I love this fellowship between Protestant and Catholic brothers in Christ. When I was deployed as a Marine our Catholic Chaplain, Father Kelly, was popular with all Christians. I remember having a combined Catholic and Protestant Bible Study while deployed. It was such a blessing when brothers live together in unity. Psalm 133:1
The Our Father (Lord's Prayer) is more than simply a prayer- it's a formula for proper prayer. The formula: praise, thanksgiving, surrender, petition, forgiveness and guidance. God Bless

The gap between the two things seems insurmountable BUT what bridges that gap is the cross (Jesus's sacrifice on the cross for us) and the bigger that gap gets, the more of impactful and meaningful, the more of a necessity the cross becomes for us in our lives! Parable of the sewer: As a teen, a bad Catholic at that, I started to read the Bible, and when I hit this... I was utterly confused, and lost heart. I felt I did not understand what was being said, and felt that it must have meant that I was a lost cause like many of these seeds. I still went to mass with me family, though we did so less and less over time. Fast forward 25 years, I returned to the Catholic Church this year, and I'm finally doing the right things with my life. We need people to support each other in their spiritual growth
I typically listen to these in the background while I work, but when Matt Fradd started reading out of John at 46:39 I had to click over to the video. The following interaction between both of them was a beautiful picture of our weakness as humans and the infinite glory of God. When I got back closer to the Lord, the one parable that impacted me the most while reading the Bible was the Parable of the Sower. I still hold it dear to me! 🙏🙏🙏

"Being wrong feels just like being right, doesn't it?" Sounds like someone else has seen my favorite Ted talk. About the parable of the sower, when Jesus is arrested it's interesting all the disciples crumble and flee under the persecution. Peter takes that even further. Face value, it sure looks like the disciples are the rocky soil. Yet, Jesus doesn't treat Peter's outward moral crumbling as being synonymous with the failure of his faith. He prays for Peter that his faith would not fail even though he is going to turn away under persecution. In the parable of the sower I naturally would think that to crumble under persecution *is* to have your faith fail, but the rest of the gospel brings in a lot of nuance.
I’m curious. Since Protestants believe prayer can only be defined as an act of worship, how do they reconcile Jesus’s prayers to the father? Does God the son worship God the father?
This was incredibly inspirational. Catholics and Protestants should do this more often--just explain what texts/parables mean to each other. Thank you!
Matt, not as if I am any good as an ultimate judge of these things... but I have listened to thousands of hours of teachings and commentaries and sermons from some great thinkers of the faith and this was BY FAR one of the most moving, Spirit Filled conversations I've ever witnessed! I only share this to be an encouragement to you both to keep being faithful men and allowing God to use you for the edification of the Church! Because Praise be to God ... I am very late with my reply, but as a new dad. When they started going back and forth about good things on earth not ultimately satisfying their desire for happiness. That hit home hard and then they provided comfort as to why that is! Truly a beautiful exchange
Two podcasters I have enjoyed and learned from...Together in one place! I am so blessed right now. You two have given this Anabaptist a faint sense of a glory we may one day share, as our eyes fill with nothing but Jesus. Jesus, and tears of joy!
These talks are great. I also want to see priests and preachers of different faith traditions having these talks. That will build mutual understanding and bring us closer together at the middle/top levels.
The thing that has me laughing is the fact Matt Fradd is An intelligent Catholic but forgot “my peace I leave you my peace I give you” because we hear it every week at Mass. and I think it’s said in the Byzantine Tradition as well
What you say at 47:45 brought tears to my eyes. As a father of young children I know the feeling well, and the discussion you two engage in around this was awesome. It reminded me of the famous St. Augustine quote: "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you." Also...Ecclesiastes...
I appreciated Matt from Ten Minute Bible Hour speaking about his easy, early life, good behavior and virtue because of the strict “bumpers” he’d been raised with. I was raised in an extremely devout, prayerful Catholic home. I have 10 older siblings, mostly brothers, who monitored and checked my behavior constantly. I was raised in a very close environment, I was in Catholic school. Apart from the mortal sin of rage that I was forced to recognize and confess when I was 7, I really didn’t do anything notably bad. I behaved well. I tried to be obedient, responsible, kind, etc. I was never going to be a popular kid because I was too nerdy and awkward. I didn’t have to worry about managing my virtue or my vanity, or any other major issues. But then I grew up. I grew in attractiveness, in outgoing personality, in social acceptance. All of a sudden, I was confronted with weaknesses and venality that I was completely unaware. It was amazing to be found attractive. It was seductive and enthralling. And I found that I could be easily flattered, that I could develop this terrible ego. As I grew in the things that this world values, I realized how extremely weak and broken and sinful I truly was, and it was so humbling. And that horrible, terrible revelation, that thing that broke me and keeps breaking me, keeps me running to Christ for rootedness, for salvation, for humility and for the ability to love and forgive, for me to recommit my life and my heart to God. It’s easy to be “good” when you have no opportunity to be “bad”.
Can I put a vote in for the two of you doing a bible study? The openness in conversation between you is truly beautiful to witness. Both faiths love the Word of God, let that bind us and bring us together! Thy will be done. Keep up the good work Matt's.
You guys are great. You exemplify the type of discussion that needs to be happening without emotions. So often I go on to UA-cam just to Proclaim what the church teaches and I'm completely attacked, admonished, put down etc. This is just a conversation, there's nothing wrong with finding common ground. My job is not to change someone's opinion but to put the information in front and you do what you want with it.
I love your two conversations with Matt Fradd. I am a protestant convert to Catholicism, the only one in my family, and I really appreciate your knowledge and your willingness to share it with everyone. After I read some of the comments under your Pints with Aquinas video that nit picked little bits of Catholic dogma, I appreciate better your well thought through detailed theological points expressed in many videos. Unlike Scott Hahn, I don’t know enough to agree or disagree with anything. All I know is I like conversation, I like learning new things, and I don’t like conflict and arguments. Keep it up and I’ll keep watching.

The section on Farmer Maggot goes deeper: if I remember correctly, he stands up directly to the Ringwraiths. Imagine this little hobbit being brave enough to tell the agents of Sauron himself to bugger off and leave his farm alone. In many ways, this is also what we need to do daily if in smaller ways.
I am late to the game on this conversation but as a Catholic my feeling is Grace as given through the Holy Spirit, I gain a richer understanding and am always searching for the Grace to deepen my relationship with the Lord. If that makes sense.
This was a beautiful authentic conversation. That authenticity opens the possibility for connection… which we all observed. As this fed your souls as you contemplated these verses in the bible and how these words have deep meaning in your own daily experiences as you seek greater connection to The Seeker… so too was I fed, and in a way that I’m not sure I’ve quite experienced in a UA-cam video before. I believe Christ yearns for us ALL to have an eternally intimate relationship with Him that we can barely even begin to imagine the magnificence of. Our other relationships are echos of that relationship, and of those between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as He tells us that we are indeed created in His Image. When we start to believe this more deeply, I think we can experience His Kingdom here on earth IN COMMUNITY with others in a profound way that we didn’t even realize was possible.
A beautiful discussion between two beautiful minds, in such a beautiful redemptive way. Thank you both for making the internet and the Christian family a better place.
Matt and Matt, this video was such a blessing. The portion on searching for happiness and Christ being the only true fulfillment to our longing brought me so much joy! I know you've had discouragements about how UA-cam handles meaningful content like this. I just want to encourage you that conversations like this make a big difference. This is the first time I've heard the parable of the Sower taught/talked about without asking "Which ground are you?" with the heavy emphasis put on how you need to be more serious to make sure that you're the "Good ground." I liked how the emphasis was on the Sower knowing what He's doing even though from our perspective things look chaotic and unmanaged. This was a pleasant insight about the character of the Sower and our place, no matter how insignificant it seems, in His field, so to speak. Which perhaps gives a depth of insight, even though it was not fully parsed out, that God isn't just the Sower; and isn't just the Seed, but He "Who alone is Good" is also the "Good soil" in whom we are planted according to His purpose and plan. This being done in His death, we too are buried with and in Him, through baptism, as into good rich soil; and in Him are given the fruits of the Spirit, us being clothed with Christ. The harvest of which will last forever. So God in Jesus, who alone is good, is the good ground in which we are planted; and we are made good ground in Him alone, in which He is planted in us.
Well Matts, this conversation deeply resonated with me. I appreciated the vulnerability of both of you and deeply wished that I had friends such as yourselves. Alas, I am here in Canada and far away. I think that part of the struggle each of you discusses when you touch beauty and experience the joy of love is the fact that we were made for the eternal and this world only provides us with glimpses of it. Indeed, we see as through a mirror darkly but then we shall see face to face. 1Cor. 13:13. The great mystics in Catholic and Protestant traditions all mention how fleeting the world is and only God provides us with that which remains. It also points to where we need to let go and allow the Lord to fill in the empty space.... Blessings brothers in Christ. Dan

As I’m watching this i keep thinking about what Jesus said about us being one. Maybe not being under one roof or one thought but in one spirit, where we can come together with our brothers and sisters in Christ despite their denomination and read the word and share our experiences and ultimately Glorifing Our Lord. I like your statements around 32 minutes in. Had the same thing, I was looking at some people going crazy and was thinking “they need Jesus”. I have a great life, thanks be to God but I would give it all up in a heartbeat to be with my Lord. As a devout Catholic I cherish life, from the womb to the tomb but nothing comes close to happiness compared to the yearning to see my Saviour's Beautiful Face.

What a wonderful way to wake up and get ready for church. One day I’d love to hear you discuss Jesus first miracle, making the wine at the wedding, and the seeming aversion that so many Protestant denominations have to wine vs. grape juice at communion while claiming to rely on the Bible as the inerrant word of God. That sounded judgmental. I don’t mean it that way, but I don’t know how else to ask.

As a born and raised Baptist who doesn't drink for personal reasons, I think it comes a lot from the US temperance movement that once led to Prohibition. There was a lot of alcohol abuse that was worth fighting back against but it led to a complete anti-alcohol stance that just sort of stayed long after the movement died down.

8:38 I’m not that far in time from the first time I read that parable. I prayed and I prayed hard to place me in the good soil. Please don’t let me be on the rock, keep me from the thorns and crows. I begged and pleaded to be planted in the good soil. So yeah I took it as a warning and continued to pray that I could at the very least return thirty fold.

Yeah, he's from Adelaide, Australia. We don't use the word "y'all" here. (Instead, we typically use "youse"). But he started saying y'all a few years ago due to living in the USA.

This was so insightful! From the discussion on how the closer we get to God the more we become aware of our flaws and how we must depend on Him, to the discussion on how many of us (including Christians) fail to recognize the reality of the devil and demons, to the points on how the good soil is good soil even if it "only" produces 30-fold, this has been a wonderful video!

I think the conversation about how we should be honored even playing a small part, like the farmer in LOTR, is a good way of seeing Mary's role. She was given a MASSIVE role. It doesn't mean she's a goddess, of course, but it shows God likes using people to achieve His plans. As a former Protestant, understanding Mary's role in salvation history was hard for me at times when I became Catholic a decade ago. But maybe we celebrate her for the huge, glorious work He chose to do in her like we celebrate Frodo for being chosen as the one who threw the ring in the fire.

These talks are great. I also want to see priests and preachers of different faith traditions having these talks. That will build mutual understanding and bring us closer together at the middle/top levels.
The thing that has me laughing is the fact Matt Fradd is An intelligent Catholic but forgot “my peace I leave you my peace I give you” because we hear it every week at Mass. and I think it’s said in the Byzantine Tradition as well
It's not in the Byzantine tradition - or if it is it isn't heard bc the priest about never wears a lavalier mic during the consecration.
What you say at 47:45 brought tears to my eyes. As a father of young children I know the feeling well, and the discussion you two engage in around this was awesome. It reminded me of the famous St. Augustine quote:
"You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you."

I appreciated Matt from Ten Minute Bible Hour speaking about his easy, early life, good behavior and virtue because of the strict “bumpers” he’d been raised with.
I was raised in an extremely devout, prayerful Catholic home. I have 10 older siblings, mostly brothers, who monitored and checked my behavior constantly. I was raised in a very close environment, I was in Catholic school. Apart from the mortal sin of rage that I was forced to recognize and confess when I was 7, I really didn’t do anything notably bad. I behaved well. I tried to be obedient, responsible, kind, etc. I was never going to be a popular kid because I was too nerdy and awkward. I didn’t have to worry about managing my virtue or my vanity, or any other major issues.
But then I grew up. I grew in attractiveness, in outgoing personality, in social acceptance. All of a sudden, I was confronted with weaknesses and venality that I was completely unaware. It was amazing to be found attractive. It was seductive and enthralling. And I found that I could be easily flattered, that I could develop this terrible ego. As I grew in the things that this world values, I realized how extremely weak and broken and sinful I truly was, and it was so humbling. And that horrible, terrible revelation, that thing that broke me and keeps breaking me, keeps me running to Christ for rootedness, for salvation, for humility and for the ability to love and forgive, for me to recommit my life and my heart to God. It’s easy to be “good” when you have no opportunity to be “bad”.
Can I put a vote in for the two of you doing a bible study? The openness in conversation between you is truly beautiful to witness. Both faiths love the Word of God, let that bind us and bring us together! Thy will be done. Keep up the good work Matt's.
The Lord's prayer is a singular teaching. So simplest yet so powerful. We can always fall back on it.

You guys are great. You exemplify the type of discussion that needs to be happening without emotions. So often I go on to UA-cam just to Proclaim what the church teaches and I'm completely attacked, admonished, put down etc. This is just a conversation, there's nothing wrong with finding common ground. My job is not to change someone's opinion but to put the information in front and you do what you want with it.

I am a protestant convert to Catholicism, the only one in my family, and I really appreciate your knowledge and your willingness to share it with everyone. After I read some of the comments under your Pints with Aquinas video that nit picked little bits of Catholic dogma, I appreciate better your well thought through detailed theological points expressed in many videos. Unlike Scott Hahn, I don’t know enough to agree or disagree with anything. All I know is I like conversation, I like learning new things, and I don’t like conflict and arguments. Keep it up and I’ll keep watching.

The section on Farmer Maggot goes deeper: if I remember correctly, he stands up directly to the Ringwraiths. Imagine this little hobbit being brave enough to tell the agents of Sauron himself to bugger off and leave his farm alone. In many ways, this is also what we need to do daily if in smaller ways.

I am late to the game on this conversation but as a Catholic my feeling is Grace as given through the Holy Spirit, I gain a richer understanding and am always searching for the Grace to deepen my relationship with the Lord. If that makes sense.
This was a beautiful authentic conversation. That authenticity opens the possibility for connection… which we all observed. As this fed your souls as you contemplated these verses in the bible and how these words have deep meaning in your own daily experiences as you seek greater connection to The Seeker… so too was I fed, and in a way that I’m not sure I’ve quite experienced in a UA-cam video before. I believe Christ yearns for us ALL to have an eternally intimate relationship with Him that we can barely even begin to imagine the magnificence of. Our other relationships are echos of that relationship, and of those between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as He tells us that we are indeed created in His Image. When we start to believe this more deeply, I think we can experience His Kingdom here on earth IN COMMUNITY with others in a profound way that we didn’t even realize was possible.

Matt and Matt, this video was such a blessing. The portion on searching for happiness and Christ being the only true fulfillment to our longing brought me so much joy! I know you've had discouragements about how UA-cam handles meaningful content like this. I just want to encourage you that conversations like this make a big difference. I'm excited to hear you speak at FLBC in in October.
This is the first time I've heard the parable of the Sower taught/talked about without asking "Which ground are you?" with the heavy emphasis put on how you need to be more serious to make sure that you're the "Good ground."
I liked how the emphasis was on the Sower knowing what He's doing even though from our perspective things look chaotic and unmanaged.
This was a pleasant insight about the character of the Sower and our place, no matter how insignificant it seems, in His field, so to speak.
Which perhaps gives a depth of insight, even though it was not fully parsed out, that God isn't just the Sower; and isn't just the Seed, but He "Who alone is Good" is also the "Good soil" in whom we are planted according to His purpose and plan. This being done in His death, we too are buried with and in Him, through baptism, as into good rich soil; and in Him are given the fruits of the Spirit, us being clothed with Christ. The harvest of which will last forever.
So God in Jesus, who alone is good, is the good ground in which we are planted; and we are made good ground in Him alone, in which He is planted in us.
Well Matts, this conversation deeply resonated with me. I appreciated the vulnerability of both of you and deeply wished that I had friends such as yourselves. Alas, I am here in Canada and far away. I think that part of the struggle each of you discusses when you touch beauty and experience the joy of love is the fact that we were made for the eternal and this world only provides us with glimpses of it. Indeed, we see as through a mirror darkly but then we shall see face to face. 1Cor. 13:13. The great mystics in Catholic and Protestant traditions all mention how fleeting the world is and only God provides us with that which remains. It also points to where we need to let go and allow the Lord to fill in the empty space....

Maybe not being under one roof or one thought but in one spirit, where we can come together with our brothers and sisters in Christ despite their denomination and read the word and share our experiences and ultimately Glorifing Our Lord. What a wonderful way to wake up and get ready for church. One day I’d love to hear you discuss Jesus first miracle, making the wine at the wedding, and the seeming aversion that so many Protestant denominations have to wine vs. grape juice at communion while claiming to rely on the Bible as the inerrant word of God. That sounded judgmental. I don’t mean it that way, but I don’t know how else to ask.

As a born and raised Baptist who doesn't drink for personal reasons, I think it comes a lot from the US temperance movement that once led to Prohibition. There was a lot of alcohol abuse that was worth fighting back against but it led to a complete anti-alcohol stance that just sort of stayed long after the movement died down.

8:38 I’m not that far in time from the first time I read that parable. I prayed and I prayed hard to place me in the good soil. Please don’t let me be on the rock, keep me from the thorns and crows. I begged and pleaded to be planted in the good soil. So yeah I took it as a warning and continued to pray that I could at the very least return thirty fold.
If you see God in the things that are beautiful and are thankful you can be blessed with unearned grace.

From the discussion on how the closer we get to God the more we become aware of our flaws and how we must depend on Him, to the discussion on how many of us (including Christians) fail to recognize the reality of the devil and demons, to the points on how the good soil is good soil even if it "only" produces 30-fold, this has been a wonderful video!

I think the conversation about how we should be honored even playing a small part, like the farmer in LOTR, is a good way of seeing Mary's role. She was given a MASSIVE role. It doesn't mean she's a goddess, of course, but it shows God likes using people to achieve His plans. As a former Protestant, understanding Mary's role in salvation history was hard for me at times when I became Catholic a decade ago. But maybe we celebrate her for the huge, glorious work He chose to do in her like we celebrate Frodo for being chosen as the one who threw the ring in the fire.
