I was sad to hear that Reed Martin passed away on Sep 30th. I spent some time with him at Midwest Banjo Camp in 2008, and he was an inspiring teacher and wonderful storyteller.
Yes, please, PLEASE, post the 2nd video. I had the pleasure of sitting in on a house concert with Reed some years ago, and the CD is one of my favorites.
I met and knew Reed many years ago when he was still at the Smithsonian and we were both active in the AMCA. I read today that he may have developed alzheimer's. I lost his contact information but he was a heck of a guy. and had a lovely collection of antique motorcycles I believe the oldest was in 1898 DeDion Bouton...
Clawhammer is a unique sound with it's unique style. Mr. Martin had it down. Hobart Crabtree was famous in my area for the style. He was known also for his Santa Claus look.
Hey Russ, When you first started learning Banjo, did you learn Bluegrass picking and claw hammer together, or did you learn one first and the other further down the line? Which came first?
@@81crowe Thanks for the reply. I've watched your claw hammer vids Your clawhammer playing is as excellent as your bluegrass picking. I'm still struggling learning bluegrass picking, so I think trying to learn clawhammer at the same time might fry my brain.😂 but I love watching/listening to your clawhammer playing. I may dip my toe into it one day. 😉 Great vid BTW. 👍
@81crowe Mr. Russ! Could you put me in touch with Mr. Martin? I'm from near his hometown and i would love to pick his brain on banjo and growing up in this area. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Reed is playing without a capo on these tunes as it is just more fun as a banjo player. So, if he is playing in double C tuning, it is likely an D tune, and the same for his playing in open G for many A tunes.

Thanks for finally posting Russ! I can take out that horrible buzz in the audio track...shoot me an e-mail, I think your dad has my contact info!
Thanks for sharing this video of a great and woefully under recorded player. I think l lost his recording and hope I can obtain another.

Hey Russ, When you first started learning Banjo, did you learn Bluegrass picking and claw hammer together, or did you learn one first and the other further down the line? Which came first?
Hey Jon, I started playing bluegrass banjo about 22 years ago and clawhammer more recently around 14 years ago!

What’s the yellow square thing behind his right hand?
It’s a big piece of foam inside the banjo to help with overtones.
@@81crowe Oh I see. His playing is phenomenal! Can't wait for Vol. 2!
