I have the same rifle as his other one, in .458 Lott, mine with a laminated stock. I’d love to have one in .375 H-H. A much more reasonable versatile caliber for North American use. I still love the Lott for pure stomping power!
375 has taken more game globally than all the other safari calibers combined. It's equally at home in North America as it is in the African plains. I didn't think moose counted in the same category. I know people who have taken moose with crossbows. I sure as heck wouldn't try for any of the others on that list with a crossbow. That said, the performance here on 375 was impressive and if it's fit for purpose and just enough, that's the perfect place to be. Exactly enough and nothing more.
Sir, you are absolutely correct! I owned a 458 Winchester Magnum, a 416 Rigby, a 338 Winchester Magnum, and a 375 H&H. The 375 was the crown prince in the safe. It was chambered in a Winchester model 70 Synthetic. Extremely accurate and the recoil was comfortable.

Hi, Scott, I would call that 375 H&H a "Civilized Beast", more modest recoil, less expensive to shoot and not as violent down range as the 700 Nitro, but the 5 round magazine give one a lot more total fire power in a defense situation. A huge advantage of a double rifle is the FAST second shot. If being charged by a wounded, angry animal, there's no time for a bolt or even a semiauto to cycle. There's also the risk of a stoppage. In some countries, and for certain game (like cape buffalo), double rifles are the only guns recommended.

The 375 H&H is a sweet round. Got to shoot one a few years ago, recoil wasn’t bad and it was very accurate. So in my limited elephant gun experience I’ll have to go with the 375. Thanks for the video!
Although .375 h&h mag is a somewhat tame big or dangerous game round, one of the most famous elephant hunters in the world, Walter Dalrymple Maitland Bell, used a 7mm Mauser to hunt his elephants. He was a proponent of accurate shot placement with smaller bore rifles, whereas most of his contemporaries used big bore rifles. He would often shoot them from an extremely difficult shot placement, diagonally from the rear. He often only used one shot to take them down, and the shot was coined the " Bell shot". He discected the skulls of elephants to learn the best and most humane way to hunt them. As well as being one of the most successful ivory hunters to ever do it, he was also a soldier, writer, painter, explorer, and one of the first aviators ever, as well as one of the first to fly and shoot down another aircraft! He hunted with the whose who of the times. He was a Scottish native, and died in the fifties. He fought in the boer wars, as well as the first world war. 7mm Mauser was the biggest rifle he used for the majority of his life, with all other game being shot with a .220 Savage hi power or a 6.5 Mannlicher. Towards his later years he used a .316 Rigby tuned Westley Richards, but abandoned it's use after he had a batch of ammo fail him. He used the remaining ammo to shoot birds on the fly, then never touched the weapon again. He was reputed to be the best shot in the world, and used to carry a Mauser c96 chambered in 9mm, with a shoulder stock holster, against human attackers in Africa, and killed a man at over six hundred yards with it, after they shot at him with a rifle. His exploits are legendary, as well as numerous. He went through 24 pairs of boots every year, and walked an average of 76 miles for every elephant he killed, of which he shot 1011, with only 24 of them being female. He hunted over 880 cape Buffalo, and used a Savage .220 high power for almost all of them.

Scott: Once again it would be really interesting to do your penetration tests using the oak boards like the ones you have used in past tests, to compare the .375, .500 and.700 Nitro FMJ's! As I think I have mentioned before, if you stack them back to back, or in bundles of 5 -10 boards with little to no spacing I believe that they will be less inclined to tumble or deviate from a straight path. @Nathaniel Shrock Not sure what OP is referring to... but that was no typo! It will take a whole lot more pine boards than oak to stop these rounds as Scott has found out in previous tests and he (as well as some other channels) are about to find out that these calibers will, in general...track straighter and give more consistent penetration paths through the various targets than even the .50 BMG, due primarily to nose profile and bullet construction. This is assuming that Scott finds such a test to be something worth doing... but these tests would give some idea as to how these somewhat rare (.500 Nitro) and very rare (.700 Nitro) rifles compare to the more common calibers, if you can call the .375 et al., common! Just for the record I have tested and done load development for essentially all of the elephant gun calibers from the .600 Nitro Express on down...as well as dozens of tests with a wide variety of .50 BMG handloads using a plethora of projectile types in all kinds of targets at both standard and extremely high pressure levels. and have been doing this since the early 1960"s... ballistics is what I am most curious about. I am just trying to give back some guidance based on my experience... which by the way, does not include a .700 Nitro! It would be quite interesting to find out how the heck Scott managed to come up with one of these, who made it and how much they cost (we already know how much they cost to feed)? Again, this comment is absolutely NOT about bragging... it's about sharing information that may hopefully be helpful, based on real world experience. Lastly, the comments that I was directing my response to were right about the use of pine boards in earlier days for penetration tests, but those were generally used for the testing of handguns apart from even earlier tests by the military. That H&H rifle is a beauty, not too long ago that caliber was really a thumper in the minds of lots of shooters. Nowadays bigger bores seem to be the new choices, but considering when it was developed, well over a hundred years ago, the old girl still commands a lot of respect. Great video Scott, I'm sorry you didn't have any fun shooting it! LOL. I've shot its' little brother for almost fifty years, (300 H&H) and love it.
That gun has a moderate velocity with heavy slugs and the most longevity among hunting rifles or the Mega version of 30.06 compared to high velocity RUM or Wby were maintaining is a issue.
It was crazy seeing the bullet shrapnel glisten in the light for a split second after hitting the target. Really shows how even shrapnel acts as miniature bullets, and shows why you need to stay back so far.
The beauty of the 375 is that with a 300 Sierra BT soft point it has the same trajectory as a 30-06 with 180's .....so you can reach out and touch things without the rainbow you get with the big heavies.

Almost the smallest. The smallest smallest would be the 9.3x62. it's the minimum legal caliber for elephant (in some places), though most don't allow it. Great video though 👍

I shot a light .458 Win that a guy was building (Mauser action) a while back. Looking at it overall, you'd have never guessed it was a dangerous game rifle. I relaxed too much on the second round and the low power scope conked me. It had some recoil.
@Nathaniel Shrock I did that too but I got scope bite. Busted my head open and was bleeding. I didn't stop shooting though. It was just a flesh wound and now it's a scar of an old battle wound, lmao. That's what I get for holding it loosely in the winter with a winter coat on and a scope with only 2.5" or so of eye relief.
Holland & Holland sure knew what they were doing almost 110 years ago! The .500 & .700 are great, but I bet they are based off of black powder cartridges. Not that there is anything wrong with that. But the belted .375 H&H is my favorite! Probably because I own a Ruger #1 in it! Keep up the great work!
The 700 NE was developed using 1000gr bullet and 160gr smokeless powder. The only reason was, H&H had assured a client they would not produce another 600NE after he bought his, guaranteeing its value as the last. Another client wanted one, H&H would not go back on their word, so he said, then make me a 700NE and they laughed at the ridiculous idea. But eventually agreed, but the client had to shoulder all the cartridge and load development along with associated costs.

That's a tiny caliber for you! I've seen this used on brown bears as well as dangerous game in Africa. It puts the big bears down with authority. As with anything proper bullet placement is paramount. Love all your videos, Scott, HAPPY THANKS GIVING to you and your family.
I loved the cheese in slow motion. It reminded me of some gallon paint cans I shot years ago. I shot them with a .270 and it was still amazing how high the paint flew as the cans themselves folded inside out.
I love my old 375H&H... being from Zimbabwe it comes in handy at times... beautiful cartridge, low recoil, suitable for most African game from the smallest to the biggest & very good penetration - once had a lengthwise shoot through on a bull hippo (on land). Try solids on your steel plate...

I fired a 375H&H. Up until that point, I thought my shoulder would never be the same after firing a 303 Brit. All the 50 BMG's that I've fired since still don't compare to that.
Is .303 British really that bad? The largest I've shot is 7.62x54r, which seems to have more energy than .303 British. 7.62x54r kind of hurt but it was manageable and easy to get use to.
@@thesituation5315 303 Brit is not bad at all, I own a Lee Enfield and the recoil is nothing really, maybe if someone is not used to the brass butt pad perhaps, but in my opinion it is a fine vintage calibre
Even though it's a smaller round my don't it hit hard it must be really moving at some speed, im amazed how far those slim balls expand before exploding it completely distroyed the water jugs and that nacho cheese was spectacular
375 H&H is one of the best penetrating calibers. Definitely one of the favourite calibers here in Africa, I have carried one for backup in Big 5 country and faced off numerous charges. God bless

That was W.D.M aka "Karamojo" Bell that used the 7mm Mauser on Elephant. He took 1011 Elephant and about 800 with the 7mm Mauser using a 172gr round nose solid.

I have to say it is a tie between the .500 and .700 rifles, it's just something about those double barrels that really appeals to me :-) Also if Scott wanted to shock his viewers he would make a video with several tables that are not destroyed, at this point the tables are just another target.
Fun fact, all belted magnums are derived from .375 Holland & Holland as a parent case. The belt was utilized for proper headspacing as the original rounds were tapered for easier extraction in adverse conditions. .458 Lott is just blown out to .458, the winchester belted magnums are all trimmed and renecked.
Honestly, this one surprised me with how MUCH energy transferred into your targets. Like, the .700NE makes things blow up really well, but this almost does it just as good, and it's literally, barely larger than half the size.
I think the smallest would really be the 6.5x55. It's been used on elephants for a long time with round nose full metal jackets very successfully, but is now illegal in most countries. Here in the states people would argue that it's too light for whitetail lol

First you can't go wrong with any thing CZ makes, they just do it right. Second the .375 H&H is a grand old cartridge ]1912] . It is in my opinion the most accurate of the big bores and will shoot different weight bullets to the same point of impact. I had one of mine reamed to .375 Weatherby. You gain 200 to 300 feet per second and can use either round.But when you fire a standard .375 in the Weatherby chamber it comes out Weatherby.

I’m not a big bore kinda guy. 300 win mag or 7mm ultra mag is about as big as I can shoot over and over comfortably. But as always, love what you and your pops do.
In the 80s Lived and worked in Ethiopia. I legally shot a Hippo from 30 mt with my BRNO ZKK602 in 375hh. The 300gr solid. The bullet went through the left shoulder, across the chest and ended just under the skin on the other side. The hippo dropped on the spot.

Karamojo Bell shot many elephants with the same round I used to use for smaller deer, a 6.5 x 54 Mannlicher, with a 160gr round nose. This was at the beginning of the last century. He said that placement was the secret and the area you had to hit behind the ear, was the size of a dollar coin and you had to hit at the correct angle. That was back in the era when all pianos had ivory keys and billiard/snooker balls were made from dyed ivory also.
I deer hunt with a cz550 in 375h&h. Use 250 grain hornady gmx rounds. Causes a clean hole all the way through and does alot less meat damage than a 270 or 3006.

A lot of people think a .375 H&H is not enough for Elephant. It is and I shot an Elephant with a 300 grain solid. 1 shot went through the upper chambers of the heart. The Elephant went 30 yards and dropped.
My favorite for you to use is the .700 nitro. My favorite for me to use is the .375 H&H! There will be a lot of unsold turkeys on discount here real soon. Some frozen or semi frozen turkeys would make a good exploding target.
I've owned a couple of 375 H&H's. One I had re-chambered and re-bored to 458 Lott years ago. Long before you could buy an over the counter 458 Lott, or the ammo or brass for it. I still have the 458 Lott. If you handload, you can really make the 375 come alive and stay within pressure limits. You can load bullets down to 235 or even lighter for it.
When I was mining in Central Africa years back, we had 6 different safari camps within 100km of our mine. All of the guides carried .375 H&H's. One camp owner had a double barreled 416 Rigby. We'd sometimes get invited down to his camp for drinks. One night we got a bit carried away and ended up spending the night there. Early the next morning, the rooster went off...cockadoodle doo, cockadoodle BAM. Yep, .416. Owner was hungover and didn't like the bird waking him up. It looked kinda like your watermelons in this vid, only much smaller pieces.
Big boom sticks are cool. You need to feature some high velocity stuff. 22-250 Rem or 257 Wby or 6.5-300 Wby. Something along those lines. Turns stuff into a cloud of mist.

My Father was a hunting guide. He used this caliber when guiding Kodiak Brown Bear hunts in our home state of Alaska. We used to "chop" down trees with it when checking zero.
That was cool to see a 375 in action. I’ve had one for about 28 years and have always liked the cartridge. Recoil isn’t terrible, and it still has enough power for most hunting situations. Keep up the good work.
The 375 H&H showed more hydrostatic reaction than the 500 or 700 magnums. If you could only have one rifle to use anywhere on earth, the 375 H&H makes more sense because it's been around over 100 years, it will be available in areas where the 458 Lott, 500 magnum or 700 magnums can't be found. The 375 in bullet weights from 270 gr. to 350 gr. can be effectively used to take all land animals on earth down to small deer and pigs. "It's Nacho Cheese"
I have a Ruger No 1 Tropical in 375, and when the guy I bought it from told me it was worse than 300WM I didn't believe him. I put 10 rounds down it, handed it to my friend who's about 40lbs smaller than me, and watched him fall on his butt 2x out of 10. Now I can't find ammo for it sadly so it's a safe queen.

Just for the record I have tested and done load development for essentially all of the elephant gun calibers from the .600 Nitro Express on down...as well as dozens of tests with a wide variety of .50 BMG handloads using a plethora of projectile types in all kinds of targets at both standard and extremely high pressure levels. and have been doing this since the early 1960"s... ballistics is what I am most curious about. I am just trying to give back some guidance based on my experience... which by the way, does not include a .700 Nitro! It would be quite interesting to find out how the heck Scott managed to come up with one of these, who made it and how much they cost (we already know how much they cost to feed)?
Again, this comment is absolutely NOT about bragging... it's about sharing information that may hopefully be helpful, based on real world experience. Lastly, the comments that I was directing my response to were right about the use of pine boards in earlier days for penetration tests, but those were generally used for the testing of handguns apart from even earlier tests by the military. That H&H rifle is a beauty, not too long ago that caliber was really a thumper in the minds of lots of shooters. Nowadays bigger bores seem to be the new choices, but considering when it was developed, well over a hundred years ago, the old girl still commands a lot of respect. Great video Scott, I'm sorry you didn't have any fun shooting it! LOL. I've shot its' little brother for almost fifty years, (300 H&H) and love it.
That gun has a moderate velocity with heavy slugs and the most longevity among hunting rifles or the Mega version of 30.06 compared to high velocity RUM or Wby were maintaining is a issue.
It was crazy seeing the bullet shrapnel glisten in the light for a split second after hitting the target. Really shows how even shrapnel acts as miniature bullets, and shows why you need to stay back so far.
The beauty of the 375 is that with a 300 Sierra BT soft point it has the same trajectory as a 30-06 with 180's .....so you can reach out and touch things without the rainbow you get with the big heavies.

Almost the smallest. The smallest smallest would be the 9.3x62. it's the minimum legal caliber for elephant (in some places), though most don't allow it. Great video though 👍

I know .333 Jeffery was used successfully on all big African game. Don't know what its modern legality for elephant would be, though.

I shot a light .458 Win that a guy was building (Mauser action) a while back. Looking at it overall, you'd have never guessed it was a dangerous game rifle. I relaxed too much on the second round and the low power scope conked me. It had some recoil.

I did that too but I got scope bite. Busted my head open and was bleeding. I didn't stop shooting though. It was just a flesh wound and now it's a scar of an old battle wound, lmao. That's what I get for holding it loosely in the winter with a winter coat on and a scope with only 2.5" or so of eye relief.

Having a 5 round internal magazine makes this gun much more useful when hunting I’m assuming. Pretty cool.

The 700 NE was developed using 1000gr bullet and 160gr smokeless powder. The only reason was, H&H had assured a client they would not produce another 600NE after he bought his, guaranteeing its value as the last. Another client wanted one, H&H would not go back on their word, so he said, then make me a 700NE and they laughed at the ridiculous idea. But eventually agreed, but the client had to shoulder all the cartridge and load development along with associated costs.

That's a tiny caliber for you! I've seen this used on brown bears as well as dangerous game in Africa. It puts the big bears down with authority. As with anything proper bullet placement is paramount. Love all your videos, Scott, HAPPY THANKS GIVING to you and your family.
I loved the cheese in slow motion. It reminded me of some gallon paint cans I shot years ago. I shot them with a .270 and it was still amazing how high the paint flew as the cans themselves folded inside out.
.270 is my go to round for anything I want to hunt from deer to elepghant!!!
I love my old 375H&H... being from Zimbabwe it comes in handy at times... beautiful cartridge, low recoil, suitable for most African game from the smallest to the biggest & very good penetration - once had a lengthwise shoot through on a bull hippo (on land). Try solids on your steel plate...
I’d really like to see you get a 416 Rigby and run it through it’s paces on all your stuff using 410g Woodleigh RNSP. I have one and think you will be amazed at what it will penetrate and how far.
I have one too and the 416 Rigby is a beautiful cartridge and you can pick it up out of a lineup.
I fired a 375H&H. Up until that point, I thought my shoulder would never be the same after firing a 303 Brit. All the 50 BMG's that I've fired since still don't compare to that.
A good 375 H&H does pack a proper wallop
Is .303 British really that bad? The largest I've shot is 7.62x54r, which seems to have more energy than .303 British. 7.62x54r kind of hurt but it was manageable and easy to get use to.
@@thesituation5315 303 Brit is not bad at all, I own a Lee Enfield and the recoil is nothing really, maybe if someone is not used to the brass butt pad perhaps, but in my opinion it is a fine vintage calibre
My favorite Elephant rifle round you haven't reviewed yet is the Weatherby 460 Magnum. Don't be scared give it a try.

The dude who shot more elephants than anyone else ever mostly used a 7mm Mauser, I know it's not legal these days and circumstances were different but damn, shows you the real power of even an "average" rifle cartridge when appropriately loaded.

He had other rifles also 6,5 MS, .318 Wr, .416 ,.400 double. Hi book The Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter" ,is a epic book, mix that with Ruark/ Selby that bought his ,400 and one of his 6 7x57s Rigby rifles and gave them to Selby .
That was W.D.M aka "Karamojo" Bell that used the 7mm Mauser on Elephant. He took 1011 Elephant and about 800 with the 7mm Mauser using a 172gr round nose solid.

I have to say it is a tie between the .500 and .700 rifles, it's just something about those double barrels that really appeals to me :-)
Also if Scott wanted to shock his viewers he would make a video with several tables that are not destroyed, at this point the tables are just another target.
Scott, the 375 H & H is a very popular mid-bore cartridge. It eclipsed the older 9.3x62 after WWI, when anything German was disfavored. Perry Pappous
Fun fact, all belted magnums are derived from .375 Holland & Holland as a parent case. The belt was utilized for proper headspacing as the original rounds were tapered for easier extraction in adverse conditions. .458 Lott is just blown out to .458, the winchester belted magnums are all trimmed and renecked.
Honestly, this one surprised me with how MUCH energy transferred into your targets. Like, the .700NE makes things blow up really well, but this almost does it just as good, and it's literally, barely larger than half the size.
Not gonna lie: that round is fantastic in the energy-delivering department. Worth every single shot!
I think the smallest would really be the 6.5x55. It's been used on elephants for a long time with round nose full metal jackets very successfully, but is now illegal in most countries. Here in the states people would argue that it's too light for whitetail lol

First you can't go wrong with any thing CZ makes, they just do it right. Second the .375 H&H is a grand old cartridge ]1912] . It is in my opinion the most accurate of the big bores and will shoot different weight bullets to the same point of impact. I had one of mine reamed to .375 Weatherby. You gain 200 to 300 feet per second and can use either round.But when you fire a standard .375 in the Weatherby chamber it comes out Weatherby.

I’m not a big bore kinda guy. 300 win mag or 7mm ultra mag is about as big as I can shoot over and over comfortably. But as always, love what you and your pops do.

That cartridge seems like an awesome blend of velocity and weight. I think I like it even better than the 700 Nitro.
In the 80s Lived and worked in Ethiopia. I legally shot a Hippo from 30 mt with my BRNO ZKK602 in 375hh. The 300gr solid. The bullet went through the left shoulder, across the chest and ended just under the skin on the other side. The hippo dropped on the spot.
375 H&H is my favorite because it is plenty powerful, but also versatile, available, and the history of its use in Africa intrigues me.

Karamojo Bell shot many elephants with the same round I used to use for smaller deer, a 6.5 x 54 Mannlicher, with a 160gr round nose. This was at the beginning of the last century. He said that placement was the secret and the area you had to hit behind the ear, was the size of a dollar coin and you had to hit at the correct angle. That was back in the era when all pianos had ivory keys and billiard/snooker balls were made from dyed ivory also.
I have a TC single shot in 375 HH, 500 mag and 460 XVR. love that thing, it thumps and it's super light.

I deer hunt with a cz550 in 375h&h. Use 250 grain hornady gmx rounds. Causes a clean hole all the way through and does alot less meat damage than a 270 or 3006.

A lot of people think a .375 H&H is not enough for Elephant. It is and I shot an Elephant with a 300 grain solid. 1 shot went through the upper chambers of the heart. The Elephant went 30 yards and dropped.
My favorite for you to use is the .700 nitro. My favorite for me to use is the .375 H&H!

I've owned a couple of 375 H&H's. One I had re-chambered and re-bored to 458 Lott years ago. Long before you could buy an over the counter 458 Lott, or the ammo or brass for it. I still have the 458 Lott. If you handload, you can really make the 375 come alive and stay within pressure limits. You can load bullets down to 235 or even lighter for it.
When I was mining in Central Africa years back, we had 6 different safari camps within 100km of our mine. All of the guides carried .375 H&H's. One camp owner had a double barreled 416 Rigby.
We'd sometimes get invited down to his camp for drinks. One night we got a bit carried away and ended up spending the night there. Early the next morning, the rooster went off...cockadoodle doo, cockadoodle BAM. Yep, .416. Owner was hungover and didn't like the bird waking him up. It looked kinda like your watermelons in this vid, only much smaller pieces.
The super slo-mo is really cool on exploding stuffs. Finally a table fights back, right in the junk.

Scott, I have a 375 h and h, I hand load it, 77 grains of 4350 imr, with a 220 grain flat nose, at 100 yards, can hide holes with a nickel.

My Father was a hunting guide. He used this caliber when guiding Kodiak Brown Bear hunts in our home state of Alaska. We used to "chop" down trees with it when checking zero.
I was expecting a 9.3 rifle, .375 H&H is the quintessential elephant cartridge.
Friend had Ruger #1 in 375H&H. Used to use cinder blocks with solids for targets. Good times. RIP CRAIG. 🙏❤😢

That was cool to see a 375 in action. I’ve had one for about 28 years and have always liked the cartridge. Recoil isn’t terrible, and it still has enough power for most hunting situations. Keep up the good work.

The 375 H&H showed more hydrostatic reaction than the 500 or 700 magnums. If you could only have one rifle to use anywhere on earth, the 375 H&H makes more sense because it's been around over 100 years, it will be available in areas where the 458 Lott, 500 magnum or 700 magnums can't be found. The 375 in bullet weights from 270 gr. to 350 gr. can be effectively used to take all land animals on earth down to small deer and pigs. "It's Nacho Cheese"
I have a Ruger No 1 Tropical in 375, and when the guy I bought it from told me it was worse than 300WM I didn't believe him. I put 10 rounds down it, handed it to my friend who's about 40lbs smaller than me, and watched him fall on his butt 2x out of 10. Now I can't find ammo for it sadly so it's a safe queen.
