I’m surprised more trainers don’t talk about the necessity for crate training in this scenario… EVEN with ADULT DOGS. I’ve been fostering dogs for two decades. Here’s an email I sent to a new Adopter who’s dog had an accident first few days:
Yes… He needs more boundaries. Bring the crate into kitchen and he should be crate trained all over again.
It’s not a bad thing, he just needs to learn where it’s acceptable there to go to the bathroom.
I’m assuming he gets kenneled at night. When let out of the crate in the morning he should be lead immediately outside in the yard… bring treats and go out with him. When he goes potty, immediately tell him “Good Boy” and give him the treat.
When back inside, since he’s gone potty, give him 30 - 45 minutes maximum free-time. Bribe him back in the crate with a treat (so he knows it’s not punishment) and let him hang out in there.
Anytime he’s let out of the crate he needs to go straight outside. Then again, Potty, Good Boy, Treat, Free-Time, Crate.
For most dogs I’ve had to house break, I’ve bought cheap hot dogs or some chicken, cut them up in small pieces, keep them in a zip lock bag and when they potty, they get that special “high-value” treat.
They very quickly learn that they ONLY get that yummy high-value treat if they potty outside… and they learn quick. Pavlov’s dog lol.
As far as where he’s had an accident inside, start placing his water dish there. And/or you feed him in that spot… I’ve even kept the dish he’s eaten at, in that spot. Because they won’t go theoretically where they eat. I’ve never had a dog lift their leg again where I’ve placed that food dish.
Don’t feel it’s unusual that a new dog, even if an Adult or older dog, is having accidents at first… the change can sometimes have this effect. It’s kind of like having new company.. you have to show them where the bathroom is. This is why I always insist on crate training even if they’re older dogs. Because I see this more often than not.
Don’t feel bad about crating and limiting his freedom for a bit. Dogs are like children and need boundaries. You just need to reset his boundaries while he’s still decompressing in a new environment.
This is so helpful for my puppy to.. Thank you so much for the information.. 💞 💞
Very informative! Keep up the good work
Thanks!
It hard to find videos about this issue with DOGS!!! Most videos harp on puppies. I have a rescue almost 3. Got here last May 2021, a busy schedule, and still find time to walk her twice a day. Definitely one hour, then 30 minutes later. I'be been VERY patient, reward her when she does her routines, and keep her on a regular routine. Wee pads work for when I'm not home, but the poop in house is making me loose it, and we have established a regular poop area outside. I play with her outside, and inside. but because she is prone to pooping in the house, when I'm gone, I keep her in a confined area, with a selection of toys, small treats and light music voices to keep her some type of company. I'm losing my sanity, and it's 4 months shy of a year that I've had her. Wish the focus wasn't always about puppies.
Our canine Angels in fur are our children 😁Thank you Animal Wised Brilliant video 🐶
Children are children, not animals weirdo

This Is A Nice Place To Poop On💩
When you work a 9-5, the kennel plus positive reinforcement when you are home and they go outside will potty train with out you even really trying.

I'm so tired of the chihuahua I'm watching. His hobby is pooping and he does it all over the house. Doesn't matter if he's been outside all day. He also sneaks out of his room at night to go shit somewhere, even if he was taken out at 12 am. Advice???? I'm fucking tired!
