- " Built in 1610 following on Act introduced by King James I, which stated that all counties had to have their own ‘House of Correction’; Shepton Mallet was the oldest working prison in the United Kingdom up until its closure at the end of March 2013
The prison has a long history of death sentences being carried out under methods including HDQ, hanged and by firing squad. The Hanging room which still exists, though has been used as office space for many years. Following the Monmouth Rebellion of 1642-1685 at least 12 Shepton men were HDQ for having sympathised with the rebels, their bowels were burned and their heads placed on poles around the town.
The last death sentence at Shepton Prison occurred in 1945 under military use. The last civilian hanged there was John Lincoln in 1926, for fatally shooting 25 year old Edward Richards in Trowbridge on 24th December 1925. The list of executioners used included Thomas and Albert Pierrepoint. The gallows were removed in 1967 after the return of the prison to civilian use in 1966."
I’ve just been here and it’s not cold in there but it’s very interesting I walked in a room and felt as though I wasn’t alone definitely worth doing a self guided tour
I live 5 minutes from this prison just dawn the road. Iv been in there twice but never again. When I went in I was feeling great Every time I came out I was feeling really sick and bad headaches and u can feel your not alone in there was amazing to see it but I will not go in side that prison again. U can feel bad vibs in there. But great experience
nothing generic or etc about it. i live about 10 min away and its one of my fav places
The kitchens had a major renovation taking months and costing thousands just before they decided to close it. £100s of thousands
I have been there and I have had my sleeve pulled and I got scratched but its probably due to my family history with the prison its self.
Love to go again, really enjoyed.😊
The Orange band guided tours are good also did a ghost tour & we heard noises in the hospital wing
Michael Portilo is on Channel 5 right now with his 'Hidden History of Britain' series in this very place. I've paused it just to write this...LOL!
Anyone here from Paranormal Lockdown? Just me... Okay.

Theres a debate goin on as to what this building is gonna be turned into..o.a.p's home is one idea...personally i would turn it into a prison
I had the pleasure of going to The mallet for a little time, what a shithole, glad it’s shut down ,as for ghosts cobblers, but I will admit it had a sense of foreboding.I was ghosted out of Exeter prison here, gutted. But I did get back to Exeter, but that is another adventure, maybe if anyone is interested let me know, foot note,I escaped from Exeter.
U can visit it now and even the govt also allowing the people who are interested in
