How Japan plans to counter China's military expansion | Interview with Taro Kono

  • A senior Japanese government minister is warning that democracies must respond to China’s massive military expansion. In an exclusive interview with DW’s Richard Walker, Digital Minister and former Foreign & Defense Minister Taro Kono spoke out about China’s military pressure around the disputed Senkaku Islands, which China claims as its own. He also described the deluge of cyber-attacks and disinformation hitting Japan.
Japan is now embarking on its own military expansion as part of a new National Security Strategy, with close coordination with the United States. Kono explained the thinking behind this major transformation for Japan’s traditionally pacifist stance.
DW also confronted Kono about the controversial Chinese social media sensation, TikTok - which is already banned in India and facing growing calls for a ban in the US and other countries.

As the international geopolitical environment becomes increasingly dodgy, we might see more of this type of thoughtful response. The days of empty-headed political creatures schmoozing through interviews might be numbered. This bloke seems both canny and wary. I am a Chinese. Japan killed 30 million Chinese soldiers and civilians in World War II, and killed 30 people in Nanjing. The US military deceived 100000 people in Okinawa to come to the massacre, but they were scared to jump off the cliff. The rape and massacre in Southeast Asia, Japan did not apologize again. All the records of World War II were deleted from the textbooks. So far, they still worship the temples dedicated to the war criminals of World War II, and still smear China in the world, because the people who committed crimes are afraid.
