2009 Toyota Sienna Camper Van Features

  • In this video, I describe some of the features I’ve built into a 2009 Toyota Sienna. All of the wood components and curtain features are installed without any new holes drilled and can be removed easily without leaving a trace.
    -----------------------------------------
    For those interested in the design plans, unfortunately, I built everything from napkin sketches and measurements on the fly. I spent a fair bit of time thinking through ideas on what we needed and how to build them. I didn't spend much on materials though; the materials list consists of two sheets of 3/4" birch plywood, four folding leg brackets, small toggle clamps, six feet of piano hinge, and a handful of hardware (screws, bolts, nuts, etc). You can see more of the design in these photos: photos.app.goo...

    Really clever. Gave me some new ideas. I'd never use the double bed as I'd have to have the added storage/counter from a single bed set up. But I could see how this would appeal to a couple wanting to camp. Thanks for this video from 6 years ago.

    Left side, full length, 28" wide bed with 6" mattress.
    Piano hinged into 3 parts to gain access to storage "toy box" underneath.
    Rear 2/3 are clothes.
    Front, behind driver hides cooler & dry food.
    Cooler runs off cigarette lighter from front console under driver seat to cooler.
    Passenger side full vertical wall from slider door to hatch.
    Electronics, toiletries and knick nacks (no paddy whacks!) covered by a large wood plank table.
    Table drops down from wall to create a work table while sitting on bed/bench.
    Ability to access the van from the back or the passenger side slider easily.
    Driver side slider mostly stays closed.
    Electric platform scooter stored behind passenger seat with charger plug fed from front console under passenger seat.
    Simplicity.
    Hatch stays up to allow ventilation and beach views

    Bruce, in one of your responses below, you mention that the bed frame is secured to the van floor. Can you explain a little bit about how you did that? Where did you tie in to? I'm building a bed in my 2nd generation Sienna, and I'm trying to figure out how to do that. Any tips you might be able to provide are greatly appreciated, thanks!

      In my gen2 Sienna, I made J-bolts out of long bolts. For example, I put a ¼-20UNC bolt that was 4" long in a vice and pounded over the top so it formed an upside-down J. Then I used these by hooking the J under the seat anchors in the floor and guiding the threaded part up through holes in the wood so I could tighten nuts to secure the wood. It was very secure but it was difficult to guide multiple bolts up through the wood at the same time. In my gen3 Sienna, I hose-clamped the wood to the seat anchors and it was much easier and just as secure. Hope that was clear.

    What did you use on the legs of the bed so they don't collapse when set in bed mode..talking about hardware or engineered???

    • @BruceParks
      @BruceParks  4 роки тому +3

      The only way the legs could collapse is if the bed platform itself could move forward or rearward but it’s prevented from moving like that since it’s attached to the bed frame below, which is solidly secured to the van floor. So, when the legs are pivoted down, there’s no detention or hardware needed to hold them in place - weight on the bed platform pushes the legs into the floor carpet. Hope that makes sense.

      I don't really have anything drawn up on my build. I showed a bunch of detail on the upper cabinets and ventilation system in this video (ua-cam.com/video/BgmgFfniEBE/v-deo.html). The muffin fans are simply 12VDC cooling fans for electronics. They are available in many different diameters. I think I used 3" units due to space constraints. If you can go larger, do it. On hot nights, you almost can't have too much air.

    I have a bed but would love to have both tables made, can I get plans for the tables or do u make them? Especially the one that is used as a back rest, I am working on being stealthy in my van.

    • @BruceParks
      @BruceParks  6 років тому

      I built the backrest/table feature based on some ideas floating around in my head and never drew up any plans. The key element to making it work is having a super-solid base attached to the floor so that the backrest/table can lock into it and not be wobbly. I bolted a stout wooden crossbeam to the floor to which I attached an angled base behind the driver seat for the backrest to latch into and an upright base behind the passenger seat for the table to latch into. I've since sold the minivan to a good friend of mine who is driving it around the US so I can't take any pix to help you but please check out this photo album (photos.app.goo.gl/desmsQ1Uohlnk1py1) if you haven't already done so to get a better idea of how the pieces go together.

    Excellent craftsmanship...
    But...the Sienna has a deep well in the rear where the third row drops into...why not utilize that?
    I might try to build the sleeping platform on an angle...the interior is 67" wide...75" is achievable...it could be 48" wide at the shoulders and taper to 36"...cutting a dense foam pad to fit and covering it would be a piece of cake...
    An angled platform would free up a lot of space behind the driver's seat...make a large triangular cabinet...

    • @BruceParks
      @BruceParks  5 років тому +1

      You're right, the deep well is very useful. We stowed a lot of stuff down there, like camp chairs, cooking gear, emergency gear, food, etc. I've since sold this 2009 Sienna mini-campervan and built a 2011 Sienna mini-campervan with a very different approach. You can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/R6KnJB1m6Ds/v-deo.html
      As for the bed, when you're building for one person, there are lot of configuration options. My view is there isn't a single best way - all of them have pros and cons. Angled to clear more space behind the driver seat for cabinetry certainly allows the cabinet to be bigger, a good thing if that's a priority.

    How do you connect the table at the rear to the bed?

    • @BruceParks
      @BruceParks  2 роки тому

      There’s a small dowel in the underside of the table edge that drops into a hole in the rear end of the bed.

  • @andreaanderson5272

    What is the width of bed in "double bed" mode? Thx!

    • @BruceParks
      @BruceParks  3 роки тому +1

      The platform was about 48" wide and we used a futon mattress on it. It pretty much completely filled the width of the van. I've since sold this van and have a 2011 Sienna with a different camper configuration.

    I love to watch van builds but, to be honest, you really need to shell the inside that will give you at least 12 inches on each side you want insolation, gut your minivan you would be surprised how much room you have

      We don’t need exact measurements, just how it is made. Please send us some instructions, it will help us very much. Thanks

    • @BruceParks
      @BruceParks  4 роки тому +1

      The expandable slat bedframe is basically made from a pair of ladder frames nested inside each other. As I recall, the slats are 2” wide. Once you layout the overall bedframe size so that you have the length and width, you can then layout the slat locations; be sure to include ½” gap between each slat. Now build one ladder frame. It’ll be as wide as half the overall width + 2” and you install every other slat because the 2nd ladder frame will have the other slats. Then, you have to build the second ladder frame while nested in the first. This way, the 2nd will collapse into the first to create a narrow bed or it can be pulled out to create a wide bed. My description probably sounds like nonsense but it’s hard to describe using just words.

    what kind of mattress do you use? does your gf/wife go with you?

    • @BruceParks
      @BruceParks  6 років тому +4

      We used a fairly thick (9”) full size futon mattress - comfy both for sleeping and when folded up in sofa mode. To keep the folded futon from sliding down, I pulled a cord around it’s waist (in the fold) and hooked each end to the bed frame. My wife and I took a 6 week (9000 mile) road trip across the US and Canada last summer and were very comfortable in the van.

    • @SteveHazel
      @SteveHazel 6 років тому +1

      a 9 inch thick full trifold mattress? cool! got a link? the ones i see stop at 6 inches thick. I like your table, too! Got a link to the hinges? I've got a Nissan nv200 that i put a bed platform in. I'm currently redoing it so I don't have to haul my electric cooler onto the passenger seat at night :) But making a custom "campervan" is super fun !! Nice design on your's. Good wood workin'. Lots of vans I see are handmade but, mmm, they're obviously not a woodworker ha ha.

    • @BruceParks
      @BruceParks  6 років тому +3

      The futon mattress isn't a tri-fold, or even a duo-fold, it's a regular futon mattress, that's why we needed to secure it from sliding down. The leg brackets were from Amazon (a.co/4juFBCM ). I like the NV200 - looks like it makes a great base for a campervan. Saw an awesome pro-build of one (I think by Campervan North America) when we were in Yellowstone last year. Good luck with yours.

    • @SteveHazel
      @SteveHazel 6 років тому +1

      Oh ok gotcha. I like the idea of a trifold so i can still have tall stuff in the van. But they stop at 6 inches :( So I'm thinking a 4" hi density foam one plus another memory foam one on top. But then there's still the top sheet to worry about. decisons decisons :) Yeah this thing is a littttttle tight. But I'm nearly there with my design !! Thanks for the link, sir - much appreciated.

    Total monstrosity. IMO Bulky, heavy, completely unnecessary. Does nothing to add utility compartments. Other people's plywood sectionals are far more useful.
    Just put 3" foam inside a foldable cloth bag, 25" or so segments.
    I just started thinking and watching these videos a week ago. Used to be a cabinet maker too.

      Isn't it cool that people build these camper vans using their own unique skill sets in order to suite their own particular desires? That's what I find so fascinating and why I'm currently dreaming up my own set up. The multipurpose back rest and table is my takeaway from this build.
