Here we go with the folks who think legendary drummer implies a chop fest. He comes from a totally different place than most drummers. It's tribal, it's esoteric, it comes from the heart. It's bigger than all the chops and technique. Baker forever.
He's clearly burnt here. Starts freezing cold and warms up, but he's not got 'it'. That said, he's so talented, he pulls it off. Nothing special. This, from a Ginger Baker loving drummer.

I have heard many drum solos from him, and they are absolutely fantastic. And Bonham could never have played fast jazz music like Ginger. They are completely different drummers too. Give the guy a break!
Maybe, ...a bit overrated. He was nevertheless a jazz drummer into rock field. Few others. It s true However he left no patterns to take from, on his way.

Can you play a game with one of the greatest drummers of all time and he won't be forgotten never has been in me since he was with cream and I'm 63 years old
I am a Blues Guy who finds this a little hard to relate to. It's all about timing, and the timing is impeccable. After all Ginger has done more than anyone who comments on this...he's sold/ played on more albums than you or me. So you have to respect him for that. Ginger's heart is in Jazz and he's got quite a resume, like him or not. Also he's studied with dangerous natives in Africa putting his own life on the line to learn drumming from tribes. Can you imagine how he'd stick out in that crowd? He did this many times not just once. Ginger does play the right stuff at the right time- it's probably why Clapton and Jack Bruce found him easy to play with on stage. Ginger is old now, and he's not about playing fast and spitting out notes in machine gun like succession, that's kind of cliche. Ginger's rhythm is very much right on. Although it's difficult for me to relate to because I lack Jazz-sensitivity, I like what Ginger does and I wouldn't change a note. I wouldn't change one note, and I think all in all it's a very cool rendition. It's a good example of "Less is more." Would Neal Peart add anything to this rendition???? No, if he was to let loose it would be a whole different tune. You wouldn't recognize what the drums are saying. So let's not be negative and listen to what Ginger and company are doing. Listen to what the drums are saying, don't lump on Ginger, he's still relevant.

twice in Philadelphia during Jack's A Question Of Time album tour late 89/early 90. Also saw him in Philly again a few weeks later with his own band featuring Jonas Hellbourge. There was no guitarist. Saw him a few years later at a Sea Girt, NJ drum shop holding a clinic for Ludwig. It was a Monday night and was storming like hell. I drove almost three hours to get there for the 7 pm show. His wife Karen was there with him. I brought a stack of albums for him to sign and he graciously autographed every one (the Ludwig rep got pissed at me for taking so much time. There were about 25 fans there). I was fortunate enough to see Ginger Baker's Jazz Confusion three years in a row in New Hope, PA. He played the exact same show from his last album Why during those final three tours, but it was incredible to be able to hear him play jazz up close. He was truly happy and taught everybody where he really came from. Thanks Ginger. You're forever in my heart.

Camels & Elephants was the drum solo spot with Graham Bond, right? Do you remember them doing that one live?? The recording of that song is incredible. I don't think many Americans were ever fortunate enough to hear it over here. For drummers, this showcase is the setup for Toad a few years later.

I saw him at the New Morning. It is in Paris in the African section. Resturants are open very late if you are willing to wait for your food it is worth it. Ginger spent alot of time bitching in between songs, or played songs about bitching. I think he was wearing the same shirt.
Ginger's roots are in African poly rhythmic music, and he brought it back to the rest of the world to enjoy and the rest is jazz and rock and blues history!

I heard him say that happened when he had a gig at the Iridium in NYC. His drums (Ludwig) didn't arrive and he was in a pinch. He said Ludwig were no help in getting him a kit quickly, but DW did and came to the rescue. That's when/why the change from Ludwig to DW happened.

You mad? Pee Wee was one of James Brown's best and Alec Dankworth is an awesome bass player, Ginger describes him as the best bass player he's ever played with. Having played with Bill Frisell and Jack Bruce as well as about 100 others, that is some praise.

Saw Ginger with The Graham Bond Organisation many times in the 1960s and Wade in the Water was a standard most nights. Check out "Sounds of 65"

Dig out some of his very early recordings from the late 50s and early 60s. He could play jazz...

The context of the song is ridiculous. He lived to be 80 years old and never figured it out. A non-believer. His dad going off to World War II on the train, with Peter running after the train messed him up badly. His dad died in the war, for nothing, to make Zionist supported Churchill and his buddies rich. Peter had a mom. What happened to her? Another non-believer who did not properly nuture him? As an adult, he should have figured things out. But, smoking cigarettes, marijuana, and alcohol has detrimental affects on the brain. Our Lord tests us to see if we are true. He does not want weaklings in heaven. Unlike other drummers who EVOLVE over time, Ginger NEVER evolved. He plays the same weird beatnik British bebop anything-goes-screw-timing-and-tempo way he always did. Just slow as snails.

You mad? Pee Wee was one of James Brown's best and Alec Dankworth is an awesome bass player, Ginger describes him as the best bass player he's ever played with. Having played with Bill Frisell and Jack Bruce as well as about 100 others, that is some praise.
