  • Driving Downtown - Houston Texas USA - Episode 38.
    Starting Point: goo.gl/maps/jo... .
Houston is the most populous city in Texas and the fourth-most populous city in the United States. With a census-estimated 2014 population of 2.2 million, it also is the largest city in the Southern United States.
Houston's economy has a broad industrial base in energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, and transportation. It is also leading in health care sectors and building oilfield equipment; only New York City is home to more Fortune 500 headquarters within its city limits.[11][12] The Port of Houston ranks first in the United States in international waterborne tonnage handled and second in total cargo tonnage handled.[13] Nicknamed the "Space City", Houston is a global city, with strengths in business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine, and research. The city has a population from various ethnic and religious backgrounds and a large and growing international community. Houston is the most diverse city in Texas and has been described as the most diverse in the United States.[14] It is home to many cultural institutions and exhibits, which attract more than 7 million visitors a year to the Museum District. Houston has an active visual and performing arts scene in the Theater District and offers year-round resident companies in all major performing arts.
    Architecture
Houston has the fourth-tallest skyline in North America (after New York City, Chicago, and Toronto) and 12th-tallest in the world, as of 2014.
    Economy
Houston is recognized worldwide for its energy industry-particularly for oil and natural gas-as well as for biomedical research and aeronautics. Renewable energy sources-wind and solar-are also growing economic bases in the city.[99][100] The Houston Ship Channel is also a large part of Houston's economic base.
The Houston area is a leading center for building oilfield equipment.[103] Much of its success as a petrochemical complex is due to its busy ship channel, the Port of Houston.[104] In the United States, the port ranks first in international commerce and 10th among the largest ports in the world.[13][105] Unlike most places, high oil and gasoline prices are beneficial for Houston's economy, as many of its residents are employed in the energy industry.[106] Houston is the beginning or end point of numerous oil, gas, and products pipelines.
    Tourism and Recreation
The Theater District is a 17-block area in the center of downtown Houston that is home to the Bayou Place entertainment complex, restaurants, movies, plazas, and parks. Bayou Place is a large multilevel building containing full-service restaurants, bars, live music, billiards, and Sundance Cinema. The Bayou Music Center stages live concerts, stage plays, and stand-up comedy. Space Center Houston is the official visitors' center of NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. The Space Center has many interactive exhibits including moon rocks, a shuttle simulator, and presentations about the history of NASA's manned space flight program. Other tourist attractions include the Galleria (Texas's largest shopping mall, located in the Uptown District), Old Market Square, the Downtown Aquarium, and Sam Houston Race Park.
    Sports
Houston has sports teams for every major professional league except the National Hockey League. The Houston Astros are a Major League Baseball expansion team formed in 1962. The Houston Rockets are a National Basketball Association franchise based in the city since 1971. The Houston Texans are a National Football League expansion team formed in 2002. The Houston Dynamo is a Major League Soccer franchise that has been based in Houston since 2006.
    Healthcare
Houston is the seat of the internationally renowned Texas Medical Center, which contains the world's largest concentration of research and healthcare institutions.[196] All 49 member institutions of the Texas Medical Center are non-profit organizations. They provide patient and preventive care, research, education, and local, national, and international community well-being.

My brother lives in Houston and he talks about the gentrification of the city from downtown heading outwards. There's no zoning laws so you will see town homes right next to an old ranch style house right next to an apartment complex across the street. The sky lines were springing up a few years ago and have slowed down the past year.

To those of you wondering where all the people are....we are all inside enjoying the air conditioning. It is toooooooo hot to be out walking around. When it is in the 90s, it feels like it in in the 100s on the concrete sidewalks downtown! There is a large underground tunnel system where many people walk from one building to another. It has restaurants and stores and air conditioining! There are almost no stores above ground, just office buildings; thus there is no reason to be out in the heat walking around. We are all underground:) Also, the publish date Aug. 26 was a Sunday. So this was probably filmed on a weekend. Weekdays, the streets are full of cars.

Nancy Holdamlpf Funny how its just as empty when the weather is 75 degrees, you people are all in denial and are delusional, the fact of the matter is that downtown Houston is mostly empty because its a 9-5 office park, and everyone drives back home after work to the suburbs, including everyone in those tunnels.

I'm from Philly, and I stayed in Houston for a while. Philly is a walkable city, I assumed the same in Houston. I was wondering where is everyone. I took a long walk and my relatives where calling me asking me why am I walking. I said to look around. They were like....why? I'm like huh?! Big difference in Houston.

Houston is huge, over 600 sq miles twice the size of NYC. It's like a gigantic suburb with superhighways everywhere. Most streets have a on ramp to a highway somewhere.

    Thanks for the tour.
I grew up in Houston, moved in the 60's, but that is where I left my heart.
What some people do not realize is that this is mostly the business center. There are several other centers.
If you put the Medical Center, the Museum District, the Galleria/Uptown area, City Centre, River Oaks District, and others, all downtown , you would have a much different downtown. There is virtually no retail downtown.
There are tunnels connecting a lot of the buildings. And there are bridges connecting others. That is why you do not see a lot of people on the streets.

Grew up here and don’t miss the city vibe. Hot and empty. Everyone’s in their cars. Unnecessary noise. No scenic viewpoints except the tops of a few buildings if they allow you up. Anyone who LOVES this city must not have spent much time in other cities. Even LA is similar in terms of size and population but at least it’s somewhere people are out walking around and socializing, with gathering squares all over. It feels alive. Same for San Francisco, or Boulder, or Miami, or Atlanta, or NYC, or Portland, or Seattle... I could go on. It’s just weird to me that Houston often feels so empty and lame when you’re walking around the city during the day.

Mostly homeless people tho! out and roaming the streets begging && harassing people just ask Elon musk tht was the whole reason he relocated not only himself But also his businesses to Texas in the first place And the fact you said L.A of all places you could’ve said only shows you wouldn’t know beauty && vibrant if they both came up and slapped you in the face🤣

I worked in the chase building downtown for 3 years, this was probably on a weekend with no events. Downtown is filled with people on week days in the tunnels and streets. Weekend nights is filled with people bar hopping or simply walking the streets. I have heard many complements from people visiting from other states.

That's because Australia actually puts some thought into designing their cities while in Texas, they don't even have city planners. Anybody can just build anything, anywhere, so when you let the free market determine your city, this is what you get. I would hate to live in a city where there is no urban heart or anywhere fun/interesting to hang out. I don't see one single nice street for shopping or dining or nightlife or anything, just boring office towers everywhere. Sydney and Melbourne both put this place to shame! I love the new buildings in Sydney! King's Cross is cooler than anything here!

WroughtIronMGTOW No dude that's just one thing. I was more along the lines of Yosemite National Park, Wine Country, Big Sur, sweeping and rolling hills of SF, I can't even list everything you can do in SF or LA for that matter; Point Reyes, San Diego, San Simeon, Half Moon Bay, the Sierra Nevada, Death Valley National Park, the Shasta Cascades, Mendocino County, the Redwood Forests. I could literally go on and on but it would be too much to read. Those are the things that attract those 12 million tourists to our state and its also what makes us the most visited state by Americans. Even I explored the state from top to bottom. And people here in Houston know what I'm talking about if they've been there but most people here haven't so they just think we have Disneyland. Its kinda sad, no one travels here. You could find yourself in a place like California. I'd definitely be a different person if I grew up here in Texas.

No, I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm just observing what I've seen in a number of videos, so if I am wrong and Houston is a lively, vibrant city, post a video of it or point me to one, where downtown Houston is vibrant and happening! Show me the evidence and educate me! @@lawsonbujanos7624

Houston is for the hard- working American, the hustler who rewards themselves during the weekend after a long week at work by going to either Midtown, Main St, Washington St or all the other clubs. Not to mention mini getaways at Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, New Braunfels,Galveston. Millennials currently reside in Downtown, Galleria, Medical District or Midtown/Montrose. Home to the Rockets, Texans, Dynamo and our World Series champions, the Astro’s.

Honestly i think that Texas is one of the states to live in the US , However it's disadvantages specially the weather absolutely, but i think it has a lot of advantages like low prices of houses compared to other states, no income tax, there's a lot of opportunities to grow up there for getting a job or great up a family , there's something special in this state idk why really i feel in love with Texas more than any other states, does anyone living there tell me what's the thing that let someone love's Texas so much?

Wow, this was hard to watch! Houston's downtown seems like the world's largest office park. Not only was the downtown virtually empty, it seems quite disjointed and with absolutely no cohesiveness. There was never a since of downtown at all until the last 5 mins. During the entire other 43:00 I kept thinking is he just driving on the side streets or maybe he is still on the out skirts of the downtown.
It's huge with lots of tall buildings, but it will never be on the same level as Chicago.

It's hot and humid in Houston, sometimes really cold too, so people just don't walk outside. Besides, people not walking around us a good thing for getting where you need to go in a vehicle.
