clearer picture. If somehow Taiwan got persuaded to confront China, taiwan's technological advancement will be stalled and overtaken by other players. Japan itself was stalled by USA and was stuck in the 2000, the evidence cannot be any clearer.

@@radixwp6789 I am not from hk or Taiwan so I can't meddle too much with their internal affairs, I can only offer some references so that people can have as big a perspective as possible. Democracy is not always a fail-save system as you can see the world is full of corrupt and malfunction democracy. On the other hand there are example of more rigid system like Singapore which is doing very well. The most important thing is for the system to produce quality people to run the show and the current leaders in Beijing are doing just that.

I fully support the reunification agenda. The only thing hinder them for doing so are just political ideology which I, optimistically, believe that It could be discussed further. The key is, they need to take the first step together. This will create a stronger, unified and solid China which will bring prosperity to Asia.
For the prosperity of Asia, they should remain separate. Or unify without CCP. Taiwan is much wealthier and more developed than China in every way, and it is that way because of Taiwanese politics. Why would Taiwan want to unite with a country with zero freedom? If the CCP let go of power, and introduced free and fair elections, perhaps there would be a chance. Only that will never happen.
