    You still have to give the bird a varying amount of lead, and how much lead surely depends on the distance to the target? If you gave the same lead, while maintaining the same speed you would miss further and further behind the greater the distance from the target or in front the closer the target or am i missing something here?

    Great video. As a new shooter on clay shooting, I've been struggling with lead amount. Will try the new method this weekend.

    I suppose you could say sustained lead works on the first target in doubles trap -- especially on post 3. The second target still requires a pass-shooting technique though. Just watched Gil's video again. Good stuff!

    Gil, do you use this method of Staying in front of the bird for Trap shooting as well, or the Swing Through?

    Hi Gil, I've heard you say before that pull-away works well for long crossers. Do you recommend pull-away over the OSP method (move mount shoot) or do you recommend OSP for all presentations? Any hope of you getting back up to the Pacific NW again anytime soon to teach?

    OTOH it may work in doubles trap because the two targets are thrown at fixed angles.

      Well, this is a sporting clays tip, so the shooter will always know where the bird (clay) is coming from and can plan accordingly. However a lot of the same principles from sporting clays can be used in the field. If you work on your mount so that it becomes muscle memory, when you flush a bird you lock on it with your eyes and your mount will be second nature. you just need to be quick depending on where the bird flushed relative to your position and which direction you are facing. Practice makes perfect. Now go bust some clays!

    This technique won't work well for trap because the targets are thrown in random directions. For example, if you set up like this to lead a right angle target and you draw a left angle, you'll find yourself chasing the target as it goes the other way. The trap discipline in shotgun sports falls into the pass-shooting category Gil mentioned. However, there are two powerful messages Gil mentioned that do apply to trap; focus on the target and trust your mind to calculate the correct lead.

      Lead is instinctual... keep your eyes on the target; your brain and hands will apply the proper lead without you knowing it...

    What many people don't know, and is the one reason they miss targets, is that *many shotguns shoot high.* Hardly anyone ever mentions this and it causes more misses than not leading a bird or target. Try placing your bead lower than your target until you hit it. Some guns have to be 12-24 inches below a target (depending on distance) in order to be a dead hit.

      Yes, outside of Trap (which is a swing-through disclipline), you should always try and start with the gun pointed in front of the target (whether clay or feathers). Sometimes on the latter you cannot help it (say a flushed upland bird). After a few years of lots of shotgun shooting (started in 2018 myself), I find that its always best to insert the barrel in front of the bird everything (except for Trap shooting)

    Thanks. No help. Allow me to make it clear what people want for tips. DO U USE FUCKING SIGHTS OR JUST AIM HALF ASS DOWN THE BARREL?! can you really shoot without using sights?

    • @xxstarforbrianxx

      The beads are for peripheral reference to see how you're eyes are aligned with the gun. You COULD use the beads as rifle sights but it's not the proper method. You need to set up your gun or find a gun that fits you right. Meaning when you properly mount the gun to your shoulder and place your cheek on the comb of the stock, the gun is aiming where you're looking at that moment. You must keep both eyes and arms moving together as if they're all connected by a pole.

      +Brian Pech ----I'veseen some of the fancy target gun at the range with the fiber optic sights. Are these an advantage for peripheral reference? If so, for a new shooter is it worth having them installed?

    • @xxstarforbrianxx
      @xxstarforbrianxx 8 років тому

      It depends on your eyes and brain. Some people think they're distracting while others like them so you gotta try it yourself. To me either is fine and my Perazzi came from the factory with a red blade sight. Ebay has screw on or magnetic Hiviz brand sights for cheap. Shotgunning is mostly automated so after you fit the gun and get your mount proper just let it happen and you'll be surprised what you're capable of. Perfect your mount and make it consistent and make sure you keep your upper body mostly locked in and dominant eye constantly in the same spot aligned with the barrels so it'll shoot where you're looking. If you find yourself constantly missing after a while then you may need to check gun fit or correct your mount and/or your move to the target i.e. make sure you arent arm swinging causing you to lose alignment between eyes and gun. Sometimes bringing your elbows down can help you stay locked in. I shoot elbows down like many Italians do. keep both eyes open and look through the front sight and focus on the target and your brain will tell you when you're locked on and shoot. Don't try to fight your own brain because your instincts are faster and more precise believe me. We shoot Olympic trap every week twice.

      Thanks for the quick reply. As a newbie, I am trying to avoid purchasing gimmicks or gear above my level. (optics for instance) I believe my gun shoots better than I can, and focus and practice on technique. On the other hand, lol, I can use all the help I can get. Thanks again
