Burke and Bourge were Budgie, in the same way Lennon and McArtney were the Beatles. Williams was a seamless replacement for Phillips. I can't blame Bourge for bowing out. Budgie's time had just not yet come. The studio albums with Burke and Bourge are a testament to all the talent that so often goes unrecognized. However few, we Budgie fans are indeed blessed.
Saddened to hear of the passing of Burke Shelley at the start of jan 2022,a great singer and bassist, met him a few times at Budgie gigs, such a lovely bloke,he’ll be saddly missed🕊🙏🌹
In the 1982 during my teens hood...i like Budgie...even Budgie was not so well known enough such as Led Zeppelin & Deep Purple. Jakarta Indonesia 1982.
Just found out Burke Shelley passed away. I've been listening to Budgie for about a year - been hooked from the moment I heard "Breadfan". Listened to all the albums several times. I'm incredibly grateful to Burke Shelley for persevering with Budgie, and creating incredible music that will live on forever! May he rest in peace.
First saw Budgie in 1973 - my first gig at Newcastle City Hall. The support was a four piece Judas Priest! Met Burke Shelly years later at a gig in Trillions in Newcastle. Really nice down to earth bloke - I was able to have a chat and a beer. Treasured memories of a very underrated band. RIP Burke.
First heard this band back in 1976. A boyfriend had a kick ass stereo with turntable and monster speakers. He played Budgie a lot. I was hooked instantly.
I am old & I am more than my share of cynical but I just realized there is a group of people I actually feel sorry for on this God-forsaken rock - People who have never heard of Budgie...
i discovered this band trough one rock channel called kazagastão and i'm was curious about Budgie, because i never heard this band before. when i listened Breadfan i loved it ! but i had been stayed sad with Burke's passed away. I would have liked to have seen him play. He will be always in our hearts. greetings from Recife-Brazil
Yes,this band should have been huge, forever a fan, thought provoking lyrics, mega riffs and melodies, the change of pace in many of their tracks remind me of early Sabbath, privileged to have seen them 3 times, even crossed the Pennines from Bolton to Wakefield town hall to get my fix. Keeping the rock alive brothers and sisters.
This indeed was great band. The name budgie was what kept them from really hitting the true lime light. This is also the inspiration band that brought us Rush if not for budgie there would have never been a band called Rush.
Rest in peace Burke, discovered your pretty unknown but way-ahead-of-its-time band in 2018 when I started playing bass. A real underrated underground rockband! Will now try to learn some Budgie songs on bass.
Takes me back 30 years, an 18 year old girl soaking in Prog rock, miss the vibe in the rock clubs in town, the long hair and leathers. Glad I experienced great music before all the crap came in x
Me too. Followed them all round the country with a few mates at great risk to my hearing (flippin' 'eck they were LOUD!) in the 80's NWOBHM reboot. Great times. Great days of my golden youth.
Budgie...that name...Mr Shelley, really? what were you thinking! Back in the day they were the band to see. Their song titles...amazing! Tony Bourgh should get the recognition he deserves.
Bought this album twice. Once on vinyl when I was still at school in 1974 and then later on CD so I could listen on CD. Bet the lads wouldn't recognise Butetown now as the gentrified Cardiff Bay area.
Bloody hell, I love this band, from the proto grunge of the first two albums, to the classic era epics like this, Parents and Zoom Club etc to the hard rocking funk of "If I were Brittania...." and "Impeckable". Awesome. Black Sabbath + Little Feat = Budgie
This album is truly a masterpiece. I can think of countless rock albums afforded this label, with many skippable tracks. This album however is superb from front to back
Geddy Lee of RUSH cited these guys as a major influence on their sound and this is one of many songs that really shows where RUSH got the sound they became so famous for....
I love this fucking band!!! My favorite i never had one but they are far superior to any current bands..nobody just rocks no frills no bullshit like budgie funk hard rock heavy blue nwobhm what ever you wish to label them it doesn't matter cause they are still the shit..!!!!!!!
What happened? Anyone know why there was a gap in US marketing, radio play, gigs (including not limited to band turnover) I was told " this was an export from Wales) Always thought they should have headlined in the states .I have my own suspicions but don't want to create conspiracy theories.
@@angiesan2838 it's because they did not take themselves or the music seriously enough to want the international stardom and the things that go along with it. They shunned superstar status of bands like Zeppelin and Sabbath along with the drugs and dark lyrics. They didn't promote the band to those levels and neither did the record company. Burke Shelley had said things like this in the past, anyway.
Lyrics You've got your feelings And your old fashioned feelings About the world and its ways No retribution no simple solution I think we're caught in a maze And all that plunder And that feeling down under It tends to gnaw at you We're in the grip it's a total eclipse And the tyre fitter's got you Now let me explain this feeling of pain Comes from the man at the top His grip is so tight, his political might The tyrefitter will not stop He's bleeding your brain He'll drive you insane Nobody is making a move He'll give you a pen, but he's got him his gun Yeah the tyre man is oh so shrewd I'm licking my wounds and I'm mending my bones And catching the wind out of town We're all in the grip of the tyrefitters hand And it's doing me some harm We're running away and it just ain't the way You gotta get it into yourself Watch what we do, yeah we gotta make do And hide it away on a shelf
this must be one of the best heavy metal songs ever
Much underrated band
RIP Burke Shelley. You 've always been a legend to my ears!

Burke was a lovely man.
I love how they go from blusey, to psychedelic proto-heavy metal, then throw in some funky stuff. It's so delicious to hear.
That is what was so great about 70s, heavy bands. No fear, and the studios let them experiment.
Well said Mate. RIP Burke
We need more Budgie fans
In for the kill.... First and last budgie album. Hard to find these days
Burke and Bourge were Budgie, in the same way Lennon and McArtney were the Beatles. Williams was a seamless replacement for Phillips. I can't blame Bourge for bowing out. R.I.P. Burke Shelley! Thank you so much for decades of classic material sir. You will be sorely missed.

Budgie - The most underrated band in the rock history !
indeed!
100%
Saw them a good few times back in the day. Small band big sound XXX
Saw them every time, they played in my hometown of San Antonio.
La Semana Allegra! And every other concert, they played!

Genuinely. I own this record on vinyl. Blew my mind when I first heard it.
Un underrated group.........I like the sound of Budgie......Are they still playing now in 2023?RIP, Burke Shelley.........
I can never go to the tyre repair shop without thinking of this band.

Yup. Everytime

The riff, the bass, the pure simplicity of the complexity. Genius. Thanks Burke. Live on chap.

At least he left us a great body of work that'll never die🤟🤟🤟
Budgie is resposible for some of the coolest riffs. Breadfan is not the only one! This song is fantastic!
i love playing this on guitar and drums
Great album art work on all albums
And, Zoom Club! That's always been a favorite of mine!
Saw them 3 times at Plymouth Guildhall. Seen a lot of top bands in my time and these guys are up there with the best
In the 1982 during my teens hood...i like Budgie...even Budgie was not so well known enough such as Led Zeppelin & Deep Purple. Jakarta Indonesia 1982.
I don't understand why Budgie weren't as big as Zepp or Sabbath, they were every bit as good if not better.
What an awesome classic ! Together with "breadfan" & baby please don`t go" this tune is immortal in my ears and soul !

Congratulations, Budgie! Like you a lot......Your sound is like a swedish dish called klappgröt.......God bless you!
The riffs in this song are some of the very best...

This is one of the best album ever imo, I've been a huge fan since the 70's.
First heard this band back in 1976. A boyfriend had a kick ass stereo with turntable and monster speakers. He played Budgie a lot. I was hooked instantly.
Love the cover art by Roger Dean.
RIP Burke.
The greatest band that no one heard of.
Quite right - unbelievable considering some of the shite that sold millions.
Man that riff in between the verses is fucking heavy!!! especially with the bass
I am 60. Heard these sounds 30 years ago. Still amazing.
I am old & I am more than my share of cynical but I just realized there is a group of people I actually feel sorry for on this God-forsaken rock - People who have never heard of Budgie...
I am glad I discovered them in 1972.
Fuck everyone else

Some of us didn't want to admit to liking Budgie till they supported OZZY/BLIZZARD OF OZ 1980 Glasgow Apollo

Yes a happy chap i am too, having got this, In For the Kill and Bandolier in the late 70s. certainly up with the really famous bands.

Budgie always sounds to me like what later Rush records would have sounded like if John Rutsey didn't quit.
Great bass playing from Burke Shelley on a very heavy track.
Acknowledge the guitar" Gibson SG
@@williamleyva4956 He was talking about the bass, Burke played a Fender

I was counting the awesome riffage for a FB group post and came up with at least 8. That's more than Zep or Sabbath in one song!
The outro hooked me in a record store in Seattle, circa 1990-91. Unreal.
My first girlfriend cheated on me with a Tyrefitter! What a betrayal as a Budgie fan back then in the 1970s! Loved the irony!
This bass rocks
This is THE Budgie contribution. Be humbled, and slide into the groove. It's a wave, and you? You can ride, crash, or observe.
Ride the groove man
23 now first heard this band when I was 18 n wow they still sound great after all those years
Very good album ,still got it

About the world and its ways
No retribution no simple solution
I think we're caught in a maze
And all that plunder
And that feeling down under
It tends to gnaw at you
We're in the grip it's a total eclipse
And the tyre fitter's got you
Now let me explain this feeling of pain
Comes from the man at the top
His grip is so tight, his political might
The tyrefitter will not stop
He's bleeding your brain
He'll drive you insane
Nobody is making a move
He'll give you a pen, but he's got him his gun
Yeah the tyre man is oh so shrewd
I'm licking my wounds and I'm mending my bones
And catching the wind out of town
We're all in the grip of the tyrefitters hand
And it's doing me some harm
We're running away and it just ain't the way
You gotta get it into yourself
Watch what we do, yeah we gotta make do
