@@BmakinFilm The Jazz scene in Paris is healthy, and the festivals in France and Europe are many and legendary and very well funded by governments and also the European Union. The fan base is predominantly older people. I can't afford the big clubs but there's a long tradition of Parisian night life and Jazz clubs, so I would tend to think that the majority of the fans are local, not tourists. The private music school Atla where I teach Songwriting used to have many Jazz courses for guitar, piano and voice, but they have dried up almost completely. There are less and less Contemporary Music students in general which I think is partially attributable to the Internet and Smart Phone subscription scheme that rips off songwriters and music publishers and the independent labels; there's no more dreams to chase after. You've got to love what you're doing 'cause you ain't gonna pay the bills with music unless you gig a lot! The pay scheme here (if declared) is about €100 net per musician, but the club or promoter pays double that because of taxes etc. There are plenty of bars where musicians play simply for the hat. Please have a look at my Peace Oratorio project when you get a chance: www.peaceoratorio.org. Keep up the great work! JB
@@JBMelmuse Thank you JB - that is insighful. Are Parisians generous with the Hat? Please explain what you mean when you say the promoter pays double because of taxes. "No more dreams to chase after." I hope that is not true ... but I understand. @@BmakinFilm Thanks Ben. Playing for the hat is always a hit or miss situation... sometimes it's great, and other times not so much. The system of official artistic remuneration in France is called "Intermittence du Spectacle". It doubles the cost for the producer of a declared performance because of all the different government funds for retirement, pension, health insurance etc for the performers. It's a great system if you're able to get 50 or so declared gigs a year, but I've always had to teach English and music to make ends meet. For my Peace Oratorio in 2012, my producer had 22 salaried musicians to pay on the night! I am bringing this work back to life, and I will do everything I can to get the show Stateside in time for the centenary of MLK's birth in 2029! I worked in jingles for 5 years in Cleveland, and I left that business for good in 1988 because of the mercantile mindset's effect on my creativity... YES THEY DO. War Jay Rome (RIP), sports commentator Jim Rome’s late father. I don’t hardly disagree with Van Smack on anything much, but when I do, it’s jazz music. (Although like him, not much of a Barry Manilow fan. So there’s THAT.)
Charlie Hunter is right on. The young musicians don’t have the old school cats to preach them how to perfect this art form. It all became a social media popularity contest, which produce new cats with A lot of chops, but no depth AT ALL. Corny quotes, swing-less lines, un listenable-over the top chords, and a terrible habit of trying to get better as quick as possible without getting a proper music education.
Fascinating! Yes, I here much the same - at best is has become a classical music ... but there is little fire, no danger, no surprises .Thanks for your comments. Many of the professors at these jazz conservatories were mentored by the old guard (yelled at, admonished, silent treatment ... I got a lot of that coming up with these guys... occasionally a soft sensitive type like Ellyn Rucker in this film) , yet they use the soft glove with students because the directive is to not hurt anybodies feelings and to have them come back to buy another semester of school! These players lack a compelling story right of school - they have not lived beyond the walls of the ivory towers of academia. Many of the elder greats came up with no safety net - they found that depth quick! They have all the chops as you say but have not been encouraged to find their own voice; and they are still celebrating 70-80 year old songs ... ❤Enjoy my films? your eyes open for We Are Here: Women in Jazz... I am sure you must know of the DIVA Orchestra! I interviewed their leader, drummer Sherrie Maricle... I'm checkin out your stuff on your chan. Cheers to Melbourne - I hope to visit one day
COLORADO MUSIC HALL OF FAME has inducted four of the musicians in JazzTown: DIANNE REEVES, RON MILES, CHARLES BURRELL & ELLYN RUCKER. The CMHOF has also inducted famed nightclub EL CHAPULTEPEC (aka The Pec!). Diane Reeves is also a 5x GRAMMY Winning Jazz Singer.
Wonderful film. Man I think I need to transcribe those Mitch phrases in F.
Harry - Mitch is the Man! Please look him up (Mitch Chmara) on FB: he offers tons of free patterns, lines, concepts on his page where he performs them as if you are getting a private lesson. Yes! Those lines in F are outrageous! Thanks for watching and for your comment. Mitch is actually featured both playing and speaking more in my short film Who Killed Jazz which is also now free on my chan! Mitch teaches in Denver if you ever go through Colorado should look him up: He and I did a very exciting cd together called Area 15 Live (can find on Apple/iTunes)... here it is: music.apple.com/us/album/live/65453875 I'm on drums with Eric Thorin on bass - Mitch is smokin!

Well Ben, such a good work on Jazz in America nowadays! We can see that all these gifted musicians can ALSO speak brilliantly on their art, and on their lives! That is specially interesting for a french jazzman like me, who has always be conscious to lack all the social background of this music...
although I could hear and meet many U.S. jazzmen here in Paris...Congratulations for your movie maker talent too, appreciated the rhythm of your movie, and the pleasant disconnection of the image
with the music...So please keep on making movies, and sharing them with us!
😃😃😃👍🙏
Merci! Thank you Denis - I see you have watched both of my current films. I have more in the works (if you have not already seen the links to official trailers for Echoes of Tradition and We Are Here: Women In Jazz I will post them here. Great work, Ben! I spent my formative years in Chicago, and the performers you interview here remind me of my mentors on the scene. Big Preesh, as my 18 year old multi-instrumentalist son would say.
Epic Preesh back at ya Cameron! Billy Wallace (pianist playing Summertime here) was from Chicago and played w Von Freeman before joining Max Roach and Sonny Rollins (recording with them on Jazz in 3/4 Time). Drummer Gene Bass in this film also from Chicago (went to basic w David Amram: short story here: ua-cam.com/video/g7OiV_daXgM/v-deo.htmlsi=acvf_fb9vlncwgQX

Miley Cyrus back up singer AYO AWOSIKA appears in JazzTown (and in the short Who Killed Jazz). I first met Ayo in early 2000s when she was working as a hostess in the original location of Dazzle on 9th Street ... I caught up w her here in JazzTown while she was on break from a Cyrus tour and back in Denver for a gig with her hometown boys! She now sings on many Disney movie soundtracks: Wakanda Forever w Rihanna "Lift Me Up") and has an amazing career!
