    WAS SAME AS YOU - I was a developer starting in 1988. Did it for a few years and got bored. Opened a small investment company with 10 people. Used my programming and math skills to develop Algorithms to help decide what investments to purchase and when to buy and sell. The company grew to over 1,000 employees worldwide. Sold it and now just enjoying life. Especially gardening and my fruit trees. It's relaxing. Glad you found your way too.

    Congratulations on doing what you love and having had the courage to quit a well paid job! I did the same in 2003. Had a well paid government job with amazing benefits in Germany but got tired of the crap going on there. I decided to give it all up and start a completely new life by moving to the United States. It was very scary, but looking back, well worth it. Today I work from home, have a parrot and tortoise rescue and couldn't be happier. To have a tropical fruit tree yard of about 1-2 acres (not as big as yours), is my next dream and I am actively working on it. Not for selling, just for myself and all my animal children. I just love plants so much and fruits. Your big avocados are awesome. I can't wait for my Choquette and Joey to give me some fruits next year.

    Happy (late) Thanksgiving! An interesting story you have right there being a tech guy in the 90s. Seeing how you really wanted to be a sales person shows the dedication you have for a particular goal, even if that meant sacrificing your current job. I've noticed in school that when students in my current college program are asked what career choice they want, they usually go for the more "high paying" jobs like a lawyer or doctor. Some do it for the pay, others do it because it's what they lived and desired for. As with me, I'm currently picking a career choice that I will enjoy, instead of going for a higher paying career that pays well, but I might not enjoy. I thought that was a interesting story.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  2 роки тому

      Elex, happy Thanksgiving to you too. I'm sure you're having a great long weekend. I plan to do more career oriented material in 2022 and yes, there are many factors that go into choosing a career direction and it's also quite specific to each individual. The trick is to get to know ourselves and make decisions that put us in position to take advantages of our strengths.
      Pay was definitely a factor for me and sales can be quite lucrative if you're good at it but most people don't realize wealth is built by keep what you earn, not earning more. I plan to do a vid on that someday too. Talk to you later.

      @@SleepyLizard Love your story and so well told. Mine didn't seem gutsy at the time, more of an overreaction of impressionable youth thinking the end of economic freedom was near. (thanks Ayn Rand, :D) I had been caring several union "workers" on my shoulders at the underground mine mill I started at from 17. No way I was going to make a career of that even with plenty of upward advancement likely and a challenging interesting environment.
      "If free markets work the way they should then I could be making the money of those slackers I was effectively supporting." Worked for me. I learned early to loath unions which was reinforced many times since, but they helped in my 20 yr old choice to go on my own. Easier young then later but never easy.

    Hi tom what's kind of soil you have ? And is your trees living on rain or naturally you use water.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  2 роки тому

      The trees are planted in solid limestone rock. there's about an inch of topsoil that's been build up over 30 years of allowing material to fall from the trees and rot over time. We us rain in the rainy season and we pump water from a well every 5th day during the dry season.
      Thanks for your interest!

    My avocado tree has been doing terrible these past few weeks. The trunk is wrinkly, the top inch looks black and has lines going down the stem. But today when I got back from school, the tree somehow got way worse in just a few hours. The lower part of the stem is covered in white dots. And these dots are causing black rotting spots. Like literally the entire stem from that spot above can die and I'd have to stomp the tree. But there's more, there are black vertical lines going into the stem, most of the buds have died and there's a noticable discoloration. I usually check the moisture of the soil with my finger, but the soil is always moist, even after waiting for it to dry out.
    I know that the soil and the compost are the reason for this disaster. But I haven't found the good soil yet. Currently I'm searching for decomposed granite. I'm going to stop buying these potting mixes which are for "citrus trees", or peat moss with perlite, because these soils have done nothing but bringing me disappointment in the long run.
    I'm very sad. But I'm not giving up hope just yet. I know that a tree with no leaves that is dying back quickly and is probably infested and is dying becuase of stem and root rot, is very unlikely to be rescued, but it's still alive. I love that tree so much and it breaks my heart to see it decline. The only reason I grow quite a lot of avocado trees from seed and mangos even, is because of this tree. When I came back from vacation around the summer of 2021, I saw that my first avocado had sprouted for the first time and I was so excited. It was doing amazing in 2022 and in summer of 2023, but it qradually started declining from September onwards, especially after I brought it outdoors for 2-3 weeks and drenched it with a fungicide for prevention. I've lost quite a few younger avocados in the process. But if this avocado dies, I'll be very heartbroken and probably exhausted.
    I don't know what to do. the decomposed granite is too hard to find, if I don't find DG, I'll use sand, 100%!!!!!
    I love watching your older videos sometimes. I'll have to pray for a miracle and that tree recovers, somehow. Wish me luck!
    Aaaaand God bless you!
