  • Removing the clutch pack from an Oilhead. These clutch screws are to be torqued to 12 nm. That isn't much and there is very little spring tension under this clutch so there is no reason to turn each screw 1/4 turn at a time. This was filmed during the installation of the modified clutch disc on a 2002 R1150RT with 22,000 miles on it. Performed at Affordable Beemer Services LLC Manchester, NH 03102-1126

I'd guess that you'll need to replace #357. Remove the cover from the engine, press out the seal and press in the new seal. Once that cover is off you can see if the seal behind it is leaking. Good luck, Chris

Outrageous! The 1100 doesn't need the modified disc so at the worst you need a complete clutch pack ($500). Labor is 10 hours = $900+/- depending on the shops labor rate.

Great video, as always. I was selling my 1999. R 1100 S but I opted to keep it. My back was not so bad as it looks like. Anyway. You seem to work on electricity on these bikes. Is there possibility to make some video about that. (or I'm missing something) In any case. Very informative, and down to earth videos. I particularly like swearing. Remind me of me, working on my bike.

While the splines can strip in the K1200RS/ K1200LT series bikes it is not as common as the R1150 series failures.

Hi, sorry if I disturbing you, I'm "new" to the motorcycle world (didn't ride for more than 25 years). Now I had 2004 R1150 RT-P with 65K miles on it - the bike is running good, but! I just realize that my clutch reservoir was too full of liquid. As I understand - it is the symptom of waring the clutch? When it should be done? How long it could be run? should I take off some of the fluid? Sorry for so many questions. Sincerely new (old) BMW owner.

Since Oilheads never leak at the rear main seal why replace it? The Oilhead uses TWO rear main seals. The K engines use one seal and even installation of a new one does not mean that the seal will not allow oil to drool all over that nice new clutch disc that you just installed. If it leaks, replace it. If it doesn't leak put an oil-proof Siebenrock clutch disc in it from Beemer Boneyard and ride it.

Will this clutch disc fit the R 1100 RT mate

    • @ChrisR.Harris
      @ChrisR.Harris  4 роки тому

@@robertjeffery4664 No. The 850 / 1100 (except 'S' model) are cable operated and use a different clutch than the later hydraulic clutch equipped bikes.

Are the longer spline clutches still available? Wondering if there is any update on that. My 2004 1150 GS is leaking around the input shaft thus causing the clutch to slip. My only concern is that the input shaft splines have a small amount of wear on them. Thinking about splitting the transmission and i know how to do it but thinking if i can possibly get one of those clutches i won't have to spend 300 on an input shaft, 100 in seals and 50 in bearings, not to mention the headache of heating up cases and freezing bearings. Got to love those German prices. Thanks for any input.

I live in Las Vegas... Where can I buy the modified clutch disc or extended spline gear? Do you sell the brake conversion kit? I have a 2006 R1150RT-P 27k miles, without warning lost power to rear wheel and got the dreaded noise from the transmission. Also how do you get the airbox out of the frame? Any help is appreciated. Keep up the good work, your videos are my service guides. Thank you.

Had BMW price my slipping clutch at $1500 for labor only and they were very hesitant on getting non-oem parts for the work. All together the estimate was between $2500-$3200. What do u think? BMW 1996 R1100gs.

Thank you mr. Harris, for all the concise and helpful videos. I ordered the new clutch plate with extended splines. I plan to change it and lube the splines on my R1150RT, but I would like to remove whole gearbox with FD and wheel attached. Is it more complicated than "traditional" dissasembly? I guess I have to take extra care with the hydraulic clutch line, but are there any "landmines" in waiting?

Hey Chris, would you say do the preventative work (2004 r1150r Rockster) and go the slave or wait until there is a problem? I got the bike with 3K miles and have about 8300 it now. I did valves, oil, TB sync myself but feel this is beyond me probably.

Just had the misfortune of doing a clutch on a 99 K1200rs. But I would never go this far on a job and not do the crankshaft seal which is right behind the clutch. Sure would suck if the bike came back with a leak there.

Hi, I am sorry that you are suffering from BMW's lack of responsibility in correcting this defect. I am the only supplier of the modified clutch disc and these are made to order. The disc is $600. There is no lengthened input shaft other than the 2 prototypes made in Canada. To make more there needed to be a minimum production run of 50 shafts and they would have cost $1000 USD each in 2006. If you go to my website and e-mail me directly I can send you the links to transmission removal. Thanks

  • @ChrisR.Harris

Impossible. Sorry. Dis-assembly is the only way to inspect the input shaft splines. Good luck, Chris

I am looking for a 1150GS to buy, used ofcourse. Could you give me an advice - how can I approximate the condition of the clutch, spline, input shaft - when buying used bike (without disassembling)?

Hello . Just removed my r1150gs gearbox to do the splines. Can you please tell me how much backlash is normal at the output of the gearbox. The shaft has about 30 degrees of rotational free play. It seems a lot to me. Great videos by the way, thanks for posting them. Paul.

Hello Guilherme, The ABS activates at 2.5 miles per hour with a resounding "Clunk -Ker-Chunk" noise. That noise will be heard occasionally during a ride, as well. The input shaft bearing noise will be pronounced when the clutch lever is pulled in. Good Luck, Chris

Do you have a video that shows how to change the seal? If not, can you explain how to change it? Thank you very much, and sorry about my English. Please, be easy with your English.
