problem is that people just milked so much out of them that it kind of lost the original meaning, like when u search abt liminal spaces u often see a random instagrammer wanting to show themselves in a liminal space ruining the whole composition. when people add stuff it lose the liminal feeling and maybe this happens because the general population really hate the emptiness and want to fill with something.
also many liminal spaces are from either europe or USA and theres little explorations of countries outside of this, here in brazil theres lots of landscapes but almost nobody takes pictures of these liminal spaces to share online. i myself am someone that always take a picture whenever i got the chance and maybe i could share with u somewhere so u can talk abt some places here and in other countries.

So long as there are fresh ideas/art out there, I'm always down for more. Much like Vaporwave, I haven't tired of it one bit; going on 10 years now (or thereabouts) -- Great upload.

I forget when I first started hearing vaporwave. But I think it's still relatively new. But also my sense of time has been altered I think due to age and now mostly being able to kind of remember loose feelings and relative roundabout times if not exact years and dates. Unless I wrote something down for that particular date or can find something else as a marker to help me place it.
I think i sort of recall coming across Vaporwave sometime between 2018/2019 and 2020. Also I think I looked into something called Lazerhawk that I think someone told me about back in 2017.

I wouldn't say people are tired of it but the initial boom in 2021/2022 has definitely passed. I'd say if anything it's having a little bit of a comeback. I think a lot of people got kinda burned out of it for a couple years just because of all the junk and bad horror crap, but I think it'll kinda persist as its own ongoing kinda niche thing with its fans sharing and experiencing art, including its various other facets like weirdcore and yeah i guess even the horror stuff. It's just a consistently cozy thing to come back to when you can find the right things.
Not all styles and subjects are for everyone of course, and it's also not reasonable for someone to have the same interest all the time. it may come in and out, maybe just different depending on the day/time/mood/whatever.
I find a modern pattern with liminal spaces over the past year or so is a heavy lean in to the "nostalgic", which I dunno, just isn't very much the right feeling for me. It's always going to be someone else's home or bedroom or school or whatever. The best ones were the ones where it is almost kinda generic enough that it's more in to that territory of "a bit weird or off", or even is just weird or off in some way such that you take a moment to notice it because something isn't quite right. Obviously there's nothing wrong with the purely nostalgic side of it, but I'm just not a very nostalgic person, so it's not for me, so it would be nice to more easily find other things. I can appreciate style and architecture from a previous time not because it's from that time, but because there is something notably different or strange about it.
Overall, I think it's just such a fundamental part of our experience on some level to have some feeling about an unusual place or a familiar place in an unusual state or just a place with some kind of unique character to it that gives it a particular feeling that I think this whole thing will probably be around for a long time to some degree, even if it's defined in some different way. It's just become more mainstream that some kind of acknowledgement of this phenomenon is made.
Also a few weeks ago i was listening to slowed down mystery meat abstract map too haha.

This video was amazing! Great analysis, I basically feel the same way about liminal spaces as of now. One thing that you did make me realize is that actively seeking out liminal spaces makes them lose some of their charm, and this is especially true for me since I used to run a liminal space blog type thing. I find that the problem with cyberpunk is that it's used too much in a broad sense. Most people when talking about it, refer to it as if it's some kind of aesthetic. When in reality, cyberpunk is a genre which spawned from literature, much like fantasy (Books like Neuromancer are an example of this). With its contemporary popularity, coming mainly out of Hollywood with movies like Blade Runner and in our current day with as you mentioned, 2077, people unfortunately are not accurately educated with what cyberpunk really is.

think another reason why liminal spaces have been falling out of fashion lately is because of that same nostalgia you mentioned, which is so engrained in liminal photography. Many of the places in the infamous liminal space images are no longer something that most of the people seeing them can consider nostalgic. Shopping malls, playgrounds, hotels, and et cetera look a lot different nowadays than what they did ten or twenty years ago. Asking people of ages 15-30 what kind of rugs they remember from their childhood, wallpapers or even the type of phone camera they used to take images with with produce widely different results, and they're the demographic that uses the internet the most. It's something I've struggled with when looking for liminal spaces on the internet, because the time and place most of this liminal/dream spaces/dreamcore genre is not something I got to experience. We never had arcades here, or ice cream trucks or family diners with mascots here, so liminal images of those are just... not liminal to me. That "places where you've been before/saw in your dreams" part of them is just not there. And I think that's something that's going to be even more evident as time passes and more people who belong to younger generations take over the internet (lol). But I doubt it will make the genra die out. I love taking pictures of empty places I remember from my childhood and each day I see more and more "oddly familiar places you've seen in your dreams [soviet version]" popping up. I'm projecting, obviously, and this is likely not as big of a deal as I'm making it, but I wanted to try and share my thoughts regardless. What's I'm trying to say is: adapt, improvise, overcome.

I like the definition of something that is no more and never actually was. The need to find feelings organically, including the feeling of liminality, is a great argument. I have been photo blogging abandoned locations since 2010. There is no question that the vibe existed before lock-downs, but also no question that they are more popular now than before. I think in terms of oversaturation, the main thing is that people automatically try to distance themselves from the mainstream when it comes to art. Right now, liminality is the main stream. I wonder how we will feel when the interest crest, and we are once again "weird" for enjoying the lightly creepy emptiness. My guess is it will feel refreshing.

Liminal spaces, in my opinion, were always a warning of the fragility of time. Time never stops for anything, it just simply moves forward. In the case of liminal spaces, they were caught by circumstances, left behind by time to rot, becoming symbols for something lost. The point of looking to the past is being able to reflect, hopefully using their lessons to better the present and future. Sticking to the past leaves a person stagnant to what lies in front of them, as well as beyond them. Liminal spaces captured a child-like wonder in many of us because it reminded us of a past long gone. The over-saturation of liminal spaces has and always will taint that wonder. It loses that wonder once held, reducing it to nothing more than grainy images that are somewhat creepy. As transitional spaces, liminal spaces were created to be a lens to the past. What lesson, or more-so warning were they trying to tell us?
Things are always changing. One minute, a mall would be filled with life and activity, the next minute the mall is reduced to a husk. Change is apparent throughout liminal spaces, warning us how fragile a moment really could be. When you become oversaturated from liminal spaces, that’s sign that maybe you’ve missed the lesson they were trying to teach you. Instead of peering into a past you’ve never had, use the present to live, and the future to hope. Be in the moment, instead of a moment long past its prime.
In summary, liminal spaces were made to teach viewers about cherishing the moment they have in the present, and the hope they can carry for the future, because eventually, time always catches up to those moments, claiming them as trophies of a decade past, a liminal space.

I agree that it probably is that the surge in popularity of these kinds of photos and aesthetics has become oversaturated and in some ways diluted by lower quality additions to the pool. Some people didn't understand and tried to contribute, some were intentionally exploitative, and just like anything that gets majorly popular these things increase over time until it doesn't feel the same as it initially did. That being said, it's not like it's their fault for so many people falling out of love with the genre, like you said exposure slowly drains the excitement from things. Either way, I still like these kinds of images cool and they're nice to see every once in a while. Hope life has been treating you well! Peace :)

What brings up new interest in liminal spaces is discovering new and unique ones, especially in unexpected places. And taking a break and getting into it again after a while definitely helps in keeping up the interest, liminality is a feeling after all that can be evoked by many different and unexpected places.

What made it special for me was that liminal spaces was the embodiment of a memory and the reality of what happened if you went back.. that being nothing. It was the obscurity that made the feel of liminal spaces not the well versed lore and law added nowadays. Id be more scared being a dimension whose laws i dont know.

Ever since the pandemic happened and the backrooms were spawned into the realm of fiction I've had a fascination with the concept of being completely alone in an endless maze of familiarity. With social anxiety and no friends I could visit in the real world the loneliness I felt was sort of comfortable when paired with the idea of the Liminal, the concept of Kenopsia. Four years later and I feel I am still trapped in the fictional world of a time long past, and a time yet to come. It's hard to connect with another person on an emotional level because I'm so used to feeling numb and distant, so I like to build empty worlds designed for people, but lacking people. It's a bittersweet endeavor to have only myself to talk to, to understand, in these worlds. I have become a ghost in my own machine. Stay dreaming, the real world isn't ready for you. ✨

I don't have or ever believe I'll get burnout from it...but that's why I say you can't FORCE a Liminal Space to pop out of nowhere. It takes me a while to notice one. Not incredibly relevant, but I'm a fan of Magic: The Gathering and they have an upcoming expansion based on "modern horror". In some of the super duper ridiculously early previews, there have been one or two landscapes that are almost liminal adjacent. A huge empty room with marble floors, all the furniture, windows, and doors covered in heavy white drapes, a vast forest with trees whose branches intertwine into door frames that somehow lead to other rooms, inexplicable indoor pools in the middle of hallways, those kinds of things. I'm honestly digging the whole aesthetic of the set and want to get the landscapes from it just to have and look at. It might say something though that media giants like Hasbro are now trying to take something as abstract and community based as liminal space art and put it on trading cards.

Mostly just not having them come up as often in recommendations and gmod workshop has very few atmospheric maps since at least a year (though many by shortnamesalex have been pretty good if a bit small). I've consistently been watching "liminal AI" when they'd upload but not much more, but nowadays you have people feeding the images in to generative video AIs and yeah yeah i know AI is killing art and all that, but given the right training it does seem to do exceptionally well at its own flavor of liminal spaces that don't replace human artists and photography in this case. But in general i've been pretty out of it compared to a couple years ago. I'm not sick of it, and I hope it becomes a healthy genre of art again so I can find more joy in it.

It feels like so many people ignore the most important part of liminal spaces, the fact they have to be transitional. I see so many that just aren't transitional spaces.
It also feels like people make them out to be far more philosophical than they are.

    • @Shookey
      @Shookey  3 місяці тому

@@voidsludge1254 I find that liminal spaces are inherently philosophical considering they're based on the concept of liminality. Not to mention the fact that to a certain extent transition can be considered subjective. A hotel maybe transitional to its patrons and guests but not to someone that works there. Same goes for students in a school vs faculty. Staying at a relatives house, going to a water park. For some these are places of transition. It doesn't always have to be, for example, a hallway staircase. Which would act as a liminality in pure essence.

I think i still sort of like them. But I don't think i've come across them a while in my personal instagram algorithm. Usually the place where I see them in my for you page is via one of those 90s/80s core pages or places that say liminal something. And I think all the time the images of those empty creepy peaceful spaces of those eras always have that one song...You know the one? I can't recall the title. I never bothered to look it up. 😅But hope you know the one I mean.
I kind of assume this song just became the default social code/meme for whenever you wanted to refer that something was a liminal space or some kind of cozy late 80s early 90s core thing meant to evoke a sense of nostalgia.
    wait, I FOUND IT!
    it was called:
    scizzie - aquatic ambience
this was the song for a majority of the nostalgia 80s/90s liminal space core videos that I assumed were the main standard for that sort of genre.

We've more or less heard this for years, now. Liminal spaces work when you happen upon them organically. When you're at the point where your main creative output is a variation of a variation of a variation of a subtype, except YOUR version has YOUR idea of a creepy monster stuffed into it; that's really not liminal at all, anymore. It's left liminality and it's slipped into standard Horror, or general-purpose worldbuilding.
Consider Control and its main locale, The Oldest House. I've heard the place being called liminal, but the fact is it isn't. There isn't a single place on Earth that looks exactly like The Oldest House - especially not in Manhattan, where its containing building is said to be located. It has elements we'd recognize from the real world - Brutalist design, sterile Mid-Century corporate or institutional design - but assembled in a way that doesn't even try to approach Reality as we know it.
Real liminal spaces always have the sense that they're just a step away from being real - or once WERE real at some other point in time. Levels in the Backrooms that lean on urban or suburban settings, or on stretches of open countryside, are a lot more convincing and properly liminal than, say, levels that take schoolyard aesthetics, flip a switch and then suggest that Something Out There Wants to Kill You.
Simply put, we've long since left liminality behind and now have several creators that basically lean quite hard into what I'll call Blender Porn. They make really impressive videos and co-opting the trend is going to give them one heck of a VFX portfolio - but their stuff is hardly liminal at all, anymore.

7:21 (...it felt kind of wrong)
I kind of felt the opposite with the reduction of people. For me it felt really peaceful and relaxing for once. Honestly, I’ve been burnt out of spaces for a good bit. I think it’s a mixture of over-saturation and the overall repetition. Ive seen a lot of photos that, after a while, I think it’s just not worth it anymore. They just don’t feel the same way because of how much I’ve already seen, and it sucks because I like this community, but I just don’t feel anything looking at liminal spaces anymore. It’s 100% reasonable to see how I am “not a true liminal spacer if I cant enjoy liminal space images,” but theres no point. I cant smoke a pipe thats been painted on a canvas.
