      Serving the ball well when full of energy is one thing, anyone can do that, that's the easiest part of playing the match. But its a whole different level altogether to also be able to hold up your serve just as good when you are feeling all physically exhausted from long rallies with a tough opponent and can barely hold yourself up to even hit the next serve. This is why I clamp the power level in my serve and clamp just about everything else that I hit. I can't see any other way of making the serve click in the court except that you keep your hands loose. I don't think you can do it if your hands are all tight. I was taught by a former Bolliteri Coach who now coaches nationals and what we are taught by the coach to do is to take the little finger off the grip when doing our serves so we can keep ourselves loose..
      I also believe we have to learn to balance everything out for the serve and even for all the other shots. So the power
      level is not up too high that we don't lose all the tight spin on the ball or if we lose the tight spin then we also lose
      control off the ball as the power overrides the spin and control and starts overcooking all the lines and that the spin is not too loose either because of the power level being too high for the spin. So I clamp my power levels in my shots so I can keep the spin tight so that it don't unravel and become too loose on the ball.

    I'm a 4.5 and have a relatively strong first and second serve and can hit a variety of them and place them where I want with pretty good consistency. It's probably my best shot. What I tell myself when hitting a second serve is 1. Trusting that it'll go in. 2. Don't go after a bad toss. 3. Focus on being super loose and swing aggressively.

    I make 9/10 in practice yet 50% in a match. This goes to show how added pressure affects your second serve, especially in clutch moments.

      @filipmaskovic1877 Рік тому +1

      And it perpetuates itself. Past experiences puts even more pressure in clutch moments telling you that there is a higher chance you miss than make it. So you have to change the mental approach. Focus on the next ball, imagine a perfect scenario, see yourself proud and victoirous.

    I have found that to increase serve contact consistency (especially on kick serve which has a narrow spin window) tossing a bit lower helps a ton. This means the ball is falling slower which lets you time the contact better. I tell myself to hit the ball at the top of the toss, but on video I make contact slightly after. This drastically reduces shanks on the kick serve.

    Former (maybe future?) 5.0 player. Great job Winston! I love Karue's tips about (i) shooting the ball higher after contact, (ii) not rotating the chest like a 1st serve, and (iii) finishing with the racket face fully rotating to end up looking at the back fence. On the ad side, Winston's better serves did these. On the deuce side, the serves looked more like slice serves, missing (iii). @mytennishq - Any changes to the motion on deuce vs. ad side kick serves? I tend to just adjust my feet, but *try* to keep the same swing.

    Thanks Karue, pretty good! Question, is there anything like a "safe" slice to the T or out wide (deuce for righty, ad for lefty) 2nd serve? Or by nature slice can't be safe (at a decent pace). I ask this to mix it up instead of always kicking the 2nd serve.

    • @txsurfnturf
      @txsurfnturf Рік тому

      Hi, I'm not Karue, but I think a good slice second serve is usually a good choice. It's always nice to mix things up. Also, don't count out a slice to the T, that cuts into the body. Sometimes you can cause your opponent to 'jam' himself/herself with that one.

    I imagine it's just repetition so you get that muscle memory. On a recent serve practice I had, I was practicing my second serves and felt comfortable I was making them. Then I started incorporating first serves with the second. I started missing a lot more of my seconds. I feel like I lost the discipline with my second because my first is so different. You think that's just a mental or repetition thing? I appreciated the pressure situation you gave Winston at the end of the video.

    • @KaruesellHQ
      @KaruesellHQ  Рік тому +6

      Yes it is repetition but it is always having confidence you can make it under pressure. One can hit 100 serves in a row in without pressure but fall apart in pressure moments. It is easy to hide your insecurities under “well i hit a lot of serves it should go in”. You might learn more about your motion doing 10 serves under stress than 100 with no stress. Mix in both and you will get better

    second serve consistency is not a problem for me, but rather the consistency of the quality of the kick either its on their head or it will land way to low and almost sluggish and I get smoked it never has been my weapon so usually i stick with a slice body. or smth

  • @kesseje13
    @kesseje13 Рік тому

    This is maybe a more technical question, but what's the role of the legs w/ the kick serve? Are you meant to drive up from the lower body, or is the swinging "leading" the body up?

  • @jan1832

    Great Video! Love your channel! I'm around 5.0 player. I have a decent consistent second serve with kick that I hit to the backhand side. Against same level or lower level players there is no problem. But against better players, they walk around their backhand and too often manage to hit a forehand with pressure. Sometimes they have time to do that because I struggle with power when I kick my serve . I know you lose power when there is more spin, but I lose too much power. Do you have a good tip for that? Generating good power on a kick serve?

    What to do if you feel confident on serving from the deuce side, but not confident serving from the add side? Sometimes feeling of a direction betrays be under the pressure on add side.

    • @elchanclascocina
      @elchanclascocina Рік тому

      Have had that issue too My advice would be more practice (no nuclear science there!) but coupled with positive mindset/psychology. Instead of thinking on the negatives of an ad side serve, think on the positives: you can close games from there, you can get back into deuce from there, you can exploit backhand from there, use a heavier kick, you name it.
      Couple of years ago deuce serve to me became automatic, wouldn't miss much from there but as timed passed I realized my serves even though they go in, they are easier to return from there. My wide slice is not as consistent as I wish, used to be better, the kick to the T is harder than kick wide in ad side and the slice to the T I just started practicing that so I miss a lot. In the ad side with most players (my level) you can just kick all the time and that is the safest serve. You can jam them with body serves, etc or you can do slice or kick to the T or flat anywhere. Now I prefer serving to the ad. So that's the mental part I'm talking about. ✌️

  • @proshepherd
    @proshepherd Рік тому

    Karue, I've always imagined the flight path of the ball coming off my strings (on a second serve) to be parallel with the ground, while simultaneously creating as much top spin as I can possibly produce. This means accelerating as fast or faster than a first serve. Would you consider this to be a good way to visualize it, or is this potentially problematic?
    I understand that this is in conflict with what you said about the trajectory being upwards, however, my rationale is that the contact point is already so far above the net that getting any type of lift is completely unnecessary. By leveling out the trajectory, It allows the server to continue to create spin with MPH.

    You should look up, which is your dominant eye. You do a triangle with your hands, hold it in front and look at the person on the other side of the court one eye look close the other eye look when I should show straight the other otherwise should show it out a bit, the eye that says it shows straight is your dominant and will change the way he serves in front or down across the line. Another thing I noticed is his pronation not pronating

    What's your thought on using a slice serve as a second serve? It might not be as challenging to return as a good kick serve, but I think technically it is simpler and therefor can be executed with more confidence (and consistency). Aim for a body slice serve to challenge the returner a bit.

    Looks like the toss is a bit of an issue. I think Winston is really throwing up the ball without any leg bend. Ideally you want knees to bend and legs go down at same time as arm goes up. His arm accelerates up just before the knee bend down, which makes him use more arm muscles (which are weaker than legs and inconsistent) than needed. Just a SLIGHT delay in toss will time w knee bend and be much more consistent methinks (?).

  • @projectdevelopmentuploads6930

  • @meinsouza

    still feels like he's hesitant to truly accelerate.... people don't realize that for the second serve, if you find the right angle (arm moves up more than moving forward like the first serve) you can swing your arm super fast and ball will hit serve area
