If the number of times I failed this mission is to be any judge... this is the hardest mission in the entire game. man this took me ages to beat as a kid
04:45 I did on the old model basic game. It was agony. With cockpit being offset you had to fly very weirdly and still hit things and in the narrow dark tunnels with the pipes, you can only fit down with one orientation as there are scaffolds that you hit if you enter the pipes wrong. Which, dueojg the escape having to do at speed is very stressful. Took me hours and many repeated attempts.
These were some of the best space combat sims ever. I played my way through every mission from every game in the series on my hot rod 386 33Mhz, and I did it with a ball mouse for a controller. That was my first computer that had a hard drive, 250mb! Remember how these games came on dozen or so 3.5" floppy disks?
I started with a pirated floppy discs I think :-) And ball mouse too - had to move it over the whole table :-) But then, I purchased Collector CD versions :-) And then X-Wing vs TIE and X-Wing Alliance :-) Those required joystick to start and it was such an improvement to the mouse :-)
@@talaniel I started with a pirated copy of X-Wing as well... with the mouse too. Then I got the B-Wing expansion for Christmas, which didn't work with the pirated copy I had... the next day dad got me an official copy of the game, and a CH Flightstick Pro... I think mainly because the mouse was *very* loud during combat.
I really wish they'd have just replicated the run from the films rather that throwing all that extra crap in there (like space troopers with the E-Web).
I spent a lot of hours trying to do this mission back then. And when I finally made it to the reactor, my version of the game had a bug that made fhe tunnel disappear and dropping you into oblivion, so I never made it until months later where I got my hands on the patch to fix the game.
Yup, I played this as a kid, so with the original version. Absolutely maddening. I'm sure I didn't do it as fast as this run though, in fact I think I kicked shield recharge to the max and only had a speed of 75 or so.
I did it many years ago. I almost did it like in 2nd attempt then I did like 40+ attempts after that before success. Honestly cant even remember, all I remember is skull and bones face I had after failing for the millionth time. I think I did it around 110 speed, altho when you come back you have to run it faster or the explosion will get ya! Only played original version. Run it on max speed for extra fun! Something like 140+ would be kwaazy.
Thanks for this series, I’ve really enjoyed watching you play whilst I’m living in Japan as I don’t have access to my gaming pc to try out the latest mod updates. Is there any word when this new Death Star II mission update will be released?
Thank you for watching! ;) You can play the upgraded version on a laptop. you just might have to disable anti-aliasing and some of the bloom... and you can control it with either a mouse or an Xbox controller! So don''t despair.
We're still in final testing stages and putting the package together, so there's no fixed release date yet, but I'd say you can expect something soon! Keep an eye on xwaupgrade.com
True. Then again, the game came out in 1999, 23 years ago, computers back then weren't strong enough for a faster speed... also, the game was locked to 24 fps back then... So some cutting of slack might be in order.
@@Calmputer Maybe you're right about back then, but even today's Star Wars games have no sense of speed, because you can fly at WW1 or WW2 airplane speeds, and get away with it. I think that higher speeds would require some kind of automatic collision avoidance system, but this takes away control from the player, which is bad. I wonder how F-16 ground obstacle avoidance pod handles it, and if some of it could be incorporated into a Star Wars game.
@@wheelwrightpl9429 You would. I remember Star Trek invasion that has a sequence like this with a borg cube. Turns out warping through hallways is a terrible idea, but gave that sense of speed.
Finally completed Hard Tour of Duty in XWA. Finished at rank General w/ scores 121164 while at Ace 1st Level & having Kalidor Crescent at Silver Talon.
@@Calmputer Thank you. I started encountering problems in Joining Rebellion Training & Battle 1 was a painful experience already. When playing in hard mode, you need to expect all of your teammates will be gone quickly and leaving you alone to complete the mission. I just uploaded all my missions except Death Star Tunnels. There were a few (around 6-10) that must play in medium. I forgot some of them. If you see the mission named with "M" at the end of mission number, that's medium. ua-cam.com/play/PL1Pg9jeTklodq4j86A2LhRX167xPZk43G.html
Wow! Did you actually complete the tunnel run in one go? I spent like a week doing it when I was a kid and ended up having to give myself invulnerability in order to beat it the first time! Did you say the falcon used to be bigger in the unmodded game?
The run itself is in one take. but there's a cut between the blue briefing screen and the start of the mission... as I failed a LOT between the intro and the final run. it also took a few successful runs before I was happy with the commentary ;) I'm thinking of making a montage of all the failed runs... just the "oh Shi-BOOM" takes. The unmodded falcon is about the size of a B-Wing. so the XWAU team first doubled its size to be accurate. eventually they opted to decrease the size of most fighters instead.
the current plan is go through TIE Fighter: Reimagined (TFTC)... but Waylon just released X-Wing Conversion version 5 as well (also contains the Rebel story missions from XvT Balance of Power). It's a great time to be a fan of the old X-Wing games, that's for sure!

22years old, holy shit!
I managed to do the run with the old model. It was so f**king difficult. Took so many attempts 😭

I can't imagine the frustration and sheer tenacity involved in doing that.

those damn containers!
Got it in the first run back then.
I got PTS from it, though.
I dont at all remember the part with the trooper units. Mustve missed it in the dozen playthroughs I've made.
They weren't as deadly in the original game, I think... Something about playing the game on modern computers messes things up a little bit.
