To test the theory Alex got himself one of the fastest hot hatches, an Audi RS3 and challenged Rory, in a Lamborghini Huracan STO, to a head to head battle. Who will win?

Putting Rory and Alex together has really elevated the entertainment value of these episodes. I love Rory's reviews, but watching him scare the piss out of Alex is just plain fun. Throttle House better watch out!

Remember watching Clarkson on top gear years ago (can’t remember what car he was driving?) but he said you really don’t need much more than 350bhp for the/a road/car…..looks like he wasn’t far wrong!

Spent some time recently in a golf r 7.5 DSG with a stage 1 remap so maybe 360-370bhp. It’s made me reassess things. Faster than a conventional super car across a mixture of roads/ weather conditions? Yes I’d say so, full throttle from low speed in 2nd gear on greasy roads elicits a momentary tiny slip from the front tyres as the haldex 4wd does it’s thing , but that’s the only time in hundreds of miles traction was broken. As a former cosworth/ evo/ 996 turbo owner I was very impressed.
I love this, Rory represent people who drive these super expensive “out of reach” cars. While Alex represent people who buy more relatable obtainable cars. Alex is so competitive it makes you cheer him on!

@@Johnpdf Yeah RS3 is for rich people already. I'm well off and make good money but I'd have to prioritise the car over a mortgage to buy an RS3. An affordable hot hatch like a GTI doesn't hold a candle to a Lambo.
RS3 is 100k plus Brande new in Australia. I see a green rs3 at my local supermarket at least once a week or fortnight.
I'd love An Audi hatchback tuned with insane horsepower as it's the closest thing I'd get to owning an Lamborghini but it's cheaper.
@@Johnpdf You’re right, the RS3 is expensive, But it’s being compared to a Lamborghini. So in this comparison it’s the “cheaper” car.
Back in the late 70s the 113 hp Golf GTI was claimed to be as fast on b roads as most of the ponderous supercars then….. that was one of its selling points. I am old enough to remember that… yes that old…

Golf GTI was wicked then. However My 900kg Peugeot 205 1.9 ruled the roads in London and surrounding Counties.. Nothing ever got close to ME on normal roads, not even a Ferrari 308. The lightweight and superb chassis on the 205 was exceptional, I only wished it had more powaaaa.
Are you then also old enough to remember that it wasn't true? I've actually owned a mk1 GTI and a Ferrari 308 from 1977 at the same time. in no performance aspects were they even remotely close. And if you pit it against some of the high end cars of the era, like he 512BB or Countach 400S, forget it. On top of that, every higher end 911/930 had it licked as well.

And you say this with zero first hand experience. These are the usual comments from the hot hatch crowd. It’s no different than what happens today. You pull into a petrol station in a 488 and at some point some clown in a Mk VI R32 will show up claiming to be just as fast bla bla bla. The 308 was not slower than it should be, however people back then knew a lot less about the different exotics. They never thought too much about the difference between a 308, Testarossa or Countach. To most people all exotics were just supposed to be super fast. Reality is that you are comparing a Glof that in its most powerful GTI guise had 112 PS vs. An 1150 kg car with over twice that. You can say what you want, but physics matter and always will.
It was “king of London” because there was a crowd of young guys that kept telling each other that their econobox was faster than a Ferrari. In reality no test or other official review never confirmed this. It was all hearsay from people who had probably never encountered a 308 much less driven one. I still have my 328 and this past fall, a guy in a Mk II said his GTI fast faster as well. He found out differently.
AutoTrader, well done for pairing these two lads together, this is the type of content from two VERY good drivers AND charismatic presenters you needed.

A great interesting comparison, two brilliant presenters who also happen to have great chemistry when put together, probably the most fun car in the world (and Rory almost crashing it lol)... this is just AutoTrader in its finest form. With this formula it has serious potential to become the best car channel in the world.

Should have had the same driver in both cars to further normalise but this shows brilliantly just how far “ordinary” cars have come in recent years. Will all be undone with the switch to EV’s due to the weight but that will improve eventually with Solid State technology. Great content.
What do you mean by will be undone with the switch to EV's due to the cars weight? Are you comparing EV supercars to regular EVs or regular EVs to supercars?
@@DrSmoothlove I meant that like for like where handling is concerned, an EV equivalent of an ICE car will not handle as well due to the weight. I do think it will change over time though as battery tech further improved but to me EV weight is literally the elephant in the room.
@@stephencollins7714 At equal power that is probably true, but I recommend you watch the Hagerty video with the M5cs, Cadillac Blackwing, and Tesla Model S plaid. Spoiler the Tesla despite not having aero for or being built for the track still wins.
@DrSmoothlove yeaaa but I'd rather watch Blackwings race than Model S Plaids. Part of heart and soul is in the sound and feel. Ima keep going performance ICE until if/when you can't buy them anymore 🤷♂️
Same driver? Naa , this was about the car's usability in real life driving. Out in the streets, you get differently capable drivers in tune with their machines so this is quite representative!

1:58 ooo that shot down the exhaust to see the dark red glow of the power plant was really cool
I'm not surprised well balanced power and performance almost beating a super car. In the pursuit of 0-60 times and horsepower numbers. Cars have become more straight line drag strip oriented. That's fun but dangerous on the curves. I enjoy the feel of a well balanced car, in any situation you always feel comfortable and in control. Great video!
The rs3 is consistently putting down 3.7-ish times and some have recorded much faster while the lamb can be all over the place.
I would have the rs3 for British roads and just to enjoy driving, the lamb is too expensive and I would be worried on every drive plus the running costs.

My prediction for your fastest lap was +0.9, amazing driving through.
All of that makes sense, no downforce, top speed is irrelevant, torque about the same and hot hatches handle pretty good, plus everybody knows it’s more fun to go fast on an underpowered car than with an overpowered one.
Alex is just brilliant. Love his channel too 👍🏻

Very entertaining video and closer than I was expecting.
Ran my MK7.5 Golf R with a C7 ZO6 on some tight backroads and even with the 350 hp deficit the Golf R easily kept up with the ZO6 due to the AWD and faster DCT transmission.

The priceless 🤣 pleasure of owning a supercar isn’t a question of performance and figures only, but a matter of exclusivity and atmosphere. And that can’t be matched by any hot hatch whatsoever. That said, for daily life I would choose the hot hatch. You guys had a lot of fun, and I enjoyed watching. Thanks 🙏

Not in an STO, but I have driven a few Ferraris, Porsches and a Jaguar F-Type R AWD. So I am well aware that on public roads very fast and powerful cars (let alone supercars) can be a bit of an issue if you let yourself exploit their potential.
Isn't the real pleasure of owning a supercar having a small penis?
You know it's actually now been proven, by a university study, that people with supercars do actually have smaller penis's.

I'll tell you what.....That was a SAVE! by Rory there cause that Lambo was nearly in the bank....I think we all recognize that in real world situations there's only so much Performance you can use no matter what Performance car your driving.

3:10-3:11 you can see him go from having a blast to full concentration when he lost it and he handle that steering wheel like a pro, car’s with rear wheel steering will do that sometimes. But killer driving Rory!
