Excellent video. Yes, I have seen my mom doing it and now as a grown up adult, I do soak, wash and dry clay or mud diyas before using them. This helps to remove the superfluous dust on them and they absorb less oil when they are lit up ( the oil is used up entirely by the wick and does not seep through the mud surface, thus lessening the wastage of oil).
