I think your point about "we know what we're getting with Super7 but keep giving them money anyway" really resonated with me. I don't even have the energy to be let down anymore, but I keep giving this company interest-free loans.
Some other Super7 Ultimates lines (GI Joe and Thundercats) have tried to address the loose joints problem, but they're horrible. They are so tight with huge, crunchy ratchets that fight you all the way. The soft plastic feels like it would rather bend than get the joint moving. You kind of have to rock them back and forth to get them moving and then they seize up again the next time you mess with them. Honestly, I'll take the slightly wobbly joints over tight, scary, creaky, crackly joints 9 times out of 10. The only ones in the TMNT Ultimates line that have really bugged me were that Samurai Leo and Leatherhead. The rest can do the job fine. I was pissed when I found out that Robotic Bebop didn't have ankle rockers. The ONE THING we can count on Super7 for, and they blow it. Sometimes it just feels like nobody's home at Super7. It's probably not your thing, since they're stylized and minimally articulated like ReAction, but the Mondo vinyl line has my attention. You would have a field day going over those sculpts (Baxter and Ray Filet).
From what I recall, Gary (Raz) seemed to have the most trouble with the joints on Krang. Did you experience the same? I didn't buy Krang, partly because I saw Gary's review and thought, "oh boy, that looks like a floppy mess..."
@@michaeljfoley1 He's not great out of the box, but there are workarounds. Samurai Leo and Leatherhead need some kind of external support to stand indefinitely, whereas my Krang does not.
@@SmokeForPants Also, I agree with what you were saying before about overly stiff or ratcheted joints, I hate having to fight the joint just to move it, at that point it no longer feels like a toy, it's something else.
Yeah Krang for me is absolutely awful. I had trouble just trying to stand him for that shot of him next to the triceraton I made at the end of the action scene. I just wish Neca and Super7 could achieve the perfect balance. Not too stiff or not too loose. Super7 can appear to have decent resistance, but as soon as you start moving them around for a bit they’ll lose any friction they originally had. I was pretty upset when I pulled Muckman out for this review and his hips couldn’t support his weight anymore. He use to be good! No ankle rockers on Robotic Bebop is silly. You’d want any version of bebop and rocksteady to be able to run. I haven’t opened him or robotic rocksteady up yet. I’m going to try and make a double review for the two of them. I really like the Mondo style with their designs. They look kind of wacky and neat, but the only reason I’m not picking them up is the price. I’m just collecting too much stuff already. Like I said though I really like how they look. Classic but with a new twist. Eventually Mondo will get some of my money when they put out their real ghostbusters toys.
@@razrentals8897 Robotic Rocksteady is fantastic and Bebop would have been perfect if his ankles could stay flat to the ground on wide stances. He does have ankle articulation, but it's not the standard Super7 ankle scheme, which is disappointing. I think it was Baxter that also didn't have ankle rocking, so you have to get his feet dirrectly underneath him in a squat, which is what I had to do with Robo Bebop. By the way, I've never done this and you may feel like you shouldn't have to do this, but if you're in a dire situation with loose joints, you can stick some liquid acrylic into the joint to help firm it up. Kiki Fix Loose Joints is one product I've seen mentioned. I should probably do that with Samurai Leo, but I'm lazy. I just prop him up against something for stability. I'm just not as sensitive to the issue as it seems a lot of people are. I just wish people would talk about the overly tight joints, too. It seems like a little bit of wiggle gets a demerit, but being so tight that it is destined to break someday when the plastic loses its flexibility gets a pass. At least there's a fix for looseness. I'm hoping I won't feel it in my wallet, but I'm sure that's just delusional thinking.
Then we are two, Benjamin. These figures is all awesome even if there is a tiny flaws here and there. I really appreciate the work Raz put into these in depth reviews. I may do a few minor tweaks when I get mine, I want to add a weak line to seperate the teeth, and some mild wash over the scales on his face and body so they just stick out a little more.
Can we please recollect signatures for a shot asking Super 7 that they must make Pizza Face!!! C'mon Raz, you're our voice here! Even with all the flaws we know Super 7 make, I'm sure that Pizza Face would be an awesome figure in Ultimates version!
In terms of Fugitoid, I think S7 might have some wiggle room because very similar designs appeared in the games. (Tournament Fighters likewise used the toy Triceraton in different colors that would be perfect as a GITD figure.) Pizzaface has apparently had years of significant work done on him as Flynn personally wanted him around wave 5 (and the lead designer Kyle didn't so much). He might get a Rat King style tweak and release. I've often wondered if Panda Khan and Usagi could potentially get toy style releases completely outside of the TMNT line, sidestepping Nickelodeon entirely. I strongly suspect based on what I do know of Eastman and Laird's agreements with other creators that they got rights to their toy designs. Unfortunately, NECA got an exclusive with Sakai for now. I think their Samurai Usagi figure was colored and aimed at toy fans. I see Napoleon sadly as the difficult one. Although I'd love it if S7 did Rasputin and Attila as different from Genghis as Napoleon was as a toy. I've seen great fan art imagining all four frogs in 90s style as wildly different styles of frog. To me, particularly if they need to focus on original designs, the way S7 needs to stay relevant with its toy themed TMNT waves is to do stuff that credibly looks like "lost" 90s toys and Karai is the only one so far that scratches that itch for me. The Nomad Leo looks like a 2003 variant to me and it betrays Kyle's 2003 fandom. Vintage TMNT variants should look like cheap Halloween costumes and bachelorette party dancers. Likewise, I think Guerilla Gorilla, while COOL, is a deep cut for an unproduced character in vintage whereas there are a ton of logical shallow cuts for unreleased vintage toys: Jagwar and Dreadmon were designed as toys at the time, with differences from Archie. Ninjara was obviously meant to be, as was Armaggon. Tempestra and Dregg were clearly pitched at being toys. Tatsu was among several who appeared in console video games (distinct from the movie version) along with characters like Tora the Polar Bear who are clearly characters invented to work as toys. I could easily rattle off 12 high profile characters created before Next Mutation who would fit as "lost" toys. And as many ideas for Turtle variants. If S7 could do toy waves of 2 "lost" characters, 1 CREDIBLE screwball Turtle costume variant, and 1 vintage figure with design changes, I think they'd be on steady ENOUGH ground even WITH the fans that have walked away. They don't need THAT many fans to stay for it to be viable but they DO need to effectively court those fans.
Jagwar and Dreadmon were designed as toys back then? Are there pictures of their designs online? I’d love to see what they would have looked like. I agree, it’d be awesome to see different types of frogs made into Rasputin and Atilla. Was Pizzaface cut because of Playmates meddling or Kyle pulling the plug? I’d like to see what was done with him.
@ From what I understand, Flynn wanted Pizzaface in wave 5 and Kyle kept delaying revisions because he would get nauseous looking at it. I think it went through further revisions after the Playmates stuff but wound up with a dozen or so finished sculpts that Nick wasn't quite happy with as it became a back and forth when they decided it needed to be "more different". The design process started taking longer because Nick had more and more notes the more original a design was. I believe Nick actually suggested 2003 for alternating waves to give S7 more time to iterate on the new designs needed for retro toy waves. The more "new" something is, the more back and forth things get. I gather S7 has now settled for just doing 2003 waves because they weren't getting anywhere with retro toy designs aside from big stacks of rejected or not-quite-there designs and even sculpts. Whereas their 2003 designs both sailed through approval with Nick and sold better. I do think something might be up with Mondo. They hired a Super7 sculptor who worked with TMNT (Brandon Gash) who was pitching Jim Lee figures on Instagram. Brandon had also sculpted Nacelle's Moo Mesa. I gather Brandon was laid off by S7 after doing the 2k3 TMNT and Cats Lair 18 months ago, he went around pitching his Jim Lee TMNT, S7 rehired him when they decided to go all-in on 2k3 a few months ago, and he abruptly quit S7 for an exclusive job with Mondo. Mondo has had a much easier time getting approvals on vintage toy updates for their vinyls. Mondo is getting into 6.5" figures with Ghostbusters and MOTU. I expect a TMNT announcement any day and I personally think they'll be doing designs similar to the vinyls. Jagwar definitely had a design or two. It was essentially his magazine appearance with the extra-bushy leaves. I think Dreadmon's was similar to his animation model for the scrapped Mutanimals cartoon? These were just 2D Mirage designs. I think Playmates didn't show interest in the two until around the 2007 movie. Basically, had the CGI movie been a success, the next toyline would be the CGI TMNT teaming with mutants in different countries on a global adventure and Playmates has displayed prototypes of a Dreadmon and Jagwar from that. You'd probably need to mash some things up to combine Playmates' 2000s Varner sculpts with Mirage's 2D sketch pitches. Otherwise it would look 2007ish or just like Mirage or Archie art.
@ dude how are you in the know about all of this? Do you know the people within the company or just watch a lot of interviews. I can’t believe he kept wanting to change Pizza Face because it grossed him out. He may be a nice guy (I don’t know him), but that shows you right there that he doesn’t understand the appeal of 80s/90s tmnt. The gross out stuff in 90/91 was the best stuff in my opinion and I mostly loved everything back then. Those years for me were just the top tier turtle sculpts. I really like what mondo is doing with the real ghostbusters. I’m all on board for that. I may get into turtle figures if they do them, but the price of their stuff kills me. I like those tmnt vinyl designs a lot but I can’t get myself to pay the money. I think those vinyls show they understand the spirit of the series. So you think super7 won’t return to any classic stuff besides GITD figures? Only 2003 waves from now on? I’m surprised they haven’t put a new wave up for preorder yet. It’s been awhile since the last one and there’s only 2 preorders at the moment.
@ It's a mix of watching too many interviews, gossip, talking directly to people. Kyle didn't want to make Pizzaface less gross. He kept setting him aside to work on later because he couldn't handle too much gross at a time. And then he accidentally ended up pushing him back until the Playmates changes hit. After that, Super7 had to keep revising designs to get Nick approvals because Nick wanted more changes or didn't like the changes they made. It became harder work. Kyle is a huge 2k3 fan and is also the one who fought for and got double joints. Basically, it would have been easier to get Pizzaface approved in the first 9 waves, before the Playmates thing. But none of the changes they make are "good enough" for Nick to approve them and they were doing lots of drafts that got rejected. So they're just doing 2003 for now because it's easier to get approvals. A lot of the gross out stuff in early waves was handled more by Four Horsemen and then I want to say Wingnut was guest designed by Armamdo Roque, who is big on gross out and temporarily ran waves 8 and 9 because Kyle was busy elsewhere. (Kyle contributed still and designed Wingnut's alternate head and cape but Armando was fill-in lead.) Armando is now design lead on Nacelle's Moo Mesa. Armando also chose the colors for GITD variants for awhile and I think you can see a change there. Like they were kind of grosser and louder? And then Kyle took that back over and now they're less chaotic looking and more like compatible colors with metallic highlights? That's kind of the difference between Armando and Kyle, IMHO. Armando is very messy, loud, clashing, asymmetrical. Kyle is very sleek, unified, balanced, elegant. I honestly think Kyle is doing great on 2003 and will do even better. Like I say, he really made the double joints happen. He does simple, clean, angular stuff great.

They should put her out for real. From now on they should always release figures in their classic colors instead of the color classics versions.
I got my S7 Triceraton. He's a great toy, but a mediocre action figure at best. The articulation is limited by the sculpt, which is poor engineering. But hey...are you bummed about the Triceraton? Do you know what you need to cheer you up? A nice fully poseable Super 7 Ultimates Foot Soldier!
Sorry I didn’t respond. If I can finally finish a bugman/electrozapper review after starting over a year ago, I’m sure I’ll get the foot soldier one finished too at some point.
I almost ordered this guy, along with Punker Don (who I did order), but now, I'm kind of glad I didn't get him. Aside from all the various articulation and design problems you point out, Triceraton has always felt a little "generic dinosaur monster man" to me, almost a little too obvious of a monster, for TMNT. Muck Man, Mutagen Man, Wingnut, even Bebop and Rocksteady to a degree, just feel more original and creative as monster mutants, more TMNT.
I like the Triceraton design, but I agree with you. His design isn’t as exciting as the other mutants you mentioned. That could be a reason why I didn’t get him as a kid.

They should put her out for real. From now on they should always release figures in their classic colors instead of the color classics versions.
@@razrentals8897they just recently rereleased her in a bundle with the triceraton gladiator
Eyy
Heyyy!
The drop in quality of S7 should be studied.
@razrentals8897 Sure you will, Gary. *Cough* *cough*. Don't mind my sick cough. I'm sure I will get it before I die. *Cough* *cough* 💀💀
44:49 🫶 Raz, seems to me that they just didn’t have enough time with this wave. 😈
Hahaha you made me laugh out loud!
