"Here's WHY we're doing this" is a step a lot of tutorials miss. If you teach me the how without the why, then you've told me how to do one specific thing and that's it. Tell me why and I can use it for many things and that's far more valuable and also lets me change and fix the project to my liking, instead of relying on ANOTHER tutorial to specifically tell me how to do what I want.

What that actually means is that if you don't use deltatime in your movement script, then whatever you put as speed will be for example 5 meters PER FRAME. Multiplying by time.deltatime just converts the per frame speed (which makes 0 sense) to a 5 meters PER SECOND. Let me know if that helps, it was the only way I could understand why I was doing that instead of just repeating "the time passed between current and last frame"
@@thedude110 When I was working in a team our programmer didn't understand that, and accidentally made camera panning be based off your FPS. He exclusively ran the game in the editor, and pulled 60 FPS, but the compiled game could run at 500+. Moving my mouse to the edge for a fraction of a second would move half a screen over in that direction. It was not fun.

One of my pet peeves is clicking on a video that says it's a "tutorial" in the title but when you click on it, there is no commentary at all. It's just a time-lapse of someone working on their PC.
It's kinda tutorial though if you keep following the footsteps.. it is still better than ones who keep talking things unrelated to topic and telling their stories until like half of the video is over.
This is my favorite video on the internet right now. I can't tell you how many stupid videos I go through that take 20 minutes to teach some super basic editing skill. Half the video is them advertising something, introducing themselves, talking about what they had for breakfast, throwing up their 45 second channel intro and talking about other irrelevant crap. I'M TRYING TO RELEASE MY VIDEO! I DON'T HAVE 45 MINUTES TO LEARN HOW TO BOUNCE TEXT ACROSS THE SCREEN. Jeez, I absolutely cannot stand that.
Could not agree more. I’m an editor as well. People like Peter McKinnon who think they are God’s gift to humanity and mix a 12 minute instagram video with a 4 minute tutorial, and the tutorial is average anyway. If I’m learning a computer skill I don’t even want to see your face. Why would I? It will only serve no purpose in itself or just distract me
The best tutorials are where they don't talk at all, and open up Wordpad to type in the tutorial, constantly deleting and re-typing when they get a type-o.
It really is kinda weird to think about the youtubers we feel some sort of personal caring about and the ones we don’t. I was super thrilled to see the video where the couple that makes Mango St proposed, but that’s prob because it was one vídeo after a lot of useful videos from them, and maybe also because it’s a huge milestone in someone’s life etc. If I’m looking for a tutorial on something specific and that I probably need right now, I get pretty annoyed when the author starts rambling about their personal shit and I have to search the damn thing for the part I actually need.

The worst of these are when you're trying to watch a tutorial on how to *fix* something. Usually in that kind of situation I'm stressed out and impatient already. Clicking a tutorial in that state and hearing "Alright guys I'm back with another tutorial today, seems like you all liked the last one. If you didn't watch it feel free to go check it out. I apologize for being so quiet I've just been really busy lately..." probably takes years off my life.
You need to relax. If you need to fix something it is probably not going to get much more broken before you get around to fixing it. Cooler heads prevail. At least you've made the right decision to gather information as to how to proceed. It may even be good to get a few different opinions. Not everything on the Internet is 100% accurate. Curation isn't the best, you know?
@@1pcfred I have been in that guys situation before. Some absolutely genius family member clogged the toilet during a reunion and I was sweating my ass off trying to figure out how to unclog the uncloggable before the smell spread. Clear and concise tutorials are a godsend.

I've found myself making the habit of noting the time in each channel's video where they got to the point of the video, so I can see the trend of which channels I can regularly skip ahead
I was so used to having to skip through 15 minute tutorials that I was actually scared when I clicked on one of yours and you started immediately. Props to you dude. I do think that it's good for some tutorials to be slow though, because sometimes if a guy's blazing through this program you've never used before at 2x speed it gets difficult.
At least if the only problem is 'it's too fast' then you can slow it down in the player. If you don't know WHY things are happening or stuff is skipped over though then you have a real problem
My advice is: Write a script! Less time will be wasted rambling, more opportunities to find and correct any errors, and you will have a handy text version of your tutorial available as a bonus.
Look at everything you do and say, and ask yourself these questions: "Does this sentence teach, explain, or demonstrate anything?" "What knowledge does this step assume they have?"
Obviously, the thumbnail should be a picture of the creator with his mouth wide open with a very surprised look. That always makes me want to click...on a different video.

IanHubert and his Blender "Lazy Tutorials" is one of my favourite formats ever. I know nothing about blender, but the format is so entertaining and short that I just watch every Lazy Tutorial video, although I ended watching CGMatter's the most because I loved the comedic style of the guy. He also has his Default Cube account for further details. That way the most experienced and those who just want content to watch get to see the funny, short and fast paced videos while the beginners have both the funny and the detailed versions available for the most complex ones. Edit: corrected for proper crediting as pointed out by 4yh4rv
man, what a great recommendation. Sometimes I miss a concise tutorial without explaining how to make absolutely everything. I know how to extrude in Blender, don't teach me that for the millionth time, just show me the process which includes the tool. If I have any questions about the tool, I'll look into a different tutorial
I think you ended up watching CGMatter's videos more because CGMatter has more videos. Ian uploads a video maybe once in one or two months now. But his tutorials teach some cool stuffs from ground-up; without using add-ons that do the work for you.

It's less effort than running your mouth and circling the point. People don't want to do it because then they won't have enough filler to get their video to 10 minutes and hit the monetization mark.
I disagree. As a learner and (unpopular) creator on UA-cam, I like it when the person spends time to give the overview and level set expectations. With the "chapters" feature, it's easy to set up key points so people can easily jump straight to the meat if they want to.

I am currently watching art tutorials from Brent Eviston (because I was pestered to do so), and I *really* can’t stand how much he takes too long to explain how to draw simple lines and shapes, just because he has to give me an art history lesson about how other artists I really don’t care about also use shapes and lines. Cool story, but I just wanna learn how to draw these damned lines and shapes (even though I already know how to do most of them before, but was pestered into it anyways), not attend an art history class; be more concise please! What I also can’t stand about his and some other tutorial videos is that he often likes to drag on for several minutes on what we just did previously for the past videos I just watched and how he says “In this tutorial video, we’re going to learn ____.” Why yes, thank you Captain Obvious. It’s not like I could just read the title of the video or anything. -_- *TL;DR*: Be concise (especially with tutorial or instructional videos), otherwise videos are more frustrating and tiring to watch. If it’s gonna be a long video, make it engaging (I.e. hands on activities, highlighting relevant info that’s vital to where they can take notes, etc).

For me personally, if they take too long to get to the hands on aspect (which is pretty vital for art btw), then I will have the temptation to skim videos as if it were a book. And no worries, I am able to summarize what the videos taught me/were about; I just don’t really feel “Ah ha!” about the info if they either take too long to get to the hands on aspect or they don’t have any at all in general.
What really annoys me are when they ask me to "like" the video in the beginning of the video. I will watch the video first and then rate the video based on my experience with it, or forget about rating it because you asked me in the beginning and not the end. God I hate that
@@1pcfred I agree that it is getting old, but you know what? If you don't ask, you don't get things that you want. People will forget to like a video they like unless reminded. It happens to me all the time. I've gone back to videos I thought were excellent and liked them because I forgot to do so. I think it is the least we can do for those providing quality content.
One thing I've been doing in the last couple of months is, whenever I see a tutorial for anything, I leave a comment with the timestamp of where the actual teaching begins (it's usually around 3-5 minutes into the video), along with the comment "here it is, don't waste your time". I'm glad someone finally made a video about this topic, I hate when the first thing some people do is asking you to like and sub, and I am like "dude calm down, I haven't even watched your video, let me see if you don't suck first" haha.
Tell me about it! Like, I get that it's "good marketing" to remind people to like and subscribe, but provide a service before you ask for something in return. I'm not gonna like or subscribe if I don't know what value the video/channel brings me. In fact, I rarely subscribe after just one video even if I like it. I've seen too many "one good video" in a sea of other stuff I don't care about on people's channels.

Bruh, fucking thank you. Every time I watch a goddamn tutorial, it sucks. I started animating some and speaking as rapidly as I can. It turned out great for me. They get tons of views. No LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE. No bullshit. No wasting my time.
Always always always show the finished product at the start so the viewer knows what they'll be making. I will straight up abandon any tutorials that don't do this.
@@slBrelaz Hard disagree. Nothing frustrates me more than to get halfway through a video, only to realize that they're not even doing what I expected to get from the video. Not only that, but it's much easier to understand what they're doing and why, when I know what the goal is. A lot less confusion this way. Now I don't mean a lengthy showcasing. the 15 seconds of the hook is plenty of time to show this off. If they spend too long showing off then yeah, I don't like that either.
@@slBrelaz Depending on the project, 1 minute may be enough, and if it needs up to 5 minutes to showcase all the things you can learn in the tutorial, so be it (but this better be a long and complete tutorial).
It's also easy to just press 9 on the keyboard to get close to the end, notice that it's not at all what you wanted to see, and then abandon the video.
I think a big problem is youtubers "talking down" to their audience. As if everyone on the internet is a complete spastic aside from them. It's especially annoying when the people who are talking down to you are like, 10 years younger than you and you can tell they're full of shit/dont actually know what they're saying. The only thing worse than that, is that with 2mil subscribers behind it. That's how you end up killing millions, or starting wars at least. Those kinds of channels can (and do) spread incredible amounts of misinformation and not all of it is harmless...

I teach math 1on1 in real life, and you never know what the person that has come to you is missing in their knowledge to truly understand the concept, so rather than trying to dig it up, just teach it like you teach a complete moron - not out of disrespect, but to make sure no stone is left unturned. So what if you are smart or smarter? The point is to understand, not to know.
This explained the issues i have with many tutorials out there. I find myself clicking on a video and skipping the majority of it becuase they don't finally get to the point until halfway through the viddeo. The ones i watch from start to finish are well explained and to the point and usually provide links to the resources used in the video.
the worst part is when you do that, miss a tiny detail, and end up having to go back and watch the whole thing because you dont know where they sad the one detail double wasting your time.
my favorite thing is when i look up a tutorial for something, and instead of someone telling you what to do verbally, they have notepad open and type the steps extremely fucking slowly making mistakes the entire way, making sure to wait a full 2 seconds between each backspace before correcting each mistake.
This is what more tutorials need to see. This is why I just prefer to read about tutorials than watch them. That's not always an option with some things, but I prefer it more because I can read at my pace, which is usually faster and filled with less fluff.
Pfft its all lies, everyone knows that a good programming tutorial has a middle aged man with an indian accent, random keyboard noises and sound of 5 extremely loud fans(one of which is for the person not the pc).

I don’t know why but I swear every Indian tutor I have found has explained their subject SO FREAKIN WELL compared to anyone I have found. They are the ones who save me after struggling for hours on something.
Woah, this is a very useful video, thanks. Especially copy-pasting part of code if a video is for advanced programmers. But people see the video duration so putting "in 10 minutes" in the title is redundant just like saying "I'm John and we're doing this" at the beginning.
If what youre doing can be done in a very accessible amount of time, it's good to put that in your title so people are immediately told that this tutorial is short and sweet without having to do even the smallest amount of investigation.
Saying that you can do x in 10 minutes in a video that is 11 minutes long tells the viewer that they are actually getting 10 minutes of tutorial, whereas having an 11 minute video with a bunch of time wasted might not contain even 8 minutes of useful content. It makes sense

Do you happen to be native english speaker? Cause I often see comments about how people watch youtube 2x speed but always when I try it, I kinda recognize the words but I dont get the point what they are talking about
@@Rektonator If 2x is too fast for you, do 1.5x it or even 1.25x. eventually you'll get used to it and you can increase the speed. Tutorial videos require zero thought on your part, so absorbing the information at 2x speed is pretty easy once you get used to it. If you're trying to consider the implications of what's being said while you're listening, that'll slow down how quickly you can absorb the information, so leave that for after you've finished listening.
@@blueyc4rter There is a Chrome addon "Video Speed Controller" which lets you speed up/slow down Netflix shows. I think it works for all videos, but Netflix is the only platform I have seen without native speed controls.

as someone who learned motion design/animation via dense tutorials.... ALL of this still applies. I can't tell you how may times I've seen a cool thumbnail only to have to skip 30% into the video just to see them open the animation program. The creators who have kept me learning and coming back mostly follow these rules, even if they don't know it. Keep up the good work, Miziziziz! I'm a complete armature when it comes to dev or game design but I watch your stuff because you make it possible to grasp and follow even at that level. Also, it's funny as hell

I love you. I have many pet peeves with UA-cam tutorials myself, but the biggest one is intros. I read your title, I saw your thumbnail, and you've sold me to click on your video. Why now do I have to sit through 30 seconds to a minute of you explaining what I know is about to be presented? It's like if you went to the movies but instead of showing trailers for other movies they just showed trailers for the movie you're about to watch.
I was making a video tutorial and I explicitly told myself "Not i'm not gonna sit there and go 'hey guys it's ya boi' or some dumb nonsense like that" and then I proceeded to put together a 5 minute long intro describing all the shit I promised to do, INCLUDING and hilariously, a promise not to waste anyone's time _going foward_. And then i saw this video's thumbnail. And it caused me to cut that 5 minute into down to 4 seconds, and I'm considering ditching that too right now
I watch this every couple of weeks to keep me motivated on what makes a good tutorial. It helped me improve my second one, and I’m hoping to make the third even more efficient.
Another tip: not every tutorial has to start from the beginning, especially not advanced ones, if you are showing how to make some specific shader or something, don't spend the first half of the video setting up the basic project adding meshes and setting up input contols, just a quick description of 'start a new project with X and Y', maybe link to another tutorial showing the basics
I believe timestamps are a better idea. I don't think a beginner would like to watch another video before watching this one. Adding timestamps gives something for everyone.

Some great tips, and here's another. You can add time stamps in the description, like "1:23 intro 2:34 setting it up" etc. each on a new line. That way YT will automatically divide the video progressbar into sections with labels, so people can find what they are looking for more easily.

No, don't do that. Pauses in speech are important for better (and quicker) understanding. If you cut out longer silences and 'ahhm's, put in a short snippet of silence *from the recording*, using total silence sounds unnatural.
@@spotlight-kyd This is correct. Not to mention that when you cut out silences, the viewer tends to automatically hold their breath unintentionally as well. Since there's no pause in between sentences. Hearing someone breathe and talk naturally isn't bad per se
I've found that in the relentless pursuit of not wasting people's time, videos end up quite short and acquire less watch time than videos that do waste time, leading to algorithmic preference for the time wasting videos about 75% of the time. Some of them do end up doing well in search, but they have to be much more compelling than the competition to rank well in search results. I still make short, to-the-point videos, partially because I stubbornly resist being guided by algorithms, but because it's what I would actually want to find if I was looking for a solution, and I feel like that was conveyed well here without outright saying it. Great video!
I would also recommend putting the version number of the tool/engine/program you are using in the title. The number of times I've seen "Making [thing] in Blender!" only to find it's for a version that's just outdated enough to be near impossible to replicate in the newest version makes me want people to do that so much.
@@ThePongles people don't like overly long titles, either... in any case, you're forced to give the video a view if the subject interests you because they do not typically give enough information about themselves just from a casual glance.

@@ThePongles still doesn't attest much to the quality of the tutorial though... could be a tutorial for the latest version, you click it, and it's trash... also, what about the fact versions don't always add breaking changes? '[3.4.1]' implies it won't work on [4.5.2] and if you have created several such tutorials, that's a lot of effort updating the title to reflect the latest version every time it's out... then you have games/engines that update automatically and frequently [like roblox] where keeping-up with the version just isn't feasible... eventually, they'll just break something and you're kinda screwed...

He exclusively ran the game in the editor, and pulled 60 FPS, but the compiled game could run at 500+. Moving my mouse to the edge for a fraction of a second would move half a screen over in that direction. It was not fun.

It really is kinda weird to think about the youtubers we feel some sort of personal caring about and the ones we don’t. I was super thrilled to see the video where the couple that makes Mango St proposed, but that’s prob because it was one vídeo after a lot of useful videos from them, and maybe also because it’s a huge milestone in someone’s life etc.
If I’m looking for a tutorial on something specific and that I probably need right now, I get pretty annoyed when the author starts rambling about their personal shit and I have to search the damn thing for the part I actually need.

The worst of these are when you're trying to watch a tutorial on how to *fix* something. Usually in that kind of situation I'm stressed out and impatient already.
Clicking a tutorial in that state and hearing "Alright guys I'm back with another tutorial today, seems like you all liked the last one. If you didn't watch it feel free to go check it out. I apologize for being so quiet I've just been really busy lately..." probably takes years off my life.
You need to relax. If you need to fix something it is probably not going to get much more broken before you get around to fixing it. Cooler heads prevail. At least you've made the right decision to gather information as to how to proceed. It may even be good to get a few different opinions. Not everything on the Internet is 100% accurate. Curation isn't the best, you know?
@@1pcfred I have been in that guys situation before. Some absolutely genius family member clogged the toilet during a reunion and I was sweating my ass off trying to figure out how to unclog the uncloggable before the smell spread. Clear and concise tutorials are a godsend.

I've found myself making the habit of noting the time in each channel's video where they got to the point of the video, so I can see the trend of which channels I can regularly skip ahead
As a tutorial channel myself I found this very helpful thank you! This is the exact kinda advice I was looking for to improve my content
I was so used to having to skip through 15 minute tutorials that I was actually scared when I clicked on one of yours and you started immediately. Props to you dude. I do think that it's good for some tutorials to be slow though, because sometimes if a guy's blazing through this program you've never used before at 2x speed it gets difficult.
At least if the only problem is 'it's too fast' then you can slow it down in the player. If you don't know WHY things are happening or stuff is skipped over though then you have a real problem
I think it is just bad when the guy just shows the steps. While explaining every important step slows the video on the right parts naturally.
My advice is: Write a script!
Less time will be wasted rambling, more opportunities to find and correct any errors, and you will have a handy text version of your tutorial available as a bonus.
Look at everything you do and say, and ask yourself these questions:
"Does this sentence teach, explain, or demonstrate anything?"
"What knowledge does this step assume they have?"
Plus a script makes it easy to add subtitles
Obviously, the thumbnail should be a picture of the creator with his mouth wide open with a very surprised look. That always makes me want to click...on a different video.

IanHubert and his Blender "Lazy Tutorials" is one of my favourite formats ever. I know nothing about blender, but the format is so entertaining and short that I just watch every Lazy Tutorial video, although I ended watching CGMatter's the most because I loved the comedic style of the guy.
He also has his Default Cube account for further details. That way the most experienced and those who just want content to watch get to see the funny, short and fast paced videos while the beginners have both the funny and the detailed versions available for the most complex ones.

I disagree. As a learner and (unpopular) creator on UA-cam, I like it when the person spends time to give the overview and level set expectations. With the "chapters" feature, it's easy to set up key points so people can easily jump straight to the meat if they want to.

I am currently watching art tutorials from Brent Eviston (because I was pestered to do so), and I *really* can’t stand how much he takes too long to explain how to draw simple lines and shapes, just because he has to give me an art history lesson about how other artists I really don’t care about also use shapes and lines.
Cool story, but I just wanna learn how to draw these damned lines and shapes (even though I already know how to do most of them before, but was pestered into it anyways), not attend an art history class; be more concise please!
What I also can’t stand about his and some other tutorial videos is that he often likes to drag on for several minutes on what we just did previously for the past videos I just watched and how he says “In this tutorial video, we’re going to learn ____.”

Apologies on the long rant. I just feel as if time is of the essence irl. For me personally, if they take too long to get to the hands on aspect (which is pretty vital for art btw), then I will have the temptation to skim videos as if it were a book.
And no worries, I am able to summarize what the videos taught me/were about; I just don’t really feel “Ah ha!” about the info if they either take too long to get to the hands on aspect or they don’t have any at all in general.

One thing I've been doing in the last couple of months is, whenever I see a tutorial for anything, I leave a comment with the timestamp of where the actual teaching begins (it's usually around 3-5 minutes into the video), along with the comment "here it is, don't waste your time". I'm glad someone finally made a video about this topic, I hate when the first thing some people do is asking you to like and sub, and I am like "dude calm down, I haven't even watched your video, let me see if you don't suck first" haha.
Tell me about it! Like, I get that it's "good marketing" to remind people to like and subscribe, but provide a service before you ask for something in return. I'm not gonna like or subscribe if I don't know what value the video/channel brings me. In fact, I rarely subscribe after just one video even if I like it. I've seen too many "one good video" in a sea of other stuff I don't care about on people's channels.

@@slBrelaz Hard disagree. Nothing frustrates me more than to get halfway through a video, only to realize that they're not even doing what I expected to get from the video. Not only that, but it's much easier to understand what they're doing and why, when I know what the goal is. A lot less confusion this way.
Now I don't mean a lengthy showcasing. the 15 seconds of the hook is plenty of time to show this off. If they spend too long showing off then yeah, I don't like that either.
@@slBrelaz Depending on the project, 1 minute may be enough, and if it needs up to 5 minutes to showcase all the things you can learn in the tutorial, so be it (but this better be a long and complete tutorial).
It's also easy to just press 9 on the keyboard to get close to the end, notice that it's not at all what you wanted to see, and then abandon the video.

My most hated trope is when you find a tutorial "HOW TO DO THE THING" and they spend 5 minutes up front explaining why you'd want to do the thing.
I think a big problem is youtubers "talking down" to their audience. As if everyone on the internet is a complete spastic aside from them. It's especially annoying when the people who are talking down to you are like, 10 years younger than you and you can tell they're full of shit/dont actually know what they're saying.
The only thing worse than that, is that with 2mil subscribers behind it. That's how you end up killing millions, or starting wars at least. Those kinds of channels can (and do) spread incredible amounts of misinformation and not all of it is harmless...

I teach math 1on1 in real life, and you never know what the person that has come to you is missing in their knowledge to truly understand the concept, so rather than trying to dig it up, just teach it like you teach a complete moron - not out of disrespect, but to make sure no stone is left unturned. So what if you are smart or smarter? The point is to understand, not to know.
This explained the issues i have with many tutorials out there. I find myself clicking on a video and skipping the majority of it becuase they don't finally get to the point until halfway through the viddeo. The ones i watch from start to finish are well explained and to the point and usually provide links to the resources used in the video.
the worst part is when you do that, miss a tiny detail, and end up having to go back and watch the whole thing because you dont know where they sad the one detail double wasting your time.

This is what more tutorials need to see. This is why I just prefer to read about tutorials than watch them. That's not always an option with some things, but I prefer it more because I can read at my pace, which is usually faster and filled with less fluff.

But people see the video duration so putting "in 10 minutes" in the title is redundant just like saying "I'm John and we're doing this" at the beginning.
If what youre doing can be done in a very accessible amount of time, it's good to put that in your title so people are immediately told that this tutorial is short and sweet without having to do even the smallest amount of investigation.

Saying that you can do x in 10 minutes in a video that is 11 minutes long tells the viewer that they are actually getting 10 minutes of tutorial, whereas having an 11 minute video with a bunch of time wasted might not contain even 8 minutes of useful content. It makes sense

Do you happen to be native english speaker? Cause I often see comments about how people watch youtube 2x speed but always when I try it, I kinda recognize the words but I dont get the point what they are talking about
@@Rektonator If 2x is too fast for you, do 1.5x it or even 1.25x. eventually you'll get used to it and you can increase the speed. Tutorial videos require zero thought on your part, so absorbing the information at 2x speed is pretty easy once you get used to it. If you're trying to consider the implications of what's being said while you're listening, that'll slow down how quickly you can absorb the information, so leave that for after you've finished listening.

@@blueyc4rter There is a Chrome addon "Video Speed Controller" which lets you speed up/slow down Netflix shows. I think it works for all videos, but Netflix is the only platform I have seen without native speed controls.

I don’t even know what his channel is about but I just subscribed because I feel respected as a viewer. No immediate begging for a subscription, no annoying adds, no “smash that like button”. It’s refreshing.
So many youtube channels where 75% of the video is completely irrelevant, just people saying words without meaning to pad out a lack of content. For that reason, I love you.
as someone who learned motion design/animation via dense tutorials.... ALL of this still applies. I can't tell you how may times I've seen a cool thumbnail only to have to skip 30% into the video just to see them open the animation program. The creators who have kept me learning and coming back mostly follow these rules, even if they don't know it. Keep up the good work,

I have many pet peeves with UA-cam tutorials myself, but the biggest one is intros. I read your title, I saw your thumbnail, and you've sold me to click on your video. Why now do I have to sit through 30 seconds to a minute of you explaining what I know is about to be presented? It's like if you went to the movies but instead of showing trailers for other movies they just showed trailers for the movie you're about to watch.
I wish everyone was like you. Video editing tutorials are the bane of my existance

I was making a video tutorial and I explicitly told myself "Not i'm not gonna sit there and go 'hey guys it's ya boi' or some dumb nonsense like that" and then I proceeded to put together a 5 minute long intro describing all the shit I promised to do, INCLUDING and hilariously, a promise not to waste anyone's time _going foward_. And then i saw this video's thumbnail. And it caused me to cut that 5 minute into down to 4 seconds, and I'm considering ditching that too right now

I watch this every couple of weeks to keep me motivated on what makes a good tutorial. It helped me improve my second one, and I’m hoping to make the third even more efficient.

Another tip: not every tutorial has to start from the beginning, especially not advanced ones, if you are showing how to make some specific shader or something, don't spend the first half of the video setting up the basic project adding meshes and setting up input contols, just a quick description of 'start a new project with X and Y', maybe link to another tutorial showing the basics
I believe timestamps are a better idea. I don't think a beginner would like to watch another video before watching this one.
Adding timestamps gives something for everyone.

this isn't what I was looking for when I searched but I wanted to say I appreciate how quick concise it was anyway.
Some great tips, and here's another. You can add time stamps in the description, like "1:23 intro 2:34 setting it up" etc. each on a new line. That way YT will automatically divide the video progressbar into sections with labels, so people can find what they are looking for more easily.

This is the best carreer advice ever, not just for gamedev tutorials but software development in particular. I've seen so many unintuitive GUIs, cryptic errors, incomplete documentation etc.
Actually I prefer tutorials that show the result in the beginning so I can decide whether I want to do it without having to skip to the back
The most useful (and my favorite) youtube tutorial I've ever found was like 3 seconds long and said exactly what to do.

simple trick: after recording just speed up your voice by 10%, cut out the silent parts and "ahhhms"
No, don't do that. Pauses in speech are important for better (and quicker) understanding. If you cut out longer silences and 'ahhm's, put in a short snippet of silence *from the recording*, using total silence sounds unnatural.
@@spotlight-kyd This is correct. Not to mention that when you cut out silences, the viewer tends to automatically hold their breath unintentionally as well. Since there's no pause in between sentences. Hearing someone breathe and talk naturally isn't bad per se

I've found that in the relentless pursuit of not wasting people's time, videos end up quite short and acquire less watch time than videos that do waste time, leading to algorithmic preference for the time wasting videos about 75% of the time. Some of them do end up doing well in search, but they have to be much more compelling than the competition to rank well in search results.
I still make short, to-the-point videos, partially because I stubbornly resist being guided by algorithms, but because it's what I would actually want to find if I was looking for a solution, and I feel like that was conveyed well here without outright saying it. Great video!
This made me laugh out loud at the humor and clap at the end for practicing what you teach. Very impressive.
I would also recommend putting the version number of the tool/engine/program you are using in the title. The number of times I've seen "Making [thing] in Blender!" only to find it's for a version that's just outdated enough to be near impossible to replicate in the newest version makes me want people to do that so much.
maybe not in the title, but definitely in the description or the intro of the video [or a pinned comment], etc...

@@ThePongles people don't like overly long titles, either... in any case, you're forced to give the video a view if the subject interests you because they do not typically give enough information about themselves just from a casual glance.
@@ETXAlienRobot201 them not giving enough info at a casual glance is the issue. A simple '[3.4.1]' or similar in the title isn't going to cause normal viewers to turn away.
@@ThePongles still doesn't attest much to the quality of the tutorial though... could be a tutorial for the latest version, you click it, and it's trash...
also, what about the fact versions don't always add breaking changes? '[3.4.1]' implies it won't work on [4.5.2] and if you have created several such tutorials, that's a lot of effort updating the title to reflect the latest version every time it's out...
then you have games/engines that update automatically and frequently [like roblox] where keeping-up with the version just isn't feasible... eventually, they'll just break something and you're kinda screwed...
