At Sleepy Lizard Avocado Farm we grow avocado varieties that are enormous. If you are tired of the same old avocado give ours a try.
Also listen to Tom's story about how he abandoned one career for another more risky but fulfilling one.
I came for avocados but left with a life lesson. Thank you😘
thanks Nicolette
❤🔥😲 I totally agree! I think every entrepreneur regardless of gender should hear this inspirational story…. And what a great story it is! It made me realize that the problem with bad sales is not enough passion or creative comprise and accepting No to readily. Thank you! 🥑
😮😅😂
😮😅😂
WAS SAME AS YOU - I was a developer starting in 1988. Did it for a few years and got bored. Opened a small investment company with 10 people. Used my programming and math skills to develop Algorithms to help decide what investments to purchase and when to buy and sell. The company grew to over 1,000 employees worldwide. Sold it and now just enjoying life. Especially gardening and my fruit trees. It's relaxing. Glad you found your way too.
A dream
New slogan for me for 2022...BRING YOUR BIG AVOS.....small ones just wont make it!
After watching this video of yours I first want to congratulate you on the achievement with your prior company. I know understand the reasoning for your expertise. I’m happy for you Tom for I know this being an Avocado grower and a educator in the industry is your calling. Keep up the great work. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you David. I appreciate the encouragement. These are the types of comments I cherish
You are a great storyteller I thoroughly enjoyed your story! Thank you so much for sharing it.
Jmaldy67, thank you for your comment. That means so much to me. Have a great weekend!
@@SleepyLizard You trimmed away the unneeded fats of life, and kept the good healthy ones!! Good man!!
Thanks for sharing story, by the way your English is clear and obvious, happy thanksgiving
Thank you. I try to stay focused and precise. It’s reassuring to have someone notice.
Congratulations on doing what you love and having had the courage to quit a well paid job! I did the same in 2003. Had a well paid government job with amazing benefits in Germany but got tired of the crap going on there. I decided to give it all up and start a completely new life by moving to the United States. It was very scary, but looking back, well worth it. Today I work from home, have a parrot and tortoise rescue and couldn't be happier. To have a tropical fruit tree yard of about 1-2 acres (not as big as yours), is my next dream and I am actively working on it. Not for selling, just for myself and all my animal children. I just love plants so much and fruits. Your big avocados are awesome. I can't wait for my Choquette and Joey to give me some fruits next year.
The company I refer to in this vid is German. I used to travel to Erlangen a few times a year. loved it there.
@@SleepyLizard What you teach your son is more worth than any PHD. Farming is our future. We all need non gmo food, grown on natural soil to stay healthy .
Awesome! He is the lizard king, he can do anything!
alright alright alright alright. 😁
I could tell that you were a sales person before you started your story, all someone has to do is listen to you a few times , it becomes obvious ! GOOD JOB 👍
You are perceptive. And thank you for the compliment!
LOVE!!! That was one fateful Tuesday Oct 31, 1995... GO BIG AVOCADOS!!
no kidding. I could have just let it pass and would have missed the opportunity
Tour videos are fun and a blessing to watch. Hope you have a blessed holiday season.
Same to you Miguel. Enjoy your holidays.
This is a very inspirational video. Thank you very much, Tom. It reminds me when I started to work as a photographer 30 years ago, with all the difficulties that I had to overcome. Thank you. Greetings from Costa Rica. One last word: I really love avocados. Take care.
It sounds like that Job was so stressful and a soul sucker, The Avocado thing is relaxed and peaceful.
Believe it or not I enjoyed the job. There were a lot of great people and experiences and challenges. But yes, the avocado thing is very relaxing and peaceful and I love every day of it.

Damn Tom! That’s a spiel, if I ever heard one! But, damn, I absolutely loved it and without any doubt, I can see why you got that dream Sales Job! I do hope that anyone who listens to this video, really understand your message! You can be anything that you want to be, if you’re willing to work and sacrifice for that goal but you must be willing to put in the work to achieve it! Just wishing for something will not get you there, you must be absolutely committed to it! Love it! Thanks for such an inspirational thoughts on this Thanksgiving Day 2021.
Thanks Doug. I just told a friend about the scotch bonnets and he gave me a recipe for rice. Can’t wait to try it.
@@SleepyLizard That’s great Tom! Well be careful with the pepper, and enjoy the dish that you will make!
Tom, I was a computer programmer at the time you were talking about. Now, at 73, am trying to graft an avocado, literally, the size of what you are showing. Thanks for the talk.

awesome motivational speech Tom. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you L
Very motivational presentation even for these tired old bones. I was going to say, ‘If only I was younger,’ but then I realized having big avocados isn’t just for making career choices. For the past two years I’ve been wrestling with needing to make some life changing decisions and what is missing are those huge Guac Farm avocados. Be seeing you soon.
Brian thanks for the comment and sharing your situation. And yeah, big decisions are not just about career choices.
I am 77.
I suggest that the journey is more important than the destination.
One is never too old to enjoy the journey.
Best to you!

Just got back from PA...another great Christmas with family and friends. Thank you for the compliment. I appreciate it.
You truly are a salesman haha
Great video
Thanks TheVirtus96. I didn't go into all the details but part of the selection process I discussed was a predictive psychological evaluation and my results were in the 99th percentile for sales...like putting a fish in water.
Thank you so much for sharing
You're welcome Kadosh!
Love that story!! So inspiring! You need to mentor our youth many are lacking in persistent and determination sadly.
Barb, Yeah I like to talk to my son and his teammates from his football team. The football players down here in the south give me hope for their future. they are coachable and teachable and understand reward takes hard work and sacrifice. they are going to do great...many of the peers in school however have already been fooled into giving up.
Thanks for the FANTASTIC stories...i also grew two huge avos from pit...we call them avozillas...Andre
that's awesome!
Happy (late) Thanksgiving! An interesting story you have right there being a tech guy in the 90s. Seeing how you really wanted to be a sales person shows the dedication you have for a particular goal, even if that meant sacrificing your current job. I've noticed in school that when students in my current college program are asked what career choice they want, they usually go for the more "high paying" jobs like a lawyer or doctor. Some do it for the pay, others do it because it's what they lived and desired for. As with me, I'm currently picking a career choice that I will enjoy, instead of going for a higher paying career that pays well, but I might not enjoy. I thought that was a interesting story.
Elex, happy Thanksgiving to you too. I'm sure you're having a great long weekend. I plan to do more career oriented material in 2022 and yes, there are many factors that go into choosing a career direction and it's also quite specific to each individual. The trick is to get to know ourselves and make decisions that put us in position to take advantages of our strengths.
Pay was definitely a factor for me and sales can be quite lucrative if you're good at it but most people don't realize wealth is built by keep what you earn, not earning more. I plan to do a vid on that someday too. Talk to you later.
great video mate, very inspirational.
Thanks Shaun
Congrats on your new joyful career🎉🎉🎉🎉
thank you
Wonderful video as always Tom but please update with how you progressed from tech sales to hands on avocado farming. Thanks again for your enlightening videos!🙏🙏🙏
I plan to do more career oriented vids after I hit 100k subscribers. I might be wrong but I feel like I have something to offer in that field
Man, what a great presentation, you sure are a good sales man Mr. Sleepy Lizard!!!!! I have had some Florida Avocados and me and my wife loved them. Great video. I shall look to see if i can order some when i season.

3 things we have in common Tom, I am a VW Bus afficionado, Own a 71 VW Bus, I Love Monroe Avocados and I am a Computer Programmer who would like to retire like now.
I'm surprised the algorithm hasn't linked us up sooner 🤣
Started my own tiny industrial steel contracting biz at 21...didn't even know if there was a market for it.
Never looked back never again on a payroll.
Bo, gutsy move with a huge payoff. I LOVE to hear stories like yours.
@@SleepyLizard Love your story and so well told. Mine didn't seem gutsy at the time, more of an overreaction of impressionable youth thinking the end of economic freedom was near. (thanks Ayn Rand, :D) I had been caring several union "workers" on my shoulders at the underground mine mill I started at from 17. No way I was going to make a career of that even with plenty of upward advancement likely and a challenging interesting environment.
"If free markets work the way they should then I could be making the money of those slackers I was effectively supporting." Worked for me. I learned early to loath unions which was reinforced many times since, but they helped in my 20 yr old choice to go on my own. Easier young then later but never easy.
I remember when you could only buy the big avocados. I lived in Dade county and many homes had those big avocado trees. LOVE those big avocados.
Yep! We’re you in Miami?
@@SleepyLizard I was in North Dade and Ft Lauderdale. In the 60’ss we would go down to Homestead to pick vegetables.

Revealing those who tell us not to take a chance, they fear their own failure to chase their dreams, they aren't looking out for YOU. They know they too should be so bold and your doing it makes it harder for them to pretend.

Ok sale speech was perfect, but how do I get my hands on a few scions to graft those monsters. Do you sale them?

Just purchased a box. I'm also going to grow the seeds.
Erik, I got your order and will be shipping Monday. I try to ship on Mondays so the boxes don't get stuck at the post office over the weekend...especially this time of year with the holiday rush.

Thanks 143, I appreciate it.
Tom, thank you for the excellent video. 👍 How long can you keep an avocado seed once you have eaten the fruit. If I keep an avocado seed for one year and then plant it will it grow?
Zamin. I don’t know the answer to that question. I’ll have to test it
@@SleepyLizard OK, cool. Thank you so much. I will just keep a few in the freezer and them try to grow them down the road.
Hi tom what's kind of soil you have ? And is your trees living on rain or naturally you use water.
The trees are planted in solid limestone rock. there's about an inch of topsoil that's been build up over 30 years of allowing material to fall from the trees and rot over time. We us rain in the rainy season and we pump water from a well every 5th day during the dry season.
Thanks for your interest!
The Big one is that choquette? Tell me about variety avocado u have more detail please
I can't remember if that was a Choquette, it think given the time of year it might have been a really big Monroe. We have Donnie, Simmonds, Catalina, Hall, Choquette, Monroe, and a few other specialty varieties
Wow its very interesting.. Wichh one the most favorite on you
Is this avocado stand alot temperature or not, is it a monro avocado????
I don't remember if that's choquette or monroe but both are cold hardy
You could sell heated toilet seats to Eskimos😀
Seems like something that would bring a lot of value to the Eskimo community. 🥶
Corporate Life is not a healthy life, you won't get time to enjoy the basket of wealth.
Do you sell the scion of the big tree avocado
not right now. Sometimes we do sometimes we don't depends on the season.
Ok thank you
How many months does a grafted avocado bear fruits
36 months
Do you know where I can get a hold of Wilson Popano avocado plant or Scions
I never heard of that one.
@@SleepyLizard Pine Island Nursery has it listed on their avocado viewer but they don't have it, go figure.
These avocados look delicious. It's a shame I can't buy because I live in Bulgaria. And mayyyyybe $40 for 5 avocados is a little too expensive for me, though they're huge. But mainly because where I live.
💪
My avocado tree has been doing terrible these past few weeks. The trunk is wrinkly, the top inch looks black and has lines going down the stem. But today when I got back from school, the tree somehow got way worse in just a few hours. The lower part of the stem is covered in white dots. And these dots are causing black rotting spots. Like literally the entire stem from that spot above can die and I'd have to stomp the tree. But there's more, there are black vertical lines going into the stem, most of the buds have died and there's a noticable discoloration. I usually check the moisture of the soil with my finger, but the soil is always moist, even after waiting for it to dry out.
I know that the soil and the compost are the reason for this disaster. But I haven't found the good soil yet. Currently I'm searching for decomposed granite. I'm going to stop buying these potting mixes which are for "citrus trees", or peat moss with perlite, because these soils have done nothing but bringing me disappointment in the long run.
I'm very sad. But I'm not giving up hope just yet. I know that a tree with no leaves that is dying back quickly and is probably infested and is dying becuase of stem and root rot, is very unlikely to be rescued, but it's still alive. I love that tree so much and it breaks my heart to see it decline. The only reason I grow quite a lot of avocado trees from seed and mangos even, is because of this tree. When I came back from vacation around the summer of 2021, I saw that my first avocado had sprouted for the first time and I was so excited. It was doing amazing in 2022 and in summer of 2023, but it qradually started declining from September onwards, especially after I brought it outdoors for 2-3 weeks and drenched it with a fungicide for prevention. I've lost quite a few younger avocados in the process. But if this avocado dies, I'll be very heartbroken and probably exhausted.
I don't know what to do. the decomposed granite is too hard to find, if I don't find DG, I'll use sand, 100%!!!!!
I love watching your older videos sometimes. I'll have to pray for a miracle and that tree recovers, somehow. Wish me luck!
Aaaaand God bless you!
😭
