Diatomaceous earth has been brilliant Chris :-D I hadn't used it before until last Autumn and I have been really impressed with it, it completely got rid of Mealies on my very woolly cacti and Echinocereus 'Rainbow' as it was impossible to reach them with the rubbing alcohol or Neem oil as I couldn't get in between the very tight spines and wool, but the Diatomaceous earth I could puff right into the wool and tight spined cacti, and I left a dusting of the D.E on them over the Winter months, and when I washed it off this Spring all the Mealies were gone, its fantastic to sprinkle onto the plant trays too to prevent any pests travelling to other plants, thanks so much Chris for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Galway for a terrific Thursday XXXX
This is a great video for me. I’m very new to Cacti keeping and worry that I don’t spot pests. My first cactus was a large ferocactus from Lidl. I noticed the new spines were wobbly and panicked thinking invisible mealy bug or spider mite were munching my cactus spines. I dragged the poor thing out of the pot and soaked it in hot water and peroxide ( daughters a hairdresser ) overnight. Then soaked it in isopropyl for a few hours determined to kill all those invisible bugs. I then thought I would leave it out to dry for a few days to see if I could see any. By this time the whole plant including roots were sparkling clean but I thought they must be hiding in the fluffy bits on top. There was nothing else to do but pluck those wobbly spines out and soak again and scrub the fluffy bits in more isopropyl and hot water. I planted him back in the pot a week later. I’m sure this is definitely plant torture as well as trauma ( to me 😂) It’s still alive and growing new spines but I found out later that sometimes ferocactus new spines are wobbly. There were probably no bugs there after all 😅 Phew !!
So happy you enjoyed the video Susan :-D and LOL! at least your Ferocactus will be 100% pest free, and its good that you acted the way you did in case there was any hidden insect pests, and thats wonderful news your ferocactus is growing new spines, the new spines can feel a bit wobbly and then they go much harder as they mature, thanks so much Susan for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX

Thanks for making this video Lynn I have 2 cereus spirilis cacti that I am trying to root right now that are rather large, I got them back in the winter time and waited probably too long to get them into soil so they are taking a while to root, but I have been dealing with them having mealybugs and I treated them with some Neem oil but they seem to be very sensitive to light and actually burnt as soon as I put them outside so I currently have them under a shade cloth. is it OK to use neem oil on cacti that have not completely rooted yet and are already dehydrated? I actually had quite a few cacti and succulents sitting around that I had gotten during the winter and just got around now to potting them up. I have a few epithalanthas one of which a is a bokei that I really care about and they seem like they are taking forever to take root. not only have I not seen any new growth, but even though I water them every time the soil is completely dried out they are still really shrunken and I am wondering if there’s anything I can do to help them along because I really don’t want to lose them. I had moved them closer to a window so that they could get some sunlight because I originally had had them in the shade & i’m hoping that the sun will maybe help them grow roots and just start growing in general but I am thinking about moving them away from the window as they seem like they are just beginning to shrink even more. but that was my question, do you think it is OK to spray them with neem oil if they are already really dehydrated? I have read not to use neem oil on plants that are dehydrated because it can kill them and so I am wondering if I should just hold off until I find that they have plumped up a bit? The reason why I am wondering is because I have been dealing with a horrible spider mite infestation that came out of nowhere, and the raspberry plant that was completely infested is located right outside the patio screen door where they are ( my cactus collection) and I have began to notice webbing and stuff like that so I’m sure that they are probably spread everywhere with my luck. 😢 I definitely don’t want them to become overtaken by spider mites if they already are because I’m already struggling with them rooting, A spider mite attack is the last thing that I need with them! I also noticed when I used neem oil on my small epithalantha greggiis The following day they actually burned a little although they are behind the shade of my screen door, I guess with the intense heat and being behind glass It was not a good idea, maybe because of all of their very fine dense spines all over their body the oil gets trapped instead of just gliding down and drying off like most cacti? But do you think I should hold off on the neem oil on the cacti that are dehydrated and still waiting on them to root? and I am wondering if I wasn’t to use neem oil I wonder what else I could use to try to help with the spider mites? I have heard that sulfur powder is supposed to be good against fighting spider mites it actually says on the bag to use to prevent mites, but sulfur powder is yellow and I would wonder if that somehow would stain the cacti or if it would be safe to dust them with that?? not sure if you’ve ever tried using sulfur powder as a miticide? sorry I know that that is a long message but I had a lot to explain and thank you so much for always responding to all of my many questions!! and thanks so much for the wonderful video! Scale is another thing I have been dealing with on a Polaskia cutting that I have & it has a lot of corking And marks as it was sunburnt last year. & actually fell out of the pot before it could root so I have it just sitting on my patio( I was afraid to pot it up because of how large it is until I deal with the issue) and I have used 75% alcohol sprayed all over the cacti and the marks did not disappear so I wasn’t sure if it was scale that I was dealing with or just natural markings. some of these bumps are very big and orange looking and they do have the dot in the center so I thought they might be scale but even after using alcohol they have not disappeared so maybe I need to use a stronger strength or maybe it is just natural markings which would be such a relief! I have been trying to find someone that I can send a picture to to see if they can identify what they are. I think I am going to try to find the stronger solution alcohol that you use and try that again and see if I have better luck. have a wonderful weekend and thanks in advance for all of your help!
Thank you for sharing this Lynn! I get really confused what is scale and what is just part of the cactus I’m still not sure if I have scale or not on one of mine although I have treated them with alcohol and they still exist so I’m assuming based off what you’ve shown here it’s just some kind of scar or corking type thing.
So happy you loved the video Sheri :-D it can be so confusing with scale and natural scabbing as they can look so similar, the good news if the scars still exist after using the alcohol its very likely due to natural scars and corking, thanks so much Sheri for your wonderful comment and support and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday today XXXX
This is very interesting because I’m just getting into cactus and I don’t know Jack speaking of that we spoke a couple weeks ago and I told you that I purchased a monkey tail cactus well I’ve got the pot and I bought some bonsai Jack succulent soil but the man that I purchased the cactus from said that it drains really fast so I have to water it more so what do you suggest that I put in it to retain a little bit more water I’m thinking perlite but I don’t know I don’t know anything about cactus if you could just let me know I love your videos specially being a newbie
Hi Dannette :-D So happy you love my videos, and thats wonderful you are getting into cactus, the Bonsai Jacks succulent soil is perfect for the Monkey tail cactus, and its so good to use a well draining cactus and succulent soil with this cactus, You dont need to add anything else to the soil as the Bonsai jacks soil is good quality, and is well draining and dries out fast in between waterings, and the Monkeys tail cactus prefers to dry out fast after it has been watered, and its best to only water again only when the soil has totally dried out in the pot and doesn't like to be kept in wet soil for too long, the Monkeys tail can take more regular watering than many of the other types of cacti but still prefer to have a soil that drains really fast, your wonderful new Monkeys tail cactus will love the Bonsai Jacks soil, thanks so much Danette for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX

What makes some cacti species more prone to scale? Do you by chance have any videos on fungal spot disease and treatment for it, which can be confused with scale when your not as experienced. (Like me, lol).
Scale is such a pest, and some cacti like the Cereus spiralis and Hylocereus 'Dragon Fruit' and Epiphylllums are very prone to the dreaded scale, I think its because they are less spiny and I don't seem to notice any scale on the more spinier or woollier cacti, I haven't any videos on fungal spot disease but I will definitely plan on making one as fungal spot can be a real problem for cacti and succulents, I usually use a copper based systemic fungicide if I notice any signs of fungal spot on my plants and it works well at stopping it from spreading, thanks so much Bennie for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX
