One thing I found while doing this drill is that it's more of a _coordination_ exercise than a _strength_ exercise - when Bernardo was yanking on Xande's legs, Xande wasn't so much "fighting against" the leg-pulling as much as he was "moving with" it; Bernardo pulls Xande's leg, so Xande uses his upper core to make his elbows follow the movement. Bernardo pulls his arms, so Xande uses his lower core to make his legs follow the movement. Bernardo pulls him to one side, so Xande uses his obliques to make the opposite side follow the movement. The beginning of the drill, where Xande moves his upper core and then his lower core separately, is probably the most useful component in getting up to his level of mastery in the drill, since it helps give you a good sense of how the core is used to coordinate the upper and lower body like he does here.

Please, no lies. Xande didn't invent anything. This defense called by him "diamond" already has records in books of the greatest judoka after Jigoro Kano, Kyuzo Mifune in his book Canon Judo of 1956 on page 175 and also in the book Higher Judo - ground work of Feldenkrais, M. & G 1952 Koizumi on page 62. In other words, this movement has existed for at least 70 years ...
Some BJJ practitioners have a bad habit of taking Judo techniques, giving them a brazilian portuguese name and saying that they invented ....

Pretty much all the basic principles and techniques of BJJ are derived from Japanese judo ja jujutsu, I don't think anyone is denying that. BJJ is just an evolution of the newaza present in those arts. A lot of that evolution is also completely impractical for a real fight and only works under a specific competition ruleset.

I know this is two years later, but this comment is so stupid, I had to reply. Xande does not ONCE claim that he invented this technique. Never. He would likely be the first to admit that he stands on the shoulders of giants, and has adapted and derived his game from ideas he was taught. But the fact remains that he has successfully used this technique in the highest levels of competition for DECADES. It works. He's teaching it. He's not claiming he invented it.

@@evrose Obviously, for you to say all of this, you understand the Portuguese language and have seen all the videos that Xande talks about the subject, correct?
Otherwise it would be stupid to make comments about something that the person has not studied, does not have in-depth knowledge on the topic...
      I'm waiting for your response....
