Wow you guys wanted to see this one. These are the two cameras I have spent significant time with recently. Now, this one is a bit tricky in that it's not a competition. The FX9 is clearly a better camera that produces a significantly more detailed, pleasing, and robust image with much more latitude. That being said, a lot of you guys are curious why I went with this type of camera. It's much different and very expensive. In the video, I compare the two styles of cameras and provide my context.

I am having a hard time understanding how you're comparing a camera like the a7iii built for UA-camrs to a camera like the FX9 built for cinema/doc content. It has the same sensor as the Venice which is used on a lot of big budget movies. I would not call going from A7iii to FX9 an upgrade, it's a lifestyle change, an upgrade is going from A7iii to A7riv or something like that. FX9 you need to be shooting stuff that this camera fits budget wise. You're using proprietary media, you'll need to update your backup storage in office as this is going to be much larger files, new rigs, etc, just a lot of updates if you're going to be using this camera. This isn't going to be $10,000 an boom you're rolling, lots of extras to add on. XAVC-I is also so very much different than the codecs on the mirrorless cameras. There's so much more room to work with the footage. That's like when people tell me the codecs on the Fs5ii and Fs7ii are close to the same, yet their totally different when in post and when storing them. It's not RED Raw or anything like that but still much much better than what you'll get from a mirrorless. Either way, unless your business is making enough to buy this camera cash in a month or you're to the point where you need something like this I wouldn't move up and call it an upgrade from an a7iii to fx9, you may want to meet in the middle.
Michael Cheser - Natural Visions Media I think that’s sort of the context I wanted to describe. I think with certain people getting anxious about the lack of mirrorless options from Sony. That may lead to some people either jumping to a different system, or exploring other high end options with e mount glass. It’s certainly not a fair comparison, but I hoped that it would highlight that some high end professionals would benefit from an upgrade BUT most people would be fine still shooting with the a7iii and not get sucked into the r5/s1H hype
it's a great comparison as we use these cameras side by side all the time.

You've hit on an interesting point. It's a weird one because what is the 'Meeting in the middle' for Sony. If you've become used to the look of a larger than super35 sensor and you want the features that a professional video camera overs, there is nothing in between. Moving to the A7r4 isn't really an upgrade for video and the fs5 mkii is ok but its old and your full frame lenses are going to be a bit wasted plus you don't even get that much of an upgrade in codec in 4k. The Fs7 Mkii is a wonderful camera but if you're used to autofocus and the large sensor it's almost going to feel like a downgrade in some ways.
The look of Austin's footage is great even with the a7iii, I'm sure he'll do just fine with the big purchase.
I really hope we see a middle ground in the next year or so that bridges this gap because I've had one foot in Sony and one in canon for the last two years and its not the best place to be tbh.

Sony really has to launch a new firmware for the FX9, it’s not acceptable that a professional video camera in 2020 with that form factor and price tag only shoot 4K at 60 FPS in Super 35 mode. Also, RAW internal should be available.
Otherwise it’s a very good camera with a very clean image.
Resize Films couldn’t agree more. For the price of fx9, it’s seriously lacking in spec without new firmware.
Don’t RED own the patent for internal RAW recording, hence why no one else can do it internally without some sort of extension unit...or pay RED a shit ton of cash...
Anotherfilm there’s actually many other manufacturers with RAW video internal like Arri, Blackmagic, Canon, or Kinefinity.

@@ResizeFilms BRAW isn't a Real RAW, cause of his partial debayering, Canon RAW is Ultra-Heavy on a computer and space-hungry no very efficient, Kinefinity Yes but you need tout crops if you want more fps, Arri most users use ProRES on it. RAW is hype. All professionals know that the real Camera fight in Dynamic Range. And the Kings on it are Arri first place and Sony second, RED,...
There is a lot about this video I didn't like, but I will say your grading is very nice - and that's something a lot of talking heads on UA-cam do not have a lot of skill with.

@@AustinBlackvideo Your the first guy I've seen successfully get the FX9 on a Ronin S which is really exciting. Hoping there will be some sort of way to mount the monitor onto the Ronin - S itself (similar to how others have mounted 3rd party monitors)

Have waited for your videos. Great video once again. I use a panasonic camera but I really like the look you get with the a7iii so how do you get that look. Is it mostly color grading because you make it look so good. As I am trying to improve, color grading is hard right now so I was wondering if you had any tips on how to get your look. How did you make a7iii match fx9 when shooting with a normal color profile.

Great content. I've been doing a lot of comparisons between the C500 M2 and FX9. I'm leaning towards the FX9...I personally like the image and already have an A7iii that could work as a B-Cam. Do you find the E Mount Sigma Art Lenses work well on the FX9 how they do on the A7iii? That's been my biggest hesitation, is I don't want to be locked into a lens system that is only focus by wire, but I want to be able to use autofocus for certain scenarios as well. (Interviews as well as shooting dance performances are my main uses for autofocus). Thanks man!

I own the Sony a7III and have watched a fair number of FX9 videos. Here is my current game plan. Wait for the Sony a7IV, because I like the a7III, but I want all the upgrades that the new camera will have. I am starting a business, but I decided to start with a Headshot business, (photography), because I thought it would be easier than starting with a video business. But when the next generation of Sony video cameras come out I would love to buy them. I say next gen because if I am going to pay that kind of money I want them to have 6K. I would like an FX9mkII as my "A" camera and an a7SIV as my "B" camera.

This camera is gonna support 16 bit RAW through Atomos so you bought a pretty dang good camera for future use.
RiceCube Tech the sensor has lots of room for improvement. You’ll be able to do 12 bit to a shogun 7 too! Which is really exciting

Hey Austin, I also own the FX9. I think it's a great camera in 4K but have you noticed a drastic drop in image quality when shooting in 1080p? I shot a project in 1080p a week ago and was terribly disappointed.

crossworx I definitely am liking that setup for smaller run and gun stuff, but it’s not as comfortable as the normal one

Danyal Fryer it’s highly dependent on the type of work. Primes will always perform better than zooms, but there are so many jobs that you don’t have the luxury to go slow with lenses

Braden Dam Visuals stretching the colours with 8 bit is just trash, you really lose so much on the A7iii with the colours compared to 10bit

You need to dial back the saturation in the teal and orange lut being used. Shadows don’t have a green tint in real life.

Federico Ferrario I certainly have a perspective. Like anyone would. It’s quite obvious that I’m heavily invested in the Sony ecosystem, but my thoughts are my own. I really enjoy the camera. It’s underrated and under hyped.
@@AustinBlackvideo it is already losing the market share, and sony has to impress as soon as possibile cause canon is doing the best quality now and in a compact way, really sony is old tech.. a blackmagic does a better image totally..
