I have come to the realization today I need to live with the understanding we are in a depression. We have to fix things we have to make do, we have to walk away. We have to be happy with what we have.!

Exactly. People talk about the ''recession is coming ''. It's come and gone. Depression is here. People are losing jobs, housing, no food, empty downtowns, hyper grocery prices going up every few weeks. The government gives billions away to everyone except their own struggling people. We're on our own.

You guys are correct we are in a recession, decline, recession, readjustment, or whatever the news wants to push. I think we will never see the culture that we have had again, and it will be definitely more intense, dangerous, and a real learning curve if we don't take control and wise up.

My daughter's new in laws did the same- with exception of buying new furniture and redoing their flooring to impress people that were just as miserable as the new in- laws and that whole side of that family. Good for you for just being happy with what you own and not allowing others to control your future destiny .

Hi from the UK. Definitely on the "do I want it, do I need it, can I afford it". We have been decorating our bedroom and I thought it would be nice to have some new furniture as we've had ours for many, many years. After shopping at numerous stores and looking on line, everything seemed so expensive. My husband said, why don't we just paint what we have, so we did. We saved a fortune and it looks lovely 🙂

Hello fellow Brit 🤩. He’s right and also I don’t know about you but we just find everything that is relatively affordable is really poorly made. People often knock Ikea but I’ve bought stuff from there which is cheap but doesn’t claim to be anything other, but equally it lasts. Some of the furniture stores we have in the uk just don’t sell quality. So I think you did the right thing 😀👌

I was shocked at the price of a blouse in a retail store, $75. I walked away. Then I looked in the back of my closet and found a blouse that looked very similar. I paid $3.00 for it on clearance years and years ago. I got a compliment when I wore it to work that week.

I am wanting a little loveseat for the corner of my bedroom, and I almost bought one I saw online that would ship to my house, but the reviews weren’t great, and I decided to stop and wait and go look at used furniture stores for a well made one that is in good condition. I haven’t found just the right one yet, but I am waiting until I get a great deal on a solid piece of furniture. No more buying crappy furniture that’s also overpriced.

My daughter went to culinary school, now a Professional Baker with a KITCHEN AID mixer that MY grandmother bought new. Four owners! I do NOT want a flimsy plastic replacement; I need a good mixer, or I don't really need a mixer. (I bake very little) That was a very expensive purchase for her, but I would say it is well spent, as it lasted many generations. Good enough is fine for me with some purchases. Used. If it is something resoleable, or repairable (by me) all the better. I still mend by hand. I am HAPPY to take usable things from someone who does not want it.

This month I managed to save nearly £200 thanks to your tips and ideas. I am disable and find it difficult to go to the stores so I buy on line a lot. However I will put the item in the basket and leave it there fir a couple of weeks, then if I have not needed it or have found a substitute in my home it is not bought. Same with food,as I have to book a delivery spot a couple of weeks in advance,I will fill my basket and save it and the a couple of days before delivery I will go through the basket and often delete many items or change due to my menu planner. I will also buy somethings that I can get more than one meal from ,such as cauliflower. I might use part for cauliflower steaks and the remainder goes into cauliflower cheese or curry ,or vegetable casserole. Thank you Emmy and Paul for your tips, ideas and encouragement.

I needed a China hutch…yep a need, live in a really small house with a smaller kitchen. My husband said to get one for my birthday. The hunt was on, we didn’t want junk that would fall apart because it would be used as a kitchen cabinet. Everything I found was really expensive. I had gone to a shop that was only open 1 weekend a month…still nothing. On my way home I remembered a small consignment shop I had only been in once many years ago. I went in and they had several. I found one I really liked…no price…I called the girl over to ask the price, she looked and couldn’t find it either. She made a phone call to her boss, still didn’t know the price. The girl google lensed and stood there for several minutes and finally said how about $70. I said I would take it. I couldn’t believe it… it’s solid maple, dovetailed drawers and beautiful. I hope the girl still has a job but what a blessing for me. When I need something, I look and wait then when I find it I know it’s the right thing to do.

Thinking of you and your collection and because I'd just read somewhere that pyrex capitalized = "vintage," I put it in my basket. Walking to the register I asked myself "WHAT AM I DOING???". I live in the middle of a large Pennsylvania Amish community, we hired them to build our house, our kitchen and bathroom cabinets, our barn and a working garage for hubby….we have many Amish friends….have had dinners at their homes, attended weddings (quite interesting), given them rides for groceries, etc….I’m full of stories….one time, an Amish friend was injured at his sawmill, my hubby happened to be there and took him to a nearby hospital….the ladies are pleasant and sweet….very hard working women….here they speak Pennsylvania Dutch to their children until school age….it’s a interesting community. Sadly, you may have heard on the news, there was a young Amish woman who was recently killed by someone in her home….this happened about 30 miles from us and has rocked both the Amish and Englishman’s communities….they still need prayers. Thanks again for your helpful ideas…..

Yes, yes, yes! Times are uncertain, and in many ways we are in charted waters. We need to reduce consumption, reduce clutter and possessions so we can manage our resources wisely. If our life changes suddenly, we are in a much better position to adapt if we are traveling lighter. We have to let go of our scarcity and poverty mindset. It is wise to have fewer quality items such as clothes, furniture, household tools, as well as a supply if good quality nutritional foods for future use. Salmon filets and canned/frozen fruit and veg, yes. Cookies, cips and soda, no. Quality sweaters and boots, yes. A closet of fast fashion, no. Quality kitchen items, yes. Cheap nick-knacks, no. A streamlined life makes it easier to move for employment, take on additional work if needed, and gives us better focus on resource management.

Hi Emmy and Paul. I am on a low spend year so I can achieve a couple of financial goals. I realized I really don’t ever find anything at Dollar Tree so quit going except to buy my Comet cleanser which I use in the bathroom. I have also “ walked away” from the grocery store circulars for the most part. I have been a chronic over buyer of groceries most of my adulthood and have decided to eat through my freezer and pantry. If I don’t look at the circulars I’m not tempted to replenish what I already have too much of just because it’s a loss leader. Except for produce and eggs I’ve not bought anything else this year. Like you, I’m only buying one banana or 2 tomatoes, or just what I need for a recipe and this has really cut down on food waste.

Thank you for another encouraging video!! I just love that recipe idea and am writing it down. To answer the question of the day, just last night I had to walk away from buying a whole bunch of decorative stickers. They were lovely, but after thinking hard on it, I decided to purchase sticker paper sheets instead. Not only was it way cheaper to get the paper in bulk instead of pre-made stickers, but I can now make my own stickers and use the sticker paper for mailing labels as well, so it has multiple uses!

I went to the Dollar Tree because I had a list of things I needed. I only bought one item that was not on the list.
Today I got out of work early and I was tempted to stop at a thrift store that I haven’t been to before, but I decided not to stop. I am really trying to keep a tight budget this because this month I bought a new used car for cash, I got a tooth implant, my auto insurance came due for the year, and I prepaid on my lawn fertilization for the year, so I am tapped out!

Wasn't it Jamie Oliver who said, "Real foods ARE ingredients."? I like that! Like you, I've learned to begin (mostly) with simple ingredients and put them together in interesting and varied ways to make dishes we love.
When you showed the two bits of video at the beginning I actually felt calm during the video with the fields being readied and I felt anxious during the bit with the stuffed shelves. You definitely got your point across to me. Less can often be more.
The one thing that came to mind immediately for me as far as what I've walked away from recently was a large bottle of plain Coffee Mate creamer. My daughter and I had dental cleanings in our small town this week and we needed a few things from the grocery store. She and I enjoy flavored creamers (I know....awful stuff), but sometimes we like regular creamer and my husband likes it as well. A large bottle (family sized) of Coffee Mate was $7.99. NO WAY! I told her we'd use evaporated milk or something else until I can get to the store in the next town where we do our main shopping. The creamer is cheaper and they also offer generic brands. I'm NOT paying that much for creamer. We walked away...and so far, we're surviving. ; )

I am an avid cross stitcher and there was a recent “market” where new supplies, patterns and kits were being promoted so my local craft shop had lots of new things, which I wanted to see but did walk away from. Once home I reorganized my stash of cross stitch supplies and found several patterns I wanted to stitch that I already own. However we went to a Polish deli/food store in our city and we splurged on some delicious Polish and other European foods we don’t see in our chain grocery stores. My family is of Ukrainian descent and holidays like Easter make me feel nostalgic for the foods I ate as a child.

I’ve learned to “make” really quick air fryer pizza in the air fryer using pre- baked pizza crusts from the store. A little pizza sauce, some shredded cheese, and some sliced smoked sausage (we like it better than pepperoni.) I assemble the pizza while the air fryer is preheating. Then into the air fryer for 5 minutes and it’s done. It’s delicious, too. Not as economical as making your own pizza dough but much cheaper than even a frozen store pizza. And faster, too.

I had to walk away from a corned beef brisket, groceries in general, and a Pasqua new low cost dress, warm socks, and heat in the house..
My cat needs pet wipes and had to put the money for her 42 dollars for 400 wipes. (I tried sensitive baby wipes but they irritated her behind and her hair fell out; so no skimping on those. I tried water and paper towels, but they don't work like the pet wipes.)
I also wanted Pasqua groceries but had an unexpected vet bill of 1,200, plus 900 for half of property taxes at the end of February that cleaned out what little savings we had. Lent is going to be extra tight this year, but with God all things are possible 🙏🏼❤️

Great prices on the grocery haul! What happened to me today (in HI): Organic blueberries, 6 oz, $ 7.59 ... Needless to say that I walked away 🙂 I bought frozen instead for a lot less ... But in the sense you mentioned: Also a vintage Pyrex dish at a yard sale. Having moved from a house to a condo, I really do not have the space anymore. So in addition to: "Do I really need it? Do I just want it?" I ask myself: "Where will I store it?". If I cannot come up with a solution, I walk away. Scrapbooking products and stationary (I still write paper and ink letters ...) are also a great weakness of mine. I constantly have to remind myself that I have enough for probably the rest of my life already. I really want to use up what I have. Thank you for the recipe! My husband cannot have tomatoes, so I am always happy to find dishes with "non-tomato" sauces. Our cooking is very similar 🙂 Easy, quick, using leftovers, using mostly one ingredient items, cooking from scratch, grating cheese myself and so on.

Hi Emmy & Paul, thank you for this fabulous video. I so enjoyed watching this and felt inspired and encouraged by it. It's always just so lovely the way you do keep it real, and I can tell that you are both such genuine and rather delightful people to know.
Paul is always very good at doing the taste tests. This chicken dish really did look delicious.
The company I work for gives us a staff discount of 20% off on everything, including sale prices. It makes it quite easy to give into wants and, years ago I was often falling into that trap. However, through prayer and also watching videos such as yours, I have now in recent years been able to walk away from the wants. I'm also learning to be patient and wait for the right time to get something I really need.
Recently, with God's help, I was able to walk away from a clothing and make up sale that the company I work for was doing. I have enough clothing already and still quite a lot of lipsticks to get through, so I really didn't need any more stuff. I'm finding that whenever I walk away from a want, it feels very freeing and this encourages me to walk away from the wants more and more. It does save me a lot of money too, so it's a win win.
Well done to you for walking away from the pyrex dish. I know you really like those, so that was a huge win for you to be able to walk away from that. 👏👏👏
Thank you for showing Dixie at the end. It made me laugh. She's just so cute.
