My very first pen was the Waterman Phileas, gifted to me in 1989 by the physician I worked for. I still have
this pen in my collection. I did purchase a med. nib for it about 8-9 yrs ago from Waterman, In 1989 the
cost for my Phileas was $69. The vintage Waterman Phileas is not the same model as the Kultur.

That is a lot of money in '89 for a phileas. I bought mine from a Hallmark store in '98 for $38.00 and it came with a converter.

Hello Pastor James. Thanks for this wonderful review. I had a blue Waterman Phileas ballpoint 15 years ago. One could pick them up at any office supplies stores a decade ago, but not anymore. This pen seems great [snap cap, writes smooth, great price]. I'd love to own this pen.

This is an interesting pen! First I bought a Kultur version like in the review off of Amazon, also with fine nib, and the nib was a real stinker. Flow was good but the nib was just plain scratchy (I checked the tines and that wasn't the issue). Then I bought an older original Phileas with medium nib from Penrealm and asked Kirk to tune the nib before shipping. It ended up being one of the smoothest and best writers in my collection!

First, thanks to the viewer who lent you the pen for review, which I liked, as usual. I came across this pen in Amazon a couple of years ago and bought it, a very nice clear demonstrator. It looks and writes really nice but I have never used again after the first time. I can’t say why, I just prefer other pens in my collection. If other people have felt the same, maybe that’s the reason it was discontinued.

Glad you mentioned the “upscale” Phileas in passing. Esthetically, it’s a much nicer pen than the Kultur, but does as you said use the same nib and is the same overall shape. I have one in the blue marble finish and love it. Looking forward to your other Waterman reviews coming up. Thank you.

I was able to pick up three or four of the standard Phileas marble finish on a close out table at Office Max. That was in maybe 2003 or 3004. They were in a large kit-type presentation box. With several cartridges in two colors. Get this…marked down to $24.99! Love this pen in med nib and it writes smooth as “buttah!” Still have them and the blue is inked with kon-peki…my favorite!

Cool that you brought back the old debate about the Kultur being a Phileas or not, it think Waterman purposely never named these pens in their packaging 🤣
As for me, the Kultur (transparent blue, F-not-so-F nib) was my very first FP back in the 2000s and thanks to my hero Matt Armstrong also the first nib I dared to adjust, I still have that pen to this day, it was a gift from my sister and it came originally in a translucent blue plastic package along with the rollerball version which was coated in a soft rubber that got ruined by time so I sanded it away from the pen 5 or 6 years ago turning it into a translucent blue but a lot brighter than the FP, I still have both pens and the package. I also have another FP that I bought in France back in 2004 still in its blister, maybe one day I'll open it... Or maybe not... Who knows?

I have two Waterman Graduate Allure pens (one chrome, one pastel blue), two Phileas Kultur pens (one dark blue, one black), and a much more recently acquired Waterman Hemisphere (chrome fingerprint magnet!). As is my usual complaint, none of them were offered in an extra-fine nib (that I could find) and the fine nibs just aren't as fine as I would prefer, so I end up not using them often. They work marvelously for what they are. Very smooth writers out of the box! They can tend toward a little dry-out if not used frequently and regularly, but a quick dip in some water usually solves that with no issue. Author Stephen King, incidentally, recommends the Hemisphere!

A Phileas is not a Kultur, nor is a Kultur a Phileas. The Kultur was originally intended as the demonstrator for the Phileas, but was later marketed only in Europe to students. It found it's way to the American market even later on, late "90's".

Hmm… that’s an interesting pen. I like pens on the cheaper end so it’s a shame this one has been discontinued. Waterman raises a sore point with me because I dropped my precious Carene the other night. My mind was on other things while I was filling it and it hit the floor nib first. I was once observing a trial and the magistrate said to the defendant “never drive a car when you’re in a angry mood.” Maybe the same applies when you re-fill a fountain pen? Only do it when you’re in a focussed frame of mind.

I actually cringe when I hear the Kultur referred to as a Phileas since they are definitely two different pens, two different quality levels, and two different price points. I have a lot of both Kultur and Phileas pens. The Phileas was my first real fountain pen and was my ONLY fountain pen for about 20 years. I have a drawer full of them. The Phileas is definitely a better quality pen. I have heard claims that the nib is the same, but I have found that the Phileas nibs perform much better than the Kulturs I have encountered. The Phileas was a great workhorse pen. From my experience, I would pass on a Kultur and upgrade to a Phileas. I have them in fine, medium, and stub nibs. The Phileas along with the Edson are two of the best of Waterman production from the 1990s.

Thank you for another very good pen review. The Kulture and the Phileas are two distinct models. Your pen is a Kulture but not a Phileas. The Phileas has a brass insert in the barrel, hence the confusion about the cartridge converters.

A Phileas is not a Kutur! The Phileas is similar to the Kultur, but the material and construction marks the differences. The Kultur was marketed to the European secondary & university student genre. They were never marketed to the American market. The Phileas is a more deluxe model of the same design, which was marketed for America, as well as other world markets. Most of the Kulturs that were originally sent to America, were only for demonstration purposes. That is where I saw my first Kultar in demonstration. And I was sold, and bought my first Phileas in blue marbel acrylic with a gold fine nib, on sale for $39.99 + tx Perl Paints & Artists Supplyers Manhattan NYC! Circa 1992, I think. No one was selling Kultars. But as things go, buyers found ways to obtain the more affordable version of the original. Both write wonderfully, unfortunately these Waterman models are dry-out specials, just leave them unused for a few days, and they'll hard start, skip, or just won't write! I am not just talking, I own 3 Phileas' (not 6) one was lost and 2 were apparently given away, 7 Kuturs (3 were given away awhile ago), & 1 Chrome Gradute, 1 black Allure, 2 opaque student model(?) Allures, and 1 clear yellow Demonstrater Allure. I just thought that honesty was still the best policy; thats the reason for the edit. Since my earlier fountain pen days, I've discovered other brands which write just as well, if not sometimes better, but don't dry-out as easily. So most of my Watermans are collector's items of sentiment, rather than being a useful stable. But occasionally I'll ink-up some of them for a sentimental journey. Great video, that's brother. God speed.

The other 2 are yellow & orange, and they are clear. They are built just like The Graduate/Allure models, just all plastic. The nibs are simply WAY AWESOME, but the plastic is almost cheesey & brittle. I'd be glad to send pics to your email. Is that okay?

The converter may depend on the exact Waterman. I can put int'l cartridges and converters in my Graduate and in this Kultur.
