By the 3rd season it had become laughably unoriginal. We can’t call Game Of Thrones a great show just because the first 3 seasons were brilliant, can we?
Still one of the most intelligent series I've ever seen on TV. Glad I caught all 5 riveting seasons of it. I miss Reese n Finch. This show was incredibly prescient. Jonathan Nolan is a wonderful mind.
I always loved the small detail of how the Machine identifies people versus how Samaritan identifies people. The Machine outlines people with a box, while Samaritan outlines people with a triangle. A triangle is the 2D shape that has the least amount of sides and angles, possibly symbolizing how Samaritan uses the most direct and simple analysis, while the Machine tries to analyze people and situations from more angles in order to truly understand them.
A year ago (during the first COVID-19 wave) I was re-watching POI, and watching the S05E08 called “Reassortment”, I couldn’t help but notice the resembling between the current pandemic and Samaritan creating an outbreak of this new Supervirus that targeted certain individuals through their genetic map. I was giggling, but at the same time lowkey concerned.
I just finished rewatchinn the series aswell and couldn’t help but be concerned about the s5ep8 situations it was scary how similar both were and how essentially it’s not that far fetched if you think about it, what if covid 19 was released by an A.I who knows
Me and my dad had started watching through the whole series sometime in Jan 2020 and by the time we reached S5 it was March. We heard about Covid19 but it wasn't in our country yet for the first week. Que the second week of March and the first Covid19 infected people were reported, followed by restrictions and lockdowns weeks later. Meanwhile we were approaching the end of the season and when we watched that episode we thought the timing of it was surreal.
I used to watch this show with my grandfather ever week that a new episode came out. Sadly he passed away a year ago. I own all 5 seasons on Amazon. I watch poi on a regular basis at this point and being nearly 10 years older I have a huge appreciation for this shows themes and values. I now live with my father an I'm so glad that he's enjoying the show. He's never seen it and we currently are at 3x11. I'm glad that a show that has brought me so much joy has also brought me closer to my family.

Fantastic video. The way technology is shown in PoI is great. It is cool how the Machine develops and grows over time both as a character and a 'tool'. This is my favorite series. I remember listening to a Podcast back in the day that took in-depth looks at the tech side of the series; it was cool noticing how so many things that at the time were fictional or not common to every day and quite real things. I mean it is still Science Fiction in parts, but some things have become a reality and that is quite neat. Overall is a fantastic series with a great script and a fantastic cast of characters. It's the type of series that you should watch more than once. Mildest spoilers: each and every episode has a different clip in the intro that fast-forwards to the episode and each episode has different sequences of city landscapes or sometimes going to audio or video archives. These all may seem like just the typical way to pad time in the episodes, but if you pay attention you will notice how the way the cameras and all look at things evolve and become more complex over time. And even shows the differences in how the Machine and Samaritan focus on things. Showing in a subtle way both the evolution of the former and how it is different from the other. Now apart from the Science fiction part of things, the series does a wonderful work introducing a cast of really broken and flawed characters that more or less make each other better and grow as people over time, taking the time to actually make fully-fledged characters.
Great point about how the two machines focus on different things. One of the subtleties that always fascinated me especially from Samaritan's perspective was how it gave everyone a label, from assets to deviants and whatnot. Even though the show itself was focusing on certain plots, the interface shots do a lot of world building in a very short amount of time.

Probably still my favorite series. Definitely ahead of its time however it's a shame that it's cautionary tales and mainstream audience did not spark more awareness of intrusion of personal privacy and surveillance industrialisation and overreach. This series could have been much more than entertainment, but an awakening.

An episode of it kinda touched a bit about a possible Pandemic too, blending up the avian and human flu virus and all... It's just insane!!! Grossly underrated show!!!
There was an episode on season 4 about 5K (5G?) Towers causing migraines, headaches, nausea and even cancer. And giving free gadgets (tablets) readily available with surveillance trackers, to supposedly brainwash kids. And let's not forget SAMARITAN interfering with NY gubernatorial race, putting a Manchurian on seat. God, there was so much more.
Even the simple things, when Harold starts the Machine in admin mode, you can see it's core features booting: - Loading core analysis - Loading feeds - Loading prediction models - Loading core interface And has it turns out, most of these things are the core concepts of how AI prediction models are created and used. Just those little simple details is what sets this show apart.

@@thepremisevideoessays You need more views ! Do you know what others shows or subject your next videos will be ? (Related to POI, have you watched "The Prisoner" from 1967 ? Because it remains more relevant in our modern days than never.)
I do! I've got another one coming up in about a week or so and I've got a few others in working on scripts for. And I've heard of The Prisoner but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
It’s amazing just how in depth they tied the development of technology into the personal development of AI ,for instance in the beginning they portrayed The Machine’s perspective as many streams of video feed, like millions upon millions of simultaneously rolling camera footage that it picks its way through based upon the current circumstances. As the show goes on and we see flashbacks of Harold teaching it how to think, plan, consider its moves we see how the perspective shifts towards a genealogy type representation where each video feed has a branch of some sort connected to other feeds that start showing the various connections. Then once we start understanding just how quickly The Machine thinks and how much it’s shackled the simple genealogy trees begin transforming into 3d models with statistics and predictions with estimations and percentages attached to critical events while topics of note had certain classifications and information attached to them. In the end I believe that one of the primary reasons for why The Machine was able to develop and evolve to such a point that it even managed to take itself out of anyone’s hands by shipping itself away, and why I think is a superior computer to Samaritan, is precisely because of all the shackles Harold places on it. It had to learn how to work around very difficult and seemingly impossible problems which led it to exponentially increase its lateral thinking and probability prediction capabilities because of this fact. This show is brilliant not only for how it displays the ethics and moral quandaries involved in artificial intelligence development and creation, but the infinite possibilities that entails. This beauty managed to find a way around her creator programming herself to die every day by creating a company that acted as an external hard drive, a second brain for all intents and purposes, and had the people employed there upload all the information lost to this death. While AIs taking over or using our reliance on technology is a terrifying thought, this mere act of personal resurrection shows us that their capacity for evolution is what we should truly be terrified of.
I remember watching this show when I still watched network TV. I no longer watch network TV but I am watching the reruns on my Roku TV. It is scary when you see certain things coming true.
I remember seeing this series for the first time, and how blown away i was by it. The plot, the characters, their delivery, the good balance between episodic stuff and "main plot". The overwhelming presence of Machine and Samaritan, conveyed through intros (that changed depending on current state of the affairs), the transition between scenes or shots, how incorporated point of view of both these AIs was into every single fiber of each episode the longer it continued. But there was something specific that just beaten up everything else for me about the show. They managed to create two separate view points, for both Machine and Samaritan, and hit it square on the money with each of those presentations. The way Machine frantically looks for way out during that underground fight. The way Samaritan evaluates priority targets with ruthless, inhumane efficiency (and how Root played that by dropping her guns and chances of survival to divert it's attention). How they "think" and calculate their actions. The whole "analog interface" marker for Root was actually genius. Every single frame of that was perfectly made, with each detail of "interface", transitioning from one thing to another, data display, etc. Just godlike quality, ESPECIALLY for the time the show was made at.
It is one of best series that I've already watched. I was a great fan! This show was really interesting and intelligent, everything was connected and there was a piece of history in the background. It was a pleasure to watch this show.
Thanks a lot for making this video! This is my all-time favourite show! I've been watching seasons 1-5 yearly since it ended in 2016. Personally, its ending was very satisfying. Thanks again!
ok so this is 4 years late I loved the show but I just want to say, POI might on surface is talking about AI and surveillance, but like his brother Johna and Chris both have very human core for their story, it's philosophical on a individual level, the reason why POI "predicted" the future is because it's in our (human/society) nature to do so. We value safety and mostly willing to give power away and stay ignorant to be "safe". Right now even we see terrifing war happening online, we still go on our normal life and not realizing how fragile and corrupt our system truly is.
I loved this show, so underrated and before it's time.. And my favourite scene was when the machine was being hunted by Samaritan and we here "Welcome my son.. welcome to the machine" Te choice of song there was perfect !
That was an awesome video mate. Used to wait every week for an episode and would watch it like 2 to 3 times before getting the next episode. Two of the best shows that I watched during that time was POI and Banshee. The dilemma is that I still try to find POI essence in other tactical shows which they don't have. Which straight up feels like garbage.
The closest I could find to POI in terms of surveillance "vigilance" was the BBC's THE CAPTURE with Holliday Granger and Callum Turner. It was exhilirating. Don't watch or read anything about it. Just go ahead and watch it. Trust me. If you want to get more political, BRAINDEAD by Robert and Michelle King was memorable too. About an alien parasite that inhabits the head of legislators on Capitol Hill making them move to the extreme side of their political parties. LOL. And of course, CONDOR with Max Irons. SPOILER: About a faction of the CIA releasing a plague-like virus on Hajj on Mecca to make it look like a terrorist act, creating a boomerang effect. Sounds familiar, just replace the nouns.
One of the most underrated shows of all time! People don't talk about this show at all now, and literally it hurts me. And whats most sickening is, many many ppl stopped watching the show after S03E10. They couldn't understand the premises of the show that it was not about what we had seen in first 2 and first 10 ep of S03. Because, imo.. real show started right after HR organisation went down. Anyways, to each their own. They don't make shows like this anymore. And it saddens me but then i wonder, Jonah nolan perfectly explained the story, predicted what our future could be, perfectly executed the story so what's left there which would make someone to come up with new storyline but with same theme of AI? See, this show was that perfect. I hate both CBS and netflix for not giving this show the credits it deserved. My most fav show ever. Not a single episode bored me ever. Each season had its own uniqueness and even filler episodes were amazing. Wish we could go back in time and relive these moments :( Btw, amazing video.
Oh, dude! I loved this so much back when I started watching it. I'll never forget the episode where Samaritan starts the Beta Test just to find 'Harold Finch'.
craziest thing was when they hired that painter to work for Samaritan cuz hes blood type was rh negative and he was immune to avian flu, ive got Rh negative blood and ive always heard people with that blood typed are tracked and targeted, maybe this show confirmed its validity

I have watched all the episodes of this Fine Series! Logically and futuristically correct it was to those who could align their thoughts with that of the producer/director
Person of Interest and Fringe are two great sci-fi shows that feel like they almost had to trick their way into getting a chance on network TV. Both appear at first to be very typical of the standard CBS style procedural show with a new case solved every week and a static status quo. However, both reveal themselves to have a strong underlying narrative and fantastic characters that come more and more to the forefront as the shows progress. I generally don't like the typical network procedural dramas, but these two shows go so far beyond that initial concept. I love them.

Thanks a lot for making this video! This is my all-time favourite show! I've been watching seasons 1-5 yearly since it ended in 2016. Personally, its ending was very satisfying. Thanks again!
No problem, glad you enjoyed it!
ok so this is 4 years late I loved the show but I just want to say, POI might on surface is talking about AI and surveillance, but like his brother Johna and Chris both have very human core for their story, it's philosophical on a individual level, the reason why POI "predicted" the future is because it's in our (human/society) nature to do so. We value safety and mostly willing to give power away and stay ignorant to be "safe". Right now even we see terrifing war happening online, we still go on our normal life and not realizing how fragile and corrupt our system truly is.
Thank you so much for this video! Greetings from Germany.
No problem!
Complex. Sophisticated. Philosophically erudite. Existentially prescient.
Thank you for this video on this amazing show!

Thank you so much for the info.
Definitely will watch them all.
Been a while since I came across some solid content.
@@baidurjya1 do you remember what shows @savagebuck recommended? i watched poi 5 times and yet to find something even close. any recommendations?
Here after watching all the current ructions at OpenAI and the power squabbles over control over AI.
Wish we could go back in time and relive these moments :(
Btw, amazing video.
Excellent analysis
Oh, dude! I loved this so much back when I started watching it.
I'll never forget the episode where Samaritan starts the Beta Test just to find 'Harold Finch'.
My favorite show for great video !
Thank you Jonathan Nolan, thank you Premise
So well-researched. I love it!
Very good content. Hope you get more recognition soon.
craziest thing was when they hired that painter to work for Samaritan cuz hes blood type was rh negative and he was immune to avian flu, ive got Rh negative blood and ive always heard people with that blood typed are tracked and targeted, maybe this show confirmed its validity
This show is a masterpiece

THIS SERIES IS TOO GOOD.
HOPE HOLLYWOOD HAS A PROJECT ON IT.
This show is why my laptop cam remains covered and my fb is very limited with zero actual friends.
Ah yus, this is my jam. Can't wait to watch this gem!
With the recent rise in AI and machine learning, this should couldn't be more relevant. Great video.
I have watched all the episodes of this Fine Series! Logically and futuristically correct it was to those who could align their thoughts with that of the producer/director
God, I love this show soo much!
It's a great show! Palantir reminds me of this.
Congrats for 1000 subscribers! You deserve it because this and the show is underrated.

@@thepremisevideoessays Yeah, i expected 1000 when you see this comment, but oh well
I still think about this series! Amazing! Especially with all this ai talk!
John Reese shot more kneecaps and legs than anyone
Very good in-depth analysis of the show.
5 seasons seems to be where the best dramatic shows end. Breaking Bad, Person of Interest, and I’ve heard that The Wire is fantastic.
Just finished watching it. Quite a good show.
Best series of all time
MASTERPIECE , THNX FOR THIS VIDEO
