It's worth adding some context. The text, which is a poem by Maria Konopnicka was written in 1908 when Poland officially didn't exist. During that time Poland was divided between Germany, Austria and Russia and both Germany and Russia persecuted Poles including destruction of Polish language and culture and children were forced to be taught German and Russian and learning Polish was forbidden. This is why there are those references to Germany.
It's a classic Polish patriotic piece, it was considered to be made into the Polish anthem but didn't become one. Obviously today it wouldn't make much sense as we no longer live in that situation and if we wanted to look at this purely from a historic standpoint, then the poem simply doesn't encompass other events that happened earlier, at that time and later, nothing about persecution by Russia for example. Still, it was a really important poem and then song.

The lyrics of this anthem were written by a famous, known by everyone in Poland, writer, poet, novelist Maria Konopnicka. And music was composed by a Polish composer, conductor, concert organist Feliks Nowowiejski. It was publicly performed for the first time during a patriotic demonstation in Cracow in 1910, held to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Polish victory over the Teutonic Knights (being mostly of German origin) in the Battle of Grunwald (1410). It's a very important song, or rather anthem, for the Polish nation, in context of its history.

Rota was written in 19th century when Poland was partitioned between Germany, Russia and Austria. Germany and Russia oultawed Polish language and culture. Viewers and listeners should know the origins of this song.
Maria Konopnicka wrote the text of "Rota" in 1908, as her reaction to the German persecution of Polishness and Poles living in Wielkopolska, the cradle of Polish statehood. The German exploits were sharply criticized throughout the civilized world.
Polish composer and musician Feliks Nowowiejski composed the music in 1910 and then (July 15, 1910, in Krakow, during the unveiling of the Grunwald Monument) the song was performed in public for the first time.
Later, in free Poland, there were plans to make "Rota" the Polish anthem, but ultimately (to this day) the anthem is "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego".
    Warmest regards

      @publicminx 2 місяці тому +1

but one should also keep in mind that before and after the war most countries did exactly the same, enforcing the national standard language on the entire population. Poland did that as well (it changed later in the 1990ties due to EU Regulations about minority languages). One can still today hear different groups complaining in Spain, UK, France and so on that most regional languages of all kind got homogenized by Standard Language. It was just a raising thing, especially since the revolutions in Europe with more and more national organizations ...

It gets even more powerful when you realize that it's not just a song. "Rota" means "Oath". And that what it is. Initially written as a poem, nowdays sang on official occasions where people (soldiers, scouts, students)... not only sing a patriotic song. They declare that they will not forsake our fathers land etc. That's why the lyrics are like that. Now, restart and read the lyrics like it was not a song but an oath, makes much more sense.

Rota just makes you feel the pride, the anger and the sadness of previous generations. The Polish nation and language were very close to being wiped out from the world. The reason why it can't become an official Polish anthem is that it mentions Germans as our only enemy, while it should include all nations that were or could be a threat to us(that it doesn't matter, who they are, if they're attacking, we will fight them). Mazurek Dąbrowskiego is more encouraging to be patriotic and protect our lands and culture, by mentioning the times we were still in possession of other countries.

There's a new/old version from 1904 with Teutons instead of Germans ( spitting), Konopnicka decided to change it to "Germans" ( did she see Faulty Towers before everyone else?) and this was the version we have been taught by our grandparents and at schools. But recently this has been changed back to Teutons. To please the Germans, I should imagine😅

I had to recite it in front of my class and use my own interpretation in terms of the style when I was in school. I think every Pole knows Rota.

If You want to know how I feel about Rota: I'm a grown man, soon 27. I am always trying to control my emotions, some say I'm sometimes cold, almost psychopathic/apathic (I do not know which psychis state is for low emotions - sorry. Im sure You know what i mean). I have seen suffering and terrible incurable diseases. This is the only thing in the world that breaks me up every time. Literally every time. Whenever I think of it, or it accidently shows up somewhere, I start crying. Its not loud sobbing ofc, but rather quiet tear stuck under my eye, that keeps getting bigger and bigger until I wipe it. For as long as it focus on this song I'm digging deeper and deeper into the darkness. It overwhelms me for some time, but at around half of the song I no longer feel trapped by sadness. I become filled with happiness. This joy comes form understanding the huge honor, blessing and duty which are connected to my past and heritage. This makes me inspired. I gain strength, focus and motivation for next 2 months. This feeling, this memory of the past drives me and makes me so focused on giving not 100, not 101 but 201%. Thanks to this song I know that, just as my parents, grandparents, and their ancestors generations I can make a difference. They did it. Not few doznes heros. Milions of them. People who share such amazing values: God, honor, fatherland... This is my song. This is my anthem.

We have been occupied for centuries but we do not surrender, if not the Germans, then the Russians and so on alternately, but our determination and fighting spirit always gives us strength against the enemy of the Polish nation. We are not cowards, those who betrayed us in 1939 and earlier years. We were on all fronts, we fought for the freedom of every nation in Europe, but they did not fight for our freedom, we regained it thanks to the determination and strength of the fighting spirit and the blood that was shed.

Maria Konopnicka wrote the words. She died in 1910. But the German question is an old one in Poland, even older than the Teutonic knights.

keep in mind that almost all countries/kingdoms did that before and after the world wars. thats why people in france complain about how france killed all other language or in UK or in Spain or in Germany or in Poland or in most other countries. that was just a thing which raised since the different revolutions in europe and also the urge to standardize the languages (which is why you also had often older people talking about how they lost the dialects because using them was forbidden or looked down). it was actually an entire period in many parts of the world which in europe then later slowly changed to the protection if minority languages etc. ... due to the different ethnic/nationalist/ideological uprisings all over europe back in time there was also general the idea to get rid of problems by assimilating them to the own culture. one can also see that today with russia: most bordering countries have the problem that as long their russian minorities speak russia that this could give Russia a reason to invade (was also one 'excuse' to invade the ukraine). now you have some kind of tricky question. are you tolerant and with open eyes support a potential russian threat or not with other pros/cons? history/politics is often a bit more complicated and back then in much more polarized/heated times (and not so much an information age like now) even more.

ua-cam.com/video/yZPR-mxtnMo/v-deo.html The inspiration for writing the song "Let's Defend Poland it is Our Home" is the quote:
"Freedom is not for ever, you have to fight for it"
How difficult it was for Poles to regain independence!
and now that we have it, we have to continue fighting for it so as not to lose it.

The words of this song, perhaps the most patriotic, powerful and pathetic Polish song of modern times, were written by a woman - strong, brave, independent, mother of several children, who later became involved with a woman, and who is still underestimated in her own homeland as a second-rate poet, the author of simple poems committed to on social issues and texts for children.

Rota jest świetną pożywką w tych czasach dla nacjonalistów którzy wszędzie widzą wrogów. O historii należy pamiętać ale nie rozpamiętywać. Patrz w przyszłość pamiętając o przeszłości
