Fire devastates 16th century London pub

- A heritage-listed London pub thought to date back to around the 16th century has been damaged in a fire.
The blaze on Friday night damaged three floors and destroyed the roof of the grade II-listed Burn Bullock in Mitcham, south-west London, that was reportedly visited by a British king.
King George IV "briefly frequented" the institution that was a meeting place during the Napoleonic Wars, according to Merton Council's local heritage service.
The left wing of the three-storey property dates between the 16th and 17th century and the front between the early and mid-18th century, according to Historic England's official list entry.
Historic England has listed the Burn Bullock on its Heritage at Risk Register which states it was in "very bad" condition and "had been illegally occupied as a House in Multiple Occupation and has suffered associated deterioration".
Julia Gault, secretary of Mitcham Cricket Club which is across the car park from the pub, said the property had been occupied by squatters for a decade.
She said: "We've been sitting next door to what has been going on since 2009 - watching a listed building fall into a greater state of dilapidation.
"Since it closed in 2014 it has been occupied by various collections of people who have been reported locally as squatters."
An "unauthorised car sales business" has been operating from the rear car park, she claimed, adding "there were more cars than I had seen there in ages" when she drove past on Friday evening before the fire broke out.
Coming soon to the site of a former pub, a selection of overpriced flats
That was the whole plan!
Or tax payer paid accommodation for criminals
Your sadly spot on
Thats exactly what happens where I live!
Planning permission denied - 3 months later, a fire decimates another beautiful building.
Migrant hotel
destroying british heritage for insurance money. class act
And who pray tell is getting said insurance money? The squatters?
I`m starting to wonder if there is not something more sinister at play here, this is not the first historic building to go down in flames and they are trying to eradicate British culture, just saying, it`s worth keep an eye on this!
There seems to be an awful lot of pubs mysteriously being damaged one way or another, and they are all of great historical interest too. Very Sad. 😢
They are empty.
Never used to see a dead pub.
@@julianshepherd2038 This one was empty since 2013, and no one gave a frick.
And churches
nothing to do with insurance. it's the demolition of british culture and way of life.
The owner is Muslim and has been turned down to develop the site into a hotel countless times by LBM so it’s no surprise the pub was torched this is common knowledge amongst locals, the owner also owns the pub the White Hart which is directly opposite the Burn Bullock so watch this space when that goes up too !
pointless and wasteful to give properties to these people as wasn't in use and was derelict...
I used to drink in both those pubs in the seventies when london was still civilised...why are muslims owning pubs I thought alcohol was HARAM to muslims
I've just won a fiver on what religion the owner would be

Why are these fires so common in European cities now? I feel there has to be a connection rather than purely an accidental cause
Insurance?
This pub was derelict and deteriorated for a while now (same with a pub/restaurant on the other side of the road). It wouldn't be surprising if it turned out that some squatters caused a fire.
1 of our local pubs is now a mosque.
@@lizglaisher895 Where’s that?
@@lizglaisher895 Does that mean ‘Islam’ is going around setting fire to derelict pubs in the backwoods? For what purpose?

Ballymore and L&Q 30 story unaffordable poor quality apartments coming soon
funny how pubs just always seem to catch fire when they close?
This one was closed since 2013 and I'm pretty sure there were squatters in there as well.
Ghosts no doubt😂
@@ShadiC636 Squatters can involve long and costly legal battles to remove.. A match and some petrol cosdts very little in comparison. Wont be the first or last building with squatters to mysteriously go on fire. To many rights to squatters and few to owners and developers..
These fires usually always start in the roof, for get the roof off and let the weather in, is a kind of slow demolition, and perfectly legal. It’s happening all over the country where planning permission is refused.
It's happened all over Hull , as long as I can remember any building the council want rid of
To much old crap on decent land, out with the old in with the new, 😂.
@gooderspitman8052 How is arson legal?
@@user-yo3mn2ro6w Fwit.
@@robbpatterson6796 I never said arson was legal, but letting the weather in with no legal obligations to repair the roof is, was my point. My local town has lost numerous buildings via this kind of grift.
I grew up playing on this cricket pitch in the middle of the road. That pitch is the oldest cricket green in the world and the pub is a huge part of the history. How sad.
Given the state that pub was, this was bound to happen sooner or later. Obviously I'm not justifying it happening, but for 11 years since its abandonment, no one seemed to care for it and it was allowed to deteriorate to this point.
@ShadiC636 oh wow, I wasn't aware it had been abandoned, I've long since moved away. Sounds like a shame all round.
@@DdotRay86 Yeah and the other pub/restaurant opposite of it is in no better shape 😞

Weren't the owners of the Crooked House ordered to rebuild it as it was before the 'mysterious' fire?
Loads of protected buildings catching fire randomly now. Wonder if it was sold not long ago like all the others?

Spontaneous combustion is so prevalent, yet never happens once the new build has been built. One of lifes strange phenomenons i guess.
Being told to rebuild it to the same standards is another one, they never have to.🤔🤔🤔
hats off to the homeless for managing the property for over a decade.
This is tragic! I assume ‘illegally occupied’ means SQUATTERS! Yet another historical building attacked! 😔😔
Get a life mate
It is a commercial building so squatting it is a civil matter so until the squatters refuse to be evicted, after an eviction notice is granted, they are not breaking the law.
They are still pond life, a bit like yourself suggesting just because something is legal, it is moral @julianshepherd2038
I wonder if anyone at the Torygraph has started noticing yet...

Look what happened to Andrew Bridgen, he's still fighting to be heard, they can't even be bothered to turn up to debate excess deaths.
Another piece of London lost. No doubt a shrewd property developer can now build on the site.
Another developer wanting to get their mits on the land? I’d put money on it.
I smell a conspiracy & foul play.
Should have got the squatters out and renovated it has a community centre. Maybe Sadiq Khan would like to pay for it to be rebuilt due to him not enforcing the law with the police force.
Squatting a commercial building is not a criminal offence, it is a Civil Law matter.
Also
The Mayor does not interfere in operational matters.
A good suggestion, but I think the solution is more illegal boat migrants.

Here we go again.
This is by design!
We lived so closeby (caesars walk).this pub was my parents and our neighbours regular local pub...sad to see it burning down
This will be VERY EXPENSIVE to repair. 'Grade 2 listed' means any alterations or repairs have to be done the SAME way as when built! Think on that. lime Plaster and horse hair-try finding that and a plasterer able to do it. Lathes for the wall plastering, Rafters/floor supporting timber will be very thick, unlike today. Try finding them. Sash windows and what of the glass? Original window fixings and locks, Same door handles, locks, finger plates and kick plates. What was the floor, block herringbone wood blocks, Timber, was it oak or mahogany? Original floor & wall tiles and where to find the original the roof tiles -this list is endless. Would not want to be the owner of this pub. It will cost a small fortune.
It obviously will never get done!
Unlucky for whoever torched that pub, because it looks like only the roof and the top floor that got damaged in the fire, so the pub may be able to be restored.
That totally-demolished "crooked house" pub is also going to be "completely restored".
@@None-zc5vg I'm offering 5/2 against that happening...
Let’s hope so why aren’t the police investigating the fire
Driven and been driven past this pub for 20+ years going from Croydon to SW London where my old man lived, been empty for ages I think ( out of London now, don't know )
Shame to see it go out this way, no doubt some poncy flats incoming.
This reflects our society now foreign people eyesores illegal business practices and everyone just watches and says oh dear we are being replaced and i think we can only blame ourselves
In what sense were the residents "squatters," if this pub building belonged to the owner of the pub across the road? At the least, they must have been "tolerated" by him, if his efforts had been devoted for years to getting planning permission for change of use and not to to removing them.

It's mostly true so don't even troll me..
Sorry for your loss of the pub ☹️☹️☹️
I can't believe the name of that pub considering what has happened, it's seems it was meant to be.
There are empty pubs all over the country. They have been closing for decades. People just don't go to pubs any more, so it's futile for councils to insist the buildings continue to be used as such. Before that it was cinemas that were closing - a few managed to stagger on as bingo parlours but most are shut down and are difficult to re-use for another purpose. The councils never insisted that the old inner city cowsheds and stables had to remain in use for animals though that was the "heritage."
Exactly 💯 right. Same like red telephone boxes and sooner or later the black cabs!!
Oh no! Now they'll need to knock the rest of it down - I guess they'll be able to build some 'luxury apartments' in its place now...
prime location
The pub has been shut down for about 10 years unfortunately and had squatters in and out ever since and has over all just looked really run down and abandoned. The squatters were only finally removed a few days ago, thankfully no one has been hurt as far as I’m aware. Everyone in Mitcham screams this is an insurance payout and I too wouldn’t be surprised. Just glad no one is hurt in the process.
Drip,Drip,Drip goes the history erasing tap...😬
The insurance company should refuse the payout.
Amazing how many of these listed buildings or just pubs, spontaneously combust when planning permission has been refused. Buy a listed building on a prime site . Planning application refused. No problem with { Hey Presto pub matches}.
When I was a lad the pub was called the Kings Head.. a lovely place that served excellent food and opposite the famous cricket green…
I smell a rat called arson and insurance claim. This pub has been semi-derelict and squatted in until recently when it was boarded up.
Not another pub fire
This is how modern developers get around grade listings.
