Had to replace my airtag battery because well, it's not waterproof and water got in and corroded the battery.
I got some NEW duracell 2032 batteries, 5 of them, and NONE of them worked. I had no idea why but I saw a post on reddit about a bitter coating preventing the contacts from touching the new battery since it's on the edge
Most of these contact points for the battery are on the bottom but because it's on the edge, it wasn't detecting the battery.
SO I used nail polish remover and removed the coating and it worked@ - Наука та технологія

Duracell batteries now say “compatible with AirTag,” even with the coating. Worked in my AirTag.
I knew there had to be some kind of hack for this. I bet Energizer has made a ton of money because people stopped buying the Duracell. I’m so glad I found this video because I get these Duracell batteries for free at work! Great video!
Using your idea to remove the coating, I just ran it under tap water for a minute while rubbing it, dried it off, and that worked too! Thanks for the info. Saved me from purchasing a bunch of Panasonic batteries to fix this.

One key to Chris’s solution is be sure and clean the the edges…I didn’t and it didn’t work. Watched the video again and Chris specifically mentioned to be sure and clean the edges…I went back and cleaned the edges thoroughly on the Duracell battery and bingo…worked perfectly!! Thanks Chris…great service…subscribed with bell! 😊

Would’ve never guessed the bitter coat would block the current. With no nail polish remover, I tried soap and it worked as well 😊👍🏻

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Saved me. I was starting to go crazy thinking I screwed up simple instructions. My wife doesn’t wear nail polish but rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab did the trick.

I have had success without sandpaper/saliva/solvents by just taking the new coated Duracell 2032, placing it into position, then pressing it down to make contact and rotating the cell until I hear a chirp. Once you get this signal that a good contact has been made, and just put the back on the AirTag without rotating the 2032. That has worked 4 times when randomly placing the battery into position didn't. Saves a lot of time & energy. I can't vouch that this works every time or for every Duracell 2032, but it has for me. If it doesn't, there is always sandpaper which should work every time. Hope that helps.
Tried that too but it didn’t work. I acurally replaced my AirTag batteries 3xs and still didn’t work with those cosrco Duracell only after I used the nail polish remover haha
It does help to rotate the battery slowly, because after making contact it takes a bit of time to pair with your device and the chirp to occur. But if you’ve done it slowly and it doesn’t work there are other means to get the CR2032’s to work, as described here and elsewhere..

Funny, I have a ton of CR2032 batteries. I've never had an issue with coating. However, I just recently (mistakenly, since I already have so many batteries) bought Duracell CR2032 batteries as well. When I finally use them, I'll know what to do. Thanks!
I used a Energizer battery. Same ones I use for my key fob and it worked perfectly fine.

It says in the apple video on how to replace the battery that it might not work with batteries coated with the bitter coating but I couldn’t figure out how to get the coating off, this saved a lot of trouble.

Isn't that some cells (can't recall if duracell or energizer) have a different curve that do not reach the edge contacts inside airtag ?
Make sure to touch the + and - side with the wet towel at the same time ✌️

Duracell changed the side where they put the bitterant on. I recently bought Duracell CR2032 batteries where the bitterant is applied to the positive side. They probably changed it to cope with this problem.

I replace batteries in 2. No problems, but had to reset one of the 2 by putting in pressing down 5 or 6 times before replacing back till there was a different chime (per directions from apple). They actually told us to replace one battery 5 times, but pressing in and out 5 times worked. Not sure why I had to reset 1.

it should last a year +. also it does tell you it needs to be replaced as the battery is low

This would be a great tip... IF IT WORKED. Tried nail polish remover and alcohol. Scrubbed the same battery with tissue and paper towel. Did the edges, top and bottom. Repeated 3 times. No tone. Do yourself a favor and just get a compatible battery. Sad because I have a 10 pack of Dura-disappointments😒
Same for me. Then I put a bit of spit on my finger and rubbed it on the battery for a few seconds. It worked fine. Give it a try and good luck.

I would suggest, just take the coating off the side where the battery makes contact, that way if a child does put the battery in there mouth the idea of the coating will still do its job .
I just buy the direct from china 1,000 pack of 2230 batteries for $5. They don’t bother with the coating haha.
How so
I bought brand new Duracell 2032s for my Air Tags today, got the batteries right out the package. The Air Tags activated and played the sound . I did not LICK them or clean them with acetone be careful with the acetone. it eats plastic Duracell IS NOT going to clear coat their batteries and interrupt the charge I say B.S. 🤓
You can say BS all you want. But I could not get the bitter coating 2032 Duracell’s to work until I licked the coating off. Then it worked…

Man… I took 4 new 2032’s back because of the same issue. Put new one in. Same thing. Licked the battery and rubbed it hard on a rag. Then it worked. Then I found your video. Wish I had found it first. 🫤
