A Number One in 7mm Rem. Mag. has been my primary hunting rifle since 1976. I love it, and have taken a wide variety of game with it. I also have a No. One in 7x57, with a Mannlicher stock. A truly beautiful rifle.
Mr. Hickok, you will probably never see this post, but just in case... I served as a firearms instructor for my agency for a total of 15 years. During that time I was constantly looking for a “better way” to do shoot so as to provide our trainees with the very best training possible. I discovered in my quest that when shooting a Remington 870 with rifled slugs that if the shooter pulled the butt stock hard into the shoulder and at the same time pulled hard forward on the for-end with the other hand that the apparent recoil and recoil arc were reduced significantly. This is particularly noticeable when shooting in the under arm assault position. I believe that by pulling forward with the support hand that one is absorbing part of the recoil with that hand thereby reducing the recoil felt by the shooter’s shoulder, or in the case of the underarm assault, the shooter’s support hand....
I have a double gun Holland & Holland in .375 H&H. It’s got beautiful gold in lays and filigreed in silver and platinum. Was my great grandpas/ he bought it in England back in 1932.
have had a Ruger No1 in 300 Win Mag for a lot of years. I keep my ammo on my left wrist, and I can shoot that thing pretty darn fast. Dropped a moose with it years ago and have loved it ever since. !!! Just a classic rifle. I did two things with mine. First I added a wolf main spring for faster hammer speed, and the second...probably the most important thing was adding a Kickeez recoil pad to it. What a difference !!!!! Also, not an add-on, but took the ejector spring and lessened it so I can save my brass ( reloading ) What a great rifle !!!!My neighbor has one he re-barreled from a 25/06 to a 30/06, then finally to a .243 with a truck axle schillen barrel. Beautiful wood furniture, flat black barrel, tricked out trigger, wolf mainspring, flat black rings and a 6-24x50 scope and he shoots it at 1,200 pretty darned well. Cool Guns !!!!
The No 1 Ruger, Bill Rugers favorite design of his entire career and an extremely fitting way to remember Mr. Ruger! I started with he No 1 in college starting with a 220 Swift cal. and have loved the rifles my entire life the last one of bought is in a .257 Weatherby Mag its equally as beautiful as the first one I owned, if you have that special appreciation of fine work and beauty/Art in a fine rifle you do need to own a No1 in your life it gives you a feeling inside that no black plastic rifle will never be able to fulfill and I have nothing against black rifles sometimes in ones life after you have and do own so many black rifles there is an opening for true blued steel, incredibly fine wood to steel finishes and the make one shot count and when you reach THAT point in your life I highly recommend Rugers finest rifle ever produced!
Good day sir I find it quite interesting that you are saying it has so much recoil.I am 15 years old south african and i grew up shooting my mauser 375 h&h and a sako 300 win mag.I think that I am just getting used to it.That 375 is an amazing caliber for anything.I have personally shot everything from kudu to duiker with it. Thank you for the great video
@@nazarderkach9320 I think that's exactly what it is. I used to think my .30-06 was a beast, but now I find it quite easy on my shoulder, although it took a few years to get to that point. If I had a good reason, other than pure gunlust, I would buy a .375 H&H and have fun with it.
My dad taught me to shoot with a Ruger No 3 he had re chambered from 22 Hornet to 223 Remington. He loaded anti Jackrabbit ammo. He put a Leupold 2x7 on it and I learned to not pull the trigger until I had the game in the sights.....Best gun ever
I found a can't pass it up deal 2 years ago. A gunshop in western Pennsylvania had 5 cerakoted stainless steel Mossberg Patriots in 375 Ruger, pretty close in ballistics, but fits a standard length action. $290 brand new. After sighting it in, some with the lead sled, I got a 3 shot group at 100 yds that measured .55" 270 gr Hornaday sp at 2,850fps. I quickly got it to my gunsmith and put a muzzle break on it. At only about 7 lbs, it was just short of brutal in recoil. Now it's like a 30'06 with 180 gr loads.
One thing I admire about the man , he takes the vicious rifle kick as though nothing happened. And at the same time the weapon is beautifully explained.
Dear hickok45, I regularely watch your videos, and I very often agree with your opinion. This video about the 375H&H was great again. I was lucky enough to be hunting in South Africa, this July/August, where I actually used a Sauer 202 in 375H&H, using a Rhino bullet, 300 grain. I shot anything from Cape-Buffalo, to Wilderbeest, Hartebeest, Kudu, Impala,... using a Svarowvski scope. I shot distances from 50 to 235 meters, which took it pretty much to the max distance. This caliber proofed to be such a great choice, that I do not even think of another caliber for the next trip there. The recoil is not small, but when you focus on dangerous game, you actually don´t feel the recoil at all. Meat damage was surprisingly small. The weight retention was incredible, the deformed bullet showed 299 grain on the scale. I can only recommend this combination on medium or heavy game. Regards from Germany, Klaus
Hickok 45, does me good to see a man able to spend his life doing what he loves. Best to you and your son as you folks continue doing what you love together.

Really enjoy your channel, guys! Discovered it few weeks back and have had a blast watching my way through them all! I've been a gun guy all my life, but I was born in the wrong country to be able to shoot some 'fun' guns. I owned two 22 cal. riffles at one point and enjoyed shooting at the local outdoor range but I sold them when I moved abroad. I feel like I'm able to live my joy of target shooting through you, but it's not just the guns - it's your way of "teaching us" that I enjoy too. - It didn't surprise me when I found out that you are/were a teacher --- a very entertaining and informative one to top! Keep up the good work, Hickok & John - I look forward to hear the gong chime again! The Icelander in the UK.
Beautiful rifle. I have the “tropical” version chambered for the .416 Rigby. My .375 H&H is a Winchester Model 70. A great shooter and a classic cartridge. .
Had a Mauser bolt in .375, a beautiful rifle. Accurate and fun to shoot. Recoil was not bad. The drawback was a little heavy and price of ammo makes handloading a must. A can of powder disappears real fast ! . It is a very accurate round, almost as good as the .300 H&H. The 300 h&h in a win m70 is the finest rifle I have ever owned.
Nice, I can remember when the #1's first came out, they had such stellar wood on them, I worked in a gun shop in those days and it seemed that each one we opened had wood more beautiful than the last. BTW, I did get to fire one in .458, brutal recoil as you might imagine. Kevin in CT
I lived and worked in 6 countries in Africa for 30 years. 7 years in Ethiopia (76 to 83). I was based in a rural area with plenty of opportunity for shooting wart hogs that did a lot of damage to poor farmers crops. I imported a BRNO Zkk602 in 375hh for the job and loaded my own ammo. I was only 5ft8 and a light weight at 58kg. I soon learned the way to avoid a sore shoulder was to treat this rifle like a good woman, hold it close and give it respect. I found that even with reduced bullet weights it maintained a flat trajectory at decent ranges. Lovely gun and calibre.
I have several bolt action rifles chambered in .375 H&H. Love them all but my favorite is my 1949 Winchester model 70 Safari grade. I have a Ruger no.1 chambered in .416 Rigby and love it!!! I did install the lim saver recoil pad on it. I found it at a Tanner gunshow years ago. I got the deal of the century. The tropical grade. Ruger no. 1. 100 rounds of ammo and set of dies for $600.00. only had 3 shots fired out of it. I've since taken my Ruger to Africa several times as my backup rifle for dangerous game.
Man! hickok45 is the man, he makes it look easy, I know young hunters here in South Africa who avoid the 375 like the plague. I think they great! But no joke!
I had a Winchester 375 h&h African. When sighting in the detachable scope I put the target at ten yards at the gun range. The gun shot dead center only 2 feet down. It hit the 2 by 2 angle iron they used to hold the target and blew it in half and it fell to the ground. The guy in the booth next to me shouted " YOU KILLED IT"! Best day of my life. I loved that gun.
A great video. love the no.1, its a pity people now are so obsessed with more militaristic firearms, and also ruger scaling back production so much of this classic rifle. I believe it was Bill Rugers pet project and when he was in the factory he insisted the best stock blanks were used on the no.1. Thanks
+ro eng There's room for both. Once you have one or two decent defensive handguns and long guns, it's time to start filling the safe with stacks of beautiful wood-furniture shotguns and rifles from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, among other things.
You are right about the wood quality. With guns having a 131 serial # prefix you can see the quality goes down. This rifle has straight grain in the butt stock. sadly typical of most No. 1 rifles today. The aesthetics and presentation that were the norm 50 years ago...............long gone today, and the price is tripled.
Im a trained field guide in South Africa and 375H&H is considered to the minim for a guide rifle. I know a few guides that refuse to carry anything less than 416 Rigby.
If you don't handload , you can't possibly grasp the value and versatility of that round. And to chamber it in that beautifully simple rifle was a perfect match.
+Bryan Smith They are anti-gun activists more likely. People who don't understand that giving a dislike means, giving a view. They take away with a hand, and give with another one.
My father owns one in .270 with the stock going all the way to the end of the barrel. They are one of the most comfortable rifles to hold the way the barrel sits farther back than on a bolt yet doesn’t feel like a break action
Me: Yes, your Honor, I killed him, but in self defense... Judge: With a gun that shoot rounds for buffalo and elephants? Me: Yeah, it was my concealed carry gun
Shot the No. 1 in 458 Win Mag, couldn't get past shot #3 in a row. Those big bore mags are brutal! My hat's off to you shooting the 375 that many times!
Now I think somebody needs to make a stop at their friendly local sheet-metal fab shop, and ask 'em if you can raid their scrap bin. After that grade-school field trip story, I suddenly have a need to see 50 pieces of stop-sign gauge steel stacked up all in row, for a proper documented penetration test with this .375, before you burn up the last of those two ammo boxes.
In 1998 I bought a new Ruger No.1H Tropical in .375 H&H for about $900. Although they have gone up in price, it may just reflect inflation. It's true that Ruger don't offer all the various models and calibers now; they seem to select just one combination to produce every year. The No.1 in .375 H&H is fun to shoot - Hickok45's accuracy with it is amazing. Factory rounds are so expensive today - glad I bought all mine long ago and reload.

Nah, F.C. Selous
Chloe Hennessey Can you post pictures of it?
It’s probably worth 10K +
trying to get rid of it? lol
Wish I had that rifle of yours!!!
NHH It’s been appraised at $154,800. So I had to have it insured at $170,000
I love how hickok still gets so much enjoyment out of shooting after all those years.
You made my day when you mentioned "effective Barrel length". Very important consideration and distinction.
have had a Ruger No1 in 300 Win Mag for a lot of years.
Good day sir
I find it quite interesting that you are saying it has so much recoil.I am 15 years old south african and i grew up shooting my mauser 375 h&h and a sako 300 win mag.I think that I am just getting used to it.That 375 is an amazing caliber for anything.I have personally shot everything from kudu to duiker with it.
Thank you for the great video
Well, it's probably a matter of habit.
This is my favorite episode! thank you for your time!
The hickok laugh gets me every time!
Never owned or even fired a Ruger #1, but have many years experience with the 375 H&H. I love that cartridge!
I love when you walk down and all i can hear in the background is the hundreds of shells clanking against the gravel
An old old man that used to live down the road from me growing up used to have one. You knew when he shot it.
"Tremors" is all I think about when I hear 375 H&H Magnum
+MadMax23 Knockdown power of the ying-yang :)
If you need it, and don't have it, you sing a different tune
+MadMax23 Technically it was Tremors 2, but you're close enough ;)

@@crazyfvck actually no in the first movie Reba McEntire's character gave Earl and Val her rifle when they left on Walters horses, she she says and I quote, you need something more powerful than that 30-30 take my 375 H&H Mag
I always liked the 300 H & H myself. Very smooth shooting compared to other 30 cal magnums.
I was given an old Remington 721 in .300 H&H and it was the most accurate .30 cal rifle I ever had
I love absolutely love my Ruger #1 in 300 H&H!!❤
I shot a .375 Ruger in Africa and I loved it. It shot very well and when shooting at game I never felt the recoil. Excellent
My dad had 30 06 version of Ruger One. Good 👍 rifle. One shot, one kill was his philosophy. Thanks for sharing.
I love when hickok45 says “hey hickok45 here”❤️
Next up: Hickok shoots a .600 Nitro Express...

@Sebastian Lauinger No muzzle brake, hip-fired on a 23° incline!

2 bore rifle......33.7mm dia. 3500grain bullet....1500 fps and 17,000 ft lbs energy at muzzle....
@Andre McGoo with no brake
Beautiful rifle. I have the “tropical” version chambered for the .416 Rigby. My .375 H&H is a Winchester Model 70. A great shooter and a classic cartridge.
.
Hickok is the man and his reluctance to shoot it is hilarious. My Lord, the 45-70 is a load for me. I can't imagine the power of the 375 H&H.

Shout out to John (Jon?) for being a great camera man. Catches everything and gets different angles and close ups.
also a wonderful stand up comedian!
you are a legend Hickok
Love it when he laughs after the first shot!
Looks like a good time !
My shoulder hurts just watching you.
Man! hickok45 is the man, he makes it look easy, I know young hunters here in South Africa who avoid the 375 like the plague.
Well. Those bullets made it through those buckets. Must have been soft water.
They don't make water like they used to.
Headframe Hunters you left out shot guns....
yup
You are right about the wood quality. With guns having a 131 serial # prefix you
can see the quality goes down. This rifle has straight grain in the butt stock.
sadly typical of most No. 1 rifles today. The aesthetics and presentation that
were the norm 50 years ago...............long gone today, and the price is tripled.
@@robertmarkert1868 I picked up a Ruger 3 in 45/70, made in 1979. Haven’t even shot it yet and it’s one of my favorites
Im a trained field guide in South Africa and 375H&H is considered to the minim for a guide rifle. I know a few guides that refuse to carry anything less than 416 Rigby.
Got to love the 375 H&H. I have two rifles on that caliber. A BRNO and a Remington. Never get tired of shooting them.
If you don't handload , you can't possibly grasp the value and versatility of that round.
And to chamber it in that beautifully simple rifle was a perfect match.
That's a strong rifle!
I've seen this video a couple or a few times, and I never realized how far the lid rolls @15:48 lol it rolls, takes a turn, and keeps on rolling lol
Lol I bet the dislikes are from guys who only play with drum mag's
+Bryan Smith or anti-gun hippies.
+Bryan Smith They are anti-gun activists more likely. People who don't understand that giving a dislike means, giving a view. They take away with a hand, and give with another one.

There's nothing wrong with being anti-gun.
My father owns one in .270 with the stock going all the way to the end of the barrel. They are one of the most comfortable rifles to hold the way the barrel sits farther back than on a bolt yet doesn’t feel like a break action
Many years ago I helped a friend in Texas work up a hand load for this same rifle. My shoulder gave a half throb as soon as the video started.
Now Magnum Research should make a revolver that accepts this cartridge. You know, for concealed carry.
Yep. You would only need one round for the elephant and the grizzly bear behind it
Snub nose.
Perfect.
Me: Yes, your Honor, I killed him, but in self defense...
Judge: With a gun that shoot rounds for buffalo and elephants?
Me: Yeah, it was my concealed carry gun
@@Overlord99762 "I only fired once."
@@-BWS- even better get a rifle in .375 H&H then Obrez it
Had this in a 7 mm mag it had beautiful wood but the recoil from a falling block is genuine punishment for the shoulder.
I was going to say..” He sure is talking much and delaying the shooting”😂😂😂
I hope hickok45 is still doing these gun videos 20 years from now. Gunfire = The sound of Freedom!
My dad had a Ruger #1 in 458 magnum. A cannon, pure and simple.
"..rogue elephants, or whatever there might be..."
Am I still watching a hickok review? Yes, yes I am, and it is great.
Still waiting on a Webley video!
Really like the look of this Ruger, and I hope your shoulder can recover.
Nine minutes to fire your first shot. I think that is a record for you.
I was thinking the same thing!
makes sense! giant bullets lol 53 bucks for 20
Bill Givens He was working up to it!
I love the honesty and accuracy of hickok45. My go-to channel before buying a firearm.
Shot the No. 1 in 458 Win Mag, couldn't get past shot #3 in a row. Those big bore mags are brutal! My hat's off to you shooting the 375 that many times!
Something about the No 1, feels like sealing a vault door when you close the action. I'll have one some day, they are just neat.
"That's beyond 38 special" lmao. 😂😂😂😂
Stop sign material is hardened just a bit and a little tougher than everyday sheet steel like A-36!
Mr hickok you are the real life terminator of our generation a real boss hero when shit hits the fan i for sure wanna be by your side
In Canada thats now an assaulty rifle...
In Canada, you can't legally carry pepper spray for self defense, and double-barrel shotguns are in the process of being banned if the Liberal Party get their authoritarian way. Life ain't so good up here...

single shot rifles are absolutely awesome. Not a super tactical death machine, but still high quality and fun pieces.
