Some others have given good tips but I’ll add one that should help: Don’t stop paddling until you feel the board start moving on the wave. You seem to stop paddling when the wave is still behind you, probably because you’re trying to grab the rails and brace for the wave. The problem there is that when the wave comes, you don’t have enough speed to make it down the face of the wave and instead what is going to happen is that the wave will start lifting the tail of the board and drive your nose down into the water causing you to pearl. You should keep paddling even as the wave approaches and pop up as soon as you feel the board start traveling down the face of the wave. Also, you should learn how to do a turtle roll on a longboard to get past breaking waves. If a wave is going to break on you, you should grab the rails slightly forward on the board and then roll sideways. As the wave passes, while underwater you should pull on the rails to force the nose of the board under the wave and out the other side. It will help you to not get so pummeled when paddling out.
Everyone’s got pointers and advice and you shouldn’t go there or do this Mav. And he out here living the life Crushing it. Doing what Makes him happy. Some of y’all should take note.
@@williambenner5550 if you get stuck in a rip just relax and swim long shore with the long shore current until you are out of rip and comfortably swim back to shore. Rip currents rarely go to far out. Sometimes dog leg rips are a bit more interesting to get out of. The key is to relax and not panic.
Rips are a lot more uncommon on the west coast due to the depth of the water. Often the rips are what a guard calls a “flash rip” (former guard myself, so I promise this is legitimate). If you cannot swim laterally to remove yourself from the rip, relax and float. The rip WILL subside and you will be able to casually swim inward away from the rip area.

I was a California State Beach Lifeguard for 9 yrs in San Diego. A word of advice. Stay on the board and avoid walking on the bottom as much as possible. On a beach with very little human activity like that is a prime place for sting rays. If you have to walk in the water make sure you shuffle your feet. Cause the sound scares stingrays away so you won’t accidentally step on them and get stung. Sting ray stings hurt a lot. If you ever get one get your foot in as hot as water as your can handle. It will neutralize the protein based poison and will keep it from spreading up your leg into your groin. Keep it in hot water for a few hours or r until the pain is gone when you remove from hot water
