Total War is a game about expanding and empire building. It's defined by conquest and invasion. World War 1 was 4 years of sitting in trenches without moving until the americans joined and started using tanks properly. It would be an incredibly unrealistic or boring game.

5:15 The shrapnel of those explosions would kill at least a dozen at that range. Artillery was loaded with high explosive (as opposed to napoleonic era black powder) and would obliterate people so quickly on level terrain. The one hindrance to artillery is unlevel terrain. That's why everyone in the western front was in trenches. There were also tunnels to give even more protection, but tunnels didn't protect against gas. Also, I don't think troops would run away if they're surrounded by barbed wire and explosions, and 100 miles of more trench lines, not to mention bullets that could come from anywhere (like those 100 miles of trench lines; the western front went all the way from switzerland to the north sea). If they run back to the trench, they'll be shot for insubordination or desertion. Really, all they were expected to do when going over the top was charging forward into the enemy trench. If they were too scared, they would go prone and hide - and that sort of thing happened all the time. People would be trapped in no man's land for days at a time and few survived. They would not run in a random direction. Rome simulated that pretty well, in that if a unit was cut off from retreat, it would fight desperately. I think the same goes for WW1 (in this case, the danger is uncertain; since it comes from everyone, units will basically avoid running period), except that there's also shell shock, which would just leave a soldier stunned completely, unable to do anything. Trench assaults would also involve grenades and mortars. Bayonets were less effective in trenches than knives and clubs (trenches were narrow!). In a trench, not everyone can see the enemy, so people wouldn't retreat when others do. Communication would be slower, but communication infrastructure would be important, such as telephone lines and the telegraph, as well as carrier pidgeons. A lot of the warfare is also attrition - snipers shoot anyone that pops out of a trench. Also, airplanes! Airplanes took over the role that cavalry originally occupied, but cavalry were vulnerable in no man's land. So airplanes fulfilled reconaissance duty, and also 'skirmished' with dropping the odd load of bombs (though not too accurately; dive bombings were most accurate, but these required very skilled pilots). There's also stealthy troops. Lone soldiers would have hiding spots made out of dug up tree stumps. Some sniper hides consisted of dead horses. Verdun was a town, so there were also buildings reduced to their foundations. It could look sort of like WW2, only more barren (this is because the same areas came under artillery fire constantly; WW2 was more of a war of maneuver). Cavalry were kept in reserve in case of a breakthrough, which never happened very much in the entire war. Any breakthrough would result in the enemy retreating to a rear trench (and there were I think there were at least several in 1916, before you got to the supply lines), from which they would renew their assault on the forces whom broke through, whilst other enemies still lingered unmolested in other areas of the trench under assault (meaning the ones who broke through were now essentially being flanked; so they would have to either clean out the trench they were in, or continue onwards to the next one - which was basically hopeless, since the enemy who retreated were in comms with the rear trench and now could counter attack). Even in a decent breakthrough, the trench under assault could rarely be occupied long enough for reinforcement against counter attack. At most, troops would advance one or two lines of trench, and only when trenches were really close together (made assault more common and easier; so close trenches were often less defended). The 'lose 1 million men, but gain 2 feet of ground' (or however that quote goes), applies strongly to that sort of case. Artillery would at times, also outrange a trench and hit supplies far in the rear, as well the cavalry reserves. There are photos of horses actually stuck in trees. WW1 was a crazy war. ------- A WW1 total war would not be anything like the other TWs - it's not ancient warfare. It's scary modern war, and it should be like the other games at all. Old players might be disappointed if it's handled honestly. To be fair, ancient war was probably scary too, but WW1 was something entirely different. For the first time, bravery didn't mean squat, only tactics. Everyone became a mere statistic. I think even, several field marshals were killed (y'know, the five star generals, who were supposed to sit far in the rear, in nice accomodations; they actually went out to the front, probably to make a show to troops, and simply met with bad luck).
+shadowant stone There would potentially be a lot more battles. You wouldn't have to send an army to the enemy city - instead you stock up on a certain section of front and decide to plan an assault. Sometimes, you also have to defend when the enemy decides to assault. Some attacks are slow and methodical (eg. tunneling under the enemy trench lines to blow them up from underneath; one such bomb killed 10,000 in the war, by collapsing a hill, I believe... would probably take months though). Recon could be a major factor. Learn a bit about the positions and make up of enemy defences and troops using planes, zeppelins, and the like. Of course, also plenty of tech improvements during the war; so something like portable kodak cameras would improve recon results from planes (eg.). Armies wouldn't really move (other than to reinforce different sections of front and swap out equipment), since the entire campaign itself is basically just the armies facing off on a continuous front the entire time. Then you see how it plays out (though, of course the battle itself would be similar to what I described, I think). If you are the chief of staff of your chosen country, then you'd be able to initiate assaults anywhere nearly all the time. Though, there'd also be planning and strategy ahead of it (too many assaults can confuse the lower officers, making planning and logistics harder or more expensive). Disloyal generals might ignore your plans and try to do their own thing - but the AI of that shouldn't be silly. There were sort of rogue generals in the war that interpreted orders in certain ways to adjust a plan laid out for them in a way that tilted slightly more towards what they wanted to do. Loyalty can be earned by awarding medals to officers, but awarding too many will make them overconfident and more fickle in loyalty. Nation states typically have created the impression that medals must be earned. Alternatively, you could play a lower ranking officer, trying to win batles on your section of front. The assaults that you can plan would be limited to what your superiors choose to afford you (depending on your successes, I suppose). DLC could cover other theaters of the war, such as the eastern front between germany, austro-hungary and russia. The alps between italy and austro-hungary, and colonial africa, arabia and the ottoman empire.

Let me sum up what the comments below me are. "I play first person shooters, and battlefield 1 is so good. And now I know everything about World War I. This is a very unrealistic game, Battlefield one displays WW1 in A much more realistic light. I also like call of duty".
"War....War never changes" that's the truest statement ever made in a video game. Technology may change, weapons may change, but your still killing a man to take that hill to take that ground.
I know. To come back to my reference with the tanks in WW2, even there were battles without tanks. Anyways, the title of that video says: Battle Of Verdun. :)
I like how Apollo actually knows the material he's presenting, many of those famous youtubers out there talk about WW1 saying "yeah the nazis were in ww1" so I respect you. Love your videos too.
I just want to say I absolutely love your attitude. Most people would get upset and say things like "oh that's bs! Wtf! They need to fix this!" about glitches, you just laugh it off and make jokes about it. I absolutely love it.
10 year old me seeing you and Alex the rambler, my two favorite UA-camrs from that time fighting each other was the 10 year old Chris chris version of infinity war
This war is so stupid... -General! The conscripts have arrived. What is your Plan for them? -Send the frontally against the enemy defenses. -Sir that didnt work the last 20 times we tried or the 19 times the enemy Did. -But this time it might work... -of course Sir
Jan Sturm Your right it's. It's not. That's not why they sent waves. It was to overwhelm the other side. They wouldn't only send infantry as well. Artillery bombardments and other things. there's no way to get around or really do anything but rush the other. So what do you propose be a better solution?
For some reason I really love how the artillery shells take Apollo off guard and he has to speak louder to be heard. Kind of a weird thing that really makes the whole thing cooler.
David Frigault Well, it was a battle, however due to the long time it lasted, it is called a campaign. There were many battles on the Somme area, however a campaign is a different thing. This is why it is called the first day of the battle of the Somme, not the Somme Campaign - like Gallipolli is.
The Time you said the soldiers have nerves of steel to even join the war is quite a like actually because some soldiers thought if they join the war they will return home as a hero but nope it was an absolute nightmare because of the new military technology
Yep you are correct Mostly are teens from each country lie their ages so they can enlist in the army. Most of did not return. Some the survivors are scarrred for life because of the war
Last summer I actually went to Verdun. The main hill that those soldiers climbed up, along with the trenches. Nearly everything is still there from the trenches to the structures.
At about 14:30 that was case shot, basically a time fused fragmentation shell that would explode at X number of feet above the ground, dependent on the fuse set by the arty crew, and rain shrapnel down on the defending infantry. It's partially the reason that steel helmets became a thing thanks to large numbers of head injuries.
German Army: Let’s use gray uniforms that will be barely vissible in these muddy and foggy conditions of battlefield to make ourselves less vissible. French: I’m blue da ba dee da ba dae
I think its because its a mod so it follows the way how the og game has its soldiers placed, they wouldn't be able to all get in a trench line unless they spread out in 2 by (alot) or 1 by (way more) groups, so the way it has the little wooden barriers works way better for the way the game was made originally
Man i remember when i have like 9 years and i watched this video, i couldnt stop watching it and saying to me "i want that" maaaaaaaaaan i enjoy so much this mod and your content and even that is like 6 years old i still watch it like all your vids
Yes! Yes! Yes! We need a stand alone WW1 AND WW2 version of Total War. Forget the rest! We want WW1 & WW2! Ive been saying the same for years! Theres so much scope in both these wars for proper games to be made! Love your work on the video & the commentary is spot on! Cheers!

That's pretty incredible... everytime I talk about world war 1 with my buddies they think it was the war with the least amount of bloodshed. it was the most sinister and barbaric war ever fought nothing today can compare to the type of fighting we saw in world War one.
My great great grandfather went into this war in 1917 due to his father being mean to him. Less than a week after he got into battle he was hit by a shell and he lost his arm. His two buddies were killed. They were less than a foot away from him he said.

Annemarie Neuendorf he wasnt talkijg about wars, he was talking wbout how verfun was super long. China vs vietnam was a long war, as it lasted for a millennium
Most of the Hundred Years' War was spent either doing nothing (the war outright stopped and restarted several times) or sending small bands of knights to roam around the countryside burning things to try to disrupt agriculture. The logistics weren't there, either on a tactical or strategic level, to support battles longer than a few hours and campaigns longer than a few months. The sort of prolonged, meat-grinder battles that went on and on and on and on didn't happen before the late 19th century and only really got going in the 20th, where most people were unnecessary for food production and would continue to fight, day in and day out, until they died or became psychiatric basket cases.
The Battle of Verdun produced casualties up to 1994. Several French Soldiers kicked something shiny back then, and it was apparently attached to an artillery piece of some sort. Their remains were scattered miles around. I have some video of the Verdun Battlefield on my UA-cam site.
+Adriel Tovar In principle, yes, there is no software difference. But how well it runs will depend on how good your laptop is. If its not really meant for gaming, it may run terribly/not at all.
"allright men, today we are gonna cross the nomansland, we´re gonna take out that french position" well the best way to translate that to german by using the way the soildiers of this time would talk "Kameraden! Heute werden wir das Niemandsland durchqueren und diese französischen Positionen einnehmen!"
I went to Douamont(A destroyed but still official village near Verdun), and the amount of white crosses I saw there at the cemetery was absolutely insane, I dont have words for it. What was even more terrifying was that most of the crosses didn't have names. They stood for unidentified losses, brothers, sons, fathers and cousins of families that might have never been notified untill they found out that dear Gunther, Pierre, Jaque and Klaus, which they had seen so many months ago, were not going to return.
+Pasan Etternavn The style of warfare during ww1 was brutal. Enough to make men insane in only a few days(This happened in other wars, but ww1 is the most significant).
+Abradolf Lincler That is disturbingly true, seeing dead men littered everywhere in your trench which you would live in for months would make you insane in days and have shell shock in week.
+Pasan Etternavn It was one of the first battles; The battle of Albert where 60,000 British troops shelled the German line, "wiping them out" even though not a single German was killed because of underground bunkers just behind the horseshoe shaped line. The British charged through and wasn't fired on until the last minute. And something in the tens of thousands died in less than 3 minutes, I remember seeing it on the history channel and had to look it back up.
+Pasan Etternavn During the stalemate phase, the Great War was a war of statistics, a matter of who could churn out the most men, artillery and ammunition and use those resources in the most efficient way conceivable. Weighing losses against gains became an exercise of mathematical calculation. Each soldier was merely a number on a paper, a cog in the machine.
More terrible when you realise Verdun was an Artillery battle. 70% or more of the casualties were caused by artillery. The French guns had enfilade on the German attackers and caused huge casualties. The reality of it was that very few of those men would have made it... But its a mod, and a game, and the core engine cant really deal with the kind of warfare that was the reality in WWI.
4:18 Those uniforms the French troops wore were actually a nightmare for them. They didn't conceal the soldiers at all. Countless people died because they still wore cloth hats. When huge chunks of rock and dirt fell down after being thrown up by an artillery shell, they often crushed the troops underneath them. WW1 was terrifying because the technology was advancing faster than the strategy. Hundreds of years worth of tactics and tradition were thrown out the door during the opening months of the war. Horrifying stuff.
+MrZilbon ffl contain half murican french half briton, full african and almost none of them is French at all Thats why i want to join FFL when i turn 25
My grandfathers cousins died there (and some in russia... Ps we are german) I have read letters from them. Pretty sad. They basically had nothing to eat really...
+Janniboy „abcnon“ lp i just only knew that the grandfather of my dad, died in a train by a troop transport to the eastern front when the russians was attacking the train he died by burning, the grandfahter of my mom died in France at the D-Day he was one of the defenders by Ohama beach.
Should do a battle of the Somme. That would be epic since about 60,000 british troops were killed on the first day of the battle due to the germans having well placed machine gun emplacements with great cross fire killzones
+Sam B 2 million men deployed, but 150k casualties on both sides, or something like that. Still a lot, but 2 million dead would have ended the war pretty quickly :P

"I play first person shooters, and battlefield 1 is so good. And now I know everything about World War I. This is a very unrealistic game, Battlefield one displays WW1 in A much more realistic light. I also like call of duty".
Christian Harvey oh, sorry almost forgot sports games because those are good hahah
Mike Forest you sound like a little bitch lmfao 😂😂
Christian Harvey don't send me emojis like that dude, I don't swing that way.
I like how the only defense these kids have is cussing and emojis. Typical.
Brodaviing sorry I din't deliver some erotic bohemian philosophical response. But I noticed the ignoramus comment. So I responded correspondingly .
"War....War never changes" that's the truest statement ever made in a video game. Technology may change, weapons may change, but your still killing a man to take that hill to take that ground.

WW1 without trenches is like WW2 without tanks.
in the beginning of the 1. ww there was a german offence in the west. until it stopped there were not many trenches.
I know. To come back to my reference with the tanks in WW2, even there were battles without tanks. Anyways, the title of that video says: Battle Of Verdun. :)
Trenches were because old generals could not operate with the new technology
I like how Apollo actually knows the material he's presenting, many of those famous youtubers out there talk about WW1 saying "yeah the nazis were in ww1" so I respect you. Love your videos too.

I just want to say I absolutely love your attitude. Most people would get upset and say things like "oh that's bs! Wtf! They need to fix this!" about glitches, you just laugh it off and make jokes about it. I absolutely love it.
With how CA's been acting recently, I bet, if they made a WWI game, you'd have to pay them an extra 20 bucks to play as Germany...
10 year old me seeing you and Alex the rambler, my two favorite UA-camrs from that time fighting each other was the 10 year old Chris chris version of infinity war
A surprise to be sure but a welcome one
This war is so stupid...
-General! The conscripts have arrived. What is your Plan for them?
-Send the frontally against the enemy defenses.
-Sir that didnt work the last 20 times we tried or the 19 times the enemy Did.
-But this time it might work...
-of course Sir
You can't flank when there's no flank...
Saboufor but sending wave After wave of Men to their death, hoping that the enemy MIGHT run out of ammo cant be clever...
Jan Sturm Your right it's. It's not. That's not why they sent waves. It was to overwhelm the other side. They wouldn't only send infantry as well. Artillery bombardments and other things. there's no way to get around or really do anything but rush the other. So what do you propose be a better solution?
Брандон Кёллёр Wouldn't work but good ingenuity.

For some reason I really love how the artillery shells take Apollo off guard and he has to speak louder to be heard. Kind of a weird thing that really makes the whole thing cooler.
Shame there isnt a Verdun map with the castle.
Can you do the Somme next?
Somme people might not like that.
fastllama13 hahahahaha
@fastllama13 you made my day
You mean Fort Douaumont? Because there is a map for that, I think. However the fort doesn't work really well in the map, it's too crowded.
David Frigault Well, it was a battle, however due to the long time it lasted, it is called a campaign. There were many battles on the Somme area, however a campaign is a different thing. This is why it is called the first day of the battle of the Somme, not the Somme Campaign - like Gallipolli is.

Yep you are correct
Mostly are teens from each country lie their ages so they can enlist in the army.
Most of did not return. Some the survivors are scarrred for life because of the war
Last summer I actually went to Verdun. The main hill that those soldiers climbed up, along with the trenches. Nearly everything is still there from the trenches to the structures.
"Ils ne passeront pas!"
My vague understanding of French says this means they will not pass
8:10 ohhhh gawd I felt that soldier’s back snap
right before battlefield 1 reveal trailer
The timing was amazing. That is why this video has more then half a million views lol
+Pixelated Apollo could you make more great war battles
Can u do some ww2 stuff is that possible?
Linknlogs227 Is there a Verdun map in Battlefield 1
There will in the dlc
At about 14:30 that was case shot, basically a time fused fragmentation shell that would explode at X number of feet above the ground, dependent on the fuse set by the arty crew, and rain shrapnel down on the defending infantry. It's partially the reason that steel helmets became a thing thanks to large numbers of head injuries.
Pixelated Apollo yours videos are great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@krinos no
anybody else really wish they had like actual trenches?
Yup.
Literal frenches in the trenches
I think its because its a mod so it follows the way how the og game has its soldiers placed, they wouldn't be able to all get in a trench line unless they spread out in 2 by (alot) or 1 by (way more) groups, so the way it has the little wooden barriers works way better for the way the game was made originally

The English and French had an 100 year war and he thought a 4 year war was long !!!
Annemarie Neuendorf he wasnt talkijg about wars, he was talking wbout how verfun was super long. China vs vietnam was a long war, as it lasted for a millennium
*116 years
Most of the Hundred Years' War was spent either doing nothing (the war outright stopped and restarted several times) or sending small bands of knights to roam around the countryside burning things to try to disrupt agriculture.
A 4 years with nonstop battles and death
At 14 mins: "What IS that - I don't even know what that is".....That's truly classic!
The Battle of Verdun produced casualties up to 1994. Several French Soldiers kicked something shiny back then, and it was apparently attached to an artillery piece of some sort. Their remains were scattered miles around. I have some video of the Verdun Battlefield on my UA-cam site.

Germany: I'm unstoppable
Glitched MG: Are you challenging me?
"allright men, today we are gonna cross the nomansland, we´re gonna take out that french position"
well the best way to translate that to german by using the way the soildiers of this time would talk
"Kameraden! Heute werden wir das Niemandsland durchqueren und diese französischen Positionen einnehmen!"
I am surprised that the french didnt surrender at the sight of germans.
Douamont was a fort my friend
Well that was dark. there's something uniquely awful about ww1, no romanticism. Just death.
There is something special witb it, i really like
+Pasan Etternavn It was one of the first battles; The battle of Albert where 60,000 British troops shelled the German line, "wiping them out" even though not a single German was killed because of underground bunkers just behind the horseshoe shaped line.
Each soldier was merely a number on a paper, a cog in the machine.
i believe one would expect trenches, but that probably wouldnt make for good gameplay
When he said "Alex The Rambler" I was just about to go watch more of Alex The Rambler, ironic momento.
I just do a response to your comment so that way it'll be a bit more at the top

This is a cool mod but you should really film one where you don't outnumber the enemy 2:1.
+hulk hogan What about the Russian one?
