    Thom Yorke's music is like visiting an art museum, in this case sonically. Walking around to every painting and feeling its contents. Every project he and his friends create are their own abstract art exhibits that paint unique textures and meanings to interpret and inspire. Im so ready for this new album

    The first time I heard Thom Yorke sing was a song called "No Surprises" on a friend's music player.
    There wasn't as much artist information on the internet as there is today.
    Time passed and I watched a film called "Vanilla Sky", which was an adaptation of "Abra los Ojos".
    In that film, "Everything in its right place" played. From then on I knew that Radiohead was a different band and that it would definitely be part of my life. I listened to all the albums, and I'm a big fan of Thom Yorke.

    Didn’t expect another album so soon after the first one. Really glad the boys are enjoying what they make without any pressure other than making stuff that matters to them. I can imagine how much pressure there is for them to make their” other “ stuff , but I’m glad Thom, and Johnny are just making stuff with nothing but creative freedom. Excited for this new album! Yeah, it really seems they're just truly enjoying themselves, I've seen so many live recordings of the first album and contrary to early in his career he seems to be loving it on stage just as much as I love the debut album. Then again I am possibly a liiittle bit biased.

      I think with The Smile they don't labor over these tunes. They flesh them out and record them. Thom and the guys have spoken about with each Radiohead record they suffer under the labor making something perfect. They are perfectionists and The Smile I think is way to knock out tunes as a three pieces with little fuss over instrumentation due to there only three members. Plus, touring is a bit easier and potentially more profitable playing smaller venues. Radiohead is a machine and touring is a large undertaking, playing much larger venues.

  • @jfmgunner
    @jfmgunner Рік тому +195

    I find myself unable to stop thinking about that closing moment when the final version of Thom arrives at the bar and "sees" the other versions of himself who are almost pantomiming his different daily emotions and moods. He's looking at them like they are different people even as he recognizes them. But the most telling glance is at the final figure, the one who is hollow, see-through and disappearing: a man who doesn't belong in this world and who does not know how to find peace and contentment in his existence. He imagines going through the motions all over again, dreading that he won't find a way to simply live happily. It's a grim sight to behold. The pain and ultimate resignation in his eyes is absolutely devastating. Our lives finally amount to little more than "grains of sand slipping through our hands".

      @WhatTheJunque Yeah I'm actually surprised how well he translated these feelings. On the other hand the music all these years has translated all these feeling so well that obviously Thom feels all these things very deeply. He probably didn't have to do much "acting".

      I feel similar. I also think that there is certain feeling of it being kind of forced on the lyrical subject. Like apart from all this discomfort and sick thoughts there is no way to escape from them. I just started to work 1,500 km away from my family to let them live normally, and pay off debt. The feeling of alienation and almost derealization I'm getting from being half of the time among people that use a language I do not know, and half among strangers that came from my country but are substantially different from me, it really weighs down on a human. I really connect with this song personally, one of those few good songs that you feel rather than hear.

      HansDelli, I can't quite remember the city but I think its the dead city of Nineveh (maybe Sumer). If you look further, in its walls are engravings of the people that lived their with hollowed eyes with some painted black and white. This video is a reference to that city and their song "How to Disappear Completely". That's what this city, or at least its people did; the only person in this entire video alive is Thom's character and everything else is a (Mal-adaptive) daydream. Thom's point is for us to figure out why.

      @xavicampoverde6031I actually have pretty similar thoughts and feelings about this song. The chord progression is very open and wandering (without a conventional cadence or resolution), which creates an interesting atmosphere. I agree that this song doesn’t have a strong melodic hook, which I think creates a somewhat mysterious kind of vibe overall. I am curious to see how this song fits and aligns within the context of the full album.

    Notably, the promotional materials for Radiohead’s 2010 album The King of Limbs included a poem seemingly titled “Wall of Ice,” incorporating the phrase “wall of eyes.” During that period, there were speculations circulating that Radiohead might release an album or EP titled “Wall of Ice.”

    The chord resolution at 1:54 is personally the most cathartic piece of this wonderful music. Such brilliant chord progressions and rhythmic syncopation out of The Smile, can't wait to see them in concert! Thanks Thom for keeping my chin up through the years ❤
