Stop Final Cut Pro From Taking Up So Much Space In 20 Seconds

  • If your FCP library is taking up too much space, delete the library's generated files. It won't hurt anything and it'll free up a ton of room. I do this when I'm finished with a project, or planning not to work on it for a few days so I can have more room for other activities.

    Here’s a very simple tip that will save you countless hours and save your library’s from being bloated.
    Step 1: Create a folder for ALL projects on external hard drive. I use a 3TB SSD OWC.
    Step 2: Create new folder on HD for (name it something like “All UA-cam videos )
    Step 3: Create a new folder for 1st project and an audio folder for ALL audio of current project.
    Step 4: Open up FCP and choose
    File->new->new library.
    Step 5: right click on library in left pane and choose New Project. Name your project and select the project folder you just created.
    What does this do?
    It helps you maintain ALL of your project files in 1 location at all times. No more searching endlessly for clips or audio files. Each library is maintainable. It doesn’t take you 3 minutes to open up a project etc.
    Hope this helps!

    The benefir of this though is faster editing and media scrubbing. If you can't live without these, get a 1TB thunderbolt external NVME drive. It'll cost a lot, but it will save you a ton of storage and time. When you're done with the edit and have sent off the Final Cut, delete the library.

      Yes, they are just extra files that get generated to help with editing….that’s if you transcoded your original media to optimized media and/or proxy media during import (or after import). If you are done working on a project there’s really no need to keep these extra files that take up more space. Deleting them will free up space but will keep your original project and media.
