Intentional language learning is rather interesting in the sense that people expect results in very little time. A native speaker typically isn't expected to use their language at all for a few years, but rather just absorb the information - yet someone who decides to learn a second language is somehow hoping to be able to form basic sentences and have a simple conversation after a few minutes. I am no expert, but it does seem reasonable that a language learner should approach the challenge without too much stress and unrealistic expectations of progress, and instead take things in a comfortable pace.
The difference to a native speaker is that native speakers learn their first language when they are a baby and a toddler. As such a young human you have zero resources and your brain is still very small, so all you can do is absorb and mimic. When you are grown up, however, the methods of learning a language are plenty and there are several systems that you can use as an adult that can speed up your language learning process significantly. You are not a toddler anymore. So depending on the language you are learning and the way you are learning it it's not unrealistic to be able to use the language rather quickly in a simple way.
Would just like to add that immersion is an unskippable part of the process. Anyone who wants to know the science please read Dr. Steven Krashens - input hypothesis. I have noticed the difference between speakers who still use English as a crutch to 'translate' in their head, versus people like myself who went completely monolingual for extensive periods of time. As a Brit who studies in South Korea, I have seen people who only 'study' and people who mostly immersed, the difference is night and day. Especially when giving class presentations in Korean. Either way, I enjoyed the editing style and your funnels in the description are nicely layed out. I think it's an effective business model you've got going here, definately will be taking notes. I hope looking into Steven Krashens research helps with your Mandarin journey.
As a native speaker of mandarin who is learning english and a second foreign language, i'm really motivated by your video and i do love ur accent!! Thx for the inspiration ;)
Language learning is super easy and fun. As long as you have the interest and motivation, nothing can stop you from learning it. For me I’m well versed in four foreign languages excluding my native tongue and want to add two more. It’s easy so long as you’re interested in the country it’s people and their culture. You can’t really learn a foreign language without any of those ingredients!😮
Your story of wanting to learn Chinese is almost exactly like mine! I'm 100% Chinese but since moving to the Uk at a young age, I lost touch with it and feel disconnected and somewhat embarrassed when visiting family in Malaysia because I couldn't read or express myself as well in the language. I'm intermediate level but want to progress to fluency. Your tips are very helpful, I'm aiming to apply these to new languages in future.
A hours ago started to write scripts for youtube video to share my experience how I learned English with this 0 to fluent format🙈 And just got recommendation😅 Thank you, your experience was different and I learned new things ❤
Hey. Just wanted to thank you podcasters and Tubers like you that finally got me starting off my 2nd UA-cam channel. This time this journey is a lot more special. Keep up the great work!
im inlove with THE DOCTOR...her eyes is also talking by just looking at it..her smile is just wooowww...staring at her while talking about things is heaven..🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘
@IzzySealey Izzy you know how crazy I am, I'm trying to learn Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Arabic at the same time despite how bad an idea that is lol 😂 of course that's on top of being a doctor, making UA-cam videos etc etc... Anyway, I'm in the process of managing my time and energy better, including making time for doing just a teensy weensy bit of language learning when I'm feeling too tired to do anything else! "What is your why?" is such an important point - one of mine is that I'd love to communicate with my patients and my viewers in their language! I would LOVE to learn Mandarin eventually (my sister has managed to teach herself!) so I very much look forward to your course! 🔥🔥
You can listen to videos, such as those by Zoe of Zoe Languages, a Chinese who also speaks Arabic, Turkish, Farsi, German, French, etc. Ruri Ohama, teaches a few languages, including parental Turkish & Japanese.
What a fabulous channel it is! I love it. I sense your positive vibes. Furthermore, it influenced me to thrive and gain better results in studying english :)
I have a fascination with the Japanese culture and plan on visiting Japan in the near future. So learning the language would be beneficial in my case, so that's my goal and that's what I've been doing. Motivation is the key factor when learning a new language. One of my best friends is half Japanese, so I pick her brain. Thanks for the push.
Beautiful, motivational and detailed, on a psychological level, Izzy! I am curious, how you adapted yourself from China to UK, that is totally different than China, from too many aspects, you know which ones, for sure! Love it, either again, the right hand side! ❤🔥🙏
very cool ! i am a registered massage therapist in Ontario,Canada and over the years there have been soooo many moments where a mainlander has spoken to me and i used what limited chinese i had to say a few words. Usually just to say yes or no or greet. They'd be soooo happy and then so disappointed that s all i had however, there have been a few patients who are chatty and will talk to me in chinese. i forced myself to speak chinese each time and if i didn't know words i would say it in cantonese or english and we would both learn 2 months later, i started getting random comments saying my chinese improved alot since we were a full on conversation. My BIG goal atm is to learn how to read and write traditional characters i just wanted to leave this comment because its nice to share the journey with someone - i think mandarin speaking wasnt too big a transition since i already speak cantonese fluently im also learning bits n peices of Viet (very difficult) to impress a girl, Hindi in case of telemarketers and Arabic - after all, canada is very diverse
Time-blocking & energy contingencies are great tips! And ones I haven’t heard from most language learning UA-camrs. Thanks! Спасибо большое за помощь))
Peace be upon you all. The part that interested me was the "goal". Determine the goal that will motivate you at the time of failure and frustration in the journey of learning the language . As for me and to answer your question, I would like to learn the Chinese language "Mandarin" to go through a new experience and adventure that I add to my life and get to know its people, and go through the experience of living with them, and as long as I am alive I will learn more a possible number of languages " (God willing / إن شاء الله) " Yes ! I am currently learning French and English 😎🗡️ .... and finally, I wish you success in your work Miss Izzy and everyone who aspires to learn, learn and learn
Saved! I am going to revisit this next week. Being of mixed British/Nigerian heritage, I used to be able to speak my mother's tongue a little when I was younger. I've always had quite an ear and interesting in languages. However, having been through and worked in our school system, our culture and education doesn't necessarily emphasise the joy, importance and utility of learning other languages. I really want to pick my Korean back up and this was a big motivation boost! Thank you, Izzy! You have a very brilliant knack of explaining things in a palatable way, and your diction is so lovely. It's actually quite soothing to listen to and learn simultaneously :D
Hi Sister "The ability to speak several languages fluently depends on the brain. Some people do really well in one language, while others are more proficient in multiple languages." -Genetics, Early exposure, Motivation and Practice.
Thanks for the sharing. Actually I can absolutely talk with English native speakers for some common topics. And English is my working language. Whereas, each time I start a vocabulary APP to improve my vocabulary pool I feel terribly anxious because there are too many words unknown for me. I am also looking for a motivation to keep moving forward like the dilemma as you mentioned that as an adult, we have to work or take care of my kids. That makes me frustrated somehow. Not like playing a game, I can get money and experience for each action I make in a video game. Most of time, I get nothing from English learning. I can feel apparently I am not capable to memorize a word than when I was younger. All of above makes me frustrated. Thank you so much for the video. I think I can persist no matter how exhausted. I don't want to lose the connection with my friends in Australia. I believe one day I can get to the US to visit my cousin. I can go to London to see a football game for Arsenal. I can get to Australia to see my best friends. Keep moving then.
When learning a language, don't rely on the standard phrases in textbooks. One instance a non-Chinese stopped by a stall serving Chinese food. The young man asked "Are you Chinese? You speak Chinese"? The other man replied "You speak Chinese"? "I can" sort of thing. A typical phrase for a standard greeting would be "Ni Hao" or "How are you? I'm fine, thank you". More than half the time you wouldn't hear people use the standard greetings like "Good morning" or "Good afternoon" to start a conversation. In one instance 4 Chinese people who don't know each other got invited to dinner. Each introduced himself by saying something like "I'm Mr. ABC, I come from this region of China". Again nobody used the standard phrase from a textbook like "Ni Hao" to greet each other.
I'm also half cantonese👍. But I don't consider mandarin as heritage. So I learn cantonese because it's part of my cultural heritage and mandarin only because it's a widely used lingua franca among chinese. I totally understand why you learn mandarin, but I thinks it's weird to consider it as your heritage if your have cantonese ancestors... What's your take on it ?
Thank you very much for these great tipps! I‘ll go living in a new country in some weeks and have to learn a complete new language 🙈 so I need an effective system to achieve this goal. Thanks for this video! Greatings from Germany! Ana 💝

I’ve been learning German and Japanese for two years. Haven’t gotten past B1 in both. I might have to create my learning path along your 5-step model. My weakest link is my lack of accountability buddies.
I just made a YT video about how I learned German (in German! Yay!) and literally the whooooole thing changed for me when I actually discovered my motivation. I went from being so overwhelmed and horrible at German to giving it my all and now I’m fluent 😊😊
Dr. Izzy, may I ask how you came to learn your English? I really like the way you speak, it really connects with the audience and keeps them engaged, I'm trying to learn deeper what it is that you do so successfully that I might take something that I can implement myself, if you would kindly share that would be really lovely, thank you. :)
You seem like an amazing woman, and I enjoy your videos. But I am also amazed at how you think so differently from me about everything. I am learning Mandarin here an there as my seventh language. I am learning it not because my girlfriend is from China, but because it is a really neat language, (but I might skip for the most part reading and writing characters). As a teenager I read Shakespeare instead of going to school. I learned the power of language and realized I could do anything in life by mastering language. The Chinese have great performing arts and knowing Mandarin should help me appreciate that -- and performing arts also have great power. Medicine is interesting, I guess,. but it seems like a mystery to me.
My reason for learning Chinese is so I don't have to read subtitles when watching wuxia. Also to read warning labels. Thanks for making learning easier!
I find I learn new languages easier if I go extremely slow. I spend weeks only on the alphabet and then I learn vocab with images rather than relying on English translations!
I’m a Chinese. I can still remember how difficult to learn to read both Traditional and Simple Chinese, plus lots of dialects, lots of different calligraphic characters, many ever-increasing slang words, acronyms… Writing is extremely difficult for a left-handed person (like me) to write those strokes designed for right-handed guys.
I'm planning to learn german in 21 days, today is my first day. You read in my mind for sharing this video. In 21 days I think, I'm being able to read books level of B2. I'll share my progress on tiktok and youtube.
Hey I’m in the middle of almost same journey. I’m sitting for my B1 in 10 days. I did my A1 in 4 days and got 76% skipped A2 due to work and getting myself ready for B1
Lizzy, How to choose a language at the time? 🌱 My why is neuro benefits and being able to understand and communicate when I visit the places on vacation Some languages on my mind are Japanese, Spanish, Few Indian Languages Marwari, Marathi, Telugu
Someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger is fluent in English but as an adult many would retain a foreign accent. The issue of whether you can learn the target language at home without moving to another country have been proven by polyglots like Moses McCormick and others. Moving to the US, Arnold had the advantage of being exposed to the target language all day. Like the Australian Gregory Rivers who became an actor in Hong Kong fluent in Cantonese. Moving to a new place forces you to speak the new language constantly. The rest of us who chooses to stay home not everybody have the incentive to get more exposure to a language outside the classroom by watching TV, reading magazines & newspapers, etc. in the target language. Not saying that people cannot become fluent learning only from a teacher. The ones who would go the extra distance talking to native speakers, watching TV, etc. would go much further sooner. The other myth is that people who are born into a specific ethnicity would be able to learn their "mother-tongue" easier even when the parents don't speak the language to their kids at home. People learn languages for different reasons. There are people from a non-Chinese background who learned to speak the language on their own (no exposure at home or help from the parents).
l agree with you Dr.Izzy, l feel like my energy is low after returning doing full time job, l'll try your tip of low energy listening for target language's music, comedy, movies,etc...
Hi Izzy! I'm starting the school year soon and I was wondering if you could make a video of how you used notion in university (if you used it)? It would be really helpfull. I love your videos as always!
I feel like it's hard to be motivated without being able to actually use the language in the practical world. Even with Spanish around me and a need for it from time to time I was still pretty lazy.
Problem is most people doesnt have a brilliant brain like yours who could see, analyze, and connect things easily. I like to observe smart people and see the way how they think and see things are completely different from normal people. Just using this video as example, you are able to see yours and other people's weakness, analyze it, and able to come up with solutions to defeat that. Life is not fair, some stuffs come so much easier for you guys. Yes i know you guys put a lot of time on it too. But for me, for some stuff, i have to keep rereading things 10 or more time to understand a simple ÷ sentence and connect the dot but sometime not at all. By the way, I'm glad you chose being a doctor and use your brain power to help people, or else it would be such a waste for such a brilliant mind.
Judging by the appearance, this girl can pass as a Uyghur. Cyrus Janssen (another UA-camr) once had a long conversation with a half-Asian/half-European Jewish author/businessman about China, and that guy said in the interview that his being in Xinjiang made him feel at home physically because those Xinjiang people would look at him and think of him as Uyghur, even though he was actually mixed-race. I think there was another UA-camr called Kevin in Shanghai(?), and he once made a challenge video of trying to identify the mixed-race people, and one of the people who disguised herself as "mixed race" was full Uyghur. Uyghur ethnicity, Central Asian and to some extent, West Asians share a lot of similar characteristics physically. Though, West Asians appear more like Europeans and less like Asians.

Well said!
I’m watching baby Chinese videos, because that is basically my level of Chinese
@@luxifer185 interesting!
This is so so so good! Such an important perspective that I think often language learners don’t get/think of!
Would just like to add that immersion is an unskippable part of the process. Anyone who wants to know the science please read Dr. Steven Krashens - input hypothesis.
Your approach is Bright as the sun 🌹
My reason for learning Chinese is so I don't have to read subtitles when watching wuxia. Also to read warning labels. Thanks for making learning easier!
Great video! Thanks 👍🎸
I find I learn new languages easier if I go extremely slow. I spend weeks only on the alphabet and then I learn vocab with images rather than relying on English translations!
Surbscribed to your channel today. You sound very positive.
Well done Izzy.
I will see you in the next video ❤ 👍
Hi Izzy, do you have a podcast?
I Passed my HSK 6 exam today. Mandarin is such a great language.
I’m a Chinese.
I can still remember how difficult to learn to read both Traditional and Simple Chinese, plus lots of dialects, lots of different calligraphic characters, many ever-increasing slang words, acronyms…
Writing is extremely difficult for a left-handed person (like me) to write those strokes designed for right-handed guys.
Writing is difficult BUT, now I can write with both my left and right hands 😂
Ambidextrous skill can increase lol
I have been spending over 50 years but still can't master writing Chinese characters Ambidextrously (not even close).
Thanks for sharing, Dr.
@@nj2458 Cool! congratulations for your effort and your success. I was not sure it was possible, you are the proof that it is.
Thanks for your sharing. Your videos are useful & you are so beautiful 😊
Lizzy, How to choose a language at the time? 🌱
My why is neuro benefits and being able to understand and communicate when I visit the places on vacation
Some languages on my mind are Japanese, Spanish, Few Indian Languages Marwari, Marathi, Telugu
Hello Izzy! I'm learning Mandarin too.
Thank you for the recommendatiions!
Hey Izzy, can you do a video (even a short one) in mandarin? As a fellow learner, would love to watch😄🏮🧧🀄️🐲
Hi, I miss your video. Thank you for sharing. I love your accent and the way you talk. 💙
Great video, thanks 👍🏻

l agree with you Dr.Izzy, l feel like my energy is low after returning doing full time job, l'll try your tip of low energy listening for target language's music, comedy, movies,etc...
Nice video thanks🤘
Great topic to discuss here, dear teacher. Thanks so much for sharing. Congrats. 🙏 10:12
Hi Izzy! I'm starting the school year soon and I was wondering if you could make a video of how you used notion in university (if you used it)? It would be really helpfull. I love your videos as always!
I am proudly say you are great and feel happy about your deep fan
You really touch my soul 💘💘💘
ILY izzy
I feel like it's hard to be motivated without being able to actually use the language in the practical world.
Even with Spanish around me and a need for it from time to time I was still pretty lazy.
Hello good doctor, I can say with confidence, that I can almost agree with everything you had to say on youtube and probably in your personal life!
Hope you will make a video speaking in Mandarin only
Thanks our doctor, you're the best.
She’s brilliant 🤍 She inspires us to become brilliant too 🤍🤍🤍
No sealy today but a gray baby shiba 🐶
But real talk i appreciate your tips 💕 i'm soooo guilty of constantly being stuck at step 3 and 4
Thanks mate❤️
