Saying no to spending money on school costumes for school fancy dress up days has made me feel empowered. We use what resources we already have and our creativity and skills to construct our own outfits for £0 rather than going out and buying an outfit.

Tonight, I almost told my husband we could order something from a restaurant. I was tired and really didn't feel like cooking, but I remembered an easy to make "chicken nugget recipe". Basically, you drain a can of chicken really well --squeeze out the excess liquid in by pushing it through a strainer. Add an egg, 1/3 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese , 3 tablespoons of parmesan cheese, a dash of pepper, a dash of paprika, a little garlic powder and mix up. Use a heaping tablespoon and form each into "nuggets". I cooked mine in the air fryer (sprayed first) at 370 for 7 minutes. I am gluten free so I had mine with a side salad and fruit. My husband and daughter put theirs on homemade rolls with a little hot sauce. It was fast, economical, and everyone enjoyed them. :) Win, Win, Win!!!

I am resisting the temptation of going to the thrift store/antique store. I have resolved to purging all the duplicates and dust catchers in my house that I never use. I want to enjoy empty spaces that are now filled with items I no longer need.
Once I eliminate clutter I have promised myself that if I buy anything I need to get rid of two things.
I cant wait for garage sale season to get started.

To answer the question: I feel empowered with a written budget, my cash money in envelopes and an emergency savings. Next I feel empowered when mailing the bills (yes I still do that), buying the groceries and other needed items and putting the specified amount of fuel in the car. I am prepared, ready to go and empowered. Love that word!.

I feel empowered when I resist the lure of eating at restaurants. My husband and I have really been doing so much better in this area. Sundays were usually when we ate out because of church services. My husband pastors one church, is assistant pastor at another church and also helps out at another church. With three church services in one day it seemed easier to get some fast food. The only problem was we were spending far to much money. I’m happy to say that now we hardly ever eat at restaurants. I have food on hand ( usually leftovers) for our busy Sundays. It makes me feel so much better knowing that we are saving instead of basically wasting our money. Plus homemade food just tastes better to me.❤

Happy Birthday Emmy! You scored on your birthday gifts! The bread looks delicious. I just moved two 5-gallon buckets on my patio preparing for container gardening. I think being able to save some money at the end of the month is empowering. I just went to Walmart looking for a specific item. They didn't have what I needed. I pushed my empty cart on my way out, handed it to a nice older lady coming in, and told her to have a nice day.. that was a definite "no" to buying and "yes" to kindness😊

I have always cooked from scratch and in the last few years I have been able to grow some food items. I started with herbs and tomato plants on my window sills but now have moved onto salad items and veg in my teeny tiny garden. It's great, saves money, tastes wonderful, it is relaxing and because I don't use pesticides provides healthier food and is kinder to the planet. All things I love!

I started making my own bread about 6 months ago- it has to be gluten free bread because of celiac disease. It's completely different than making normal glutinous bread, but my oh my, it's SOOO much better than anything store bought AND so much tastier (have you TASTED gf bread/food/whatever, lol) as well as so much less expensive! I started low spend/no spend in December. I did an actual "grocery haul" today to restock on some things that are needed and were on sale. It was still less than $200, and I had saved for it specifically knowing it was going to happen. AND, I have done so good with saving that we can look at new couches and pay cash by March (on top of other savings). Yes, looking at actual new furniture, high quality, for long term use. The furniture in the house is all second hand or purchased 25 yrs ago. Couches are probably almost 40 yrs old.

Creating and sticking to a monthly budget is very empowering for us. Knowing where every single penny is going is wonderfully liberating and reduces a lot of anxiety. I also created a sourdough starter last June and make a loaf every week (my husband is retired but I'm still working full-time). I have never thought of myself as a baker (I love cooking but am not fond of baking), but the process of making sourdough bread, getting my hands in the dough, and baking a beautiful, scrumptious loaf of bread from scratch is one of the highlights of my weekend. Happy birthday! Great finds at the thrift store!

Our family ( hubby and kids) thrift store shop for gifts each Christmas for each other. I must share that I got my daughter a $2500 designer gown for $25 from our thrift store. She was conducting a very prestigious end of school year concert ( Conservatorium of Music High school). Not only did she wow the audience with her music, but also with her performance gown!
I also have a suggestion that could help someone out there. If you have an older friend or neighbour with an overgrown garden, how about helping them with it and setting up a vege patch for them and you.

My Bible study group which has been together for 25 years loves to celebrate our members birthday and Christmas with food and gifts. Last Christmas we made it a rule you only had to buy ONE gift from the thrift store. All gifts are put in the middle of the table and if you can answer Biblical questions correct you can choose a gift! This way it saves us a TON of money and if you don't care for the gift you got you can just donate back to the thrift store! Win Win. Your bread looks so good, I love to bake bread. Ooooo, the smell is heaven.

Thank you Emmy and Paul for another wonderful video!! I feel empowered every time I'm able to repurpose something, or invest in something that will save money down the line. Most recently, I ordered a nice pair of hair trimmers so my husband can help trim my hair going forward (inspired by something you'd mentioned in the past, lol!) We both felt pretty excited about that and the money it'll save, since I only need a trim and nothing fancy. We always celebrate those types of wins!

Hi Emmy and Paul! Happy belated birthday!! 🎂🎂🎂🥳🎉🍰🍰 Gorgeous haul for your bday! That book here is $8.95 used. I would never find one for $2! I wish we had a Goodwill here❤ Only in US can you get all that for $10. The thrift stores are killing us here they add taxes! So sooooo petty and unfair to pay tax on something already taxed when it was new.
My weakness is craft supplies and ephemera. I try not to look. I watch UA-camrs that constantly push new tools, new supplies, subscriptions, copious amounts of everything. Including their expensive printers, plotters, softwares and devices. They are almost designed to make you feel very poor. But I moved on. I click off if I get anxiety. That’s it. Consumerism in hard times is bankrupting people. I use everything repurposed, recycled. Anything I already have and shop my own supplies. I found stuff I forgot I had! I mean we need to look first at hime b4 running to buy doubles of things! I am guilty. Then I feel bad.
I spent 1/2 my life in submission to others. I used to say “Sorry”, for everything. No was even worse! I could not say no. I still struggle.
Iv been saying NO to sales and emails daily. To ppl its harder.
I failed with sour dough starter a few times. I made bread years ago using it but I never did it again. I need a chart so I can follow the schedule to get it going. I was doing it differently. I used sugar the first time to start feeding it. I love making bread but I have yet to make a dutch oven bread. Its a goal. I will make it a goal for end February to have it ready to go. I said it so I must do it! Gorgeous bread Emmy❤ Thanks for this video. So encouraging.

I am wondering what crafters you are following. Of course you always shop your house first, swap items with others and find the lowest prices possible. I am a crafter and this is what I do. We forget to enjoy what we actually have, what we already own. Our beautiful homes, our access to clean water and food, need to make that the source of our enjoyment. And and of course our relationship with God as primary source to feed on His Word and stop trying to fill in everything else from the outside.
I have a 62-year-old woman. I’m just now learning how to cook at home. I’ve made good money and wasted thousands eating out over the years. I’m coming to the end of my career and being more frugal and learning the joy of cooking and eating at home. I have a bread maker and I really enjoy it. 🏡 ❤

Happy birthday!! I just practiced this!! I was looking at braided rugs and found gorgeous ones on an AMAZING sale. Put them in my cart, put in my credit card, took a breath and looked at rugs I have in those spots now. Then I said “nope” I have the extra funds but do I really need them? The ones I have now are in really good shape and function like a rug is supposed to! So, I removed all the info and closed and removed the app. I am determined to attempt my first canning experience soon! I live at a higher altitude and have always been terrified to can to begin with, but I’m gonna figure it out! I have visions of a pantry larder of homemade canning. Love all your birthday gifts!! That is a great book and I LOVE the placemats! I never see great placemats at mine but will keep an eye out. A great birthday for both of you!

Having a healthy savings account is very empowering, especially when you are hit with a car bill of more than $700 and we can pay it easily and with no anxiety, thanks to following a budget and being frugal. I have been making your amish bread for my husband every weekend for a long time, and he loves it, and I also make my own gluten free bread (food allergy) being careful for cross contamination. I haven't had an issue. Thank you for making this video about saying no. We are like you. More than one commitment a weekend leaves us drained, so we never do more than one (sometimes none), apart from our Sunday faith gathering. I'm also very tired at the end of the day after work, so I will use that as a self care and very real excuse (or need) to say no. Thank you Emmy and Paul! Esther

Your bread looked wonderful. I bake our own bread but we just don’t get through it and it’s not quite the same refrigerated. Now for the Financial security question. I have lived on this homestead for decades. It’s paid off and through the years we updated it to have very low utilities. In an area that gets cold and hot, this has been a blessing. We have planted gardens, bushes and trees to help with food production. As we age and our funds don’t go as far, we can comfortably live here without worry.

It looks like someone blessed you mightily with that beautiful bouquet of tulips on your counter. Tulips are my all-time favorite flower. About 20 years ago, I developed allergies to them, but I still enjoy them via pictures and silk versions for my home. Happy belated birthday to my friend I've never met.

Wow! Quite the haul for your birthday at the thrift store! How fun. Sometimes you can’t find anything but if you keep looking you can find treasures. I agree with your, just say no. That is the secret of thrift store shopping. Otherwise you can fill your house up with unneeded stuff! Thanks.

I feel empowered, because I grow my own food, I raised chickens, so I have farm fresh eggs. I bake my own bread. I grind my own wheat berries. I have a wood-burning stove, and I burn limbs that are fallen in my yard from my trees, along with kill dried wood, I make things from scratch I don’t have a dishwasher I wash things by hand, I don’t go out to eat. I bought a very inexpensive house in 2000 so my mortgage is only $516 a month I make do and I go without and I could not be happier.

Happy belated birthday! As I was born and raised in Germany (but have lived in the US for 23 years now), I am kind of particular about my bread. Where we lived before in CA, we had one store where I could get acceptable bread. But when the pandemic started, I tried and tried and tried again, until I found a recipe we liked (I am not too fond of sourdough bread). I have baked our bread myself for years now and we are still not tired of it as it does not dry out easily and still tastes fresh after freezing and also on the next day. I buy flour in bulk at Costco and store it in a food safe bucket with a screw on lid in the garage and from that I fill a smaller container for kitchen use. I also bake two breads at once, cut them in half and freeze them. We usually eat one half every two days (due to German breakfast ...). I will try that Amish white bread recipe as I sometimes like some white bread. As you, I feel empowered by not having to pay the high price of bread as well as knowing how to cook from scratch. That allows me to just buy basic ingredients and not have to spend extra on convenience food or restaurants (if I do not want to, once in a while I do though :-).

I’m empowered by being debt free and mortgage free! We say NO to debt. When young cashiers ask if we’d like to save on a purchase by opening a credit account, I enjoy telling them, “No thanks! True financial security is not how much you make, it’s not owing anything!”

When you talk about doing an inventory of your freezer and pantry it sort of went over my head to be honest but today I was making my shopping list and decided for the first time to do your inventory,oh my goodness I found 36 possible main meals I had no idea I had! This included a forgotten whole side of salmon,a gammon joint,24 chicken legs,a whole chicken and vegetables as well as snacks like pizzas etc. I dont need to go shopping now! Whoo hoo!!! This all happened because of you so thank you xxx

One thing that makes me feel empowered in my finances is automating my saving/investing. I have an automatic transfer every month from my savings account into my investment account. Another thing that’s empowering is having my income checks automatically direct deposited into my Savings account ( not my checking account), it’s a little psychological trick that prioritizes savings, that way I can look at my budget and assess it throughly, before I decide how much of the money to transfer into checking. Yes it would be easier to spend it if I directly deposited to checking, but that’s the point, I want to reduce my spending and make the saving part more important. It helps me think ‘Whoa, wait a minute here’ before I spend.

I made my own sourdough starter last year and I also received a 40 year old starter from a friend at the same time. Both are alive and doing well. I like having two starters in case one dies. I have been making sourdough sandwich bread from John Kirkwood on UA-cam. It is very good but starts by making a sponge the day before. A little planning required but so worth it. Never fails. I will try your recipe here though as well as it doesn’t take as long. Thanks for sharing. Making sourdough bread is so rewarding.

My husband and I have taken steps to decide together what we do and do not want to do when we have time off. Happy birthday, Emmy! What great treasures you got for your birthday! Such a blessing indeed!! I got some sourdough starter from my voice teacher & have been making it for the past bunch of months. It is SOOOO much better than anything from a bakery or the store. This weekend I experimented and made a cheddar chive sourdough loaf and it is so tasty!!! Yummmmm!!! If I still have bread left and don’t need a loaf myself I gift a loaf for that week to the Friday Cafe, the org I cook for every two weeks which helps to feed folks w/ food insecurity. I found out the guests love the sourdough I bring so I now make it a bi-weekly thing I bring w/ the other food I make.
